There is an unholy mess in the Maryland article regarding a section entitled "cultural identity." Most of the editors agree that the state is a Northern one, and many facts have been posted and adequately cited to prove that fact. A Confederate sympathizer, however, is constantly going onto the article, removing cited information, and replacing it with unsourced "statistics" that steer Maryland into the Southern category. Please read the whole debate, weigh in, and please, PLEASE, help.

Anaheim Hills Addition[edit]

The long feud is over, and it seems like the page has finally come to terms with all editors involved! Since it is such a stellar page in its current condition, and looks better than most of the Orange County city pages, could you add it somehow to the Orange County Template (located at bottom of the Anaheim Hills, California page if you dont know what I am referring to) to bring more people to the page, so it seems like this huge debate and edit war had a significant point (since we did spend alot of time editing it) --Ericsaindon2 06:00, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I think Will Beback finally is understanding what I have been telling him regarding Anaheim Hills. It does not fit really any category. It is not a census designated place, neighborhood, not yet a city, not a community, not an unincorporated island, so its identity is nameless, although its intentions are understood by Will Beback, myself, and city officials. It is more recognized as an individual "city" than a community and an unincorporated island, but has less status in the government than a city. I think this issue has historically puzzled the Census Bureau about what to call Anaheim Hills (becuase it has been discussed that it will gain cityship soon). So now that its nameless identity that has feuled this debate for so long has been agreed upon, would it now be possible to add it to the Orange County, California city template (example located on Anaheim Hills page)? --Ericsaindon2 05:33, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Re: max speed on BART[edit]

I highly doubt any third-party sources that could be considered reliable would care about this information or publish it. How else could I go about "proving" what I saw? I simply sat in the front car of the train and observed through the cab door window the max speed attained by the train as shown on the speedometer. Another problem is that you only observed that speed for that particular day, time, type of train cars, number of cars, the amount of passengers, etc. How do you know that is THE standard operating speed for that particular segment on that route? Can you guarantee that each and every train that travels on that route reaches that speed? What if a train traveling at 9-10 p.m. on that same route can go higher? How can you verify that it was not an error in the computer-controlled system used in BART's Operations Control Center? Those are some of the questions that pop into my head. Question for you...[edit]

First off, I just wanted to says thanks for apologizing for deleting my Awards and Tropies section for the Pittsburgh Penguins. I was able to rebuild the section with minimal work.

Second, since you know more about this forum than I do, I have a question for you. What do you do when someone reverts all the facts you've changed to the previous ones? As an example, I just went through all the NHL team pages to change the players' birthplaces like U.S.S.R., Czechoslovakia, etc. to Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Czech Republic, etc. I work in TV sports and I know that the players are the first ones to say they were born in Russia instead of the U.S.S.R. Granted, some of these were already done and I didn't have to change anything, but there's some guy named Rasputin who is changing them all back. He said "we" use the country that existed at the time of the player's birth. Who is this "we" and why can he do this? He said that's the way it is in the NHL media guide (which I know for a fact that no one has bothered to make those changes over the years).

Since I left you that last message, I double-checked my references...whereas the NHL media guide lists someone as USSR or Czechoslovakia, the individual team media guides list them as Russia or Czech Republic, etc. I can forward those listings to you if you like.

I only deleted the ones I saw that were tagged and said they were redundant. I have not deleted anything else. Of course, if the issue with wowturkey.com is settled and they agree to release them under a different license, you can always upload them again. The key is that they cannot be "non commerical" because the intent of Jimbo Wales and the Wikimedia Foundation is to enable Wikipedia to be also used for commerical use. Image:Undergroud_stationofBURSA.jpg was not tagged as redundant. It was only tagged as coming from wowturkey.com. I agree non-commercial images should be deleted, but IMHO in this case there is some rationale at least to consider deleting wowturkey.com images later than the thousands of other non-commercial images lying about here.

It is just that we could avoid the hassles of keeping track of what got deleted and reuploading if we could wait for a few more days until wowturkey.com gives a positive response one way or the other. Right now they appear to be confused about our requirements. No harm done by deleting just this one image (& its 2 duplicates) though!

Also, from the speed at which it got deleted, I'm afraid I'm not sure you did verify that the image is truly noncommercial. I hope images tagged by a vandal as noncommercial don't get deleted immediately without verification.

The photo was actually from http://www.wowturkey.com/ (at least claimed to be so) which says something less strict about commercial usage (so I think it might be possible to get freely licenced images from them). Contra Costa County, California[edit]

RE: "rv: This is the English encyclopedia, it doesn't need a Spanish name" actually it does need the Spanish name, since both English and Spanish are official languges of the County, all materials and signage from the government offices are available in spanish and it is officially a, "Bilingual County" the voter guide comes in english and spanish, same size same lettering all polling sites have bilingual singage in every corner of the county even where there arnt many spanish speakers. Arizona is officially bilingual, and on the article it states "STATE OF ARIZONE/ESTADO DE ARIZONA" the Bolivia article says REPÚBLICA DE BOLIVA/WULIVIA/ULUVIA a showing the trilingual local names (Spanish Quechua Ayamara) of that country, the canada article says it in english and french and so on the Spain article says Spain (España) the local language names are always included on the side bars. NHL Templates[edit]

Hey Zzyzx11, I noticed you merged the Oilers template and the NHL template. That's fine with me. You seem to have good knowledge of template syntax, and I wanted to ask you a question. Ducks name[edit]

Hi, i think historical references to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim should stay. Any mention of the team in the present tense should be Anaheim Ducks but I think it would be correct to say for example:

1)The New Jersey Devils defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the Stanley Cup Final.

2)Paul Kariya began his NHL career with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Semi-protection[edit]

There was already a discussion about semi-protection of 2006 FIFA World Cup on the talk page. Most of the opinion seemed to be leaning towards it not being necessary. Yes, there is vandalism of the article, but there are a lot of good changes from anonymous editors too. All in all, I thought the people working on the article were doing a great job of keeping it in good shape. Can you try and keep it protected for the shortest time possible? I went back through the list of IPs involved in the Turkey vandalism. At least 5 of them were open proxies, which I've blocked indefinitely. Depending on how determined our vandal is, short term protection might not be enough.
