Background and composition[edit]

Jussifer produced "I'm a Mess" and wrote the song along with Rexha, Meredith Brooks, Shelly Peiken and Justin Tranter.[1] Warner released it for digital download and streaming on June 15, 2018 as the lead single of Rexha's second studio album Expectations (2018).[2] Her vocal delivery spans from the low note of A3 to the high note of C#5.[3] The song is set in the key of B minor with a moderately fast tempo of 97 beats per minute.[3]
