Cmdr0bot edit to Peterborough East Railway Station

Cmdr0bot replaced "a LNWR" with "an LNWR" in this article. Now, I'm not saying it was wrong, but it doesn't seem right either. We wouldn't say "an lemon" for example, would we? What do you think? Mjroots (talk) 08:46, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Role of the bots

Thanks for the reply on the Cmdr0bot page:

I'm new to this, and have little clue about how the bots work. They seem to do useful work that would be hard for humans to keep up with, like repairing electronic vandalism and cleaning graffiti. At the same time, it must be hard to design them not to run a little wild sometimes.

(Have you ever looked at a serious recent book of reference and suddenly realized that something is wrong, and that a word processor macro, or something like that, has swept the text, and picked up and changed instances both right and wrong? Word processor macros must be somewhere in the ancestral lineage of the bots, I expect.)

There is surely an emblem or motto for these things to be found somewhere in Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice", especially in Disney's visualization of it in "Fantasia" :)

Does your bot work for fixing spelling errors?

I was wondering about using a bot for this, which I have never tried before. Let me know if it is a possibility, otherwise sorry to have bothered you. Itsmejudith (talk) 14:50, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Judith, sorry for the delay in responding. Real Life got in the way of my wikipedia activities for a while. My bot doesn't do spell checking in the normal sense of the term, since it's too dangerous/ambiguous an activity to do in an automated fashion. For example, you have to deal with words that are English misspellings, but valid words/names in other languages ("Teh" being one example); also you have to recognise cases where misspellings are deliberate, or have a functional purpose (eg linking to an image with a misspelling in the filename). For these kinds of reasons, the bot guidelines strictly forbid an automated spellchecking bot.
My bot has a few strategies to deal with this. One is to do a simple search and replace for a large number of common words that are highly likely to be misspelt. I've built up this list over a couple of years by looking at real articles and doing manual spellchecks on them, and continue to amend it as time goes on. The list I use can be seen here. Another is to use a list of regular expressions to handle more complex cases (eg 'mesures' is usually wrong, unless it's part of the phrase 'poids et mesures'). A third is to use a set of ad hoc pieces of code to handle various fixup tasks, such as stripping some of the junk out of Amazon URLs, fixing common mistakes in external URLs (eg starting with 'http:///' rather than 'http://'). Of course, none of these changes are guaranteed to be 100% correct in all cases, so I have to supervise the bot and manually confirm the changes if they're correct, and add them to a list of articles with exceptions if they're not.
I hope this answers your question. Cheers, Cmdrjameson (talk) 14:01, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks very much for taking the time to explain it to me. I noticed a number of consession and concensus. Both of these are in your exhaustive list of errors. I understand why you need to run the bot manually. If I see new kinds of error or an accumulation of a particular kind of error I'll drop you a message. Your work on this is much appreciated. Spelling error for your bot

"Companian" for "companion". I changed a few. Hope it is OK to notify you of these. I'm somewhat in awe of those who can create a bot, Commander, Sir! Itsmejudith (talk) 16:09, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Judith. Thanks for the suggestion, I went through enwiki and found 13 articles with Companian/Companians. It's not a problem at all for you to make suggestions like this, in fact I welcome them; keep 'em coming! You'll get a quicker response from me if you make them on my CmdrObot talk page though, as I'm logged in more often as a bot than as a regular user. Cheers, CmdrObot (talk) 18:21, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Bot exclusion

Just trying to tidy these up . Your bot is excluded from Harry McNish/. If you can confirm it is wise to blockquote as on that page you could remove the bots template. Rich Farmbrough, 19:47 7 September 2008 (GMT).

Hi Rich.
Good idea. My bot no longer makes any changes to that page, so I've removed the bot exclusion template. I'll have a trawl for any others the next time I download a database dump too.

Fladbury

Hi Cmdrjameson/archive5! An article you have been involved with has been tagged by its parent project as being in need of a little attention or further development. If you can help with these minor issues please see talk:Fladbury

NowCommons: File:El nino north american weather.png

File:El nino north american weather.png is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:El nino north american weather.png. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:El nino north american weather.png]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:57, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks.

I see you cleaned up a few tiny spelling problems in one of my articles (Olympic-Wallowa Lineament) — thanks! Those can be so hard to ferret out (I've tried!), and yet so obnoxious, so I am pleased that you have taken the time. - J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 20:48, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Your bot fixing Amazon links

When (if ever) was your bot approved to make edits like this?--Rockfang (talk) 23:37, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi Rock. My bot was approved back in March 2006, and at that point it was already compacting Amazon URLs as discussed here. The approval can be found here. Cheers, CmdrObot (talk) 13:46, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for the info. In the future, replying on my bot's page probably isn't the best idea. Either your's (like you did), your bot's, or my talk page may have been better. Also, you may want to consider replying with your main account and not your bot account.--Rockfang (talk) 01:30, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Revision to Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri articles

I noticed that you have revised either Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri or Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire.

I intend to revise those articles following the Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines. There are more details on the discussion pages of those articles. I'd be interested in any comments you have. It would be best if your comments were on the discussion pages of the two articles.

Thank you.

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:18, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 14

Hi. When you recently edited Grundy NewBrain, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page TPA (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 10:32, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

K1839 moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, K1839, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. —AE (talkcontributions) 06:12, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
