Article expanded - still needs map, pics[edit]

I was surprised to find this article was little more than a stub (unmarked), with more info about the expedition on other pages such as "Council Bluffs, Iowa" than on this page itself. So I reviewed, and then gave the article a better narrative (added Long's inclusion in expedition, expanded other info, rejigged "Costs/Failure" sections, created "Steamboat / Departure / Autumn / Winter" sections and infilled by paraphrasing details from a combination of sources. The whole is now a more sensible read. I'm surprised it wasn't marked long ago as an important event or topic needing attention. I learned a lot about the period in just a few hours while expanding it, and it seems to me that it was a major (albeit financially disastrous) venture, historically. The article still needs a map and some images to round it off. I can't guarantee having further time to add that, though... Pete Hobbs (talk) 16:47, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Goal of the expedition[edit]

The article's introduction states that the expedition's goal was "to establish a military fort or outpost near present-day Bismarck, North Dakota at the mouth of the Yellowstone River." Bismarck, however, is over one hundred miles southeast of the mouth of the Yellowstone. If a closer modern-day town would do, Williston seems a better choice. But I don't know the history. Perhaps the goal of the expedition wasn't to go all the way to the mouth of the Yellowstone, but only as far as Bismarck. Nevertheless, in either case, the wording (here and on related pages like Richard Mentor Johnson) should probably be revised. VashiDonsk(T) 18:26, 21 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yellowstone and Long expeditions[edit]

Since it does not appear that the Yellowstone expedition talk page is watched much, I posted a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States History#Stephen H. Long's Expedition of 1820 about differentiating the Yellowstone expedition from Long's expedition (i.e., removing Long's expedition content from that article).–CaroleHenson (talk) 17:53, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
