Assessment[edit]

Sorry about the italics: they appeared and I couldn't get rid of them. The info I have put in is directly from the Tout papers, which I have been looking at recently. Their content is NOT primarily about Manchester University, as had been supposed by the writer of this entry. Presumably Tout did much of his work person-to-person in that regard. Although there are about 6000 items, nearly all incoming letters, it would be an exaggeration to say they are a truly major source of information on the U.K.'s intellectual and academic establishment of the day or on wider public affairs. C.H. Firth provides some interesting insight into the Oxford History School and its politics and promotions. The letters from former pupils, especially in wartime, are obviously of value. Mrs Tout's own in-tray is included in the collection and might even prove of more general or biographical interest. 12.02.09 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Medievalduck (talkcontribs) 20:11, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
