Nyarlathotep Original Research[edit]

I edited out some references which concluded that the "whisperer" is Nyarlathotep. This is neither obvious nor universally agreed upon. Indeed, it is heavily inferred that the whispering is produced by the soft, buzzing pseudo-voice of a Mi-Go. Moreover, given that Nyarlathotep's most distinctive characteristic is its ability to assume a multitude of form, including those of human form, it makes little sense that it would need such a clumsy disguise. Even assuming Nyarlathotep cannot assume a specific visage, it certainly does not require false hands and legs. True, there's a reference to Nyarlathotep earlier in the story that speaks of it assuming disguises, but it may simply be alluding to the Mi-Go emulating its techniques of disguise (rather crudely, at that). It's impossible to divine anything conclusive given the story's intentional ambiguity. I did not delete the reference to Robert Price's alleged supposition, but it does require citation. Movie[edit]

It is stated on this article that a movie is being made; is there a link that confirms this?

The concept behind the whisperer in the darkness is very similar to the Little Red Riding Hood children's story: Lovecraft uses an alien impostor (instead of the wolf in little red riding hood) Demonmancubus 18:28, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's a pretty big stretch. --68.5.238.47 (talk) 06:13, 7 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Supernatural?[edit]

The article mentions supernatural elements "such as its claim that the alien fungi, although visible to the naked eye and physically tangible, do not register on photographic plates and instead produce an image of the background absent the creature (an impossibility by any known laws of optics, though a trait commonly attributed to vampires)." While Lovecraft may well have gotten the idea from those legends (though I doubt it - it seems more a plot convenience than anything else) it's explained in at least a pseudo-scientific manner, and isn't assumed to be supernatural within the story.Vultur (talk) 12:50, 9 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
