Moving to Wiktionary?[edit]

User:Mzajac marked this article as a candidate for moving to Wiktionary. Why? The article discusses the history of ranged weapons and thus goes beyond the scope of Wiktionary, which is just to give a definition. --ZeroOne 11:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move to Missile weapon[edit]

What's the preferred name for that term, "Ranged weapon" or "Missile weapon"? Should we move this article to missile weapon? Nik SageTalk 17:55, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Real term?[edit]

I can't help but feel like this is yet another dismal attempt to turn a video-game term into a wikipedia article. I would like to see some sourcing in the first paragraph, where the assertions are made about the terms "ranged weapon" and "melee weapon." Otherwise I would recomend that this article be deleted. Also, cruise missiles are not an individual weapon at all; they are ORDINANCE, which means they fall into the same category as artillery. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.177.14.225 (talk) 14:50, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The video-game world got the term somewhere, right? I think it's a legitimate article, since these are weapons with range. However, I agree that there needs to be more sourcing. Unfortunately, due to the widespread use of this term in video games, it's really difficult to find appropriate articles online. —Lithium (talk) 11:13, 22 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To state 'It is sometimes also called projectile weapon or missile weapon' is fallacious and misleading. Clearly 'projectile weapon' or 'missile weapon' are the more established terms, while 'range weapon' and indeed 'melee weapon' are comparatively new coinings that should be set in their context. If the source is video gaming as stated above, this limited perspective should be explained.JF42 (talk) 07:00, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have checked several dictionaries and found the term "Ranged weapon" only in Wiktionary, which is not authoritative. The term does not match the definition. "Range weapon" might match it. A "ranged weapon" would be a weapon that is ranged, but that's not the definition given. "Projectile weapon" sounds like a better term for what the article is about. "Projectile weapon" looks to be more of a correct term - as @JF42 highlighted "ranged weapon" seems to be a somewhat recent coining. See 1. How do people feel about moving the page to Projectile weapon and updating the article accordingly? @Nurg @PhoenixBlitzkrieg Golem08 (talk) 20:14, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Personal weapons, Category:Throwing spears and Category:Ancient artillery are categories within Category:Weapons, Category:Spears and Category:Artillery respectively. — Robert Greer (talk) 17:24, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
