Finding original creator[edit]

Besides the shortsighted views of most Wiki editors, it's known that this 1. Originated on 4chan 2. Is a parody of Meatspin (see number 1). How can we go about finding the original author? I heard it proposed that the original artist would have the development files, perhaps that could be a way of proof? Moved from Article[edit]

"The 'Loituma Girl' is a small .swf file that consists of a looping animation of BLEACH character Orihime Inoue, coupled with the middle-eight portion of Ievan Polkka, a Finnish folk song. First appearing on the Internet in late April of 2006, the .swf animation quickly made the rounds of various message forums and became known as the 'Loituma Girl' when it was apparent that there was no proper name for the .swf file.

The folk song in the animation is played and sung by a Finnish quartet called Loituma, initally formed in 1987, from which the file gets its name."

Reason for move[edit]

Move Back[edit]

This doesn't deserve it's own article, similiarly if say a song was featured in a different media (for example; a soundtrack to a film or motif in a game), there wouldn't be a seperate article, usual practice would be list under usage of song in media. Origin[edit]

Well, the answer is plain as day then. I've also read that this flash video originated after the appearance of meatspin.com. PLEASE DON'T visit that site -- it's a gay porno that features a, err, certain bodypart being repeated spun (a la Loituma Girl) to the song "You Spin Me Round." I can't verify the info, as I don't remember where I read it and I don't know if we can ever tell which website -- meatspin or leekspin -- came first. Negi, not leek[edit]

Spoof[edit]

I read on this article (a while back, now the revision is lost) that it was a parody of meatspin.com, which seems logical, as what the article said about Meatspin was closely resemblant to this (the timer, the spinning, the loop, etc.) Meatspin is down, but still...mayhaps Meatspin was a spoof of Leekspin? ~ Flameviper 16:49, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. Loituma became popular around april or may 2006. To my knowledge meatspin is older than that so it can't be a spoof of Loituma Girl. Also, I don't think leekspin.com is a parody/spoof/fake shock site of meatspin, I think it's only a coincidence (anyway, its owner is always spamming its stupid link on virtually all language editions of wikipedia) Frigo 17:11, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another ringtone ripoff[edit]

There are currently ringtone ads in Belgium (and maybe other Benelux countries) featuring a rather poorly drawn imitation of the original Loituma Girl animation, but with the usual audio.--Caustic Armadillo 16:54, 19 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added a references to the video of the one being played in The Netherlands, which I suspect is the same. I could not find the content on either the Jamba or Ringtoneking ('competing' companies but in reality both owned by the same parent company) websites - so the video is one that has been captured and placed on YouTube. I suspect that content will disappear easily with time. I'm not sure about the copyright limitations in this case, but if an image for illustrative/comparison purposes to the original is 'fair use', somebody feel free to take a still of the capture and add it to the article. 83.84.36.96 14:00, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, an editor removed the reference citing copyright violations - I agree that the very article discusses something that -is- a clear copyright violation of both a piece of animation from an Anime, and from a song. Whatever. I've now added a reference to an ad that uses the same western image (sorry, not animated) from the provider itself - so it's clearly fair to link to it as the only copyright they would violate would be their own.   • The original cartoon meme isn't a copyright violation; both the song and the 4 frames of animation are clear fair use, even ignoring parody law. Good Article nomination[edit]

I put the Good Article nomination for this Loituma Girl on hold until a couple things are cleared up.

  • There are a few minor MOS-related issues, with things such as periods in captions that aren't complete sentences, lack of proper capitalization in a few places (such as with flash animation instead of Flash animation), etc.
  • Although this isn't a Good Article requirement, I feel like there is quite a bit of superfluous information. For example, it is unnecessary to tell readers what a leek is, when the animation of the girl twirling a leek is in the article and when a Wikilink is provided, much less do they need to know how to say "leek" in Japanese.
  • I'm not sure about the image license on the animated gif. It claims to be a screenshot of an anime, but I don't think animations count as screenshots. Also, the image caption is not very good.

I believe I've done the cleanup bits you suggested. The negi is technically a separate species from the leek, though the difference is pretty minor, so a more accurate sentence might be that she is twirling a "negi, a Japanese vegetable closely related to the leek". I can't find any guideline regarding animated gifs, but I believe it qualifies as a tv screenshot since it is a sequence of 4 tv screenshots being cycled and the only other way to show the information would be to take all 4 screenshots and lay them out separately. --tjstrf talk 16:46, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA hold[edit]

I have reviewed the article and have looked at previous comments and feel that past conditions have been met/answered. I think it meets all but one of the criteria at WP:WIAGA. I have placed the article on hold, but this is only for one thing and can easily be fixed. If so could you please provide a reference to one or more of these examples in the following statement:

As of mid-2006, there are multiple videos and remixes of the song that were inspired by the Flash cartoon.

I think what might also be good here is to briefly cover one of these multiple videos/remixes and state how it was inspired by the cartoon e.g. similar animation or lyrics (if you can call them that!) etc. Otherwise the rest of the article is fine. LordHarris 04:04, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've expanded the sentence to be more descriptive, but this is a bit of a paradox as far as referencing goes. See, none of the individual remixes (unless you count the commercial ones as "remixes") are noteworthy, only the whole mass of them existing. So linking to a single non-notable one just for the sake of having an example would be rather spammish.

Video Game[edit]

There is a Loituma Girl video game for Nintendo DS. It has more anime characters other then just Orihime Inoue. It's kind of simple though. All you do is press on the diffrent characters and you see them spinning a negi. So I don't care that much about meatspin not having its own article, but this one should at least mention that for many people leekspin was seen as a less-disgusting version of the same concept. While there is no evidence that leekspin is directly based on meatspin (even though it seems pretty obvious to me) there at least has to be evidence of people connecting the two.
