I made a section "Style of play" and help me expand it - Taro-Gabunia (talk) 18:11, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Everything in the section needs to be cited (to stop it being original research) - the cites will probably be to newspaper articles about him, and quotations from notable footballers or managers. [1] is a starting point, for instance. Trebor (talk) 21:28, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Style of play

The article is very good and complete, though it's missing an style of play section. Perhaps people could speak about how he started as a right winger, but afterwards started playing as an Advanced midfielder and as a striker and how his favourite move is to dribble from the right to the centre and shoot. Or that his main strenght is dribbling, but he is also a good long shooter, finishter, passer.. etc —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.255.46.197 (talk) 01:32, 10 September 2010 (Ǎ) yeah he's usually deployed as a striker but falls back to the midfield to get the ball en dribble forward —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.163.68.224 (talk) 13:33, 27 February 2011 (UTC) hes a fucking idiot

It should be added that: On April 12th 2011, Lionel Messi set a new record for most goals scored in a season by a Barcelona player. Thus, surpassing the previews record of 47 goals in a season, held by Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima and Messi himself. Messi managed to scored the record-breaking 48 goals in just 46 games played. On 26 April Messi scored both goals in a 0-2 win over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg. The second goal was a brilliant solo weaving in and out of the Madrid defenders and finishing in the 87th minute.

Mistakes in Messi's international statistics

Messi should have 16apps and 11gls for Argentina U20 instead of 7apps and 6gls. 2005 South American Youth Championship statistics have not been added to his Argentina U20 tally.

Also, his statistics playing in the 2008 Summer Olympics should not be included in its own group (Argentina U23 in this case). Olympics football is played under a U23 format but that does not mean that the U23 teams really exist by themselves. Those teams are just the senior ones but only players under 24 years of age (except three of them that can be older) are allowed to participate. Messi's apps, gls and assists during the 2008 Summer Olympics should be added to his Argentina senior team tally. During 2008 Summer Olympics, Messi appeared in 5 matches, scored 2 goals and gave 3 assists (to Acosta against Cote d'Ivoire and to Di Maria against Netherlands and Nigeria). Messi statistics for Argentina senior team for 2008 should be 13apps, 4gls and 4 assists making a total of 60apps, 18gls and 14 assists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.147.133.202 (talk) 19:49, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Just so you know, Messi assisted the only goal (scored by Otamendi) in Argentina's friendly match against Venezuela on the 2nd of September. His total assist tally for Argentina should now be updated to 18, not 17. This was also his 61st cap, so his caps should be changed from 60 to 61. Thanks.

This is the source that states that he assisted the goal from a corner kick.

Barcelona B statistics

Puyol, Xavi and Bojan have Barcelona B matches in statistics table. Is this common practise and why not add these stats to this article too? Kahkonen (talk) 18:39, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Position

Messi has been tagged as a Striker, when his versatility, speed, movement and even his playstyle comparisson to Maradona dictates that he is not a "number 9" Striker like Didier Drogba, for example. Besides scoring a lot of goals, he is also one of Barcelona's top assist makers.

He's not a 100% Winger like Arjen Robben, but neither is a 100% Second Striker like Alessandro Del Piero. So to make more sense and have more balance,"Forward/Winger" is a better assessment of what he plays in real life.

What about "False 9"? [2][3][4] Kahkonen (talk) 15:09, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

I think the description of "false 9" is accurate, but in Modern day Football is too colloquial, Robin van Persie could easily fit into that position, but nobody calls him a "False 9". I suggested Forward since it's what Wayne Rooney is positioned at in Wikipedia. Aloncho11 (talk) 21:24, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Club carrer statistics

You could include the 2003-2004 season to, he played 8 matches for Barcelona C in Tercera División scoring 5 goals and he also played 5 matches without scoring any goals for Barcelona B in Segunda División B. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.60.10.59 (talk) 13:26, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Is there sources for these stats? "He scored 35 goals in 30 on their junior squad last year," says someone here, 10/19/2004. Kahkonen (talk) 21:41, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
The 35 goals in 30 matches is probably refering to his cadete A (schoolboys level 14-15 years old) season 2002-2003 where he played 30 matches scoring 37 goals, in this team was also present Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Piqué. The 2003-2004 season he started in junior B squad scoring 1 goal, then he was promoted to the junior A squad where he spent most of the season scoring 21 goals, during the winter/spring he was promoted to Barcelona C playing 8 matches scoring 5 goals and at the end of the season he was again promoted to Barcelona B playing 5 matches. For most of this season he was actually training with the A squad but was not considerer physically strong enough to debute in any competitive match with the A squad.
Including the friendly he played for the A squad against FC Porto he is the only player in the history of FC Barcelona to play for 5 different teams in a single season. I'll see if I can dig up a source. In the meanwhile a short historic recap of his first years in the club aired on the clubs own TV channel (Barcelona TV) tell the story of his ascend through the ranks during this season, unfortunately it is only available in catalan. It can be found on youtube, the actual mini documentary is called Messi ADN blaugrana and was aired on Barcelona TV 13/12/2009. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.60.11.55 (talk) 22:59, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

As he played 9 times and was on bench 13 times (and how many more in Copa?) [5], I think you are right. However, he did play some matches in B team ([6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12]). Maybe 9? (= 22 - 8 - 5) Kahkonen (talk) 23:07, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Well it would be easy to do with original research, just count the number of times his name appear in the matchreport. All you need is the dates for the matchdays for the B-squad and then you can find the matchreport in Mundo Deportivo the following day. I have yet to see anyone publish Messis complete B-squad stats so good luck on finding that.
