Messi is of Italian descent

many people are interested in the fact that he is of Italian descent. the fact that you removed this shows an obvious bias, and is extemely rude regarding the fact that this has come up several times and so is of interest to many users. you may not think it's important that jfk is of irish descent, but every decent biography of him relates this.

your obvious bias is a shame. there should be no space given to prejudice here. this is a forum for users.

we are not relating information about him to cover your prejudice. we are trying to give a true reflection of who he is and where he came from. if newspapers in spain think this was noteworthy, then why shouldn't it be printed here.

my interest in pages written and edited by people like you with obvious prejudices wanes. there is a huge correlation between many argentinian footballers and italy. if that's not of interest to you, tough. it may be of interest to others.

shame on you, and your prejudice. this colours whether i will use wikipedia. your bias is deplorable.

New award

Messi has won a new award http://goal.com/en-us/news/88/spain/2009/11/11/1619265/barcelona-star-lionel-messi-wins-trofeo-alfredo-di-stefano

Feel free to add it to the article along with the reference if you think it is worthwhile. One of the main principles on this project is to be bold. If you make a change and someone disagrees or it breaks something they will revert and discussion can take place. This is all described in the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle. Don't you see that this award is already included in his page? He won this award a few months ago and yesterday was only a ceremony on which he could finally lift this trophy:)
Next time maybe you should check Messi's page first in order not to start unnecessary discussion like this.
PS However, both recent LFP Awards (Best Player and Best Striker), and maybe FIFA Team of The Year 2008 must be added to Messi's page.

Winger vs. striker? No, winger AND striker!

Why can't we say he plays in two positions?!? Some sources say he is a winger (such as Football-Lineups.com and ESPNsoccernet), while others say he is a striker (such as UEFA, FC Barcelona and Goal.com). There are very few players (goalkeepers the exception!) who only play in one position - what is wrong with saying he plays in both positions?!? Please stop this petty edit warring or I'll have to report all involved parties. GiantSnowman 23:58, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou, I added striker because the official Barca website states he is a winger and a striker, then that other person couldn't accept it! almost every player (apart from goalies) has played more than one position! Simba1409 (talk) 00:04, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

The article states that Messi won the Champions League in the 2005-2006 season. He was injured and missed the end of this season and was not part of the squad for the final, which would be required in order to receive a winners medal. 92.236.253.158 (talk) 23:46, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

He was part of the Barca's champions league squad of the season, and paid contribution. The fact that he was injured during the final game DOES NOT mean that he hasn't won champions league. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.20.238.252 (talk) 17:54, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
That is a lie. Messi WAS part of the CL final squad that year. He did not play any second, nevertheless he was included into the final's squad, which proves that he did receive both - the honour and medal for the tournament.

New Position

If anyone hasn't noticed Messi has been playing more centre recently behind the striker rather than floating on the wing area and before proposing a new change I looked for evidince and found it today!

[2]

Anyway we need to add to the list, we now he plays Striker every now and then and usualy on the wing but this new position is behind the striker so I suggest we had second striker?

Also should we mention something about him being in papers acrross europe which is also in that page I listed! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Simba1409 (talkcontribs) 21:54, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Declarations about Messi becoming the best player in soccer history

It's necessary to add the declarations of several great soccer players and legends such as Diego Maradona saying Messi is in the way to become the best player in the whole soccer history

http://www.marca.com/2010/04/07/futbol/equipos/barcelona/1270661474.html

No it isn't. That's POV. When most reputable media says so, after he has had a long career, (like Pelé, Maradona or Cruyff). Just now what Maradona says he will become, does not qualify. -- Alexf(talk) 20:02, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Who defines "most reputable media". That's personal point of view. A lot of media is saying so already. And Maradona's opinion isnt another opinion, he's one of the 2 best soccer players of history according to FIFA, most qualified person to talk about it ever —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.138.177.132 (talk) 22:09, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Established sports media. Maradona is one person and it's his opinion. I personally might agree but these are WP's rules. Please read the definition on POV.

Many established sports media -- not just Maradona -- are already saying Messi might be the greatest footballer of all time. Of course, there will never be an unanimous view. But the fact that some people are suggesting this should be mentioned in the article. 123.49.44.160 (talk) 15:26, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Assists - It's 11 NOT 10.

Someone added an eleventh assist after the Zaragoza match but someone else took it down and it has since not been edited properly.

Lionel Messi won the penalty for Zlatan Ibrahimovic - According to assist rules, Messi should have had an assist for it. Proof:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assist_(football)

"Where goals resulting from penalties are concerned, the player who is fouled in the area receives an assist point (unless, that is, the player who is fouled subsequently executes the penalty himself .)"

This season he has 39 goals and 11 assists, not 10, please change it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BFUK (talkcontribs) 16:56, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

You need a source saying he has 11. Wikipedia is not considered a source of information regarding anything except Wikipedia itself. Sandman888 (talk) 16:59, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Messi's position should be changed to "Second striker / Deep lying forward"

I have to insist that Messi is neither a striker (like Zlatan or Eto'o are) nor a winger (like Pedro or C. Ronaldo are). It is compelling to call him a striker because he plays recently in center forward and there is no other forwards in front of him, but he is and has always been a second striker or a deep lying forward. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nisimlevi (talkcontribs) 18:47, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

I can't understand why this would be relevant, she most probably is descended from an Italian family as her surname suggests but most Argentinians are descended from Italians.190.16.186.12 (talk) 23:16, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Messi's position

where it lists that messi's positions (striker and winger) they should add attacking midfielder because messi played this positon for his last 15 games of the 07-08 season with barcelona and in the 2010 world cup, which is a significant amount of times playing attacking midfielder, therefore it should be worth mentioning. Position

Is Messi a Winger or a Second Striker (SS)? I think he's more of a second striker since he sometimes plays as an attacking midfielder. I was about to change it but thought it has to be given a little bit of a discussion. Attractionist (talk) 20:50, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

He plays in both positions. When he was promoted, from Barça B, he used to play as a Winger, but this last year, 2009-10, Guardiola started to put him as a SS, where he has proven to be very effective (he won the last golden boot award). So I wouldn't change it. He is a Winger AND a Second Striker. --88.19.239.97 (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

I think this season should be included in the infobox as he debuted this year in the B team.
