Untitled[edit]

Most modern books, articles and scientific papers refer to the species as "Iberian lynx".

I've updated this page, reducing the numbers of lynx left in the wild and adding three external links monitoring the situation, as well as a Spanish news report about the birth of cubs in captivity for the first time. It's my first edit so suggestions are welcome. --uhforja 18:46, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Why not mention the widespread alternative name "pardel lynx" which means leopard lynx? In many of the other articles about animals, the alternative vernacular names are also mentioned, but in this article there's some kind of refusal to mention alternative names, even though it is commonly done in other Wikipedia articles. 2.104.41.248 (talk) 20:55, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Iberian Lynx is relatively unknown--even amongst biologists and zoologists and other knowledgeable parties. It is certainly not only a rare animal, but rarely known or experienced by the general population. It would BEST serve Wikipedia users, interested parties, and also BEST serve the cause of the Iberian Lynx itself to MERGE this article with the general article on the Lynx. Discussion[edit]

Are you sure you don't mean to move: Spanish Lynx → Iberian Lynx (and appropriate updating of redirects). Wikipedia is case sensitive. Also see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (fauna). I have no opinion of whether this move should happen. Vclaw 1 July 2005 16:43 (UTC

Clean up! Urgent[edit]

  • This article is in need of a radical clean up. There are many spelling and grammatical errors and some subjective observations. I do believe that the Iberian Lynx is beautifull but in an encyclopaedia is unnecesary these type of comments.Francisco Valverde 18:50, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the most endangered cat species in the world?[edit]

So I was watching BBC's Planet Earth today, and saw an Amur Leopard, when I looked it up it said;

"It is one of the rarest felids in the world with an estimated 35 to 45 individuals remaining in the wild." [[1]]

Actually, the iberian lynx is the most endangered cat SPECIES (within the Lynx genus). The Amur Leopard is a SUBSPECIES of the Leopard species (within the Panthera genus). Juancdelalamo (talk) 06:17, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]


small rewording?[edit]

feel free to remove this post if the suggestions seem pointless:

i could see the part that states "if this species died out, it would be the first feline extinction since the Smilodon" confusing some people. i wonder if a slight rewording could make it more certain that you refer only to species extinction, rather than including sub species or whole genus if it were relevant. (maybe include the word 'such' before 'feline extinction' or something, i don't know).

i also wonder if some rewording could be done to make it clearer to some that it's the most endangered species and is not a sub species like the amur leopard. i know it states species but the query above shows it may cause confusion to some. however this may just make things needlessly long winded. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fantiquitous (talk • contribs) 18:55, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Iberian lynxes[edit]

Interesting that I have exchanged emails with LIFE researchers that worked on the bord (Alentejo) between Spain and Portugal, and they were aware about the local presence of iberian lynxes (during several years). The only time that a research (in Portugal) implied interviews on locals and then field propospection on the most promising areas for iberian lynx samples was conducted (like it should have been done before and after and it wasn´t), excrements were found and were analyzed to be identified as belonging to an iberian lynx (it came on the news in 2003):

Interesting how these investigators did a found conclusive proof of iberian lynxes in Portugal so fast and strange why this wasn´t done before and after in other key areas! This methodology is obviously the most correct in my opinion. And I will not even refer more reports from other scientists and locals that have been seing lynxes for a great time and curiously in key important areas for lynxes (including foreigners completely unaware of where lynxes did existed in the recent past). I have a feeling that some interests have been present behind all this for years (literally) and probably negligent behavior, and that some people feel in the right of hiding all the truth and earn loads of economic and touristic benefits from this. On the meanwhile precious animals were probably lost.

I know that probably this post will be removed, because it´s just an inconvenient truth and the people that benefit from the current situation probably are around here as well.


PS: The captivity projects are essential (and the last results from these projects have been very positive). Taxonomy[edit]

Did the Iberian lynx evolve from the Eurasian lynx? or directly from Issoire lynx? Bobcat and Canada lynx articles both state those species evolved from Eurasian lynx; and the diagram on the Canada lynx article indicates that the Iberian lynx is more closely related to the Eurasian lynx than are either of the other two American species.
