John Jones[edit]

The John Jones referred to here could naot have been John Jones (Talysarn) as the latter was not born until 1796. I am editing that reference. D22 (talk) 09:03, 10 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Was Wesley's consecration doubted?[edit]

I looked at the two sources cited to support the claim that "there are some individuals who dispute Wesley's consecration by Bishop Erasmus or condemned it." One of them condemns the ordination without doubting that it occurred; the other avoids confirming or denying it but explains why Wesley might have kept silent about it. I found another link where one Methodist pastor argues that it never occurred (because Wesley never wrote about it in his private journal); however, is there in fact a current consensus on this? Does anyone have more sources from historians on either side? Currently, all I can see is numerous contemporaries asserting it did occur, and one modern person saying he thinks it didn't. I myself looked at the sources provided in both this article and the one on John Wesley, cited as evidence that he was consecrated bishop, and at least two of them assert (when reading the quote in context) that either he had only asked Erasmus to ordain some of his lay preachers, or that he had asked Erasmus to consecrate him bishop, and Erasmus refused as consecration required two bishops according to Canon Law (the latter asserted in a contemporary source here: [1]. It actually seems to me that, while it's pretty clear Erasmus ordained some lay ministers to the priesthood, he didn't (and couldn't) consecrate Wesley as no other bishop was present. The Famous Adventurer (talk) 21:24, 24 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
