Drop goal

Why is this article at "Field goal (rugby)"? No one ever calls them that, as far as I know, and it should be moved to "Drop goal". - PeeJay 23:35, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

They're called drop goals in league as well, it's only the Australians who say 'field goal'. This article should be moved to Drop Goal. Mjefm (talk) 09:08, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

'Drop Goal' is the most common name, and the official name in rugby league. 'Dropped goal', although the official name in union, is virtually never used. 'Field goal' is common only in some parts of the world. This should definitely be renamed Drop Goal. Hippo43 (talk) 13:00, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

There used to be two types of field goal in league, the drop kicked one and a soccer style boot it off the ground. When the latter was removed about 90 years ago, it left just the one type of field goal, the drop kicked style.

Difference between Rugby Union and Rugby League

As well as the points difference (3 in rugby union, 1 in rugby league), there is another important difference between a drop goal which the article originally didn't reflect (and which I have therefore amended). A drop kick which is touched in flight by an opposing player before crossing between the uprights counts as a drop goal in rugby union but not in rugby league. As originally worded the article implied that a ball touched in flight by an opposing player would count as a drop goal in both codes. Apodeictic (talk) 16:18, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
