Name origin[edit]

One likely source is that it was named after Caïenne, one of the sons of the Galibi Indian chief Cépérou from whom Lieutenant-General Poncet de Brétigny (on behalf of French King Louis XIII) acquired the land on which the city lies (in 1643). Reference this link to a book by Jean-Michel Lemaire. Indirectly, I think that the French word la caïenne originally referred to some kind of stove. Backspace 07:00, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is it really true as is stated in the article that the cayenne pepper is named after the city of Cayenne? There is no source given. I always would have assumed that this would have been the case without any doubt, up until today. However, I just read in Online Etymology Dictionary [1] that it is "mistakenly associated with the town of Cayenne" and that the name of the pepper is in fact from the Tupi word (a language native to Brazil) kyynha meaning "capsicum". First-pass copy-edit/translation[edit]

I removed some rather egregious word salad caused by mistranslations at some point in the article’s existence. I got interested and added images and a couple of sections about the culture. There is considerably more material about the carnivals at the linked main articles, btw.

Since i just did major surgery I am leaving the article tagged as needing a copy-edit — which is how it came to my own attention — since it is easy in that kind of work to omit words or whatever, and I have primarily been translating, whereas it is possible that there is a more elegant way to express certain things when one is not following the structure of another text. This is definitely a translation, by the way, which almost exactly corresponds to the French article but contained some serious errors of translation that made me question whether it wasn’t translated French=>Polish=>English or something of the kind. Feel free to ping me if there are questions, since the original article was almost certainly French (so that version is probably definitive), and the descriptions of the carnival in particular could be clearer. However there do seem to be articles in English about the Touloulou and such that should help a lot Elinruby (talk) 08:12, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

notes on translation:

Place is usually a square but can be quite large, such as the Place de la Bastille. I have translated Place des Palmistes as “Plaza” in an attempt to convey size (they called it a savannah at one point). I don’t think Place is a good translation, since in English this is usually applied to a side street or cul de sac. Palmistes also puzzled me since as far as I know it isn’t a word in French either, so I just Anglicized the spelling. The point appears to be that there are palm trees there, shrug.
The section titled Sights appears to largely duplicate the section titled Heritage. Perhaps they should be merged. The section titled Heritage perhaps should be rewritten or condensed. Do we really care, for example, what year the pulpit was replaced?

Adding pictures more representative of the diversity of the city[edit]

Hi, I just wanted to warn that I have the intention to Change some pictures in this article that are more representative of the diversity of the city. If someone are opposed to this changes in any way, we can discuss about it here ! PouLagwiyann (talk) 13:09, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean you want to revert my edit of the infobox and put back the pictures that were there before my edit, then I don't see how these pictures are more representative of the diversity of the city. First of all your pictures are large, take a lot of space (5 pictures in total at the top of the infobox), and make the infobox clunky. I purposefully selected smaller pictures, and only 3 of them (vs 5), so as not to make the infobox super large. This is after all an encyclopedia article, not a postcard or a tourist brochure. Also, I don't see how your pictures are more representative of the diversity of the city. For example I included a picture of the beaches of Cayenne, whereas your five pictures only show the historic city center. I also included the picture of a bank of Cayenne to sort of reflect the economy of the city, whereas your pictures only show historic monuments. The new pictures that I was adding represents totally well the city of Cayenne and represents the monuments and most famous place of the town. Your pictures are old and not really representative of the city. A lot of city, like Paris, New York, London etc, have multiple pictures, I don’t why it would be a problem for French Guiana towns. I can reduce the size of the picture. But this article needs new pictures, to refresh and make it more attractive to be seen and read. The goal is to make the articles more readable and easier to look at, not so simple and outdated. PouLagwiyann (talk) 02:54, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
