Planá (German: Plan) is a municipality and village in České Budějovice District in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 300 inhabitants.

Etymology[edit]

The word planá meant 'barren', but it also denoted a wide, open landscape.[2]

Geography[edit]

Planá is located about 4 kilometres (2 mi) southwest of České Budějovice. It lies in the České Budějovice Basin. The Vltava river forms the southern and eastern municipal borders.

History[edit]

The first written mention of Planá is from 1259.[2] Between 1961 and 1990, it was an administrative part of Homole. Since 24 November 1990, it has been a separate municipality.[3]

Transport[edit]

The I/3 road (part of the European route E55), specifically the section from České Budějovice to the Czech-Austrian border in Dolní Dvořiště, runs through the municipality.

A part of České Budějovice Airport is located in the municipal territory.

Sights[edit]

Planá is poor in monuments. The only protected cultural monument is a homestead from 1881.[6] In the centre of Planá is the Chapel of the Holy Trinity.
