Hanover is an unincorporated community located in Milam County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 27 in 2000.
History[edit]
According to local reports, the Swedenborg Settlers colony, a communal living experiment akin to La Réunion, was located here in the 1880s. Most of the participants left once the project failed. German settlers may have given the town of Hanover, which received a post office in 1890, the name of their old residence. By 1892, there were 25 people living in the village, along with a general shop, a gristmill, and a gin. In 1906, the Hanover post office was shut down. On the community's 1988 county highway maps, a church and a business were indicated, and 27 residents were listed in 2000.[2]
Geography[edit]
Hanover is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 2095 and 3242, 10 mi (16 km) southeast of Cameron in eastern Milam County.[2]
Education[edit]
In 1903, Hanover was served by schools in Prairie Point. They each had two teachers for 69 White students and 89 Black students. In 1920, they joined the Liberty School District, then the Milano Independent School District in 1931.[2]
