Detmold is an unincorporated community located in Milam County, Texas, United States.[1]

History[edit]

The first settlers in Detmold were German. The 1941 county highway map showed a church and several scattered houses and businesses in the community. It continued to be listed as a community in the 1980s and 1990s.[2]

Locals Carl Fick, August Boening, and Ernst Richter donated land in 1900 so that a Lutheran church and cemetery could be built there. The grave of Gottfried Eschberger, the earliest known grave, was discovered in 1903. There are more than 175 burials at the cemetery, many of which have grave markers with German surnames and inscriptions. The church congregation moved to Thorndale in 1963, but the cemetery is still there as a visible legacy of the tiny town.[3]

Geography[edit]

Detmold is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 437, 443,[2] and 486, 4 mi (6.4 km) north of Thorndale in western Milam County.[3]

Education[edit]

In 1903, Detmold had a school with one teacher and 38 students. It continued to operate in 1941 and joined the Thorndale Independent School District in 1946.[2]
