GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Doctor Who at FAR

I have nominated Doctor Who for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Cirt (talk) 02:55, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello there. I see that the cleanup of the Sherman Theatre article is on your "to-do" list. This article has been getting on my nerves for some time, particularly when I pass the theatre (I live in Cardiff). So I've given it a substantial rewrite. It's basically quite a short stub now, so still needs expanding, but the cleanup is done :-) Dylanfromthenorth (talk) 07:46, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:05, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Request for comment on Biographies of living people

Hello Wikiproject! Currently there is a discussion which will decide whether wikipedia will delete 49,000 articles about a living person without references, here:

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Since biographies of living people covers so many topics, nearly all wikiproject topics will be effected.

The two opposing positions which have the most support is:

  1. supports the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, User:Jehochman
  2. opposes the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, except in limited circumstances, User:Collect

Comments are welcome. Keep in mind that by default, editor's comments are hidden. Simply press edit next to the section to add your comment.

Please keep in mind that at this point, it seems that editors support deleting unreferenced article if they are not sourced, so your project may want to pursue the projects below.

Propose renaming Category:Bus routes in Cardiff

Hi

I have proposed renaming the newly-created Category:Bus routes in Cardiff to Category:Bus transport in Cardiff.

The reasons are explained at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 March 21#Category:Bus_routes_in_Cardiff, where your comments are welcome. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:11, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

As creator of the category, I have supported this move to include infrastructure as well.

Cardiff articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Cardiff articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Cardiff will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Cardiff's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 22:04, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

2nd Cardiff Meetup (1 November 2013)

A few sober members at the 2nd Cardiff Wikimeet!

The Second Cardiff Meetup announcement has just been made. Details are available here where you can sign up. It will coincide with the EduWiki Conference. Please come along! --Rhyswynne (talk) 10:15, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Just to let you know, we'll be upstars at the Urban Tap House, Westgate Street tonight. Laters!--Rhyswynne (talk) 13:48, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
Following a request for feedback on my talk page, here's how it went (from my perspective):

Unsurprisingly, most at the wikimeet were those who were attending EduWiki 2013 in the city, and as I’d missed the conference, I got feedback from the day.

Cardiff/Wales/cy:wp specific

  • A few users/potential users from Cardiff were present, and I got to meet User:Ham. *User:Llywelyn2000 mentioned that he’d been in contact with a group of students at Cardiff University who want to set up Student Society there. He’s also been in contact with two departments in Swansea University who are interested in collaborating.
  • One problem on cy:wp related to low number of editors is keeping facts up-to-date, so roll-out of WikiData will be very welcome. User:RexxS, who was at the wikimeet, has offered to help us out (and has already started).

A meet-up in the future

I’d really like to arrange a Cardiff specific wikimeet sometime in the new year, with the aim of possible arranging an event in the city in the near future. I’m thinking of either a workshop for beginners or an GLAM themed edit-a-thon/Back Stage Pass type event. We can obviously arrange something like this on-line, but it would be nice to meet editors face-to-face to discuss ideas, and who we should target. Cardiff has a lot of institutions (local and Wales wide) which we could approach, and it would be handy to know if anyone has any links/contacts that we can ‘exploit’. Again User:Llywelyn2000 has been encouraging/hassling(!) some to open up content. Off top of my head, there are:

  • National Museum Wales (National Museum and St Fagan)
  • Various Cardiff Council departments e.g Cardiff Story Museum, Parks
  • Butetown History & Arts Centre
  • Glamorgan Archives
  • Cardiff University (various departments, Special Collections and Archives at the library)
  • Mushin Museum (History of Anaesthesia Museum), University of Wales Hospital **New**
  • National Bodies such as Literature Wales, RIBA Wales, Charities, S4C

So, does anyone have any thoughts/would anyone like to meet up?--Rhyswynne (talk) 13:06, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I'm interested and I may have some national museum contacts - I'll explore that. EdwardLane (talk) 03:57, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
OK I have facebook contact with staff at the national museum (paleontology) and if you're interested in sorting out one of the backstage pass type events they can put you/us in touch with teh right folk. I'm guessing I'll need to chat to Rhyswynne if this is going anywehre but drop me a message here. EdwardLane (talk) 00:27, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi Edward! Can you email me with names of your contacts at the Museum. I'll then arrange a meeting: your backstage suggestion could be a good 'foot-in'th-door!'. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:31, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Editathon at Swansea: 28th January 2015

Editathon Poster

An Editathon is to be held at Swansea University on the 28th January; this is the second to be held at Swansea. New and experienced Wikipedians are welcome to beef up exiting articles and create new ones based on Medieval and Early Modern Women. The university has an exciting proect: 'Women Negotiating the Boundaries of Justice: Britain and Ireland c.1100-c.1750 which 'explores women's relative access to justice in various parts of Britain and Ireland between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries.'

This may be the start of something really good. And there's even a free lunch! Please join us. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 11:25, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

A requested move discussion has been initiated for SWALEC Stadium to be moved to Sophia Gardens (cricket ground). This page is of interest to this WikiProject and interested members may want to participate in the discussion here. —RMCD bot 22:49, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!

  • What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
  • When? June 2015
  • How can you help?
1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing!

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
