Please create an account on Wikipedia if you have not done so as yet.
- Join the dashboard page for today's workshop.
- Have a look at our new Histropedia timeline of Women's suffrage in Scotland.
- Have a look at our Navigation box template we add to the foot of pages about the Scottish suffragettes.
- There is a draft biography you can look at and use as an exemplar: Jocelyn Bell Burnell or the Mary Blathwayt.
- Would you like to do more editing after today? There is a WikiProject Women in Red you can join to take part in their monthly themed editing events and we hold in-person Wiki Women in Red editing events at the University of Edinburgh too.

About the event[edit]
Have you ever wondered why the information in Wikipedia is extensive for some topics and scarce for others? On Wednesday 5 June 2019, the University's Information Services team will run an edit-a-thon in partnership with the RSE Young Academy of Scotland, at The Royal Society of Edinburgh. Full Wikipedia editing training will be given, followed by an editathon that will focus on improving the quality of articles about female Fellows of the RSE.
Working together with Academic Support librarians, archivists & academic colleagues we will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles covering areas which could stand to be improved; including distinguished Edinburgh alumni, historic locations etc.

How do I prepare?[edit]
- Sign up for the event
- Create a Wikipedia account
- Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided)
- Learn about editing if you like: Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia for more information
- Think about what you would like to edit - please prepare some materials to bring with you on the day

Hit list of articles to be created or improved[edit]
Helpful updates could be as simple as: Making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; Adding new inline citations/references; Adding a photo; Adding an infobox; Adding data to more fields in an existing infobox; Creating headings; Adding categories; etc.

WiR works by filling in missing articles based on extensive lists of needed topics. The index to our wide range of topics and nationalities can be found at the Redlist index. Please make these red links blue. Notable women without a Wikipedia biography can be added to any crowd-sourced redlists they match; and added to wikidata such that they're included in wikidata-derived redlists. We also have a guide to adding names to redlists.
