Student Experience Grant

• Submitted application for up to £5000 from University of Edinburgh Student Experience Grants fund on 11 November 2021 in collaboratin with 3 student partners who will work for 12 weeks in 2022 to research and improve coverage of LGBT History, Gender History and Black History from February to May 2022. This has been approved as of 7 January 2022.

Access to Industry Wikipedia event at St. Cecilia’s Hall

E. McAndrew facilitated a Wikipedia training and editing event for the ‘Access to Industry’ charity which works across Scotland with unemployed people who face barriers to employment. The project took place at St. Cecilia’s Hall museum over two weeks’ on 25 November and 2 December 2021 and was co-ordinated with Laura Beattie, Community Outreach Officer at University of Edinburgh Museums, and Magda Gucman, Access to Industry.

Women in Red workshops

Olive Smith (masseuse)

Two new Women in Red workshops were held in November and December 2021.

• 21 new articles were created at the 26 November event inc. Olive Smith (1880–1916) who was a masseuse and physical training instructor in the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service (SWH) in Serbia in World War I. She died of malaria, within two months of volunteering with Dr Agnes Bennett's SWH unit at Ostrovo, and is buried at the Allies cemetery in Thessaloniki. She is memorialised in her home town Haltwhistle and at the teacher training college she worked at, in Glasgow. Also Nora Milnes (1882-1972) who was a British economist, social worker, educator and author. Born in London, she spent her working life in London and Edinburgh, where she played a prominent role in the development of social work as a professional activity worthy of a place in higher education.

Jean Aitken Bell (1882 – 1957) who was a Scottish nurse who served with Dr. Elsie Inglis's Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service in Serbia. She was among those who were given medals by both Britain and Serbia for war services, including enduring the dangerous winter mountain Serbian retreat, taking their injured patients over the mountains in winter to safety; she served July to December 1915. Also Elspeth Green (née Henderson; 1913–2006) who was an NCO and officer in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). She was a plotter during the Battle of Britain, serving at Biggin Hill where she won the Military Medal for her bravery during repeated air raids.

After the war, she worked for the British Council and the first Edinburgh International Festival.

Strategic Aim 2 - Digital Literacy

Work with partners to develop digital, data and information literacy through Wikimedia

• Support the education sector’s engagement with Wikimedia as a digital literacy tool
• Facilitate Wikimedia-based digital, data and information literacy projects with other partners
• Create content and resources for learners and educators
• Advocate for the inclusion of Wikimedia in curriculum, syllabus and course development
• Collaborate with the civil society sector and other partners to combat misinformation

Progress

Wikimedia in the Curriculum - current work

• Confirmed with Philippa Sheail and Michael Gallagher that a Wikipedia component will take place on the Digital Education MSc on 15 February 2022 and discussed what it will include.
• Three to four new case studies to be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Will start writing these in late November/December with a view to having a new digital edition to be relaunched in 2022.
• The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment for Semester One will conclude on 14 January 2022 with 36-40 out of the cohort undertaking it as an elective. Link to student's chosen articles this semester. The Semester Two assignment will commence on 9 February 2022.
• Confirmed with Dr. Glaire Anderson on the History of Art course programme that she wishes to repeat the assignment looking at evaluating, improving and illustrating articles related to Islamic Art in semester two. This will commence on 17 January 2022 and conclude on 14 February 2022. Guest speaker, Dr. Martin Poulter will join us on 31 January 2022.

Podcast on Wikimedia in education - episodes now published

• First episode is now live for a podcast series recorded on the 24th of May 2021 for the University's influential Teaching Matters blog is being edited by a student intern , Eric Berger. Topics discussed included: Wikipedia and History (1hr); Wikipedia and academia in the new normal(1hr); Wikipedia in 321 languages(1hr); Wikipedia, Medicine and Science Communication(30 mins); Wikipedia and the Gender Gap(30 mins). Professor Diana Paton, Translation Studies students, History Society students, Jason Evans, Lorna Campbell, Lucy Crompton-Reid, Prof Norah Spears, and Prof Linda Bauld all contributed.

Conferences

• Astract approved for the LILAC Information Literacy conference 11-13 April 2022 about our new 'Edinburgh Award - Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia'.

Research data in Wikidata

• Met with historian of medicine at University of Edinburgh, Lukas Engelmann, on 19 November 2022 to discuss his ERC grant project to document the history of 20th century epidemiology using open data in Wikidata and Wikibase. Following this discussion, E. McAndrew connected Lukas Engelmann with experienced Wikidatan, Daniel Mietchen, to discuss their mutual areas of interest and collaborating on this project.

Wikipedia Editing - a new Edinburgh Award underway

• The first iteration of the Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia - a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia commenced on 9 December 2021 and will conclude on 6 April 2022. This would allow the 13 students who have submitted their 400 word action plans to develop important information literacy, digital research, communication and collaborative skills ahead of the world of work and accredit them for undertaking 55 hours (or more) of Wikipedia work over an extended period. The first iteration has been negotiated in collaboration with Kirsty Stewart and Gavin McCabe at the University of Edinburgh Career Service and in collaboration with our Wikimedia student interns, Erin Boyle and Clea Strathmann. • The Wikidata map of Accused Witches of Scotland was featured in the Scotland is Now Twitter and Instagram feeds. The Twitter account has 47,100 followers. Scotland Is Now is part of the Scottish Government’s marketing team helping to promote Scotland internationally.
