G5: Develop, support and engage with other Wikimedia & Open Knowledge Communities Be an advocate for open knowledge with the University, for example by working with Library & University Collections to develop or change policies (e.g. Access and Reuse of Digital Collections), systems or processes which would allow greater collaboration between Wikimedia UK and the University. Create best practice documents as needed.

Outcomes[edit]

This month has been one of delivering Wikipedia editathons (five sessions during the History of Medicine editathon and two sessions for Art+Feminism) as well as continued advocacy and public outreach as I have been introducing myself through emails, blogs, presentations, face-to-face encounters in University settings or outwith the University in order to promote the Wikimedian in Residence project and the cause of Open Knowledge. I presented at the Learning Technology Monthly Showcase & Networking meeting on 25th February 2016 to contribute to volunteer engagement and make the assembled audience aware how easy it is to edit, what the residency is all about and to also introduce them to Histropedia. I also heavily promoted our Art+Feminism editathon events in face-to-face chats with students over a couple of days with a stall setup in the main university library and also by using Twitter, email, posters etc. I have been championing the new WYSIWYG Visual Editor interface and ran a Staff CPD training session on 10th March 2016 which attracted some interest which I will make use of in promoting a better attended session next month. I have continued my Skype sessions with Navino Evans, co-founder of Histropedia, to appraise myself of Wikidata and Histropedia. And will now also be conversing with Kelly Doyle, Wikimedian in Residence at West Virginia University, in order to share good practice. The History of Medicine Wikipedia editathon was shortlisted for an Innovative Learning Week award out of nearly 300 events run during Innovative Learning Week. Sadly we lost out to TEDx but our event garnered praise and we received certificates for being shortlisted. We also received an 'Innovative Learning Week Superhero' award for the hard work put into the editathons.

Projects Delivered[edit]

The second month has been spent preparing & delivering the first high-profile Wikipedia editathon event (History of Medicine) over 5 sessions for the University of Edinburgh's Innovative Learning Week. This editathon was a success with 14-19 attendees per day: delivering 5 new Wikipedia articles, 63 improved articles and over 500 images uploaded to Wikicommons. The event was shortlisted out of the nearly 300 events at Innovative Learning Week for 'Most Impact' and I received an 'ILW Superhero' award for my hard work during the editathons.

I also attended the Art+Feminism editathon at the National Galleries of Scotland on 5th March 2016, where I had the opportunity to continue the association with the National Galleries of Scotland with my colleague, Sara Thomas, Wikimedian in Residence at Museums and Galleries Scotland, leading the session in order to complete the Wikipedia articles on the 45 women artists included in the Modern Scottish Women editathon begun in January 2016.

Only half a dozen articles were left to be created for the 45 artists mentioned above after this event so I staged an impromptu International Women's Day editathon on 8th March 2016. This was attended by only 4 editors but it provided an opportunity to run my own event and to engage face-to-face with the university students in order to tell them about the event & the residency in two morning sessions at Edinburgh University Main Library which lead to several positive interactions & emails obtained. Following this event I made contact with Pittsburgh University Library, the Art Gallery of Ontario and Kelly Doyle, Wikimedian in Residence for Gender Equity at West Virginia University in order to share good practice gleaned from our recent experiences of the Art+Feminism Wikiproject.
