Strategic Goal 1[edit]

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes[edit]

  • Monthly Wiki meetup for Women in Red held on 24 October 2017 - 3 new articles created and 1 improved.
  • Black History Month editathon on 25 October in collaboration with the student History Society resulted in 7 new articles.
  • Met with PhD student Muireann Crowley to help research & plan the Lost Literary Women editathon for the School of Literature, Language and Culture.

Strategic Goal 2[edit]

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes[edit]

  • Presented a lightning talk with our Open Ed. student intern Tomas Sanders on the power of open education at the When Education Becomes Possible event for the University Chaplaincy's International Storytelling Festival event on 25 October 2017.
  • Presented at the Community Heritage Conference 2017 with SLIC Wikimedian Sara Thomas to further build on this advocacy work in the heritage sector. This resulted in Lorna Campbell being contacted by Kevin Grant, publications grants manager for the Archaeology and World Heritage Team, for advice on how to make Historic Environment Scotland's research more freely and easily accessible and to disseminate their findings widely to non-academic audiences.
  • Accepted invitation to speak at Queen's University Belfast in March 2018.
  • Confirmed dates for an editathon at Teeside University in April 2018.
  • Assistant Principal, Melissa Highton, spoke about the Edinburgh Seven and Changing The Way Stories Are Told'' with Wikipedia at the Physiological Society event on 13th October 2017.
  • Attended the first ever Wikidata Conference in Berlin and received advice on how to manage the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft import into Wikidata and the Edinburgh Research Archive's thesis collection data. 12 videos of presentations from the conference have been added to Media Hopper and 9 videos to Youtube.
  • My colleague, Anne-Marie Scott, attended the annual Mozfest Conference in London with Alice White, Wikimedian in Residence at the Wellcome Library, where they delivered a presentation on Wiki Games and brought back their excellent Wiki Games SPLOT resource to be used as a way of engaging & sharing with others as a self-directed reusable resource.
  • Met with Academic Support Librarian, Marshall Dozier, and her colleagues, Donna Watson and Ruth Jenkins, to discuss putting a workshop proposal in for the EAHIL Conference in Cardiff to demonstrate practically how Health Information Librarians could and should run Wikipedia editathons in their own institutions to improve information literacy and Wikipedia's coverage of health-related articles.
  • Met with Brendan Hill to explore how the University of Edinburgh's Lecture Recording service might benefit from and contribute to the Wikimedia projects.

WikidataCon 28-29 October 2017 The Tagesspiegel venue, in Berlin. 200 The first ever Wikidata Conference had over 200 attendees and a ram-packed 2 day schedule. Attended many interesting sessions and discussed variety of ways the University of Edinburgh could benefit from engaging with Wikidata; especially in terms of the import of the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft data. 12 videos of presentations from the conference have been added to Media Hopper and 9 videos to Youtube.
Community Heritage Conference 10 November 2017 Technology & Innovation Centre, University of Strathclyde, 99 George Street, Glasgow 15-20 Presentation with Sara Thomas (Wikimedian at SLIC) on the opportunities for collaboration between heritage organisations and the Wikimedia projects.

Strategic Goal 3[edit]

To support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK.

Outcomes[edit]

  • Wrote an article for the Teaching Matters website on How to get started running a Wikipedia assignment.
  • Trained two would-be course leaders at the Teaching with Wikipedia training session on 19/10.
  • Supported to drop-in clinics for the Wikipedia translation assignment on the Translation Studies MSc course this month.
  • Attended the Data Science for Design MSc's annual Data Fair where I pitched the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft as a project to be imported into Wikidata so the datasets could be better used as linked open data. Two groups (6 students) signed up for the project.
  • Trained 10 students how to edit Wikidata and add verifiable data to Wikidata for alumni of Glasgow Caledonian University. They made 43 edits to Wikidata and added references so the edits made were verifiable. This resulted in a complete dataset for all the alumni of Glasgow Caledonian University that we currently know about.
  • As a result, we were able to generate a complete list of Glasgow Caledonian University alumni, and because Wikidata is linked data, we were able to create a map of places of birth for Glasgow Caledonian University alumni and a timeline of their dates of birth filtered by country of birth.
  • Following this Introduction to Wikidata session, we held a first dedicated How to import the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database into Wikidata session with the two groups of students from the Data Science for Design MSc who had opted to work on it as part of their course project. Navino Evans from Histropedia was available by Skype link for this session. The students divided the datasets into witches, witch trials and people involved in administering the witch trials. Thereafter they were invited to submit their analysis of each of the three datasets and how they could be modelled into Wikidata.

Projects/events in development[edit]

  • Wikidata project on the Data Science for Design MSc to go ahead now we have two groups of students confirmed as wanting to help import the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft into Wikidata.
  • An editathon themed on Scottish Contemporary Artists will now be held in Friday 24th November 2017 with confirmed involvement from the School of Design Informatics.
  • Met with Muireann Crowley, PhD student, to help facilitate an AHRC-funded 'Lost Literary Edinburgh' editathon on 24 November 2017. Anne-Marie Scott and Sara Thomas will lead this event.
  • Confirmed with Felix Stein at Social Anthropology about a Wikipedia editing assignment for the Global Health MSc course - postponed until October 2018 due to Felix working in Haiti at the moment.
  • Wikipedia workshop to take place on 23 November with Karen Gregory on the Digital Sociology MSc course with a view to further work in Spring 2018.
  • Discussed with Sophie Nicholls at Teeside University about doing a 'Regeneration' editathon and Train the Trainer events down there - dates in Spring 2018 now finalised as April 28th 2017.
  • Continuing to support colleagues, Andrew Kirk and Christina Hussell, at the University of Edinburgh's Digital Skills team to run regular Wikipedia training workshops. Scheduled extra workshop on 4 December to give them extra practice.
  • Showcase 'Wiki Loves Libraries' event for SDLC and SLIC representatives still mooted - liaising with Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator on date and format.
  • Planned Wikisource workshop on 7 December 2017 with Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator, in addition to continuing the import of thesis data to Wikidata from the Edinburgh Research Archive.
  • Proposed three events for the university's Festival of Creative Learning (19-23 February 2018): a Wikidata hackathon, a Histropedia workshop and a Women in Medicine editathon.
  • Liaising with Susan Ross, Gaelic Wikipedian at the National Library of Scotland, on a submission for the Gaelic Studies Conference at the University of Edinburgh next summer.

  • The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Youtube now has accrued over 20,000 views of its 61 videos with 96 subscribers (Two thousand two hundred more views approx. since last month and 17 more subscribers than last month).
