Objectives[edit]

G1: Develop Open Knowledge	Be an advocate or open knowledge within the University's collections and community, which would enrich Wikipedia and sister projects and enhance the University's role in open knowledge and public engagement. Identify opportunities for content improvement and image releases.
G2a: Develop, involve & engage WMUK volunteers	Organise and host workshops for University staff, students and public to enable them to directly contribute their knowledge and expertise to develop Wikipedia articles.
G3: Reduce barriers to accessing open knowledge	Design and manage a programme of activities to improve collaboration between the Institution and Wikimedia UK and Wikimedia community, leading to a sustainable relationship and more joint projects in the future.

Outcomes[edit]

This month has been one of advocacy and public outreach as I have been introducing myself through emails, blogs, presentations, face-to-face encounters in University settings or outwith the University in order to promote the Wikimedian in Residence project and the cause of Open Knowledge. I helped prepare the Innovative Learning Week editathons to encourage new & experienced Wikipedia editors to engage with Open Knowledge. I also attended an Open Knowledge meetup at the National Library of Scotland on Tuesday 19th January to discuss Open Knowledge subject matters. I presented at the Web Publishers Community meeting on 3rd February 2016 to contribute to volunteer engagement. I also heavily promoted our ILW editathon event in face-to-face chats, Twitter, email, posters etc. I have been championing the new WYSIWYG Visual Editor interface for the last few weeks to let potential new users see how easy it is to engage with and help create Open Knowledge. I have signed up to and engaged with the ScotWiki mailing list, the Wikimedia UK mailing list, the Wikidata Muggle Outreach discussion group and had several Skype sessions with Navino Evans, co-founder of Histropedia, to appraise myself of Wikidata and Histropedia.

Partnerships[edit]

Discussed future collaborations with the National Galleries of Scotland following the Modern Scottish Women editathon as they were keen to do another event almost right away.
Discussed with Dr. Heather Rea of the Beltane Public Engagement Network collaborating on an International Women's day event.
Discussed a future collaboration with the University's library & archive following their next Library Committee meeting.
Discussed regular meetups with the University's Digital Curator, Gavin Willshaw, as he is keen to be involved.
Arranged meetings with Anouk Lang, Digitial Humanities lecturer, to discuss her previous work using Wikipedia in student assignments.
Arranged a meeting at the University of Edinburgh Wiki-Vet school to discuss a Wiki-Vet editathon.
Arranged a meeting with Professor Richard Rodger (Professor of Economic & Social History) to discuss collaborating on the MESH project (Mapping Edinburgh's Social History).

Planned activities[edit]

To host the Innovative Learning Week 2016 History of Medicine Wikipedia editathon on 16-18th February 2016.
I am presenting at a Monthly Networking Showcase on 25th February to run through how to edit Wikipedia and how to use Histropedia.
To attend the Art and Feminism editathon on Saturday 5th March 2016 run by Sara Thomas.
To attend the Open Education Resources conference on 19-20 April at the University of Edinburgh.

Projects Delivered[edit]

Although the residency officially started on the 11th of January 2016, two days of intensive training were spent (including sessions on Volunteer Engagement and Project Management) with Wikimedia UK at their head office in London on 8th-9th January.

The first month has been spent preparing for the first high-profile Wikipedia editathon event for the University of Edinburgh's Innovative Learning Week and liaising with the library and archives staff to ensure all angles were covered ahead of the event. A high level of support for the residency has been shown by University of Edinburgh staff, in particular the members of the Learning, Teaching & Web Division and staff from the main library who have been involved in previous years' Wiki events.

I attended the Open Knowledge meetup at the National Library of Scotland on 19th January 2016 where I made a lot of good contacts. I also attended the Modern Scottish Women editathon at the National Galleries of Scotland on 25th January 2016, where I had the opportunity to meet with some local editors and my colleague, Sara Thomas, Wikimedian in Residence at Museums and Galleries Scotland, in order to see how an editathon was put together.
