Projects delivered

Strategic Goal 1

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Mary Susan McIntosh - British sociologist, feminist, political activist and campaigner for lesbian and gay rights in the UK.

Outcomes

• Discussed with Maggie Carson, Lecturer at the School of Health in Social Science, about an impromptu International Nurses Day editathon on 12 May. Due to a clashing IND event, this has led on to discussions about holding an event in the Autumn term.
• Created a page on Jennie Baines, suffragette, which has led to the idea of holding regular Wiki Meetups themed on writing articles to improve female representation online through focusing on source texts such as the Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women.
• Newly created pages on notable women can then be nominated for inclusion on Wikipedia's front page on the Did You Know section. Raising the visibility of pages, such as sociologist Mary Susan McIntosh, has demonstrated a real impact with 7000 views approx. out of the total number of 8653 views for her page achieved in one day on the front page.

• Mohalla Clinics - primary health centres in the state of New Delhi in India, that offer a basic package of essential health services including medicines, diagnostics, and consultation free of cost. Mohalla in Hindi means neighborhood or community. These clinics serve as the first point of contact for the population, offer timely services, and reduce the load of referrals to secondary and tertiary health facilities in the state.
• Joanna Overing - American anthropologist based in Scotland. She has conducted research on egalitarianism, indigenous cosmology, philosophical anthropology, aesthetics, the ludic and linguistics through fieldwork in Amazonia. She has extensively studied indigenous Piaroa people in the Orinoco basin of Venezuela.

• Global Health - New section added on Neglected tropical diseases.
• Maternal death - 289,000 women died of pregnancy or childbirth related causes in 2013. These causes range from severe bleeding to obstructed labour. Citation added.
• Memory and aging - short section added on Social Science Research on Memory and Ageing.

Translation during Anthropology and Global Health editathon - a work in progress

• Translation of Georgina Born (British academic, anthropologist and musician) into Spanish using the Content Translation tool.

Strategic Goal 2

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

• Met with Gillian Daly and Gill Hamilton to discuss best practice for the new Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) residency supporting public libraries in Scotland.
• Attended Open Knowledge Network event on 28th April 2017 and organised by Lorna Campbell. Dr. Chris Harlow shared best practice with colleagues on the Wikipedia assignment in Reproductive Biology and Dr. Alexander Chow shared best practice with colleagues on the Wikipedia assignment in World Christianity.
• Delivered a practical 1.5 hour workshop session on Histropedia and Wikidata (slides) at the end of this event where we added 'awarded' data to female Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Outcomes

• Anthropology editathon held on 11 May has led to suggested 200 word assignment for Anthropology students to contribute to Wikipedia's coverage of anthropology in Autumn semester.
• Discussed improvements and scheduled workshops for Translation Studies MSc programme for Autumn 2017.
• Scheduled workshops for Reproductive Biology Hons. assignment to continue in for 3rd iteration in Autumn 2017.
• Delivered two Train the Trainer workshops for the Digital Skills team to help embed Wikipedia editing within the Digital Skills programme.
• Met with Michael Seery, Reader in Education at the School of Chemistry, to discuss his use of Digital Badges for lab skills, and he has now suggested we collaborate on an Ada Lovelace Day: Women in Chemistry event as well as supporting chemistry students to write articles & learn about information literacy in the run up to the event. This led to him writing a blog article too on Wikipedia and Writing.

Digitisation

Collections identified for potential future upload:

• Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator, has uploaded a test case of Thomas Jehu's PhD thesis to Wikisource during the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February 2017 and is looking to upload selected other PhD theses and Open Books to Wikisource in the coming months.
  • Update 22/5: Next Wikisource session will be on 16th June 2017 where Gavin Willshaw and I will be discussing this and holding a short Transcribe-a-thon.
• A WiR and Library proposal has been drafted and passed to colleagues at Library & University Collections.
  • Update 22/5: A meeting was held on 5th May to discuss a World Music Day event focused on the Musical Instrument Collection at the newly relaunched St. Cecilia's Hall but this has since had to be shelved.
• Paul Barnaby is liaising with Navino Evans to see if Histropedia can be employed with the Our History site.
  • Update 22/5: Have emailed Paul Barnaby to see if we can assist further with this.
• We have been given permission to upload images where WW1 nurse orderly Ethel Moir is the creator from the Capital Collections website.
  • Update: Have uploaded one image to Ethel Moir's Wikipedia page on 12 May 2017 as part of International Nurses Day and am looking to upload more at Wiki meetups in coming months ahead.

Projects/events in development

• Arranged with Stephen Kaye on the Mastercard Scholarship Foundation to hold an African Alumni & Swahili editathon in December 2017 (to be followed up in September 2017).
• Ruth Burgon at the Fruitmarket Gallery has proposed an editathon themed on Scottish Contemporary Artists to be held in November 2017 with potential involvement from the Informatics and History of Art course. Liaising with course leaders at Informatics to assess their involvement.
• Continuing discussions with Pauline Ward and Navino Evans about a Wikidata Showcase event at Repository Fringe 2017 - focus areas being the involvement of students and the donation of data to Wikidata (bulk importing).
• Liaising with Navino Evans, Lydia Pintscher and Lorna Campbell around writing a Wikidata element to any new Open Data Policy (focused on 'how').
• Continuing discussions with Jake Broadhurst and Jamie Cross about a Wikimedia event for 60-70 undergraduate students attending the Undergraduate Research Conference on 28 June 2017.
• Continued discussions with Melissa Highton, Lorna Campbell, Susan Ross and Daria Cybulska about the Celtic Knot: Wikipedia Language Conference on Thursday 6 July 2017. Programme is now decided upon and speakers all confirmed. Booking is now open.
• Continuing discussions with Felix Stein at Social Anthropology about a Wikipedia editing assignment.
• Arranging meeting with Sheila MacNeill, Senior Lecturer in Digital Learning and part of the Academic Development Team at Glasgow Caledonian University, to discuss what what a Wikimedian does (or could do) with a view to her looking into making the case for a GCU residency.
• Arranging meeting with Karen Gregory, Digital Sociology, regarding a Sociology Wikipedia workshop in Autumn 2017.
• Planning an Ada Lovelace Day event focused on Women in Chemistry and liaising with Michael Seery, Reader in Education at the School of Education, as to whether this can be a joint event with the Royal Society of Chemistry. Michael is also looking at getting his students to conduct Wikipedia editing work in the run up to this event.
• Continuing discussions about the use and implementation of Open Badges at the university. Now need to discuss with Wikimedia UK about next steps regarding a Wikimedia Open Badge framework.

• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Media Hopper now has 131 videos. 17 more have newly been uploaded including 11 from the OER17 conference and new video walkthroughs on the Programs & Events Dashboard, Word Count tool, Find Link tool, Histropedia and a 2 min 47 sec clip on the Edinburgh residency itself (viewed 68 times).
• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Youtube now has accrued 11156 views of its 33 videos with 53 subscribers (2000 more views approx. than last month and 2 more subscribers than last month).
