Strategic Goal 1[edit]

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes[edit]

  • Led a taster editathon for staff celebrating 150 years of the Regius Chair of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering on 11th January 2017. 1 new article drafted , 3 improved articles and 2 new Histropedia timelines.

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes[edit]

  • Continuing discussions with Christina Hussell in the Digital Skills team at the university can feasibly contribute to ensuring a sustained relationship with Wikimedia during the residency and post the residency.
  • 4 proposals for sessions to the OER17 Conference on 5-6 April 2017 were approved (1 presentation on the Edinburgh Residency, 1 lightning talk on Content Translation, 1 lightning talk on the WikiCite project and 1 workshop on Gamifying Wikimedia).
  • Continuing discussions with Edinburgh University Student Association about an International Women's Day event in March 2017.
  • Arranged with Edinburgh University Translation Society (student society) to hold editathon with their 100+ members in January or March 2017.
  • Arranged with Gavin Willshaw (digital curator) to hold #1lib1ref event on Friday January 20th 2017.
  • Arranged with Professor Gordon Masterton, Jenny Lauder & Billy Rosendale to hold further Engineering 150 editathons throughout the year.
  • Arranged with Agomoni Ganguli Mitra to hold Gender, Global Health & Justice editathon on February 21st 2017.
  • Wrote 4 short Christmas-themed blog articles for entry on the Open Advent Calendar (2 x Histropedia, 1 x Wikisource and 1 x Wikipedia)

Digitisation[edit]

Collections identified for potential future upload:

  • The proposal for CC-BY images to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons will be submitted to library staff this week.
  • The Wikisource community have confirmed that selected digitised PhD theses from the university would be appropriate to uplaod to Wikisource and be within the project scope. The university has been digitising its collection of PhD theses for the last few months and is now at a stage where it can consider uploading a test case to Wikisource: a medical thesis by British physician & geologist Thomas James Jehu pending approval. In addition, the Wikisource community have intimated that a number of the Open Books could also be imported, pending approval.

Projects/events in development[edit]

  • Arranged with Gill Hamilton at National Library of Scotland and Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator at the University, to take part in the global #1Lib1Ref campaign to celebrate Wikipedia's 16th birthday.
  • Continued planning arrangements with Gill Hamilton at the National Library of Scotland for early discussions on a Moving Image Archive editathon at new Kelvinhall site in Spring 2017 and for future NLS & University of Edinburgh collaborations relating to supporting the new Gaelic Wikimedian in Residence.
  • Continuing discussions with Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh), Lothian Health Service Archives, Surgeons' Hall Museum, colleagues in Information Services and the College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine; and now the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons (Glasgow) regarding the History of Medicine editathon on 23 & 24 February.
  • Continuing planning arrangements with Blythe Day of the Student Association at Edinburgh University ways in which Wikimedia can support diversity at the university through a proposed event during Gather Festival in March 2017.
  • Have begun discussions with Johanna Holtan, James Smith and Stephen Kaye to hold an African Alumni & Swahili editathon in March 2017.
  • Continued planning arrangements for a Wikidata Workshop with Navino Evans at the the Edu Wiki Conference at Middlesex University on 20 February 2016
  • Discussed Wikipedia editathon on Gender, Global Health & Justice for Festival of Creative Learning on 21st February 2016.
  • Four sessions for the OER17 conference in London on 5th & 6th April have been confirmed but need tweaked for the 23rd of January 2017.
  • 'World of Wikipedia' event for Jo Spiller's Future Teacher Series planned for March 6th 2016.
  • Continued email discussions with Lorna Campbell to discuss a 'Languages of Britain Wiki Conference' at end of June 2016/start of July 2016. Venues are being sourced at the moment with the 'Digital Day of Ideas' being used as a format model.
