Portal:Rhode Island[edit]

I just finished re-doing this, using Portal:Connecticut as a model of sorts, and I'd like to get it featured in the future. Comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks. –Juliancolton | Talk 03:52, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment I like the colour scheme, and the photographs are very attractive and well-chosen. Couple of suggestions:
  1. The main article (Rhode Island) has no link at all to the complete article. Also the Selected articles ought to have a link in the blurb, not just on Read more
    Will work on that. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    Done this as well. –Juliancolton | Talk 05:11, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. From our experience with Portal:Opera, In the news sections can be laborious to maintain and can go stale, e.g. "news" from back in February. We eliminated ours and replaced the space with an expanded In this month section.
Well, I have In the news set to be automatically imported from Wikinews via a bit, so it shouldn't be too hard to maintain. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's ok then. Wikinews totally ignores opera (apart from when Pavarotti died), so we had to rely on manual additions with referencing. Voceditenore (talk) 05:28, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. I'm wondering if Things you can do should go a little lower down on the page, with the more content-oriented sections higher up, e.g. Did you know?, Quotes related to Rhode Island, etc.
    Done. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Photo suggestions. I notice that several of your Selected articles lack photos. Here are some suggestions of PD images for them:
  1. Portal:Rhode Island/Selected article/4- File:Lightning Bolt.jpg
  2. Portal:Rhode Island/Selected article/5 - File:FortAdamsNewportRI.jpg
  3. Portal:Rhode Island/Selected article/8 - File:20031113 Station Night Club Memorial.jpg
  4. Portal:Rhode Island/Selected article/19 - maybe this File:Salt Pond in Chrlestown.JPG or does Charlestown have more than one salt pond?
Hmm, not sure whether or not that's the right pond. I'm heading to Rhode Island on vacation next week, so I'll take some pictures while I'm there. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    Added a photo. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:15, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Portal:Rhode Island/Selected article/20 - File:DunkinDonutsCenter2.jpg

- Voceditenore (talk) 13:14, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added the rest. Nice finds; thanks! –Juliancolton | Talk 04:51, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comments:

  1. Perhaps you should add Rhode Island's flag and seal to the intro box.
Done using the random selection component, so it displays the flag, the state seal, and the map. –Juliancolton | Talk 02:09, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Not sure why you used the seal as the diagram for Portal:Rhode Island/Selected article/13
It would also be good to have alt text explaining what the images depict in the selected article blurbs. You can do that by flling in the caption= parameter in the layout Voceditenore (talk) 07:16, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Can you add more DYK sets?
I've exhausted all the Rhode Island-related articles that have been actual DYKs. Will try to look for more. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:56, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Too little selected quotes, a better idea is replace it with selected biographies.
Why not have both? What's considered the minimum number of quotes needed? It would be fairly easy to increase the number currently there, although it would better if each quote were accompanied by a PD image of the author/speaker. Voceditenore (talk) 07:08, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
