I do a lot of work with people in the entertainment field and find that being able to access older news stories is a great way to obtain information that many times isn't found in books. In the past few years I have predominately written articles on local history via the NRHP Wikiproject as well as Illinois political biographies. For many of them newspaper archives make the difference between a good article and a stub. One example where I have used a newspaper archive in the past is John Olaf Todahl. That article was completely impossible to write without the newspaper obituaries. Other articles that used online newspapers: Seattle Cartoonists' Club and Alice Harriman.     Hey @John M Baker: I am not following how you would use these newspapers as a source. If you are searching back in their database for "earliest" uses wouldn't that constitue WP:OR? Shouldn't we be using secondary or tertiary sources like the OED or Google Ngrams for that kind of work. Could I get a little more detail on how access would be useful for you?
    While it's always best to use high-quality secondary sources such as the OED, there are not always current reliable sources to address word and phrase origins. Newspaper sources can be secondary sources in their own right, when better sources are not available, as they often provide information on word and phrase origins. In addition, early uses in newspapers and other media are acceptable as primary sources, although they must be used without interpretation. It would not, for example, be good practice to say "the earliest known use of X was in The New York Times on Y date," unless this fact is derived from a reliable source. Finally, and most importantly, it is valuable to be able to refer to the original sources that are cited by reliable sources. A famous example in the field is an article from 1913, "In Praise of 'Jazz,' a Futurist Word Which Has Just Joined the Language." In writing about jazz (word), naturally I wanted to be able to view and refer to that article (which happily had been reproduced elsewhere), although conclusions about it could be drawn only from secondary sources.     @Sadads: I am one of the leading editors/ mentors/ content advisers at ml.wikipedia and other Indic projects. (A review of my recent direct contributions may not reflect the effectiveness of my actual contributions as I am spending more time in mentoring and training students and new editors from local communities on focused content with authentic citations). As you may know, we are always short of genuine back references when it comes to detailed information on historic events as they unfolded. I have seen that newspapers, whether they are regional, national or international, have been of tremendous value and use when preparing to write / edit/ refine a serious Wikipedia article on history, especially that of countries of South Asia, South Africa and elsewhere.     Hi @HazelAB:, yes, one example is the uncertain story of the w:frr:Mary Celeste with three North Frisian sailors on board. A look into original newspapers of that time should help to get a clearer view on the 'real' story. Another example concerning a North Frisian sailor ist the mutiny on the ship Braganza in 1838 (no Wikipedia article yet).     For example the 1929 Hebron massacre and its qualification by media as a pogrom. Actually, in the process of resolving the dispute on this subject I have completely rewritten the French article on the subject and I am contemplating to propose is as a BA. I am also interested in researching for articles I write on English topics such as Montagu Bronwlow Parker. I contribute also on early American films. I am a member of the Silent Films task force and I am preparing an improvement of the article on the 1916 Sherlock Holmes film, based on the copy which has been found by the Cinémathèque française. I contribute to wiki in many different fields, many times I need to have access to the archive of newspapers, which are usually closed and need a subscription (which I do not have). For example, recently I was working on the article of an Iranian MP who lived 100 years ago, and I had heard that the newspaper "Times" had reported on his activities back then, but I did not have access to its archive. One was listed in the San Francisco Bay Area portal for a while as a "did you know" which I think exemplifies my research interest. It is about a innovative business manager named Isaac Friedlander who used new technology to make California into a major wheat producer. This is relatively unknown, and technologically related. I lean towards those "stories" that have a large ratio of practical impact compared to what people know commonly. I would find access to these newspapers very useful to find more info about local listed buildings with WP:NRHP, prominent figures of the Gilded Age and the Antebellum and Postbellum South (like this), and the early history of California (I am working on early Jews and historic synagogues in LA for example, so access to the Los Angeles Herald would be extremely useful). Thus most articles I write are on women who are Native Americans, Latino, black, LGBT, etc. I have done major rewrite on 3 very large articles Recognition of same-sex unions in Mexico, Indian termination policy, Feminism in Mexico. Because women and especially minorities are not covered in a lot of printed histories, newspapers are a critical source of information.     No. I really have no idea what article I'm going to be working on next until I start doing it. I tend to choose articles by hitting "random article" until I find something I think I can improve. I realize that's not a very organized way of approaching article editing and creations, but that's what I do. Articles I've worked on in the past where such access might have been helpful include Thomas M. Blackstock, Thomas M. and Bridget Blackstock House, Hayden Schilling, Clallam County Courthouse, and Vernon Jones. I'm also planning to get back to a partially-completed overhaul and expansion of an article on Alrutheus Ambush Taylor when I can get more information on him. My editing interests are eclectic, but often include historical subjects from the 1600s through the 1900s. As an example of where access would be useful, I recently worked on articles relating to Hog Island (New York), and had to rely on tertiary sources, such as a recent newspaper account that itself referenced an inaccessible old newspaper account of a hurricane in the late 1800s. Having direct access to that source would make this sort of editing much easier, and allow direct reference to the original source instead of indirect referencing. It would also improve article depth and possibly accuracy. Older records are often less precise than those made today, and it is beneficial to have easy access to multiple contemporaneous sources. T see how I have done this, check out Stanley Steingut. I was half-way through Irwin Steingut and had to quit because my NYTimes account was not sufficient to finalize the project. (I had been using a database put together by an amateur, but it's search feature was insufficient and I could not spend the time going through thousands of hits the database produced.) If I had access to newspapers.com I oculd finish that, and begin on Brooklyn political boss John H. McCooey, Tammany Hall boss Jimmy Walker, NY Governor Hugh Carey and numerous others. You can see that my intent was to take stub or start class articles and flesh them out fully. Nespapers.com, I think, would be the perfect tool for that. Absent a good newspaper database, I have migrated away from such projects and am currently doing 20th century legal figures (which also could use the newspaper database). See, e.g. Archibald Cox and Donald Turner. For that project I desperately need another resource (HeinOnine) but the account coordinate there has not visited the application site since October. Finktron (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I would find access to Newspapers.com beneficial because a number of the ace pilot Wiki pages are referenced primarily with links to acepilots.com and other secondary online sources, rather than contemporary newspapers, original military documents, personal biographical accounts, etc. I have been an editor for about four months now. Since that time have created two pages, Albert O. Vorse, Jr. and Cecil E. Harris, the former of which has multiple references to Newspapers.com even though I currently only have access to OCR scans of these documents that I find incidentally via Google. Greater access to the full columns and their verbiage—along with accompanying pictures—would go a long way in improving not only the referencing of existing/future articles, but would make research much smoother in the process. US Navy aces, even those with 15 or more credited kills, rarely have Wiki pages. My goal for the next couple months is to create at least 3 more B-grade articles for e.g. Nooy, Fleming and others who have rendered significant wartime as well as post-war contributions. Through my local library, I have access to Newsbank, which includes the Lexington Herald-Leader, but not The Courier-Journal. Also, Newsbank only goes back to about 1983. Newspapers.com would fill in these two gaping holes. For example, I am currently trying to create articles for Kentucky Supreme Court justices, and many served prior to the time period covered by Newsbank.     Sorry I should have added it. I contribute to wiki in many different fields, many times I need to have access to the archive of newspapers, which are usually closed and need a subscription (which I do not have). For example, recently I was working on the article of an Iranian MP who lived 100 years ago, and I had heard that the newspaper "Times" had reported on his activities back then, but I did not have access to its archive. Doug has newspapers.com access and has been finding things for me, but it'd be much easier if I could use it myself. We are working towards articles on John Plankinton House, a mansion refurbished in the 1860s, William Plankinton House, which John built for his son in the 1870s and was being discussed for preservation in the 1960s, William Plankinton (the name of John's son and his grandson, who inherited John's vast estate), and John Plankinton Statue, which is still on display and was recently restored. The access to historical materials from the Sydney Morning Herald (Australian newspaper) would also be useful for some of the materials relating to the Ensemble Theatre and its history and productions, which goes back into the 1950s. The article on Hayes Gordon needs expansion, and Sandra Bates AM and Mark Kilmurry (the Theatre's only two other artistic directors in its nearly-60 year history) are both notable and their biographies are missing. I have been a Wikipedian for a long time, have made over 12000 edits (all manual), 4630 in the last 12 months, and maintain an over-50%-of-edits-in-article-space-record. My DYK credits pages lists 49 article creations / expansions, successful nominations of 10 other articles, and other nominations in progress. I have written an FA (rhodocene) for which I have a Four Award (having taken it from a new article through DYK, GA, and FA), and developed the biography of Hans Freeman from a 604 byte unreferenced BLP stub of 66 words to a 25 843 byte GA of 1 391 words with 28 references. Hopefully this is enough to show my commitment to WP content development, my skill, and the benefit from my being able to access newspapers.com content. I've helped get Kojo Aidoo to GA status (as well as a current GA nomination for T. T. Toliver. Newspaper access would help with the expansion of players from the Arena Football League massively as they usually weren't covered as much in college as players in the NFL.     @Sadads: I just recently ran an edit-a-thon on Frederick County History and I'd like to try to do a Wikipedia in Residency with my local historical society (who I have a good relationship with and helped me advertise the edit-a-thon even). As far as a list of articles I'd like to work on goes, there is a great list over at the page for the edit-a-thon. We barely scratched the surface of those articles (we worked on maybe 10 of them?). In particular the Everedy Bottle Capper Company, Frederick Seamless Hosiery Company, and the OxFibre Brush Company are likely notable and without articles. Further Frederick, Maryland also has a list of stub Historical sites, which I would love to do some work on. A recent article I worked on, Frederick Brewing Company made extensive use of newspaper references from the Baltimore Sun and the Frederick News Post (though in this case, articles on this topic were easy enough to find online). The article on Creagerstown, Maryland could use a little love, as could Lewistown, Maryland. In particular in the case of Lewistown, Maryland I would love to find more information about General John F. Reynolds' march through the town.     I got the email but tried getting onto my account using my email address you mailed me with but forgot my password for Newspapers.com.     @Dough4872: You don't actually have a Newspapers.com account. Getting an account is a two-step process. First you sign up at the Newspapers.com site, then you fill in the Google form that is linked to in the email I sent you. You don't seem to have filled in the form, or if you have it didn't get recorded, so I suggest you fill it in again.     @Neuralia: This resource contains mostly US local newspapers, and as the scope info above states it is "particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 3⁄4 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States".
