Nuclear policy of the United States

Hello Yoninah,

Thank you for your feedback on the DYK process on my article of the Nuclear policy of the United States, as you will see, the suggested changed have been made. Also the other reviewer, my mentor and I have fixed multiple things on the page including copy, hook, lead, and of course reference formatting. At this point my article should meet all the criteria for the DYK process. When you get a moment please review the article to check and if you feel it passes the DYK criteria, then please pass the article. If you feel it is still lacking, let me know on my talk page and I will try to make the changes in the same day. Shalom Yoninah, Kayz911 (talk) 23:54, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

{{orphan}} tags do not disqualify DYK nominations (Re: DYK for Wilhelmine Reichard)

While there have been multiple attempts to implement rules disqualifying DYK nominations due to presence of an {{orphan}} tag to an article, such attempts have been consistently rejected. This is because such a rule would be built upon three unprovable/faulty reasons:

  1. The problem is primarily with the "orphan"ed article (as the "needed" links would never exist in the "orphan"ed article this is clearly false).
  2. Appropriate articles exist to allow for incoming links.
  3. Addition of new links is possible without violation of core Wikipedia policies such as Wikipedia:Neutral point of view#Due and undue weight.

The article has also been deorphaned. --Allen3 talk 13:10, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

DYK reviews

Hey Yoninah. Thanks for the note. I was actually just trying to be helpful. In the case of List of La Sierra University Presidents, it was an old nom that needed to be approved ASAP to keep clearing the backload. In the case of Aman Sveti Stefan, you had suggested an alt hook which, as I understand DYK policy, you couldn't have approved yourself since you wrote it. You therefore needed another reviewer to chime in. Best, 4meter4 (talk) 15:29, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Was it an accident in reformatting the list of books that you removed the references to the reviews? They're the third party references that show notability for those people, like Hrafn, and NW, who don't believe that WP:PROF is an appropriate guideline. And surely they're relevant information. If you don't like them in the style I wrote them, change them to ordinary references, but I think indented lists such as the way I did it is much clearer. DGG ( talk ) 14:05, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

The hook ref for James G. Rickards is in an audio file, but it is also transcribed (in part) here. Should I include this in the article? It's a blog post; I normally try to avoid them as sources. This is a common misconception. Remember, this is a wiki, and sentences may be moved, added to, and so on. Just few days ago I reviewed a DYK and asked the nom for an ref for the hook inside a para. The para first and last sentence had the same ref, and you'd think the middle, where the hook was from, would have the same one, right? But it was instead another source the nom used, but forgot to add to that para. This is just one of many cases which prove that it is better safe than sorry, and referencing each sentence is the right thing to do. For UZZ, imagine - what if somebody were to add new content to the middle of that para, with a reference - would you then assume that the beginning of that para is referenced with the new, middle-of-the para ref? Or split it into two, thus leaving the first one unreferenced? I hope you see now why each sentence has to have its own reference. Could you restore the refs you removed? Thank you, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 00:49, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Thx for your message. Three years ago, we used to link everything in sight. Now practice has changed significantly. In particular, please note the WP:PILLAR that says "WP is not a dictionary". Readers are expected to be able to read English. "Composer" should not be linked unless there's a particular reason for doing so. "England" is a common country name, and the readers do speak English. If you want to visit that article, you can type it into the search box. Having "England" linked in half a million articles is rather pointless, don't you think? And where the town or city comes first, is it normal to link it, but not the less focused, larger geographical name after it. The guideline discourages (1) bunched-up links, (2) less focused links, and (3) links to well-known words unless they are of particular utility to readers. Can you point me to who is "calling for" composer to be linked in leads? Tony (talk) 09:13, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Ref tags: once you start reffing just about every sentence and half-sentence, the ref tags become irritating to readers without adding much in the way of verifiability. Often you can get away with retroactive ref tags (end of a paragraph, if it's not unclear, and especially if the claims being referenced are not contentious). "Child took his first composition lessons at the age of 12 with Bernard Barrell.[3] He began attending Keele University in Staffordshire, England, but transferred to Reed College of Portland, Oregon in 1973 in a junior-year exchange program;[3]". The first section goes 3, 3, 4, 3, 3, 1, 3, 1, 1, 3, 3 .... I would object to this as an editor. If you're getting your info from two sources in this para, I'd put [1][3] at the end of it and be done. Again, can you point me to instances at GA where reviewers are asking for this? Link in 'Mahane Yehuda'

Regarding the link in the 'Mahane Yehuda' page: Kordova, Shoshana (2005-02-28). "Playing the Market / Mahaneh Yehuda". Haaretz. Retrieved 2008-02-13.

I live in Israel. When I go to the link, I am redirected to: http://www.haaretz.com/, HaAretz's homepage. Furthermore, when I do a search for Kordova's article, "Playing the Market" on the HaAretz site, I get nothing. I even sifted through all of Kordova's articles one by one and still nothing.

When you click on the link, do you get the article? And if so, are you redirected to a different address? If you are redirected, than perhaps the actual redirect address should be used for the 'Mahane Yehuda' page citation so it will work for everybody. Atefrat (talk) 04:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Deletion "Crusade" lol...

Dear Yoninah, I thank you for taking out time to guide me, I am relatively inexperienced and can use guidance from experienced users like yourself. As for my AFD nomination, I am only nominating pages for deletion that have been marked as needed for quite some time in same cases over 3 years, and after and even go a google news, scholar, books, and free images search on them to see if I can add something. It's only after I've done this I tag AFD on them for example look at this, I just marked it as needing sources and I'll it as that for a year or so Yeshiva_Rabbi_Chaim_Berlin, on the other hand have you read this Guru_Gobind_Singh_Sikh_Center doesn't read like an Encyclopedia, and no references has been marked as such for over 4 years, and I did a reference search on it and the results were presented when I marked it with an afd Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Guru_Gobind_Singh_Sikh_Center.

It's not only Orthodox Judaism article I've marked for deletion, look at my very first contribution, it was a Sikh gurdwara, also I read so much about Hachnasat_Sefer_Torah in all the articles that you think I just deleted them without thinking. Speaking of which can we have this page forward to the Sefer_Torah#Dedicating_a_Torah_Scroll instead of deleting it?

Back to the point, please let me know what should I do, instead of AFDing, what I see as, bad articles. As for the Judaism articles I will drop them on your talk page and seek your guidance before I AFD them. What about the non-judaism article what do you suppose I do about them. I think you for guiding me, I am new and I know I've already started on the bad foot with several people, but I just wanna help. The Terminator p t c 12:41, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Nonetheless I will drop them on your talk page before doing anything. The Terminator p t c 14:16, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
