my first edit[edit]

I just made my first edit. It all seems confusing. I changed an odd image credit in the article about the artist James Tissot. The Museum owns the whole set of watercolors done by Tissot about the "Life of Christ". Who are the people writing and editing? What do they get out of this? Where is the order?

I've now made another edit of the Underground Railway article and the Runaway Slaves article

using an image of the Brooklyn Museum Eastman Johnson's A Ride for Liberty -- The Fugitive Slaves. I'm not sure still of proper etiquette. How much ownership do editors feel over articles?

Then the third edit I've made is to this page. Is it ok to rewrite your own page?

Today the site wasn't working again(something about servers?). It's easier now to know what to do. The big problem is the understanding of what is appropriate do, how much to change and how much to include. We are trying to be respectful and consistent. The hardest part is to keep track of the edits we're doing on a spreadsheet so a record is kept.

Tissot[edit]

Hi, The Brooklyn has a pretty nice collection, and I was impressed by Crucifixion, seen from the Cross (James Tissot). Do you know, or anyone there knows, if there are any other views from above paintings like this? By the way, I think by now you know the image formats, so that should be settled. You can just copy from other pages and that may be the easiest way. Cheers. History2007 (talk)

Jesus : Harold Copping[edit]

I found an image misattributed to James Tissot on the page about 'Jesus'. I could see it wasn't by Tissot and could read the signature, "Harold Copping". I'd never heard of him and looked him up and found out that he had been a prolific artist of the Victorian Era. In trying to correct the mistake, I needed to create a page about him. So then:

Editing Jesus[edit]

There is a lock icon at the top of the 'Jesus' page. This is, unsurprisingly, one of the most visited pages on WikiPedia, so I can completely understand the necessity for keeping it free of vandalism and crazy additions. An editor, 'Grafen', has some sort of stewardship over the page and the editBot in place twice reverted my addition of a small portrait of Jesus by Tissot. In exploration of this I looked at the history of the page which is sort of hysterical. It's a long listing of various editors making changes and then the editBots reverting them. The wiki phrase is 'protecting Jesus' alternating with 'unprotecting Jesus'... protecting Jesus/unprotecting Jesus. It is a headscratcher figuring out how to best place the images done by James Tissot of the Life of Christ into the many pages within WikiPedia. So many different articles and so many different formats looking at the atomized parts of the bible and the life of Jesus. So what is the 'take-a-way'? 1.) Jesus is still creating a tremendous amount of debate. 2.) That most folks are ok, but that the very few that aren't, screw up everything way out of proportion. 3.) A good way to deal with the world is to see the humor everpresent in anything having to do with human beings.

While I was checking on some edits I noticed that one of the images had been taken off. Fellow User(Volunteer) History2007 noted that it's getting to be too tissot-pedia. Yes, I agreed that there are a lot of images that Tissot created that are relevant to the Life of Christ. I've place some 30 of the 350 images. So how to best make use of this strange asset that the Museum owns and keep in line with the wiki-protocols. Well, the Museum also has a set of Hiroshige.

Here is the note from one other user ... Me: I am the tissot-er. I am focusing on some image assets. We have the whole set of Tissot's and they continue to be a popular request. I don't actually know much about the Life of Jesus but have been learning. I've tried to respect the general approach of wiki and don't want to offend. Which scenes of the Life of Christ might best be illustrated by Tissot? It is such a huge area but it's sort of atomized in it's structure. Advice? Suggestions?    Well I would generally avoid the traditional scenes listed at Life of Christ, but individual miracles are often little illustrated. It would be helpful if you or someone could label the image files with the gospel references for at least the less-familiar scenes. Disciple (Christianity) could use maybe this, Joseph of Arimathaea this, Ordination this, and so on. Of course in an article on the cycle, for which you must have access to excellent materials, you could use a whole lot. Johnbod (talk) 19:43, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

batch uploading of images[edit]

I need to upload a lot of images to Wikimedia Commons. There is a FAQ with links to the site for "Commonist"(odd to see a hammer and sickle again!). How open is the systems with connections to Wiki? What firewalls or safety precautions are there? Privacy is gone right? what about security? How ok is enough?

moving ahead with placements.[edit]

Now, I am (we are) placing images from a collection of images from India of Vishnu. He's all blue, powerful and everpresent. And he has ten 'avatars' that are his incarnations into the realm of our being. So many stories and so many characters. At least with Tissot and Jesus there was only one set of myths to work out.

Summer into Fall[edit]

The next phase moves away from Vishnu to other items in the Museums collection. Hiroshige lead to a complete investigation of scenes of Japan but not a lot of good placements; Kobayashi Bridge the exception. Now further into the collection leads to Hudson River School painters. Aren't Frederick Church and George Bellows really exceptional? Good stuff!

11.11.11[edit]

Now it's fall. I've been enjoying some easy time with the american artists - Charles DeMuth, Wm Merrit Chase, and John LaFarge... I did have a funny (strange) wiki glitch thing happen: I was making some placements to various pages when I thought I'd look to see what I'd done on the User:Contributions page. But the last changes I'd made didn't appear...? I remember having signed in but then signed in again and made a change to the page of John LaFarge when I noticed that that change did appear on the contributions page. Knowing that I'd made an edit on the page about George Luks, I checked that and saw that the changes were listed as having been done by user:204.118.34.130 . This 'user' doesn't seem to have a talk page or bio... I'm thinking that it's more of a WikiGlitch than anything. The list of contributions goes back to 2005. Is this a person here.(?) puzzling? No?

And here's another odd thing about this. It wasn't the first time that this happened, one of the TissotBold text's I'd edited in May (Adoration of the Shepards) was also listed under this strange username.

I am unsure why this article wouldn't be listed as a stub and then whoever was interested in moving forward could amend the article? In order to find a good place for a nice image, I wrote an article(bio) of Anna S. Fisher. Just like in High School, it's the footnotes and citations that stymie me. No wonder I went to artschool. I'm not at all aware of what a BLP PROD is ... prod? production? proposed deletion? BLP biography of living person? well, she isn't alive. Hmmm
