Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Suitcase records. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Suitcase Records, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Funnyfarmofdoom (talk to me) 03:16, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

HI,
I am the owner of Suitcase Records. I didn't update anything that is a conflict, I simply corrected the details of 2 suppliers that were listed on our page. Is this an issue?
regards,
Neil Suitcase records (talk) 03:27, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, as you mentioned being the owner of the Suitcase Records, it constitutes a conflict of interest. So, you are required to disclose this on the talk page of the relevant article as well as on your user page. Due to the conflict of interest, direct edits to the page are not permitted. If you have any changes to propose, please make suggestions on the talk page and ensure you use the COI edit request template. Additionally, it's important to note that Wikipedia accounts are intended for individuals, not companies. You can request a username change here. – DreamRimmer (talk) 07:13, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Neil. I don't see any problem with your editing, and the conflict of interest guideline was, of course, created to deal with editors where there is a problem. However, I advise you to err on the side of caution, and go through the process of requesting edits related to your business rather than simply making the changes directly, for two reasons. Firstly, doing so will avoid any risk of doubt, if sooner or later doing something which to you seems uncontroversial, but in which others see a problem. Secondly, many administrators treat the conflict of interest guideline much more strictly than (in my opinion) they need to, more like a strict rule than a guideline, and it will be best to avoid any risk of being seen as editing in conflict with that guideline. Your username[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Suitcase records", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". However, you are permitted to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you individually (not your role), such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, service, or website, regardless of your username. Please also read our paid editing policy and our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please request a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, choosing a username that complies with our username policy. Alternatively, you can just create a new account and use that for editing. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. November 2023[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Your account has been blocked from editing because your username gives the impression that the account represents a group, club, organization, company, or website. Your username is the principal reason for the block. You are welcome to continue editing after you have chosen a new username that complies with Wikipedia's username policy, which is summarized here.

You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and be aware that promotional editing is not acceptable, regardless of the username that you choose. Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid or compensated in any way, you must disclose who is paying you to edit here.

Please take a moment to either create a new account, or request a username change of your current account here. The new username that you choose must represent you as an individual person, and it must comply with Wikipedia's username policy.
  • To create a new account with a different username, simply log out of this account and then click here to make a new one.
  • If you prefer to change the username on this account, you may do so by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page (this page): {{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Please note that the new username you choose cannot already be taken or in use by another account. You can go here to search and see if the username you'd like to choose is available. If the search returns that no global account with that username exists, that means it is available to be taken.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87", but not "SEO Manager at XYZ Company".

Appeals: If your username does not represent a group, organization, website, or other entity described above, and if you believe that this block was incorrect or made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the following text to the bottom of your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

  • I have renamed your account from "Suitcase records" to "Tookie2022", as you requested on the global rename request interface. Since using an acceptable username was stated by the unblocking administrator to be sufficient for you to resume editing I shall unblock the account. JBW (talk) 20:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
