Suggestion for changing the name of the article

Hi Tim, I wanted to add "company info box" to Union Labor Life Insurance Company and realized that the article is about Ullico, but have information mostly about Union Labor Life Insurance Company. It might be confusing, so I suggest either changing the name of the article to main company name "Ullico" or perhaps creating two separate articles and keeping the one about Union Labor Life Insurance Company as subsidairy of Ullico. Please let me know what your thoughts before I make any changes. Klapouchy (talk) 20:36, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Since the company changed its name formally to ULLICO, and then made Union Labor Life a subsidiary, I think the name of the article should be changed to Ullico (lower caps, except for the first letter. That's how the company refers to itself now.) This has the advantage of allowing future contributors to add new sections on new subsidiaries, so the article can be updated and grow. If, at some future date, there is enough information on Ullico and its subsidiaries to warrant a separate article for Union Labor Life, we can change the redirect and move the text over again. Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Memorial Bridge approaches

I'm wondering if you have any maps from about 1928 showing the planned approaches. I'm trying to figure out exactly what was added to the state highway system in 1928 (pp. 23-24). In particular, had the exact route of the Lee (now Arlington) Boulevard been set, or was it going to run closer to the cemetery? (There were further additions in 1930 (p. 20) and 1938 (p. 20), which almost perfectly match the mileage of current US 50 and SR 237, but I'm unable to figure out exactly what was added when.) Also, any idea where "Porter Woods'" was? Thanks. --NE2 19:57, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Boy, Porter Woods -- I've never heard of that before. I wish I had maps of the area prior to 1928, but I don't. The only thing I can think of is whether there isn't a topographical map from the US Geological Survey from the 1920s. I was hoping for something from about 1928 showing what the plans were at that time (like File:Army Quartermaster Corps proposed Arlington Memorial Bridge and approaches - 1926.jpg but updated with the Lee Boulevard and Straight-to-the-Bridge Route). I have found some pre-1928 maps, but proposed roads aren't on them: 1900, 1915, as well as 1938. --NE2 03:03, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

I am not sure if there is a proposed road map. A "before" map, that shows roads before any new roads were built, is maybe the best we can hope for. I don't have access to the Virginia archives, nor National Capital Parks and Planning Commission files. I found my map because I've done a lot of articles about Arlington National Cemetery, and lucked out in coming across that one map. But I will check around; someone might know something over at Greater Greater Washington blog or something. - Tim1965 (talk) 03:16, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Japanese deportation

Ok, I couldn't see those pages. But there are sources, any chance you could find and add them? The figure seems correct and matches what our article on the subject says. Dougweller (talk) 15:55, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I will try to find citations for that (although noting the size of the Japanese-American internment is not essential on the "Deportation" page). I see there's no actual citations there on Japanese-American internment, either. That's kind of a major omission. If "various sources" say 110,000 to 120,000 internees, then those sources should be cited on the Japanese-American Internment page. I ran into the same problem on the page USS Maine Mast Memorial, where various authoritative sources gave wildly differing numbers of crew, dead, and interments. I don't have an elegant solution to the problem; footnoting the discrepancies seemed to gloss over the problem in that article. - Tim1965 (talk) 16:34, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I see you wrote Holmead's Burying Ground. I came across that subject a few years ago while researching my place in Dupont. My friend that lives at 20th and S doesn't believe he lives on a former cemetery site. I'll have to tell him to check out the article to prove otherwise. (just in time for Halloween!) DYK

I was going to nominate my new article at DYK, but uh, things have changed since my last visit in 2010. The process seems more complicated and there's a lot of older entries. Do you bother with it anymore? APK whisper in my ear 15:47, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Sadly, I don't bother with it any more. I didn't mind the added burden of having to review someone else's DYK. But about 2011, some nitpickers got hold of the DYK process; now, the entire article must be completely and fully cited, no redlinks, etc. I guess Wikipedia was "embarrassed" by some DYKs which had a cited claim, but which made outlandish, stupid, patently wrong claims elsewhere in the article which weren't cited. Thus, the added burdens. Essentially, an article can't be a DYK unless it's practically B-class. And the reviewers go way, way, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond the DYK rules, imposing their own judgment calls on language, style, citation templates, and more. I said "Frak it" and haven't used the process since. Occasionally, someone else submits one of my new articles for DYK. But I gave up on it. - Tim1965 (talk) 16:10, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, it is. The massive backlog is indicative of the extreme problems DYK now has. It's become rule-bound (I think there are close to 30 rules a DYK submission has to meet now), and those who judge whether a contributor has met the rules often (it seems) are not contributors themselves but merely rule-enforcers. They derive power and satisfaction from enforcing rules, rather than seeing the encyclopedia grow. I'm not the only one to abandon DYK. Most heavy contributors have. Those who tend to post to DYK now, it seems, tend to be newbies who don't know any better, or those contributors really committed to their article and who want it to get attention (often because it's the first step to pushing an article to GA and then FA class). - Tim1965 (talk) 16:51, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Watergate

Tim: I made the changes yesterday to the Watergate wiki. I changed the reference from condominiums to cooperative apartments. I live in the Watergate, and I know that all of the residential apartments are cooperative apartments and not condominiums. If you search the text of the wiki you will see several references to cooperative apartments. - Not a big deal, but just trying to correct the wording.
