Another country outline moved to article space!

Topic outline of Zimbabwe is now in article space. It still needs images and some bluelinking, and is undoubtedly missing some relevant links.

Please take a look at it. You will no doubt spot things you can easily fix that I overlooked.

Your feedback is needed - what do you think of this...

What was your initial impression when you saw the above image?

Please look at it carefully. What is wrong with it?

In what other ways can it be improved?

I look forward to your reply (on my talk page, please).

Search/replaces

I've found a major problem on a set of mainstream geography articles, and have added it to your list...

So it's time to tackle User:Thehelpfulone/Find-replace requests.

Woohoo!

The Transhumanist 01:46, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Transhumanist lists: automatic find/replace

Please tell me how the automatic find/replace you have completed for Demographics of Tajikistan and Demographics of Uzbekistan can applied by me to other countries. I am not familiar with the technique you have used. Thank you. --Zlerman (talk) 01:18, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:AWB. It's an auto-pageloader and semi-automatic editor. The Transhumanist 18:25, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the cleanup that was required in Demographics of Tajikistan and Demographics of Uzbekistan after the automatic find/replace. --Zlerman (talk) 04:15, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

THO, the demographics pages need another pass. Some of the headings had data on the same lines, rendering the wikiheading codes you inserted to display as ASCII text. You need to use regex in AWB to add a carriage return (in regex, /n = new line). Good luck. The Transhumanist 18:23, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, would that be on the Find/Replace Option or ticking "Regex"? The Helpful One Review 18:31, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. I've never used regex. When you figure it out, you can teach me!  :) The Transhumanist 18:34, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes: tick Regex. Then you type in regular expressions where you normally would type in find/replaces. See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Regular expression and WP:REGEX. The Transhumanist 18:41, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The <br> codes also still need to be replaced with carriage returns. See the instructions at User:The Transhumanist/List of country demographics pages. (I think you skipped the testing step).  :) The Transhumanist 18:52, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

i can haz co-nom? User:Juliancolton/FacesJuliancolton Tropical Cyclone 14:37, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to co-nom too, but too many co-noms can be frowned upon, so I added my "beat the nom" support instead. Good luck THO!
Good luck, I left a msg for you on Pedro's talk page... but I also wanted to remind you to close your Editor Review. It is generally frowned upon to have an ER going while under RfA.---Balloonman PoppaBalloon 19:09, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Demographics of Tuvalu

I notice that you have twice run a search and replace on Demographics of Tuvalu in an attempt to create subheadings, but the result is broken markup. I would have thought you would have noticed that the result was poor when you viewed the page after your edit. You do check your work, don't you? Please fix it. I also saw a similar problem with your edit at Niue, but on that article even if your edit had not been broken, it would have been undesirable to have so many subheadings in a country-level article.-gadfium 20:28, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Subheadings are fine, and they support redirects pointed at them. The Transhumanist 21:29, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regex

Hmm, I don't think that AWB has been working properly, I think it worked for Demographics_of_the_Northern_Mariana_Islands but not as well for things like: Demographics_of_the_Isle_of_Man? Is that what you meant by regex? The Helpful One 20:37, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"regex" is short for "regular expression". When you click the regex box, AWB interprets search/replaces as regular expressions (boolean logic formulas). I haven't started using them yet, as I didn't realize how powerful they are. I'll start just as soon as I get a new laptop. The Transhumanist 20:45, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regex can do things that the basic search/replace feature can't, like search for blank lines, and add blank lines in. You can also search for multi-line entries, which is an extremely powerful ability.

Look at the <br> codes. Those need to be removed, but if you replace them with nothing, then the lines will run together. Therefore, they need to be replaced with new lines. That will create some double blank lines, so you'll have to make another pass to change the double blank lines with single blank lines - AWB does that automatically if you have its general fixes box checked.

I see more comments are coming in on the typos. What have I gotten you into (you must have missed my suggestion to test first before "running amok").  :)

Good luck!

  • Demographics of the Northern Mariana Islands - removed the "br" codes.  Done
  • Demographics of the Isle of Man - I don't know if AWB's regex feature supports wildcards - I can't make heads or tails of the instructions - but if it does, you can specify "===" followed by anything, followed by new line, and replace it with the same thing but with a new line (/n) after the ===. That's what you need regex for. Have fun!  :)

The Transhumanist 21:04, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CIA World Factbook demographic statistics

I'm cleaning 'em up again, using this heading for the statistics section.

The Transhumanist 01:51, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:Rjwilmsi

Rjwilmsi implied he knows AWB/regex very good. So feel free to bombard him with questions on how to set up regex search/replaces.  :) The Transhumanist 03:03, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I think I figured out how to approach this

I'm in the process of standardizing the headings, to the following heading:

CIA World Factbook demographic statistics

AWB can be configured to skip pages that don't have that, which should help keep the run focused.

Each data type has an identifier (surrounded by ''' usually), so by keying off of those specific terms, the formatting around those can be cleaned up pretty easily. Most of the data to be changed is in the same (incorrect) format. And most of the rest of it is in another (equally incorrect) format.

Also, pages in the correct format can be identified pretty easily and skipped by specifying strings that are found only in that format.

Does that make sense?

The Transhumanist 03:03, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added the above heading to all the country demographics articles up through Demographics of Malawi, replacing whatever other weird heading was there (they varied a lot).

I also added lead sections where there were none using: {{subst:user:The Transhumanist/sandbox23|}}, placing the country's name after the pipe.

  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.

  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.

Machu Picchu

Hiya, just as a second opinion from another admin, I wouldn't call the actions of 65.9.99.42 (talk · contribs) vandalism (see WP:VANDAL#NOT). I do agree that the block was appropriate since they were edit-warring and not responding to talkpage messages, but I didn't see anything from the IP that looked like a deliberate attempt to compromise the encyclopedia. Ditto with the protection notice at Machu Picchu. Protection was appropriate, but it might be better to change the reason to edit-warring, rather than for vandalism. Would you have any objection to my changing the message? --Elonka 18:52, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changed, and thanks.  :) BTW, I see that you're a new admin, welcome.  :) I've been working on an "advice for new admins" page, at User:Elonka/Advice. PopSinger623

He immediately restored his bogus article. Why did you unprotect his talk page?—Kww(talk) 15:15, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But that was exactly the point. This editor is on indefinite block because he creates this same bogus article, over and over and over and over. He has used up 4 unblock requests, days of conversations with me and other editors, and is now inappropriately using his talk page. Please blank his talk page, protect it, and lets be done with this.—Kww(talk) 15:21, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scuse me for butting in, I've been watching this situation for a few days. Please take a quick look at PopSinger's talk page as of this revision. PopSinger was given a real article to work on, but did not complete the task. See especially the comments at the bottom of the page, where attempts to explain to him what's going on appeared to fall on deaf ears. PopSinger then blanked the page, restored his bogus articles, and continued to edit them. He was told that any hope of unblocking was contingent on him not doing this. You seem to be inviting him to continue as per previous discussions about letting him edit an article, but that did not refer to this article. I don't think there is much point in trying to help this person further. Since he is acting like a youngster (so I presume he is one), and claims his albums are to be released more than a year in the future, I doubt they exist at all, and he is just using Wikipedia for playing. Also note that what brought attention to him in the first place, was a separate incident where he and/or his cousin were blanking multiple articles for fun. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 16:05, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the link, but I have already blanked and protected the talk page now. :) The Helpful One 16:22, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit protect on Sarah Palin article

I'd strongly recommend that you extend the period of full protection on the Sarah Palin article. The content dispute that prompted you to lock the article (at least, the one I think you were referring to -- the dispute about the rape kits) has not been resolved nor has it died down. Please note, in my opinion the protected version is the wrong version, since the lockdown occurred immediately after repeated deletions by a single user of a compromise revision fashioned by numerous editors – but I think it should remain locked anyway, while this and other debates play out.
