Warning on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music articles[edit]

You put an "unencyclopedic" warning on the BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 2 articles for a schedule formatting. I basically agree with your point of view. But the warning should not linger forever as it takes away from an otherwise aesthetic and nice article. I don't have the time or internet access to re-format it myself. Bests. --- 17:21, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

It also affects the BBC Radio Five Live article as well. I can't do anything until the weekend when I will have time to edit the articles, ideally hopefully someone else who has more knowledge of the radio stations can edit and improve the articles, if not I will try and do it all this weekend, probably Saturday or Sunday afternoon (UK time). The same problem occured on the BBC Asian Network article but that one has been resolved. Sonic 18:21, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gareth. I fixed up the BBC 6 Music article as per the discussion. Bests. --- Bob. 16:36, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

I fixed BBC Radio 2 also. --- Bob. 15:35, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot, your work is much appreciated. Sonic 18:13, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quite Welcome. Bests ever. --- Bob Wikiklrsc 18:41, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Straw poll in Freeview article[edit]

Hi. You didn't add a closing date for the ITV/ITV1 poll, so I just wanted to ask if you're happy with the opinion as it is, or do you want the poll to continue? The main opinion is still split, but the editors who were most concerned with the dispute have said they will "tolerate" H2g2bob's compromise. RobWill80 20:33, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think H2g2bob's compromise seems the best way to go with this straw poll, at least we seem to have some consensus with the general view of the people. As far as the closing date goes, straw polls on Wikipedia generally don't have closing dates, it was just trying to get a straight cut answer between whether the article entry should say ITV, ITV1 or a compromise. There is more on the Wikipedia:Straw polls if you want a look yourself. I'll post most of this in the Freeview talk page too. --Sonic 20:50, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had read the guidelines before contacting you... they just seem a little vague in regards of how or when to act on the consensus of the poll. Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. I'll see about changing the DTT article to reflect the decision. RobWill80 21:43, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject jazz[edit]

Hello! I am trying to get a new WikiProject for jazz off the ground, and saw that you have an interest in smooth jazz. If you'd like to help out with the project, feel free to sign up in the jazz proposal section at Wikipedia:WikiProject/List of proposed projects. If you have any questions let me know. Thanks! --cholmes75 (chit chat) 16:34, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have signed up to the project. All the best. --tgheretford (talk) 18:06, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Great! One more and I can promote it to full project status. If you know anyone else who might want to join, please let them know. --cholmes75 (chit chat) 18:33, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK, will do. --tgheretford (talk) 19:08, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories for discussion[edit]

Hi, I added them to this discussion: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion#Category:Television channels to Category:Television stations. I just wanted consistency between all the subcategories of Category:Television stations (as all begin with "Television stations" except a few which begin with "Television channels"). After proposing the rename though, someone pointed out that "Television stations" is American English; I was unware of that. --musicpvm 07:43, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

don't get snarky[edit]

Why have you taken it upon yourself to set yourself up as the arbiter of objectivity?

The nature of a wiki is that it is a collaborative undertaking, and it gets changed.

Your not liking a modification is no justification for getting all pompous and threatening.

Please stop behaving as if you own the wikipedia or particular entries.

And mind you don't fall off your high horse -- it's a long way down. --—Preceding unsigned comment added by Dundee nark (talkcontribs)

Right, where do I start, first of all your edits promote a number of forum members on the Digital Spy website, which is a violation of Wikipedia:Vanity guidelines and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. It is also worth noting that your edits were also reverted by a number of your edits were reverted for the same reasons by other users. And be careful, regarding your comments above, you may want to read this: Wikipedia:No personal attacks. --tgheretford (talk) 14:42, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not going to get into a protracted debate with you over the disputed passage, and how it may be similar or different from the preceding passage. If you don't like it, flag it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:POV_check --—Preceding unsigned comment added by Dundee nark (talkcontribs)

Sadly I have had to dispute the section, we had a discussion about the inclusion of major forum members on Digital Spy discussion page where we decided that the people concerned did not warrant inclusion in Wikipedia because they are not noteworthy enough to be included in Wikipedia. If you believe these forum members should be included in the article, please discuss it on the Digital Spy discussion page. Please see these pages for more information: Wikipedia:Importance and Wikipedia:Notability (people) --tgheretford (talk) 14:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh, what a shame, better luck next time, okay! Actually, I supported you to win the award, your user page is just amazing! Good one! good one! Imoeng 02:48, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I did change the design a bit and fixed a number of design errors after the nomination (and I finally got to grips with the double column tables), but hopefully it should look better than before. --tgheretford (talk) 10:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey. I tried to add a Hallam Fm Logo but it didnt link correctly. You then reverted the changes back. Thanks. I cant seem to link the image. It is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hallamfm.jpg but it wont let me have it in the box on the Hallam FM page. Hope you can help. Coolmark18 20:42, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Seems strange, adding it into the infobox on that page is just bringing up the text of the image name, not the image as it is supposed to (which usually should mean an image doesn't exist, hence the revert, but that clearly isn't the case here). I will try and see if I can sort the problem out. --tgheretford (talk) 21:05, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. When you add a logo to a page, you need to surround the image with [[ and ]] to make the image appear, as opposed to just text.
For example:
Hope this helps --tgheretford (talk) 21:11, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Glad the problem was fixed. -Coolmark18

Thanks to tghe-retford[edit]

Just to say thank you to tghe-retford (Gareth). Although I can, and have, amended Wikipedia pages, I can't do the page merging thing so thank you for merging the pages in the Top Up/Anytime debate for that is appreciated. It's useful to have an encyclopedia that people can contribute to and you can often get useful and interesting details that you wouldn't get in something like a standard encyclopedia like MS Encarta.

I'm interested in the future of TV and radio, technology and science and over the next few years it'll be interesting to see what broadcasting systems, companies and formats win out. Like this winter, HD-DVD and Blu Ray will be fighting it out for supremacy. I also take part in the DS Forums here in England. It's good to be involved in discussions about how things will turn out though some of the debates can get a bit heated at times. I don't criticise anyone else's postings and I've no time for flaming.

Anyway, thanks again for doing that and I really hope things work out for you.

With regards,

Tim (as in TWF 11:49, 10 September 2006 (UTC))

Thank you for your comments, and no problem regarding the merge. As far as merging pages go, it is quite easy once you know how, you just copy and paste the contents from one page to another and them make the redundant page a redirect. Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages can tell you more than I could!
I also joined Wikipedia for the same reason you did, as far as vandalism goes, yes it is annoying, but that is where the Counter-Vandalism Unit comes in! Flaming and criticism doesn't help when it comes to conflicts, which I have had to learn the hard way! --tgheretford (talk) 18:57, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the link to the moving and merging pages, tghe-retford - Gareth. Much appreciated. I've downloaded and read it and it looks do-able but then again I can still fluff up standard page edits (doh!). And there's also some other stuff I would like to have at the outset but it's been a bit difficult for me to get the right words and so here goes now… I think you're really brave to openly say that you're having to deal with social issues. I don't know if this is in anyway going to help but I also know what it is to have to deal with health issues but from a different perspective. I now unexpectedly and without any warning have to deal with heart problems decades earlier than would normally be expected and this often leaves me with a great deal of physical pain for which I have to take powerful painkillers. I now end up using the internet a bite more as there are still bad days when it is just not possible for me to get out of the house.

One of the worst and most annoying aspects of things I have found is that because no one can tell from the outside appearance about the health issues, people, colleagues, government agencies, potential employers, etc can have unrealistic expectations of what you can do, what you're up for, etc and that things might have to be taken slowly. They just do not understand what things are like as they've not experienced them.

I have found it very helpful to have a supportive GP (a great help with the Department for Work & Pensions) and if anyone or organisation tries to give me grief I have access to the support from the local Citizens Advice Bureau. Having that support is useful because I can put my health first and not be forced into doing something I don't want to do or to go at too fast a pace. I am slowly starting to rebuild things by initially trying to do a little bit of voluntary work - a few hours a week - and it gives me something to do, it gets me out and gives me social contact though I still have to decline to do some stuff as sometimes I'm not up to it. I might also join my local expert patient/support groups run by my health authority.

I have also found out the hard way, as I've always tried to be self-reliant, that it sometimes would be better to accept the offers of help and support that are out there and I'm going to do that from now on. I also want to check out local ICT and other college courses because I'm not going to be doing anything physical anytime soon. In the long term, my local council and some other employers offer working schemes that allow people to just start work one day a week so that's a potential future option and I'm now hopeful that things will turn out better for me because of the options that are available.

Two years ago a friend developed a diseased lower intestine and that left her in the most intense internal pain and she had to give up the outdoor job she loved. She had to undergo two major operations to remove those diseased sections of intestine resulting in prolonged stays in hospital. This has meant lifestyle changes and she now has to use one of those colostomy bag things though she fortunately doesn't have any pain any more. She's starting to get things together, rebuild her life and be involved in things again. One of the surprising things that has helped her rehabilitation is taking her neighbour's dog (a gentle lurcher) out for walks. It's given her exercise and having a dog has proved to be an ice-breaker with other people as people pet the dog and talk to her.

I guess what I really wanted to say all along is that life has also thrown loads of trash at other people so we know what it's like to have to deal with stuff, to hang on in there because it is possible to rebuild a life after things have happened, that there is hope that things can get better and that different potential options of help and opportunities are available.

Thanks again for providing the page merging links.

Best wishes, Tim
