Convention churches

I shall indeed be brushing up on Wikipedia as the days wear on, but be warned that I am prepared to defend the edits I have made. I don't wish to turn the article into an apologia for the church, but a good part of the article is hearsay or biased or nonsense.

"The church is sometimes confused with the Cooneyites" - By who? Adding "in the literature" certainly helps. By your own admission you're going back 25 years.

If the statement must stand I would - a) take it out of the opening paragraph - the subject SHOULD be included in the article, no question on that, and Cooney is referenced in the history.

Perhaps a section comparing the theology of the church to other denominations with which it is sometimes confused? Groups with common historical roots include the Faith Mission, the Plymouth Brethren, the Cooneyites. (Are there others emanating from Ireland in the late 19th, early 20th?)

Well, there is WP:RUS which is currently used for transliterating names from Russian into English... Mírnyj átam as you put, is not a very commonly used transliteration system, and somewhat incorrect: there should be an atom not atam. I don't have any problem with the reliability of the media source, which contains excerpts from the JOFA paper which could legitimately added to the article. The paper itself, if it were published, could be cited and its content excerpted. But it doesn't seem to me that the mere presentation of an unpublished paper in a conference -- with nothing about the content, just the presentation of a paper and a claim the paper is a first -- is appropriate encyclopedia content for this article. (I also disbelieve the claim of first publication. For example, Tamar Ross wrote about these topics in her 2004 book Expanding the Palace of Torah, although doubtless not in as much detail). I want to be helpful to these people and if they have value to add and can reliably source it, I want to them to get their content in and they're welcome to cite any acceptable publication. However, I feel that simply adding a paragraph about the existence and virtues of an unpublished paper without meaningfully describing what it says on the article topic is not appropriate encyclopedia content and is possibly WP:SOAP. Well, despite your rational explanations, I see that you got yourself attacked and accused for racism as well. One week? Not necessary. But don't give me veiled threats. I will cite the following examples:

1. When WP:NPOV butts heads with WP:CON, NPOV wins every time. If POV-pushers end up "disenfranchised" in the process, I, for one, consider that to be an excellent precedent. Tomer^talk 17:43, 8 April 2007 (UTC) Your response to Agha Nader [1] regarding Iranian editors at The 300 (film).
2. The remark is based upon nationality, but reading through the article's talkpage, I find numerous accusations of POV, including against you. If you're complaining because you feel Miskin's remarks constitute a violation of WP:NPA, that's one thing—I don't see a violation of NPA, although I do see some failure to WP:AGF, and I would have to agree that his lumping all Iranian together as biased wrt this article, simply because of their nationality, is theoretically somewhat disingenuous. Nothing I'm seeing on the article's talkpage, however, warrants classification here as an "incident". You asked a leading question, and got the answer you hoped to. Congratulations. You asked to be insulted and got what you wanted. How is that anyone's problem but your own? 3. Assumption of bias based on nationality does not constitute "racism". There is no more an "Iranian race" than there is a "Jewish race", and if Jewish editors were insisting that Judaism never had animal sacrifices, or that Jews had never forcibly converted people, or that Jewish history consists exclusively of happy shiny people, yes, definitely, it would be alright to disenfranchise them from editing a "Jewish" related article—clearly they are incapable of doing so either rationally or within the confines of WP:NPOV. The remark is not racist, it simply indicates a prejudice...and, again, the remark never would have been made, had you not elicited it. You can't hit someone and then cry "foul!" when they hit back. I like it! I have a few comments:

1. The area you have Jews dispersed in China is too large, I think. They should be concentrated in Kaifeng, along the Silk Road, and in a few of the coastal cities. There were not, to my knowledge, any Jews in the broad areas of countryside you have shaded in, esp. after the massacres at the end of the Tang dynasty.
2. Ditto Ethiopia. Jews were probably limited to the area around Gondar province.
3. Ditto Timbuktu. Should be much smaller area.
4. Other than the Yemenites and the Habbani Jews in Hadramaut, I am not aware that there were any Jews in the Arabian Peninsula.
5. The Jews had been expelled from England in 1290, and not re-admitted until the 1650s. While a few lapsed conversos may have arrived in England from the Spanish persecutions in the late 1490s and 1500's, that would be after the time of this map.
6. I think you have the Mountain Jews extending too far north.
7. There were some Italian Jews in the Crimea. See Ghisolfi.
8. I don't think there were significant Jewish populations in Scandinavia until the 1700s.
9. The map is missing the Baleric islands, Aegean islands and Malta, all of which had Jewish communities.
10. The Jewish community in Sardinia was Sephardic, I think.
11. Armenia had a distinctive Jewish community. Right now they appear as a mix of Romaniote, Kurdish and Iraqi Jews.

Bob Dylan

I have been laboring to get Dylan removed from List of converts to Christianity.

The current debate is going on here.

This is an example of my argument, my most recent post:

C.Logan -- The list as presently configured is in violation of WP:NOT#SOAPBOX. You have been asked to change it. Many people on the Bob Dylan Talk page have asked that Bob Dylan's name be removed from this list. Why hasn't that change been made? Why hasn't Bob Dylan been removed from the list? Your assertion that the list should contain any person who has ever converted, even if they are no longer Christian, is an illogical contrivance that does not serve normal encyclopedic purposes and is advocacy for Christianity. Christianity and Judaism happen to be two different religions. Christianity is a religion which asserts that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. Judaism asserts that Jesus Christ is not the Messiah. Bob Dylan happens to be a Jew. Bob Dylan's identity implies that Jesus Christ is not the Messiah. You are conflating mutually exclusive assertions in the definition that you have contrived for this list, making it into a grotesquery. It is not as if you are unaware that Bob Dylan's status has changed. One can accept that a change in religious status that you are unaware of can mistakenly creep into a list or remain on a list because you are unaware of it. But it is incumbent on an editor to remove a name if they are clearly aware that the person is not in fact a Christian, but in fact in this case is a Jew. This list should logically be a list not only of those who have ever converted but of those who are still Christians. It is promotion of Christianity to include the prominent Jew, Dylan on this list. Any other names that come to light as no longer being Christian should also be removed. The list is not a billboard for advertising Christianity. Please understand that I mean Christians no harm. Religion in EU

Thanks for your comments. What I would like to do is replace the present comments on genocide etc. with a more general reference to ant-semitism, with links to more appropriate articles, where any missing detais could be added. For the time being, I would concentrate in the EU article on some Jewish population figures. There is a lot of scope for more information on Judaism in the European Union, but I don't think I'm very qualified to add it. If no-one else does, I'll try to do some research and come back to it later. --Boson 22:10, 3 May 2007 (UTC).

Ultra-orthodox

Greenfeld is referred to as Ultra-orthodox on Meretz's website here. It is far more common than Haredi, and is used as the description by all the major news sources, including the BBC and CNN, and is also commonly used in the English-language Israeli media; Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post. Thanks. Would you please let me know what you think about the relation between scholarship and politics? In particular about the following quote from a review of the book "Muslim Authors on Jews and Judaism" published in the Journal of Semitic Studies(Oxford University Press):

However, as long as the continuous Arab-Israeli conflict has not found a solution, historians will search through the past in order to find new evidence to prove the antiquity of the tension between the two communities and to illuminate its causes. A "new" category that is not new.

Hi Tomer, Shavua Tov: I have a question. I have just come across Category:Jewish diaspora, which someone claimed was a "new" category, but unbeknownst to him when he created it as "new" in July 2006 [4], the category was actually voted for deletion in October 2005, see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 October 16#Category:Jewish diaspora. Hi Tomer, please take a look at the way the article about Rabbi Milton Balkany has been written by David Spart (talk · contribs) (who tends to write in a provocative way about Lubavitch). WHY?

You deleted a real virus called the Goon Virus. There was no other Wikipedia pages on the Goon Virus meaning it was not interfering with ANY searches. It was a real event even if you don't believe it. It hurt NO ONE. It made the creators happy to have proof of such a life changing event to them. You had no reason for your removal of that page. User:Barak Kaiba

Hi Tomer, I came across this "user" page at User:Barak Kaiba and I cannot make heads or tails of it. Barak Kaiba (talk · contribs)'s don't go beyond writing up this piece of of self-glorification. In User:Barak Kaiba#Early Life he says: "Barak Kaiba was born Barak Zimri HaLevy on 1 Aprilst, 1992 in Tel Aviv, Israel to two Orthodox Jewish parents named Avner and Elisheva HaLevy." So I think this is just a violation of WP:NOT#MYSPACE, WP:HOAX and the former WP:VANITY. It's just some kid trying to get around Wikipedia's (by now labyrinthine) rules (that just keep on growing) and the page needs needs some admin attention to be deleted. Thanks for your care. Gracenotes

Hi. I'm sufficiently disgusted at the way Gracenotes' adminship request is going that I no longer wish to comment further on that page, however I could use a little clarification here. You refer to User:Dabljuh and then appear to use Gracenotes' interaction with this user as partial grounds for opposition. Problem is, I can't find any such interaction. Gracenotes had fewer than 60 edits at the time of Dablijuh's final block, and does not appear to have communicated with this user, or edited any pages which this user edited. Please tell me you are not confusing this user with User:Grace Note – they are not the same user, and indeed they are very different; your use of the abbreviation "GN" gives me a worrying suspicion that you may have done so – Gurch 13:52, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

That would have made the discarding of your vote as irrelevant all the more easier, certainly. I notice you still haven't contested my claim that you mistook Gracenotes for another user, which makes no sense; if you did in fact oppose his adminship you would have changed your rationale to reflect the actual reason, whereas if you did not oppose it you would surely have at least stricken your comment and possibly left a comment in another section.

I'm less concerned with "advocacy" than preventing such gross mistreatment as a candidate being granted or refused adminship based on the actions of a completely different user. I removed a support vote from someone who voted twice and would happily have commented on the votes of supporters who had mistaken Gracenotes for someone else had I spotted any; while those who provide little or no comment could well have done this there are none that I could be sure of.

I don't see my rationale as trolling but rather as perfectly logical; Gracenotes had no contact with the user you brought up as rationale for your opposition and wasn't even active then; Grace Note was – Gurch 16:05, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Wausau, Florida

You reverted some edits on the page for this town, edits that had themselves been a reversion of edits from an anonymous editor. The anonymous editor had changed the town's population to 23,398 from just 398. Someone reverted this, and you then switched it back to 23,398. I'm not familiar with the town, but am nearly 100% sure that the 398 version is correct: the town looks to be that size on Google Earth, the 398 number is confirmed elsewhere, and the 23,398 number is greater than the total number of people who live in the county. JewishEncyclopedia.com claims the copyright on the images they have posted from the 1901-1906. However, those images are in the public domain and are ineligible for copyright. Burundi was properly colored. Thats the blob to the south but Rwanda was not. I fixed that.

Tonga and Samoa are not visible on the blank version of the map (as far as I can see) so I cannot color them. Because it is at the middle of nowhere (Pacific) I am unable to pinpoint its location. If you can provide me which ones I am to color, I can do it.

Actually, if you look at a map of the Pacific, you'll see that Samoa and Tonga are the only things visible east of Fiji (at least on the rhs of the map.  :-) Tomer^talk 18:09, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

The list includes Palestine, which is not only not a member of the UN, it is not (and never has been) a country. Therefore, the West Bank, presently marked in green on the map, probably should not be. The West Bank is currently considered under international law to be de jure a territory not part of any state. The United Nations Security Council,[1] the United Nations General Assembly,[2] the International Court of Justice,[3] and the International Committee of the Red Cross[4] refer to it as occupied by Israel.

I'm not sure what you're referring to by "[n]ot sure if I want to do that." We have an official source that calls it a member of an organization...but that's Palestine, which is a group of organizations, not a country. Regardless, even if the outcome of status talks assigns the West Bank (occupied 1948-1967 by Jordan, occupied 1967-2007ff by Israel) to a new country called "Palestine", the West Bank is not presently Palestine, it is presently the West Bank of the Jordan River, and therefore should not be colored. Hi, I see you moved the article for the town in Devon to Tavistock, Devon and created a disambig page at [[Tavistock]]. You will be pleased to know that I have now spent 8 hours fixing almost all the wikilinks (about 200 or so) which your move rendered incorrect. One of them should have pointed to the Tavistock in Canada, a handful to the former Parliamentary constituency (which you had omited from the disambig page), and a couple to the (likewise omitted by you) Tavistock Clinic. May I suggest that next time you move a page in this way you read Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links and then consider 1) is the move entirely necessary, and 2) maybe you could fix some of the misdirected links resulting from your actions. I was just giving you some equally unneeded advice. I haven't had time to do much editing on Wikipedia of late, as you can plainly see, since you've obviously been going through my contributions. If you're unhappy that it took you so long to, to paraphrase you, fix the mess I made, perhaps you don't understand how wikipedia works. You have made plenty of edits after your unnecessary move of Tavistock, not one of which was concerned with correcting the links which you made invalid. If you had bothered to mention the London disambiguation page in your first message above, I would not have felt it necessary to reply to you in the way I did. If Chambers is the only dictionary you can find that defines "kidnap" as a noun, I think characterizing my saying it isn't a noun barely qualifies as a grammatical error...if anything, it strengthens my position. Regardless, I doubt even Chambers bothers to try to declare "abduction" a verb (although it wouldn't surprise me terribly if they did), so "abduction" should be less questionable as a word choice.

As for my edits since Tavistock, you'll note that, with the exception of my dubiously entertaining discussion with you, I have not spent a great deal of time engaged in editing. My edits have, instead, with the exception of the TfD discussion, been itty bitty little things I've caught in passing. As for the way you replied, your reply was not nearly so aggravating as your initial message was. Anyways. Are you done with Tavistock? Or do you want some help finishing up? I have about half an hour I could spend more productively IRL, but if you want I can help you with that or with some other project of your choosing. Regards, Tomer^talk 16:38, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

• Kidnap as a noun. Chambers Dictionary is the one I had to hand, OED has it as a noun too. Maybe this is a difference between British and American usages. Kidnap is commonly used as a noun in British usage. I am insufficiently familiar with American usage or dictionaries to make proper comparison. Chambers does not list abduction as a verb. Maybe you should acquire a copy.

  I've heard kidnap used as a noun by Brits, but always assumed it was substandard usage. Perhaps it really is just a BrE/AmE difference, I don't know. Tomer^talk 17:15, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

• I took a quick look at your edit history to see if you had been active since the Tavistock move, and saw that you had, but had not fixed any of the misdirected links. This did irritate me - I do feel that when an editor makes a move he or she should check "what links here" and at least make a start on correcting wikilinks.

  I was in the midst of a project that had something to do with the Tavistock in Ontario, which is the only reason I went to the article...I wanted to know where it was so I could figure out what timezone they were in. I didn't have time to do much else, and as I found out yesterday, everything I did for the client concerned ultimately turned out to be a colossal waste of time, since I was missing two critical pieces of information. Suckysuckysucky. I concur that efforts should be made to straighten out links when pages are moved, and if you dig deeply enough into my edit history, you'll find that I've expended a great deal of effort in this exercise in the past. It's been a long time, but I am pretty sure I made the map in question from a different source website than the one you cited. Though naturally I do not recall which one, it was linked from the article at that time and had the countries exactly as I colored them on the map. I checked three times to be sure I had it right. The claim (which I have challenged) is that because Jews come from the Middle East and seldom intermarry with "native" Europeans, we can speak of "European Jews" but not say that Jews are a European ethnic group. This sounds like a matter of semantics; I personally do not have such a strong investment in the view, but I do know some hold the view and for me it is a matter of NPOV to acknowledge it. However, in the context of other debates on this page and other articles, I think what is at stake is a highly racialized notion of ethnicity that has been used to justify viewing Jews as permanent outsiders in Europe - a view that in light of the twentieth century cannot be innocent. Tribute to "the Marine" I would like to pay a small tribute in this edition to Tony "the Marine". Editing since May 24, 2004, he has been one of our project's most active editors and has become one of Wikipedia's most recognized writers. He has authored over 400 articles, including 4 Featured Articles, 1 Featured List, 10 Good Articles, and 28 DYKs. His name has appeared in newspapers and magazines and has been mentioned by politicians and artists. He has brought Puerto Rico's history and its people to the web. He has shown the world that Puerto Ricans have done much more than just be gangsters and drug dealers. He has shown the world that we have contributed to history and the world just as much as any other group of people. On September 29, 2007, Tony announced that we would not be writing for Wikipedia anymore. We, the members of this project, are sad that he will not be able to continue to spread the word of Hispanics' contributions here on the web, but I, for one, feel honored that he has entrusted us with the duty of continuing and improving his excellent work. Hello Tomer. You are right, my tone with this user was not good. The background is that I had several run-ins with User:Hkelkar. For a long time I dealt with him with far more patience than was managed by any other editor. He accused me more than once of antisemitism, then apologised, then when he was accused of the violations of policy that eventually got him banned, he begged me to support him, but when I saw the diffs I didn't feel I could. Following that, he has returned regularly in the form of sockpuppets and IPs, wikistalking me and some other editors. On this occasion the irony is that I was going to go directly to putting in a Wikiquette advice request but it said that you should have already warned the user. I tried to do that and did so rather impatiently. I know that I have a tendency to engage with people who turn out to be trolls but this time I have probably gone too far the other way. You're a really experienced user, I know, and if you had time to cast an eye on the Dalit Voice and V.T. Rajshekar pages, I would very much appreciate it. Itsmejudith 13:17, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Further to the above and to your edits to the relevant pages, I wondered if you had an opinion about whether the balance of material is right between the Dalit Voice and the V.T. Rajshekar pages and whether there is too much overlap. I've found this very difficult to get right when edits that I consider to enhance NPOV and to be well within WP guidelines have been immediately reverted with edit summaries accusing POV. Hi Tomer, Shavua Tov. Could you do your admin magic and move the Swiss Jews (fix the redirect) to its true name as History of the Jews in Switzerland to fit in with all the other articles in Category:Jewish history by country. One or two people had some discussion about this a while back (see Talk:Swiss Jews#Requested move) but it is ridiculous to claim that there is "consensus" if 99% of all articles are like this, and the only exception is for true/unique Jewish ethnicities, such as Georgian Jews for example. RE:Shalom

Just to clarify a bit. 1. The word offensive was perhaps over the top but Luzzatto was a prominent Bible scholar (if a bit outdated) and I was unhappy with the way you pushed him off w/o source or counterargument. 2. I did not add the Shalom etymology but it is certainly within the realm of possibility. If the word Yiru Shalem by MalkiTsedex is referring to Shalim (as EJ) thinks it is very small step to the modern word shalom from WP:Ugaritic "The vocabulary is amazingly close to biblical Hebrew — many Ugaritic words are letter-for-letter the same as biblical Hebrew" definitely not ridiculous. Pagan was my inexact translation. I take it you don't read hebrew. He actually compares him to the Roman Jupiter who is above all other gods (i.e. henotheism). Interesting that you found only "some" of his arguments against Maimoniddes invalid (Zvi Chajes has whole work Tiferes Moshe to counteract Shadal on Rambam) and all of his arguments against Ibn Ezra invalid (Shadal later backed down on this position). Shadal's distinction between Atticism and Judaism was mainly a response to the Enlightenment and the Reform movement (the Reformers used Maimonides reasons for mitzvos (to counteract idolatry) as an excuse to call for the abrogation of the commandments.) I don't believe that he really felt that way about Rambam or Ibn Ezra. In any event, agree with you that this particular etymology needed better sourcing and wording. Notability

Hi Tomer. I was interested in your edit summary: "if it's not notable, it shouldn't be on WP. Saying it's notable in the article itself is an expression of POV.)" I don't care so much about the edit you may, but I don't think it's a POV problem. At most, it's an expression of Wikipedia's assessment that the subject is notable, but that's not considered a "POV" in our lingo. Perhaps it's just bad writing, but I often do describe the nature of the notability in the lead of an article. See WP:LEAD -- "The lead should be capable of standing alone as a concise overview of the article, establishing context, summarizing the most important points, explaining why the subject is interesting or notable, and briefly describing its notable controversies, if there are any." emphasis added, Thanks muchly. Massacre of Uman

Hi, IZAK brought this page to my attention and asked me to contact you. The article is written from a slanted point of view, mentions Jews almost in passing, and gives no references. Aside from the poor writing, it describes a scenario with which I am unfamiliar from other history sources. According to the Jewish History Page[8], Gonta, the Polish commander, enlisted the services of the Jews and then betrayed them. Here is the summary of what happened:

1768 June 18, HAIDAMAK MASSACRES (Ukraine)

Reached Uman. The peasant serfs and Cossacks rioted much in the same vein as Chemielnicki one hundred and twenty years earlier. At Uman, the Poles and Jews defended the city together under the Polish commander, Ivan Gonta. The next day, convinced by Zheleznyak the Polish revolutionary that only the Jews would be attacked, Gonta allowed the fortified city to be entered without a fight. Approximately 8000 Jews were killed, many of them trying to defend themselves near the synagogue. As soon as the Jews were all massacred, the Haidamaks (the paramilitary bands) began to kill the Poles. Although the Haidamacks began in the 1730's, the main rioting was during the years 1734, 1750 and 1768. It is estimated that during these years 20,000 Jews were killed. The Haidamaks became part of the Ukrainian national movement and are celebrated in folklore and literature.

He also created the Syrian Jews article which, while it does have important things to say about the uniqueness of Syrian Jews per se, creates the question how to reconcile this with the main History of the Jews in Syria article. Media copyright questions

I'm not sure I follow you. The image was untagged when OrphanBot visited it. According to the page history, you uploaded it to the English Wikipedia at 8:05, untagged even after the subsequent edit [9], OrphanBot tagged it at 9:09, you made a series of edits ending at 9:31 when it ended up finally tagged -- the current version -- and you posted at WP:MCQ at 9:35.

The bots do not check other Wikis you may link to. There's rarely a point, since different ones have different rules, and a tag in one place (in general) might not be valid in another. TCC (talk) (contribs) 20:56, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I have blocked you for 24 hours for these edits to a closed ArbCom case. Unsubstantiated, repeated, and very serious personal attacks against another editor are simply not acceptable. If there is evidence to support your claims, then you need to produce it. FYI I left the following note for you on the "Bukharan/Bukharian" page. Well it is certainly nice to see that the traditional Jewish traits of argumentativeness and stubborness transcend Jewish ethnic identities. But I must say that, in reviewing the "talk", it would appear that Tomer is substantially more argumentative and stubborn than the rest. To assert that a certain historical spelling of an English word ("Bukharan") is preferable to another, more recent spelling ("Bukharian"), and to base the assertion on Google hits and historical usage, is literally linguistic ludditism. By Tomer's logic, he would be justified in blocking all users who change "his" to "his/her"; all users who change "negro" to "African American," and, I suppose, all users who change "thou" to "you." After all, there are 1,880,000,000 Google hits for 'his -"his/her"', 72,000,000 for 'his/her', and zero for 'his/her -his' (duh). There are 80,000,000 hits for 'negro -"african american"' and only 40,000,000 hits for '"african american" -negro'. The thou/you thing is purely "original research" (which is often the term used by the WikiPolice for "common sense.") For good measure, you might try to compare "Ms." to "Mrs.", "Gay cheerful" to "Gay homosexual", or "race" to "ethnic background." Historical words are deprecated all the time. One of the most common catalysts is the preference of the people described, and the deference of others to their wishes. I would suggest that Bukharian Jews care much more than anyone else what they are called. Semi protecting the article

Hi Tomer

I just wrote a similar message on User:Slofstra's talk page... I know you watch the Christian Conventions article so I want to know what you think too. As you know it is constantly being used as a place for people to air grievances -- possibly justified but that's not what WP is for... It's being edited by newer editors without any regard to WP:NPOV or WP:RELY (I don't know that privately-run websites can really be deemed reliable resources). Do you know if it's possible to semi-protect the article? I think the article is generally in a near-complete, stable state so it should be reverted to the last edit by Slofstra and then any non-minor changes be discussed on the talk page first.

Pyramid scheme

I've removed the links you placed to Amway and Scientology on the Pyramid sceme article. Placement of these links violates WP:BLP, which requires that derogatory information (especially criminal allegations, which is what calling an organization a "pyramid scheme" amounts to) be very well-sourced. However, I took the liberty of moving it to Mizrahi Hebrew, as it is a discussion that goes far wider than just Syrian Jews. I also had some queries on the content, which I have put on the Mizrahi Hebrew talk page. Briefly, I believe that a /b/ pronunciation reflects Arabic influence, a /v/ pronunciation reflects Ladino influence, while a community influenced by modern Spanish (such as the Spanish and Portuguese Jews, or South Americans) will hover uncertainly between /b/ and /β/. --Sir Myles na Gopaleen (the da) (talk) 10:27, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Etymology of récipé

You say: "Etymologists disagree with your remarks, here and here, for example." Your first reference is to the "Online Etymology Dictionary", a website put together by a journalist and amateur historian with, as far as his bio indicates, no particular expertise or publication record in etymology or historical linguistics, so I don't think his Web site qualifies as a reliable source. Your second reference is just a copy of the first, so not an independent source at all. The OED, which by any standard is a reliable source though not, of course, perfect, says:

L. recipe take (2nd sing. imp. of recipere to RECEIVE), used by physicians (abbreviated R, Rx) to head prescriptions, and hence applied to these and similar formulae. So F. récipé (15th c.).

Perhaps he misinterpreted that "So F. récipé" to mean that English borrowed it from French, not directly from Latin; but all this means is that French also borrowed it from Latin, but wrote it as récipé. None of the quotations in the OED include accents, and one of the strengths of the OED is precisely in documenting variant spellings. --Macrakis (talk) 04:40, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Red-tailed Hawk

Trouble is, with a widespread species, just adding foreign names, let alone local variations, soon leads to a disproportionate amount of the article being taking up with just alternative names. Cosmopolitan species like Osprey must have dozens of names, and even more restricted species like this are well-known enough to have names in most foreign languages.

Unless a species is endemic to a country, there is rarely a reason why any particular name is more notable than all the others. In this case, even the subspecies isn't endemic, nor is the type specimen likely to have come from there. Jimfbleak (talk) 16:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Boycott map

Actually, the colour greenland is represents the fact Denmark has threatened it's individual government will boycott Durban if needed. The teal are members of the EU that have not specifically said they intend to boycott, but an EU minister says they will if things don't change. I didn't think colouring them light blue was honest since their own governments haven't specifically said anything and have remained vague. Should I change Greenland's colour anyways though? I assumed if Denmark boycotted than Greenland wouldn't participate, though I am not versed in the exact amount of political freedom Greenland has on the world stage. He's really not clear on what we mean by verifiable, or OR, or RS, or much of anything - and after I explained to him why a newspaper article about his Facebook group was to be used as a source rather than a link to the Facebook group itself, he went ahead and added the comments by members of that Facebook group as a source which is even less reliable. The article on Rashi says:

As in his commentary on the Tanakh, Rashi frequently illustrates the meaning of the text using analogies to the professions, crafts, and sports of his day. He also translates difficult Hebrew or Aramaic words into the spoken French language of his day, giving latter-day scholars a window into the vocabulary and pronunciation of Old French.

As a person who lived in France about 1,000 years ago, Rashi is, by definition, an expert in French as it was used in his time and place. The problem that we have is that he did not write using Latin orthography. He transliterated the local dialect into Hebrew. It is analigous are written to the way that mideval German words are written in Yiddish.

If you can find a better retransliteration using Latin charactors, please correct me.

re: Nicole Kidman

I'm not questioning whether you can classify her as a Roman Catholic, what I'm actually questioning is that you can classify her as an actual Scientologist to now say she is a "former Scientologist". The reference, which is the New York Post and not uncontroversial, doesn't clearly describe and define her so much a full and practicing member of the the Church of Scientology and the Wikipedia article stops short of it, only says "she had been an occasional practitioner of Scientology." I would actually be hesitant to use that publication as a source that she was much of anything definitively, based on what it says and our burden to support statements under WP:BLP. Does dabbling in a religion or a pseudo-religion or a belief system mean one would automatically qualify as a full fledged member? Does describing someone as "an occasional practitioner" define their participation enough to call them one? Not by WP:BLP standards and not by the reference that is given. That's why I removed the category, it's drawing a conclusion about her status that isn't supported by the content of the article it was in. I'd also note there is an arbcom ban on making a following revert if someone removes or changes your edits regarding Scientology. Read the template

I would encourage you to read the documentation for Template:Why before you make further use of it. Were you aware that adding that template automatically places an article in Category:Articles with specifically-marked weasel-worded phrases?

As well, the structure of that paragraph implies that WMC's admin status was revoked as a result of his editing on global warming topics. Instead, the problem arose from his handling of a particularly pernicious and obnoxious editor at cold fusion. For WEIGHT reasons, I would tend to argue that that particular story is largely irrelevant to everyone except for wikidramatists. (Though if you wanted to use a particular wording in the article, couldn't you have gone to the article talk page (or just been WP:BOLD) and added it yourself rather than tagging?)

Finally, I would thank you not to make further assumptions about how I would handle, participate in, vote on, or otherwise treat arbitration cases — particularly if you haven't bothered to note that I was a participant in the case in question. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 05:53, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Nevzlin and extradition

Hello! I have just read your old comment about removing the statement: "Since Israel does not expel Jewish fugitives to other countries, he is unlikely to be ever prosecuted. " You claim that "The statement is factually incorrect. Most famously, Israel expelled Meyer Lansky in 1970". Well sure it did. I don't know details of that story. But I do know that there is some law that either prohibits extradition or makes it exraordinary difficult. Actually, the provision is specified here: http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/Archive/Communiques/1995/EXTRADITION%20IN%20ISRAEL

(4) Nationals

Any person may be extradited from Israel except for a person who was an Israeli national at the time of the commission of the offense. However, to ensure that an Israeli national does not escape prosecution, Sections 7A and 10A of the Penal Law, 5737-1977 (as amended) extend the jurisdiction of the Israeli courts to hear cases in which an Israeli national is alleged to have committed a crime abroad, thus adhering to the rule "aut dedere aut punire".

Some Jewish fugitives (from the US and canada) claimed that they had been Israeli nationals from birth. I understand that this concept found some sympathy within Israeli justice system but was ultimately rejected as it caused too much tension with the US. Anyway, the law also requires that (1) there is an extradition treaty with the respective country and (2) the alleged crime is not of political nature. Although Nevzlin wasn't Israeli national at the time of alleged crimes, he will never be extradited because he does not fulfil conditions (1) and arguably (2). All we need is find reliable sources that say this, otherwise it will be original research. I am happy to discuss at length with you why I think this is important but for starts, I think the articl is sorely lacking in balance when it emphasizes doctrine and ritual over other elements of Judaism (e.g. Torah Study, that Jews have developed their own principles of logic and jurisprudence). Hi Tshilo: In the present ANI discussions about the correct names for the three Jewish Temples at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents#All talk pages, and more, were notified about the discussions and proposed moves an admin (Fram) involved in the ANI discussions but not familiar with the history of Wikipedia:WikiProject Judaism has raised some questions about how the Judaism WikiProject functions, such as "Whether that is standard practive [sic] at the Project, or only your standard practice, I don't know, but it has to change in either case. Subjects related to Jews or Judaism will not be named or treated in accordance with the Torah, but in acordance [sic] with reliable independent sources (and for the naming in accordance with English language reliable independent sources)." I have suggested that experienced admins familiar with the WikiProject be called in to answer those allegations. Yishivish - grammar, can you add learning/studying?

Can you add a point to the Yeshivish article about the use of the word learning as opposed to studying. The former is used in Yeshivish but translated for non-Yeshivish oilam.

Hey I was wondering if you ever figured out what was wrong with your feet I have the same thing. Doctor was no help.

It is called "Hemosiderin Staining", and in my case was likely caused by chronic hypertension. I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you that the condition is a warning sign that you seriously need to get your blood pressure under control. You might need to check yourself into a competent hospital for a few days for that, but I guarantee you it will be worth your while. The content of the Shuadit page should be moved to Judeo-Provençal. The word Shuadit is a pseudo-glottonym erroneously coined by Szajkowski, has it has been shown by Strich, A. 2015. “Judeo-Occitan (Judeo-Provencal).” In Handbook of Jewish Languages. Leiden: Brill, 517–551, and again by Nahon, P. (2021). Modern Judeo-Provençal as Known from Its Sole Textual Testimony: Harcanot et Barcanot (Critical Edition and Linguistic Analysis), Journal of Jewish Languages (published online ahead of print 2021). doi: https://doi.org/10.1163/22134638-bja10014.

The latter article by Nahon brings a wealth of new data about Judeo-Provençal that should be included in the WP article. As English is not my native language I do not feel confortable doing it myself, but maybe you could do it?.
