Please help me with...

Hello - I am an archivist and I am updating Simone Forti's wikipedia page - about 75% of the article was factually incorrect before I started this edit. I informed David Bernard of the Wikipedia Information Team about wanting to start this process of editing on December 19, 2014, and he wrote me back on January 18, 2015, saying to go ahead with this editing. If there is a better way for me to continue editing her page other than the way I am doing it, please let me know.

It would be great if you read these brief instructions on what to keep in mind while editing here. Overall you seem to be doing very well.

There is one problem I'm sorry to bring to your attention: using your conversation with Ms. Forti as a source. Of course this is perfectly good practice in academic art writing, but unfortunately we can't accept it. The most important issue has to do with our policy Wikipedia:Verifiability. Essentially, our readers have no good way to check that you are who you say you are—it's nothing personal, that's how the website is set up. As a result, our policy on reliable sources asks that sources be published somewhere, so that anyone who doubted the information could go look it up for themselves. Therefore, I'm afraid you'll need to find alternative sources to support the information from your discussion (dance journal articles, books, etc.; I'm sure you know all this) and, unfortunately, remove the information which is not to be found elsewhere.

Another point to keep in mind is what we call Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. There are many fine scholars who have expressed opinions about Ms. Forti's work, and a good encyclopedia article should give them all a fair say. Relative to usual Wikipedia standards, you've been giving a lot of attention to Ms. Forti's own words about her work, and it would be beneficial to balance that out with discussions from other authors.

Thank you for your response. I will read through all the articles you have linked to and I will change the citation that is not verifiable.

On the COI discussion board under topic Simone Forti, a user mentioned that I am sourcing Simone's own work. If she/he is not referring to the citation "Simone Forti in conversation with archivist Rena Kosnett," then this person must be referring to "Simone Forti: Thinking With The Body," which is the catalogue to Forti's 2014 Retrospective exhibition at the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg - this catalogue is partly Simone's own work, in terms of the paintings and drawings shown in the book, as well as some artwork-related texts - but the scholarly writing is not her own - the essays and interviews are by Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, Meredith Morse, Fred Dewey, Julia Bryan-Wilson, Liz Kotz, and Tashi Wada, and the book was edited by Sabine Breitwieser, the Director of the Museum der Moderne, Salzburg. The biographical and curriculum vitae information was compiled by Dance historian Megan Metcalf. If I cited Simone Forti as the AUTHOR of this source, that is a mistake and I will fix it. This book is an amazing resource for the Postmodern Dance world and should be used thusly. In terms of COI, I was the photographic editor for this catalogue and was employed to help the team in Salzburg gather much of the imagery used in the book. Wow! I didn't realize what a perfect source that book was. Probably the editor who raised the issue at the COI noticeboard didn't either. To make the situation clearer and make it easier for readers to see the information, I would suggest using the following template (bear with me; it looks confusing but you only have to change the first three bits):

To change the photo: If you click the "infobox" (box at top right) while in Visual Editor (what you've been using, "edit" instead of "edit source"), and click "edit" at the bottom, you'll see an entry labeled "Image", currently filled by "Simone Forti.jpg". To change it, go to commons: (the place where all the Wikipedias keep their pictures) search for a different photo, and copy its file name into that box instead.

To add a photo: in Visual Editor click "Insert"→"Media". This nifty tool searches through Commons for you.

Problem: the photo in the article seems to be the only one of Ms. Forti on Commons. If you want to change this, you will need a digital photo whose copyright you own or can obtain, which you (or the copyright holder) are wiling to give into the public domain. This is because WP is free to be copied by anyone, so all the pictures on it should be as well. Once you have that, follow the instructions at commons:Special:UploadWizard to put the image on Commons, and then you'll be able to find it using the Visual Editor search back here on WP. You can read more at WP:Uploading images, but this is the key information. Hope this helps!

@FourViolas - the new photograph I uploaded into Wiki Commons last week and linked to Simone Forti's wikipedia page has been deleted - I don't see a note from anyone, do you know why this happened? It will probably simplify things if I say straight out that David Bernard is the name I use there, though now I may want to change it. Use of exhibition catalogs as sources[edit]

I'll follow up on this and help you rewrite if needed. But yes, you can use the exhibition catalog. Just as you say, they are typically of mixed authorship. For plain facts, they can always be used/ For anything involving judgement, if the artist wrote that particular part, word it as "According to her statement in ..., her work intends ...." or if someone else, give specifically the name of the person who wrote that section. It is permissible to cite an creative person in any field for what they intend to accomplish, or what they say about their technique , etc., as long as that is made clear.

citation format here is tricky, even trickier than in the real world. Just give the information somehow you know, and someone will adjust it. DGG ( talk ) 06:54, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
