football[edit]

Hi, I just got your message. I notice Australian articles calling soccer football. How do I go about changing this? Rugby 666

Hell0, I thank you for the messages and the spirit in which they were sent. The policies overview was particuarly helpful. WTF(meant very civilly) are you talking about Aussie Rules as why soccer is not called football? rugby league football is what we call football and have called football for 5 generations in Australia, before that it was rugby union. Personally I enjoy all sports. However NOBODY, except for perhaps a hundred thousand idiots, calls soccer football in Australia and I think that needs to be changed on wikipedia. On English pages they call soccer football and therefore on Australian pages we should call football football as is our language. If you are from Victoria or south Australia or Western Australia than you would call rules football, BUT NOBODY CALLS SOCCER FOOTBALL. If wikipedia is meant to reflect commen terminology than the term soccer should be used on Australian pages because I was annoyed when I typed the word football and Australia and only things to do with ruls and soccer came up. Just my opinion. I understand that it is very difficult to change this, but I hope it is changed.(oh by the way, New Zealand, Pacific Islanders, Ireland, India and China use the term soccer, so I think that they are in a minority in the English speaking world even but I am only concerned about Australian pages. Cheers Rugby 666

Thanks for your warm message.[edit]

Shreshth91.

Thanks for your warm welcome. It's 11.43pm. Too tired to read anything. Will definitely see it tomorrow in detail. Today, I just glanced it.

WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume 1, Issue 2 - November 2006[edit]

Project News
  • The Performing Community: Thanks to many contributors like you, we're proud to share that our community is the third most performing community. It has more than 50 FAs related to India, to its credit, lagging only behing Wikiproject Biography and WikiProject Military History.
    (Courtesy: Ganeshk at Discussion Board).
  • The Wikipedia 1.0 Assessment statistics for India related articles show there are 51 Featured Articles, 5 Class-A articles, 16 Good Articles, 101 Class-B articles, 167 Start-Class articles and more than 4000 Stubs. There were more than 10000 unassessed articles related to India.
What's New?
Looking forward toward more contributions from you! Happy Editing!!
Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome. It has been weeks and months since the idea of newsletter was mooted among the WikiProject India Community. This would be our first full-fledged edition of our Newsletter, and we'd like to start by saying we are very happy to have you among us.
  • This is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips here. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know.
  • Advertisements for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll run special sections, and recurring columns in the coming issues.
This edition special
  • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may mention it at WikiProject India Outreach Department.

Provide us with ur news tips here.

You have been blocked from editing for 1 week for making legal threats on User talk:Jimbo Wales. Cheers! --May the Force be with you! Shreshth91 15:52, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you very kind and polite from you. But you do not solve problems in any ways if you block a person. This complete think goes over 1 year. I never wanted to inform Mr. Jimbo Wales about that because I could not see a necessity to do so. After this long time and very good try from German Admin Markus Schweiß who failed I could not see any other alternative.

Hello. I am a new user, and am in the process of creating and editing a page which I feel deserves inclusion in Wikipedia. Can you give me any tips? WikiProject India Newsletter: Volume I, Issue 3 - December 2006[edit]

Project News
  • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.
What's New?

content to represent the best of Wikipedia!

Note from Editor's Desk
  • Welcome to the December 2006 edition of our newsletter. Time flies past like matter into the black hole. It is interesting to notice that we are already into the last month for the year of 2006. 2006 saw discussions and development beyond realisation. In the world of Wikipedia where quality counts than quantity, we have come a long way. We've made better than 'nothing', to say the least, and even that is an achievement. I take this opportunity to thank everyone including those who have dotted the i's and crossed the t's.
  • As before, we'd like to stress, this is your newsletter, and we want you to be part of it as well. Provide us with news tips. It can be anything related to the project, from discussions to calls for help, and other interesting stuff within our community. If you have received or given any barnstars recently, do let us know. Sponsored content for recruitments within your WikiProject sub-groups are also welcome. We'll be very happy to include them here.
  • Before we sign off, Advance New Year Wishes, everyone.

  • How to?: The "how to" part of assessment is very simple. Just head on to the talk page of any India related page and you'll find the {{WP India}} template. Simply classify the article based on the content and the criteria mentioned here. You can find the detailed instructions here. If you think it may qualify for GA/FA status, first consider submitting the article for peer review.

Block summaries[edit]

I noticed that you recently blocked a user for having an inapropriate username - "06:49, 6 December 2006 Shreshth91 (Talk | contribs | block) blocked "Cordlesstwat (contribs)" with an expiry time of indefinite (user...)"

Please note that the block summary is seen by the blocked user. It should explain to someone who unfamiliar with Wikipedia why they have been blocked. For this reason it should be a sentence without jargon and should ideally link to the policy they have been blocked for violating.

Your summary is not sufficient in this regard. Although in this instance the reason the username is inapropriate is clear, there are other occasions when the reason would not be obvious to anybody not intimately acquainted with our blocking policy. Compare the following edit summary, which is a model of good practice:

"08:22, 6 December 2006 Winhunter (Talk | contribs | block) blocked "Holy crap I don't know who the hell we think we are (contribs)" with an expiry time of indefinite (Please read our our username policy and choose another name)". (crossposted to WP:AN) Thryduulf 09:31, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of whether they are explained or not, blocked messages should not contain jargon or in jokes. Thryduulf 10:25, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are cases where the user knows full well they have chosen an offensive username. However, there are plenty of situations where a user could have chosen a name in good faith but fall foul of the policy. There are many other situations where the intent cannot be determined, so its good practice to always use descriptive summaries. Thryduulf 10:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding this specific example, I had no idea of the background to this - I don't frequent IRC (partly because I've never got it to work, and partly I'd never get anything done!), I just saw it on the block log which I was browsing to see how long a vandal I was dealing with last night was blocked for. Thryduulf 10:57, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is really no point arguing over this, Shreshth. Always put in link to the WP:USERNAME page when you're blocking someone for an inappropriate username. — Nearly Headless Nick {L} 11:02, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking of 194.83.84.15[edit]

Hi Shreshth91! I notice you have blocked 194.83.84.15 for a period of 7 days. Yes I agree with your reason for blocking and I undoubetly see the "damage" to WP, but this IP address is a proxy server providing to Yale College, Wrexham, with many thousands of users and staff (over 2500 machines so I believe). I know measures are in place to aid a similar situation with AOL IP adresses, but may I ask is seven days appropriate to a shared IP address? I'm not saying unblock the address (even though I am a student at the college), I'd just like to know the reasoning for the longer duration block for a shared IP. Thanks in advance Marbles333 13:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
