Tfoxworth reincarnations

Permanently blocked User:Tfoxworth has commenced his weekly noctournal vandalism, at the moment using sockpuppet User:166.166.208.119, as previously reported here and demonstrated by his incarnations here and here. Please help. FactStraight (talk) 09:55, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry for my very delayed response; I got tied up. However, I see that the user has been blocked under WP:LTA. Sorry I couldn't be of help, but in the future you may get better results by going to WP:AIV. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:23, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

request for editing/peer review

Hi, want to help edit the UFC article? It's very good already, much improved of late, and closing in on good article status. I think with your help it could get there quickly. Thanks...! 68.82.197.202 (talk) 23:44, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi there, I will be glad to help. I will get to it when I can. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:26, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks!

Not a problem! Happy editing, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 08:47, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Please review my article

Please review my article on Mobiliy as a Service.. Please advise if it is ready to be moved into mainspace.. PCJain (talk) 07:03, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

While it still seems to be a bit promotional in tone, it is not bad at all, and hard facts are well sourced. Notability seems to be asserted. I see nothing wrong with moving it into the mainspace. Do you need me to do this for you? --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 17:26, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Shirik! Can you please move it? Also, I am interested in writing about telcommunication, networking and software related articles.. Can you suggest me some articles where I can start? Are you open to adopting new wiki editors? If yes, can you please be my mentor?PCJain (talk) 05:46, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Can you please let me know the exact title you want it to be? I think you misspelled it here so I just want to be sure. That being said, I've never considered adopting a user before but I have no objections to it. I certainly know my way around enough to help you on your journey. I will gladly adopt you. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 08:47, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Shirik! The title is Mobility-as-a-Service(MaaS).PCJain (talk) 06:00, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Done However the abbreviation in parentheses goes against our naming conventions, so I named it Mobility-as-a-Service and then proceeded to create redirects at Maas, MaaS, and Mobility as a Service. Hope that works for you. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:58, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your help once again! had one question. i would like the article to be tagged under Wikiproject Software. Can we do this too or a wiki editor/administartaor would do that? PCJain (talk) 10:14, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Anyone can do that. Simply go to the article's talk page and type {{WikiProject Software}} at the top. I'll leave this one to you for practice ;) --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 10:16, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Done! I knew how to do it but was not sure if I was supposed to do it. I enjoyed writing this article and have aldready identified my next articles that I wish to edit. Will come back to you for more help. :-)PCJain (talk) 10:23, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Honestly, I have no idea what to do in that case. Making a misc category makes sense, but I think perhaps going to WT:GA and asking for advice may be a better idea. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:51, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

The RfC on the Community de-Adminship proposal has begun

The RfC on the Community de-Adminship proposal was started on the 22nd Feb, and it runs for 28 days. Please note that the existing CDA proposal was (in the end) run as something of a working compromise, so CDA is still largely being floated as an idea.

Also note that, although the RfC is in 'poll format' (Support, Oppose, and Neutral, with Comments underneath), this RfC is still essentially a 'Request for Comment'. Currently, similar comments on CDA's value are being made under all three polls.

Whatever you vote, your vote is welcome!

Hi there. I assume you're referring to File:Panther_Creek_Falls.jpg. I should point out that this picture is licensed under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. This license, in a nutshell (though you should read the license for exact details) states that you can use the image without royalty if (1) you attribute me in your work and (2) you share your derivative work under the same or a similar license. If this license is incompatible with your needs (for example, you wish not to attribute me or wish not to release it under a free content license) I can probably work with you to dual-license it according to your needs. CE Request

Hi, I was wondering if you had time to read over and copy edit Neighborhoods of Davenport, Iowa and could provide suggestions before I consider submitting it for GA. Thanks, CTJF83 chat 04:23, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

I can certainly do this, however I am very tied up at the moment. I probably won't be able to get back to you until this Friday. I hope that's ok. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:05, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Oh sure, that is perfectly alright....I'm in no rush to GAC it. CTJF83 chat 20:53, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
I will be doing this tonight. Regards, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:11, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Done Please review my changes as some content was ambiguous and I may have accidentally altered the meaning. Also, I had to add in one {{check}} for this phrase: "Oak Lane is a neighborhood on Oak Lane...". Could you please double check that this is actually what's intended? It seemed a bit strange. Nicely done, it was actually very good, I'm just overly picky. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 02:45, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the review. The neighborhood is called Oak Lane, and it is on Oak Lane (the street), how should I clarify the wording? CTJF83 chat 03:05, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
That's fine then, I just wanted it double-checked because I lack the expertise to know if it was correct, but it looked suspect. Good work! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 03:06, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Thank you very much, off to GAC! CTJF83 chat 03:15, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

New page

I just wrote a draft of my first wikipedia page and was wondering if you could look it over.. I'm a new user here and am kind of confused by how all of this works. I've saved it under my profile and it's already been flagged as spam. I still have to revise it to make it more encyclopedic, but if you could help me at all, I would really appreciate it. Anorwick (talk) 08:20, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi there. I think the primary reason this is flagged for spam is that there are no reliable sources to back up claims such as "the biggest retailer in the country" in your article. Please note that independent sources with significant coverage are required to establish notability. Wikipedia also takes verifiability very seriously. If you can add some sources to back up the article, you will be in good shape. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:05, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Hey Shirik, thanks so much for cleaning up after us--there is only so much I can do running around the classroom! And on top of it all I couldn't log in to the computer with the LCD projector, and so I couldn't show the entire class how to do references. Thanks again! Dr Aaij (talk) 21:18, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Dr Aaij, not a problem. In fact, the majority of the work I do around here is just tidying up loose ends, copyediting, etc., so I hope you and your class don't take this offensively. It's simply why Wikipedia is so successful: All of our volunteers focus on something in particular that they do well, and nobody has to do everything perfectly. Keep up the good work! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:34, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. For me, that one thing I do, it's commas. Not very exciting. And your work is much appreciated, by me and by my students as well, I'm sure. Take care, Dr Aaij (talk) 00:06, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: Personal attacks

Hi, he is not a newcomer. He is an IP sockpuppet of Rcool35 who has been banned for music vandalism. This page contains most of his IP's so you should notice a pattern. Also I know that it is a personal attack per say but I've tried to explain to him and tried to help him be a Wikipedian but he is ignorant, arrogant and thinks everything is right, I'm just losing my patience with this vandal who won't stop. You should check my contributions for prior discussions with this "user". And if you have any follow up reply to this, I will read it and take it into consideration concerning my behavior. Thank you. Taylor Karras (talk) 00:22, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out. Still, generally no matter how disruptive someone is being, we don't want to resort to personal attacks. However, this is an interesting problem. I'll look into the pattern and get back at you; I may be able to construct an edit filter to deal with the problem (I haven't yet reviewed the pattern so I have no idea if this is applicable or not). In the meantime, have you filed a sockpuppet investigation to deal with the IP(s)? --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:25, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Many sockpuppet investigations were filed (I lent my comments to one) and all of them were blocked under WP:DUCK. He has a very predictable pattern and even if I filed it, it wouldn't do no good as there is no way to block him. The IP's are dynamic and range-blocking them would cause a problem for the users in Dallas, Texas. So should I still file it? (not in a negative way, I'm just looking for advice from you).Taylor Karras (talk) 00:31, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
I would go ahead and file it anyway; at a very minimum it would help keep an accurate record of the user. It is becoming increasingly apparent that this may be a candidate for an edit filter, assuming that the pattern is identifiable. I have to go get some food first, but as soon as I'm back I'll look into creating one. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:34, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Note: To clarify, an SPI without a checkuser request would be appropriate. There's no need for a checkuser per WP:DUCK, as you already mentioned. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 00:36, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Peer review request

I saw your name on the list of volunteers for general peer review editing and was wondering if you could look over Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Coach of the Year. Thank you in advance. Jrcla2 (talk) 23:47, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

I can certainly do this, but I won't be able to until later, probably Friday. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 23:54, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
I did a thorough copyedit on the article and then responded to the peer review request. It's a decent featured list candidate, but I think it needs a little more attention before it's nominated. Check my comments on the review page. Well done. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 22:24, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Peer Review request

Hello, I've been working on an article about the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final and have opened a peer review for it. My hope is to get it prepared for a successful FAC review. It has already received excellent feedback/improvements from one peer reviewer, but I believe it still needs more. In particular, I believe it probably needs a thorough copyedit the most, but any feedback would be helpful. Please, if you have time, take a look at the article, provide feedback, and learn a little bit about the most recent edition of the U.S.'s oldest soccer tournament. --SkotyWATC 20:44, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

I will gladly do a copyedit on this when I can. I don't really see how I can improve on the already-thorough peer review that has been done. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 15:28, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough. I wanted to get one more thorough review done as I worry that it's still not of the excellent quality required for WP:FA. Maybe I'm just paranoid though. :) --SkotyWATC 15:44, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Football league maps

Hi,

You might remember the problems I had some weeks ago with my football league maps. Now there seems to be a new, much wider problem:

Could you or someone else find out what happened to the maps on the following pages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1888–89_Football_League

thru:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1908–09_Football_League

I've done all these maps, and would do some more, if they only worked.

Yours sincerely,

Apanuggpak (talk) 18:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

I suspect that this has to do with the server outages today. If it hasn't reappeared in 24 hours I'll take another look. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:45, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

England football maps

Hi,

I noticed you're not available until May, so could you be so kind as to refer me to someone else who could help:

The maps [see map that seems to appear with this message] for all (it seems) Football league seasons, see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1888–89_Football_League

thru

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1908–09_Football_League

have been changed, and the projection is now quite different from the previous maps. Just look at where the names of the London clubs appear in the second map. I wonder if this is now the projection that will stay, or if there are any more changes to be expected.

It seems the team names for all these pages are in the wrong places and their placing will have to be done over again, and it is going to be a lot of work. I did have another 4 year done and ready to be put in the articles, but now I'm not sure about what to do, since it is not fun doing a lot of work and then having to do it all over again after a few weeks.

I had been thinking of eventually doing about 100 years of history (I had done about 20 years so far), so this is not a trivial matter.

Yours sincerely,

Apanuggpak (talk)

Oh I'm not "not available", I just won't be taking any requests for copyediting or peer review. I'll take a look at it and see what happened. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:08, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
I really don't see what's changed, honestly. You might consider bringing this up at WP:VPT to get a wider audience to see if they have any idea what's going on. Sorry I couldn't be more help. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 16:41, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

England football maps

Hi,

I can see why you might not notice any radical difference in the maps. When I looked at the "history" of some of these football pages, I noticed that the maps there all now look like the ones on the current football pages. What has happened is that even in the old versions the background is a new one.

I hope that the following pair of maps will illustrate the problem (both maps are current):

I have worked on the positions of the team names on this one, thus eliminating the most serious problem.

I actually just made a correction: "1889–90" pro "1888–89", but that does concern the position of the names. The images are just what they are in these articles. And all 12 teams are the same for these years, no team failed re-election after the first season.

I can certainly write to Village Pump, if you think that is the best tactic. However, I wonder if it might be possible to find a forum that is attended by Wikipedians who are football fans, English or otherwise.

Yours sincerely,

Apanuggpak (talk)

Sorry I didn't mean to say "I don't see the difference" but rather "I don't know why the change occurred", that is, I don't see anything in the history that would have prompted the change. The reason I recommended WP:VPT is because this looks like a technical issue that could use another pair of eyes to get assistance with what happened (while I consider myself technically savy, I really don't see what happened here). However, if you want to get in touch with other Wikipedians who are football fans, you might try WikiProject Football for some advice. Good luck! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 19:53, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
