The best solution might be a separate criticism section, but I think it has to be more balanced and neutral in tone than the recent, highly POV additions of critical material to the article. Infobox City v Geobox Settlement in Marin County

I like the new maps you have made for Marin County places, but it is not clear why you are converting from Geobox Settlement to Infobox City. In doing so you have removed information that I entered into the geoboxes that is not included elsewhere in the articles, as well as images that may be as valuable as those you have created. The infoboxes do not have locations for teh additional classes of information or for as many images. I can find no discussions about what you are doing on the article talk pages or on the template talk pages. Please explain or point me to your justification.--Hjal 07:12, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

The original discussion about this was at the Cities Wikiproject back in May, and you can find it archived at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cities/Archive 7. The scope of what I am doing goes beyond Marin county or even California. As far as the infobox vs. geobox thing, the script I use defaults to infobox as opposed to geobox for the sake of consistency. Of 174 counties that I have processed with my script so far, Marin County is the only one to use geoboxes instead of infoboxes, and even then only for a few of the CDP articles. I was unaware that the transfer had lost some images - I've gone ahead and replaced the images.

I am curious to know what additional information has been lost that cannot be reduplicated with the infoboxes. In any case, I have only run in to this problem in 3 articles out of well over a thousand. All of the major city articles use {{infobox city}} instead of {{Geobox Settlement}}. It would seem to make sense to me to be more consistent and use the infobox version. ɑʀкʏɑɴ 15:04, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually, the term "Geobox" does not appear in that archive. Your maps are a huge improvement for the larger cities in Marin--the ones that show up as more than a dot, unlike Stinson Beach and Muir Beach. They are also much better than the similar maps already (or previously?) used for Alameda, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties, which used a strange projection for the State outline. A few things, however. It would have seemed to me proper to discuss this issue with the people who participate on many talk pages, such as the ones for any of the templates that you are displacing. It might be nice to raise the subject on County talk pages or at regional Wikiprojects. Maybe this was discussed at Marin County or WP:SFBA and I just didn't notice it. Your implementation of Infobox city is labelling rural CDPs "City," which is inappropriate, but I suppose that I can go into the box and override it. Finally, the Marin map, as good as it looks, has some problems. An outline map of Marin County that doesn't show Tomales Bay looks very peculiar to a local. (It would look weird to me just for leaving out Bolinas Lagoon, but I'm really local.) And the small CDPs are still little more than red dots. I prefer the maps of the CDPs that I was lifting from the Census American Factfinder, that showed the CDP outline at a scale that could be seen, although they don't provide the lcoation within the County, which is very nice. See my last version of Muir Beach with the geobox, [1], and your current version, [2]. Nevertheless, I couldn't have done your maps, so I appreciate the work--I'll just go back and add the missing stuff, either to the box or the text. The CDP maps work well in the demographics sections, so I don't need to be able to squeeze those back into the infoboxes.--Hjal 06:16, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Replacing geoboxes with infoboxes was not part of the original intent of the project. It's just that in the course of the articles I have come across, I have come across a number of cities where someone has constructed a "raw" infobox not with a template but with various wikimarkup. I got used to changing those out, so when I ran across the geobox entries I first assumed they were also a couple of one-off examples. I still have yet to run across any more articles that use geobox aside from those 3 in Marin county. Either way it's not terribly important if geobox or infobox is used, the end result is basically the same :) For what it is worth, "Infobox City" is just an alias for "Infobox Settlement" - there are also redirects from "infobox town, infobox village, infobox borough, infobox place" and several others. They all have identical functionality and the difference is transparent to the reader.

As far as the maps go - they are all large scale maps, if you click them and go to the map itself you will see that they are much larger than they appear and you can get any detail desired :) They are also lossless vector maps so they can be resized by software without any loss of information, so additional resizing is certainly feasable. It's extremely difficult for me to customize these maps from the outset - they are all automatically generated from US Census boundary files. There's over 30,000 of them, so yeah it is awful hard for me to scrutinize and customize every one. They are easily editable however and I encourage anyone (including yourself) to improve them as seen fit. The precision and accuracy of my maps is limited to the precision and accuracy that the US Census Bureau puts in their boundary files. This is definitely where local expertise comes in to play, and I'd rely on help from other users to catch something I'd have missed.

what about naming consistancy Mountain View, California (city) and Mountain View, California (CDP) were named Mt. View, CC County, CA and Mt. View CA respectively, doesnt the actual incorporated city have preference for NOT having the county in its title and other el cerritos should have to have the county also in the title? for instance there is also a neighborhood named el cerrito, its title is el cerrito, san diego, california, sicne its part of the city of san diegoChuchopacman 23:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

• The city's official name is simply "El Cerrito". The rest is all added on to make it clear which one we are talking about. When there is more than one city in a state the typical method of naming on Wikipedia is to disambiguate using the county name. RfD

I noticed that you voted to keep the Wp:an/i and Wp:afd redirects at the Redirects for deletion page. I also voted to keep these redirect pages. I thought that if they were removed, then I would not automatically get to the pages I was looking for if I happened to type all lowercase letters, which would be pretty inconvenient. However, it turns out I was wrong. The software will automatically send someone to the appropriate page, even if they type all lowercase, and even if the redirect pages are deleted. It's just like a redirect, but without the redirect page. Deleting them will remove needless clutter in mainspace searches. Thank you for the concern. However, I am already aware that the software will treat "WP:afd", "Wp:afd", and "wp:afd" the same. However, given the fact that these terms are used for linking, upon deletion they would become redlinks. "bad" precedent?

• How was the spirit, ie. allowing consensus to build, not followed? This article was given the same amount of time and opportunity for discussion that every other article on AfD is afforded. Putting this back up for discussion simply because the Maths wikiproject wasn't notified and didn't get to chime in causes harm in that it sets a bad precedent.

It would set a good precendent, not a bad one. I've now proposed at Wikipedia talk:Deletion policy that this particular "bad precedent" should become a general prescribed rule as common sense would suggest. Could be. Use common sense. You're not supposed to be omniscient or infallible, but trying to approach completeness and correctness is a good idea. Then if some group is later found to have been left out that may have something useful to contribute, one can propose relisting. It's as if you tell someone who can improve an article: "You should have been here back when this article was being created. Since you weren't, we will now punish you by refusing to let you make the contributions from which we would all benefit if you made them." Michael Hardy 20:46, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

I fail to see why you insist that a refusal to re-open a discussion equates to a punishment. Why the victim complex? It's merely a matter of being prudent - if we allow an article to be undeleted on a whim because someone says "I didn't have a chance to voice my opinion" then what is the point of having a deletion process at all? It's essentially providing Wikiprojects with carte blanche undelete powers over any article they deem to be within their "domain of expertise". For what it is worth, there is no prohibition to re-creating this article with encyclopedic content, and if someone in the Math wikiproject has the information and capability to do so there is nothing prohibiting them from doing so. Howerver I must ask the question - you keep implying that there is some "new information" upon which to improve this article but have thus far failed to indicate what that might be. I'm not the one who framed it in those terms. I was responding to those who did. Someone said if Wikipedia's math community did not step in earlier, they should be excluded and that's their own problem. If the ambulance didn't arrive early enough to save one of the patients, then the ambulance should be punished by being prevented from arriving early enough to save the other one. ArkyBot suggestions

Hello,

My city was recently visited by ArkyBot, and I notice a couple of things that it could have done, but didn't. First, the page for the city contained a Template:coor dms, but ArkyBot didn't copy that into the infobox. That seems like a good idea to me. Second, you might want to add a constant timezone for each state you visit. Many, if not all states are on the same time zone throughout, and Colorado is one of them.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am currently working on the coordinates issue, I thought I had it fixed but apparently not! As some articles handle the coordinates differently it creates a little bit of a challenge regarding consistency, but I hopefully have a fix in the works. With regard to the time zones, I had initially ignored them because some states are split between time zones and it would be difficult for me to figure out which cities are on which side of the line, but you are right - many states are in just 1 time zone and at least for those states I could have it insert the timezone. South Dakota

Hey there, I already posted this exact thing on Ixnayonthetimmay's page because you both have worked with making county maps detailing and highlighting the incorporated and unincorporated communities that exist within (I've viewed the Los Angeles County and Maricopa County ones). I'm interested in doing this project for the 66 counties of South Dakota, but I need a little bit of help. I've found maps of some of the counties detailing the communities...but I wish to know what program you use or how you go about turning them into the SVG files that are displayed on Wikipedia. Basically, how can I turn this:[3] into something like this:[4]? If you could help me out, I'd be very grateful. • The program I use to create the files you are looking at is a custom-made program that interprets boundary files supplied by the US Census Bureau. The positive side to this is that I can generate the maps very quickly, but the downside is that all of the information is from the 2000 census and becomes outdated whenever city boundaries change, and the Census won't have new boundary files until 2010 :/ The best way to convert that PDF into what you are looking for would be to simply trace it with a drawing utility like Inkscape. If you are okay with the 2000 data, I could generate the maps for you based on Census information. Let me know! ɑʀкʏɑɴ 14:54, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Well if it wouldn't be too much trouble, I actually would like that very much if you could generate the maps with the 2000 Census information. I understand the boundaries have changed since then but I don't so much mind that. How long would it take to do each county in the state? Of course since South Dakota has a very small population and low population density, none of them will be very complicated at all. Minnehaha (above) and perhaps Pennington (the second most populated in the state) would be about as complicated as you can get. I agree with the proposal you made on the Second Lady of the United States AFD page to change the article's title as opposed to deleting the article entirely, however I also think that the questions raised regarding the article are applicable to the related, similarly-named category (Category:Second Ladies of the United States), which should probably be renamed along with the article although, I am not sure if we should wait until the AFD vote on the article is closed before initiating any action with respect to the category. --TommyBoy 19:19, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

Florida County maps around Lake Okeechobee

I notice from your map of Florida that you include large bodies of water on the west coast such as Tampa Bay. Why not put Lake Okeechobee in. It's the second largest lake wholly within the US (After Lake Michigan. The boundaries of the surrounding counties all meet in a point in the center. Without showing the presence of the lake, this creates some bizarre (to residents of the area) looking maps. Martin County, Florida. for instance has a fairly rectangular land shape. Adding the cone on the west side makes it look really strange. Also you deleted the disamb header I had in Stuart, Florida. I shortened it and put it back in. The article has been cloeaned up by deleting lots of stuff that belonged in articles on the County or other cities or places in the county, even some in adjoining counties. clariosophic 20:23, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

• The maps are auto-generated using US Census data which unfortunately does not include the borders for Lake Okeechobee. I agree they would look better with them - but they will have to be custom modified. Hi. I found you listed at Wikipedia:Translators_available#Spanish-to-English, and you're the first still-active fluent Spanish speaker I found. :) There's a probably Argentinian user requesting assistance at Talk:Bella Vista, Tucumán. (When I first stumbled upon the article, it was tagged for deletion as nonsense. I removed the speedy, noted some necessary improvements and listed it at clean-up.) He is the article's author and seems to want to make the improvements but is apparently concerned about his poor English. If you can help him, I'd appreciate it. If not, I may pointer him to Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina. • Do you mean northeast of Valdosta? The clear polygon is the Moody AFB census-designated place, a part of the base that the Census defines as a specific place for demographic purposes. I saw your comment on the "proposed" South Mountain Freeway at azcentral.com. It was neat to see a name I recognized. You're totally right, Ahwatukee needs to stop whining already, the freeway has been in plans since the mid-80s, it would relieve a lot of congestion on the I-10 and other valley freeways, it would actually make THEIR commutes easier and give local businesses new growth opportunities... but that's what you get when you try to do anything in Ahwatukee. That's why they scrapped the Paradise Parkway along Bethany Home (still very much needed) years back, "neighborhood opposition" -- i.e., rich WASP families don't want a freeway near THEM... they want it near the low-income Mexicans instead. If only everyone else who is tired of waiting in traffic on the I 10 between Pecos and 51st Ave. could veto their opinions and make them be quiet. I just hope that no other planned freeways face opposition like this, we are already playing a game of catch up when it comes to our transporation infrastructure and people whining like that is setting us back years and years (that freeway could be almost finished by now if those people had just shut up at the beginning). Ha! Well I have to say that's the first time someone (who I did not already know otherwise) has connected me here on Wikipedia to .. well .. somewhere else. Yeah, if there was any doubt that was indeed myself who made that post over on azcentral. I couldn't agree with you more though - Ahwatukee is full of a bunch of people who moved there because they wanted the view of the mountainside and then threw a fit when someone builds a bigger home next to theirs and blocks the "view". People only want things that are convenient to them but as soon as there is something they don't like, well, it's off to city council to protest! Unfortunately I would be willing to bet that future freeways will face just as much opposition. The only reason the 303 is going smoothly is because all the right of way was already bought up and they actually did it right there, planning wise. Hmm. I don't know that there will be that much trouble with the other freeways already planned up to 2025 in the Regional Transportation Plan. Working-class families in Avondale seem unlikely to protest the 801, and much of the 802 will be going through farmland (besides, they have signs on the roads that say "site of future Williams Gateway Freeway", so I would hope people are more aware than in Ahwatukee). ArkyBot

Hi Arkyan, thanks for all the great maps, they look fantastic. I've been running the CapitalBot for the last few days to add all of the infoboxes too, and expect to finish all states by around Monday. I'm pretty sure that our two bots are using the same database info, so all of the info that your bot adds will mostly have been added by the one I've been running already. I think a great modification to your bot would be to fully automate it (which would save you time) and to make it just upload and insert the maps (which is fairly straightforward, so I think full automation would be easy). Thus we could get all the maps standardized and uploaded really fast, and you wouldn't have to waste time going through all of the infoboxes again. What do you think? Or if you were willing to share your code I could modify my bot to help with the maps.

Also, I noticed that the ArkyBot has been producing very wacky infobox text for the last day or two (mostly from pages my bot has already visited). Take a look at the text from Winchester, Idaho for an example (shown below). Note that the comments are all messed up and are being placed on the wrong lines. Also, you seem to be doubling lots of comments (for example there are two comments about maps, images, location, area, and population, and not all next to one another). Also, the equal signs seem to have gone haywire. I also think that we could do without the majority of the extra parameters you're adding in most pages, as they will rarely be used. Basically, what you could do, since my bot has already added all of the information that your bot is adding (except the maps), is if the page contains a FIPS code or GNIS id, then my bot has seen it, and you could just do the map; otherwise you could add the entire infobox. I think that will keep the problems with formatting down and will vastly speed up your work.

Anyways, I don't mean to step on your toes, I just thought we could figure out a more efficient way to get all the infoboxes looking right, containing maps, and having their code format not look quite so strange. Let me know what you think. --CapitalR 05:12, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the notes and suggestions. I didn't realize you were running a bot to get all of these fixed up - that's great! The main reason that I had thus far been unwilling to fully automate the bot is because I kept running in to little infobox issues here and there, and I do like to review the maps for accuracy. However, if you're going to be done with the infoboxes by Monday, I think I can modify my bot to ignore infoboxes and instead just focus on the maps. I know that can be done pretty fool-proof, and I can fairly safely set that to a fully automated task and get them done a lot quicker.

As far as the wacky infobox comments, that's my fault. I had also been using the bot to help get rid of some deprecated infobox tags, but that project has already been completed by ... ahh I can't remember who. In any case, the infobox comments aren't usually used when someone puts the box in manually so my bot wasn't expecting to see any, and I suppose the fact that your bot put them in kind of throws it off.

I'll rework my code to skip infobox processing and focus just on maps replacement, and then I can probably go ahead and mostly automate it. The map generation process, itself, is mostly automatic but does require a little bit of manual oversight so that's likely to become the limiting factor but things will still be rather sped up. I think the very fact that it doesn't get traffic seems to justify its deletion or overhaul. Consider; which would receive more vocal opposition... the nomination of the main page of Wikipedia for deletion, or the nomination of Category:Wikipedians for deletion/overhaul, something that unless there were a group of people who used the user categories actively, they would know nothing about? Hi Arkyan... Could you take a look at the map image in the infobox for Columbus, Georgia?
