Edit summaries[edit]

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

Oh, and in the case of the millionth article, your changes were reverted as per Wikipedia:Avoid self-references. Please refer to articles on their talk pages. Thanks again! - L1AM (talk) 05:43, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on D3o Lab, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable. If you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself.

Please read the criteria for speedy deletion (specifically, article #7) and our general biography criteria. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Bubba hotep 20:39, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

"I noticed you added a sources-needed tag for D3o Lab even though there are several sources at the bottom. What sources would I need to add to this article for it to not need the sources tag?

Thanks! Sharkface217 21:48, 29 October 2006 (UTC)"

It's Ok. You added them while I was messing about with the talk page and detagging it for speedy. I was wary at first and not a little suspicious, but you seem to have have allayed all those misgivings now. Good luck with it. ;) Bubba hotep 21:52, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mate. I've added that page to my watchlist (currently at about 2,900 articles !! - I really must have a cull when I get some spare time). You've already mentioned the first 3 things that occurred to me: the common language and British heritage; Free Trade Agreement; and Iraq. Our strong links really started happening during WW2, when the US helped us out at the Battle of the Coral Sea; then there was the ANZUS alliance; we supported you guys in the Vietnam War; Harold Holt took us "all the way with LBJ"; and it's been growing steadily ever since. Some would say we've now gone too far, to the point of an overt and unapologetic Americanisation of Australia (MacDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut, Starbucks everywhere you turn; and the majority of commercial free-to-air TV programs are from over there). It's not too surprising that the term "the USA's deputy sherriff" is frequently bandied about. I'm on a roll now, so I'd better quit before this becomes a rant. Cheers. Hi. I see you've been creating lost (and I do mean lots!) of USS *** articles today. No complaints there but, if I may, it would be nice if you could also categorize the articles as you go along. The Uncategorized articles backlog is very, very big and I'm sure those of us working on it will be grateful if you can categorize these stubs before the bots throw'em into the backlog. Barnstars[edit]

It is obvious that you like to give out Barnstars by the hundred, and I'm sure everyone that has received a Barnstar from you is very appreciative. However, I must advise you that giving a Barnstar to just everyone you come across is not the way to do it. Barnstars are awarded as special recognition, and the giving out of hundreds degrades the quality and significance of the award. Please bear this in mind, as you continue to edit, and I advise that you give out no more for the time being. If you want awards yourself, trading barnstars is not a good way to do it either, it is much better to earn recognition for excellent editing and community service that to simply buy them from other editors. Thanks, Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 04:45, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you completely; though there is a large amount of recognition on Wikipedia, those who deserve it don't necessarily get it. I think this discussion should be moved to the Village pump or Barnstar brigade committee. Dfrg.msc 1 . 2 . 3 05:38, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There is, however, a WikiProject on Aussie politics; you may wish to bring the article to their attention and see if they can help you out. RfA comment[edit]

Thank you for your kind words, and I can certainly understand your uncertainty. However, from your later words, I suspect you may have misunderstood the incident. It sounds like you think I tried to defeat some kind of security measures or something; I just read a user page, much like our user pages here. Here is an example of what they look like: [2]. Unlike WP, though, where anonymity is assumed, Amazon will vouch for your RealName if you want them to. There are more details at the top of the RfA, but no "exploit" was involved. Re:Question and a statement[edit]

Ahh!!! The world is shrinking!

^__^

Anyway, this is what I did for the status thing:

1) Create User:Nishkid64/StatusChange2

2) You can copy what I have there if you want, but you can basically make changes to what the things represent and will do. Like, you can change "OMG" to "Online" or something like that.

3) Create User:Nishkid64/Status2

4) Copy and paste from my thing except substitute Nishkid64 with Sharkface217 and you can control your status from there. You just change where it says OMG to whatever you had in /StatusChange2.

Hope that explains what I did. Tell me if you have any problems. Nishkid64 17:23, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops sorry about that. I forgot that I made a redirect for that page. Okay, the proper page is User talk:Nishkid64/Status2

The code:

{{User:Nishkid64/StatusChange2|OMG}}

Just substitute Sharkface217, and the words that you used. Nishkid64 18:03, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I think I fixed it for you. Then on your user page or user talk page, you can do
{{User:Sharkface217/Status2}}

Ehh...[edit]

Don't go for mediation. It's not that big of an issue, and mediation would just delay a easy prognosis by some admin like myself. Have you tried discussing the issue with Ral315 and Quiddity? If you take a look at Ral315's user talk page, there is some sort of discussion going on about the issue. Tell him why you feel that the link should be there, and I'll step in later on if things don't go well.

In other news, how did you like Borat? I saw it at like 4 yesterday (all 5 shows that day were sold out at our theater). Nishkid64 00:46, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just put in my support vote ;-). Hope it passes, and there can certainly be lots more written about it. I would add to it, but I really don't have much knowledge of foreign affairs. - Mike | Talk 04:53, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Done... and I have no objections to being called "man" :p I myself overuse the word "dude" in real life. Got some more votes in too. Good idea to take it COTW. Anyway, I'm starting my break now, so take care, and I'm eager to see it when I get back! riana_dzasta 05:05, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re. Small favor[edit]

It does look like an interesting article so I'll add my vote. However, I prefer not to try to get more votes, as such procedure might fall under canvassing. I'm not sure though, but anyway I prefer votes to come naturally. Best regards.--Húsönd 05:16, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked[edit]

I have blocked you for your spamming. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:24, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some users have been asking me to lift the block. I most likely will. However, keep in mind that thios is second block for posting messages on user talk pages that seem to be spamming. This is what we call vote stacking and that is not allowed on Wikipedia. In order to accomplish your goal (from what you are doing), use consensus and not spam or bribe anyone. Deal? User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 06:15, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I fully agree to your terms. In fact, I just emailed you my appeal. I do fully apologize for my votestacking/canvassing/campaigning. I was not aware of Wikipedia's policy on those matters at the time. Again, I am sorry and I hope to amend the error of my ways (firstly, by going through Wikipedia's official policy). Sharkface217 06:18, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sharkface. I've just noticed the message that you got caught canvassing for votes for WP:ACOTF. As the main coordinator for that, I don't really mind why people vote. What I care about is that people who vote are prepared to contribute if their preference comes up. Some of the highest-voted articles end up with virtually no edits at all when selected, yet others catch people's interest and get significant improvements. I think the main thing is actually to have a champion for the article during it's time at ACOTF - someone needs to set up a to-do list, a framework, and maintain an interest. I helped to trim out the excessive templates and establish a framework based on the few sentences that were there, but someone else needs to do the rest - probably you. --Scott Davis Talk 08:37, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
IMO this block was directly contrary to WP:AGF. I too have asked Zscout370 to reduce the block. An indef block is completely unnecessary for a a productive editor who is unaware of policy. At the very least he could have left you a warning first. - Mike | Talk 13:54, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Australian collaboration of the fortnight[edit]

Hi. You nominated United States-Australia relations for WP:ACOTF. It has been selected, so please improve the article in any way you can. In particular, successful collaborations often involve the nominator setting up a {{todo}} list to help other editors recognise where they can help. Good luck with your exams etc. --Scott Davis Talk 13:00, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Put {{todo}} on talk:United States-Australia relations just below the {{WP Australia}} template. When you preview or save that, there will be a link to another page that you can edit to create the list. See for example talk:Mining in Australia. I hope this is the info you wanted. Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 09:19, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User page[edit]

Hey there, Sharkface.

I just wanted to know why you put up a tag that said your userpage was "protected from editing until disputes have been resolved". Putting up that sign doesn't do anything, unless an admin actually protects the page. So, I suggest you remove that notice from your userpage. Thanks. Nishkid64 14:18, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sharkface217, I always look at other user's user page; they are different from my user page. Other user's user page are nice and have lots of writing, and I think my user page just have so little writing. Other people might think my user page is so boring. Of course I don't want other user or people think it is boring. I saw other user's user page can show the time, and it can change! I think those are some kind of effects. But I don't know how they did that. So, this is the problem I had. So can you help me...?

THANKS SO MUCH!

Mike's RfA Thanks
Sharkface217: Thanks very much for your support at my RfA. Unfortunately, it was clear that no consensus was going to be reached, and I have withdrawn the request at a final tally of 31/17/4. Regardless, I really appreciate your confidence in me. Despite the failure, rest assured that I will continue to edit Wikipedia as before. If all goes well, I think that I will re-apply in January or February. - Mike | Talk 04:36, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your input[edit]

Thank you for taking part in my RfA. The RfA was not successful, mostly because I did a pretty bad job of presenting myself. I'll run again sometime in the next few months, in the hopes that some will reconsider.

In the meantime, one of the projects I'm working on is A Wikimedia Administrator's Handbook. This is a wikibook how-to guide intended to help new administrators learn the ropes, as well as to simply "demystify" what adminship entails. If you are an administrator, please help out with writing it, particularly on the technical aspects of the tools. Both administrators and non-administrators are welcome to help link in and sort all of the various policies regarding the use of these tools on wikipedia in particular (as well as other projects: for example, I have almost no experience with how things work on wiktionary or wikinews). Users who are neither familiar with policy or the sysop tools could be of great help by asking questions about anything that's unclear. The goal is to get everything together in one place, with a narrative form designed to anticipate the reader's next question.

A second project, related but not entailed, is a book on wikimedia in general, with a history of how various policies evolved over time, interesting trivia (e.g., what the heck was "wikimoney" about?), and a history of how the wikimedia foundation itself came about and the larger issues that occurred during its history (such as the infamous "Spanish Fork").

Again, thanks for your input on the RfA, and thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide for the handbook. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 12:57, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Barnstar[edit]

Thanks for the Barnstar, Sharkface. I had really pretty much given up on Wikipedia, despite over 2000 quality edits, due to the difficulty in maintaining quality: too much vandalism, too many well-meaning but non sequitor edits, too many POV edits, and lack of support/recognition, among other problems. Due to your random act of kindness, I may just reconsider. Madman 17:18, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Military history WikiProject![edit]

Re: Task Force Proposals[edit]

Not bad ideas, necessarily, but:

  • Egypt is pretty densely covered by task forces already (i.e. the African military history, Ancient Near Eastern warfare, and Classical warfare ones). Given that the articles aren't lacking for coverage, I would hesitate to create yet another task force unless there were a substantial number of editors that wanted to work specifically on Egyptian military history—and I don't really think we have that much interest in the topic at the moment.
  • Space warfare is more reasonable in theory, but the number of articles there is extremely small, given that there hasn't been much warfare in space, at this point. While we may want to break it out into its own task force in the future, I think the Military technology, Military science, and Military aviation task forces probably cover such few articles as are available pretty adequately right now.

More generally, we've been trying to create task forces only where we have:

  1. A substantial number of applicable articles
  2. A substantial number of interested editors

We've particularly tried to minimize the number of overlapping "sub-task forces" except where truly needed, as they tend to wind up splitting editors' attention and preventing any of the groups from really taking off. Kirill Lokshin 21:53, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, that's pretty much it. (It's worth pointing out that an Egyptian task force would be quite feasible if we had a large number of editors working on that particular topic; this might happen sooner than warfare in space.) Kirill Lokshin 22:25, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Jessica Hopper, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable (see the guidelines for notability here). If you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. Warnings sometimes aren't effective, but still, it's an easier way to recognize vandals. I mean, if an admin sees a person with a lot of recent warnings, he/she can then block them. It all works out in the end. Anyway, just try to improve like I and many others suggested, and you'll be fine. =) Nishkid64 21:32, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I saw your recent contributions to WP:FPC, which is great. However, I just wanted to say that although your votes are appreciated, it would be nice if you elaborated more than "per quality of picture". While this is all very good, it doesn't really explain anything, since a we are precisely voting on the quality, so saying per quality coul be good or bad. If you don't feel like writing out exactly what you feel, then you can just say "per (username)", for someone who shares your views. Otherwise, just try to put a small comment about the quality itself, like "too much blown highlights, but nice and sharp". Thanks! NauticaShades 07:37, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your participation on AfD[edit]

Hello, Sharkface. I've closed a number of AfD the last few days, and I have noticed that you almost always participate with a comment like "keep per above". Now, you may have your reasons to do so, but I suggest that whatever they are, you may be wasting your time: AfD is not a vote, and I am inclined to discount such comments (just like "delete per above"'s) when closing an AfD, for the reasons set forth in WP:ILIKEIT. This is even more the case if an user's contribution history (like yours) indicates that they tend to very indiscriminately "vote" one way or another.

For this reason, thank you for your contributions to AfD, but if you want them to be effective I suggest that you consider stating your own reasons to keep or delete an article in AfD discussions, based on applicable Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Thanks and bye, Sandstein 05:42, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Also, Google hits alone are not enough reason to keep an article. Everything ever posted on the internet has Google hits, but to be notable the hits have to be relevant (about the subject, not something with the same name), non-trivial (no in-passing mentions) and from a reliable source. Try WP:BIO, WP:MUSIC and WP:WEB for the most oft cited guidelines we have. - Mgm|(talk) 13:03, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Vandal[edit]

Thanks for letting me know. I blocked the IP vandal for a period of three months. Also, remember to use proper warning templates when warning users. Such as {{test4-n}}, etc. Nishkid64 22:23, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can change it yourself. However, I don't think it's Level 2 now. Level 2 is when all hell breaks loose lol. Nishkid64 22:26, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Down syndrome[edit]

I disagree with the revert of the "will improve" - it's not vandalism, the editor is right - medical articles should be descriptive, not prescriptive. Sandy (Talk) 00:12, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - understandable, considering the level of vandalism. I'd change it, but I don't want to get close to 3RR will all the activity on the article today. Sandy (Talk) 00:16, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My Editor Review[edit]

Hey Sharkface217, I just wanted to say thanks for the review you gave me; I really appreciate the time you took to write it, and I agree with all of your suggestions. You're the second Wikipedian who has offered to nominate me for adminship in the future. I noticed that you are also on editor review, and I'd like to return the favor and write a review for you (when time permits me, which will hopefully be soon).

By the way, thanks for giving me the Random Acts of Kindness barnstar a while back!

Best regards! -- P.B. Pilhet / Talk 18:22, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Where did it go?[edit]

TechWiz asked for the wikibreak template to be deleted. That's why there's a redlink on your userpage. Nishkid64 19:50, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for voting[edit]

File:In-the-dark.jpg

Thank you for voting in my RfA which at 51/20/6 unfortunately did not achieve consensus. In closing the nomination, Essjay remarked that it was one of the better discussed RfAs seen recently and I would like to thank you and all others who chose to vote for making it as such. It was extremely humbling to see the large number of support votes, and the number of oppose votes and comments will help me to become stronger. I hope to run again for adminship soon. Thank you all once more. Wikiwoohoo 19:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
