Grayscale maps[edit]

Interesting you said that. I can't stand grayscale maps I think they look ugly. See my converstation here with (another German) User talk:NordNordWest. He is adament that we MUST have ALL maps in grayscale becauee apparently there was a consensus on german and french wikipedia and he will continue to standardize ALL maps in gray until every location map is the same. We can always create deririatives using color. Count Blofeld 15:43, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heres mine:

Wanna see something scary: See progress so far with Village Development Committee (Nepal) Count Blofeld 20:35, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Its great because it shows how much work has actually been done and what little is left to do with it and also the maps make a huge difference for understanding them. Tomorrow I'll see if I can dig out some sources to fill out the intro a bit with referenced text. If eventually we can have a half decent article on all of the Nepalese district and most of the VDCs filled out it will be a great progression. I'm off now for a bit, when I return I'll probably tag some of your senators. Best Count Blofeld 20:44, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks. Hey you know you can always make up your own barnstars like I did with your Antarctican penguin award! Do you mind if I add a Nepal flag to your barnstar? P.S Moonraker (film) also passed GA. Count Blofeld 20:01, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some images at flickr of Salleri an example of some of the articles I've started. WOuldn't it be awesome if flickr and the commons joined forces and they out an end to this copyright malarky? I wish we could get images of ALL places and people will begin to see what they are like Count Blofeld 20:49, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah that particular link only had 10 images anyway but it does have some astonishing images of Bhutan and practically all over. You know those images which show what everyday life and culture is like in places that most of us have never heard of. Thimpu now has some decent images I found in the commons. Also see Khumjung. Looks amazing -a Yeti mask.

Interestingly somebody has started a Bhutannica. Cool name! Count Blofeld 21:33, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally the images of Salleri look like Namche Count Blofeld 21:42, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did you see the images after? I'm not editing much today or tomorrow as I'm tired! Count Blofeld 21:26, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Albemarle Spelling?[edit]

I just want to check, because your response a couple of months ago wasn't clear. You used some sort of an automated tool to create a metric pantload of entries for place names in Albemarle County, Virginia, in every instance misspelling the name of Albemarle as "Albermarle." Do you intend to fix all of these, since you apparently are facile with these sorts of auto-Wikipedia tools? Or should I add to my personal to-do list to open and fix the spelling of a single word on 100 Wikipedia entries?

I'm working on deleting many of these, as we discussed; so far I've just updated the Albemarle County, Virginia footer template. "Commonwealth, Virginia" does not exist. It would be like "State, Maryland." Nor does "Old Dominion, Virginia." That's just a nickname for Virginia. And so on. --WaldoJ (talk) 15:01, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for your help, Albert. I'm just trying to avoid having to update that spelling by hand, since I'm not clever enough to know how to employ one of these batch tools. :) --WaldoJ (talk) 20:23, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Dude. You are hard-core. In that case, I think it's only fair that I take a chunk of them. :) My connection is pretty saturated now, and will be until...uh...March, actually (I run a website about the state's legislature, and provide video their goings-on), so opening pages is pretty slow for me. I'll take A-E, which is about 40% of them. --WaldoJ (talk) 21:03, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I've often seen references to AWB, but never explored it. I guess I should now. And thanks, too, for the pointer to Rklear's work in creating Wikipedia entries for the General Assembly. I'm so glad that he's taken on that project. --WaldoJ (talk) 21:29, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

María Elena Marqués birth year?[edit]

Re this edit: I couldn't find a reliable source for María Elena Marqués's birth date; sources ranged from 1923 to 1926. What is the policy for birth year templates when we don't know the birth year? Eubulides (talk) 09:41, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stud of the Year Award[edit]

And stud of the year award goes to Mswati III of Swaziland. 23 kids at age 40, 14 wives! We're making good progress with the French senators. You've been quiet the last few days. Everything OK? Count Blofeld 15:21, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't heard about that, bet thats news is raging on national news in France. I thought it was going to be one of the ones we had started. WOuldn't that have been weird if it had been one of the senators we had started and within days he had done that! It reminds we of a fews actors I've started who died shortly after me starting their articles. Spooky. Count Blofeld 15:33, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOL yes kind of like Se7en but somehow "eliminating" people by planning it on wikipedia. Its not unheard of of course for people who have died on here to have done so. Didn't that wrestler who lived in Georgia edit wikipedia shortly before he killed himself and his family? Count Blofeld 15:38, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

News over here at present is concentrating on Piracy in Somalia. Count Blofeld 15:43, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I know it does my head in all the financial crisis talk, it has done for weeks and that phrase "credit crunch" is the most annoying of all, I'm waiting for some cereal company to start a new snack bar or something just to cause some outrage. Then when a scandal comes along like the Russell Brand phone calls the British blow it out of proportion to try to offer some new story to sidetract from the economic crisis. If people weren't so god damn greedy!! everything financially would be running like clockwork. Well I just made a few hundred bucks on ebay in the last week alone so people evidently still have money to spend! One pair of Levi Jeans I sold this week, I listed it auction and as a buy it now price at twice the auction price. I had no bids yet somebody was willing to give we the full whack for it! If I managed to do that all the time I'd be a rich man! I've tried to get into internet advertising but 95% of it is a con and the money they make are precisely from selling con packages to people who are interested by ebooks and worthless weblinks of "how to do it". Half of them are based on gambling and online casinos anyway which isn't my thing and many of them lead back to ebay anyway. Potentially the web could make me pretty rich but I'm still trying to figure something out which could be making me a mint It is a great feeling though to have money flow into your paypal account while you are editing wiki. I need to up the amount though. I also make money as a guitar tutor, I could probably do that full time if needs be or get some work as a session musician (which would be MUCH better). If I had gone through with my legal studies at Cardiff University I'd be a qualified practising barrister by now and raking it in. I would find it too much to handle though, preparing advadavits on weekends, making it a 7 day job and I wouldn't be enjoying it. Someday I'll find work hopefully as a travel journo or with some NGO in regards to environmentalism.Shame wiki doesn't pay people.

I come from a writing family and it has been suggested that I start writing some short stories or novels and tring to get something published. I have ideas all the time, my latest was an idea for a novel set in India during the turn of the 20th century about a boy who meets an elderly Christian missionary and becomes a Salvation Army leader. He is disowned by his family for being a Christian and becomes isolated from the Hindu community aroud him. He becaomes successful overseas yet one day receives a letter form his mother seeking for forgiveness. The family lost everything by flooding and are living in serious poverty and his father is dying. Ironically the family that disowned him because of his religious beliefs now seek his help, and he helps the community that weren't there for him when he needed them. Sound like a good book? Count Blofeld 15:58, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds like a great idea. Yes I love the novels where is based around an actual historicak event and the novel needs researching like an encyclopedia article does. Taking an event in history, for instance the slave trade in colonial africa/united states or an earthquake in central america, or even set in Rwanda during the genocide of 1994 or something and trying to offer a fictional account of the lives of people at that time around an actual period or event. Thats what makes a novel that bit more special I think. Count Blofeld 16:38, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely and the fact that potentially many people can relate to it makes it all that more attractive to read. The potential for fictional novels based on actual historical events tied to specific geographical locations with a sense of identity and place to which people can relate to is vast, even locations like D.C. which you;d think would have become a cliche but far from it as you've said. Even if you change the context of a place or event, in this case getting down to roots away from the usual political interpretation of D.C. the areas that can be explored can be potentially huge when you alter the usual context and how others commonly see a given situation/place. Count Blofeld 17:28, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know what you mean. I know heaps about NYC, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Miami and even Seattle, Boston, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Philadelphia. From popular culture though in comparison I know frightfully little about D.C. except the White House and its politics and the Library of Congress and only know more about it these days via wikipedia Count Blofeld 17:46, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the redirect. I started the Treatment of the wounded in the Second Boer War earlier and am trying to fill in those red links on notable surgeons. Any idea if Watson Cheyne exists?Plenty of goggle hits. I find it a bit annoying when people like "Sir Sean Connery" are foribidden from being called a "Sir" in title but them some toff baronet is permitted to have his title in the title if you see what I mean. Count Blofeld 15:59, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes he did exist, just found him Count Blofeld 16:03, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I brought a book on it out of the library. I also scanned some cool images from the book earlier. The one with the guy with the holes in him I thought was rather good! I would spend more time on borrowing books and writing full articles but too much is required to do other tasks such as starting articles or cleaning up existing ones. Count Blofeld 16:07, 21 November 2008 (UTC) Excellent work Mr. Herring. You'll probably want to take it easy for a few days now! If you're up for stubbing that missing Spanish pol list or the French assembly members later let me know. Count Blofeld 11:09, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

Is it not too much in so short time? I am here for working, not for awards (though it is encourage for the further work). I want write articles for all papyri and uncials manuscripts (and some minuscules and lectionaries). By the way I create sometimes articles about libraries, museums, collections etc. Greek text of New Testament is a field of my interest, and I like manuscripts. In result editing about manuscripts of New Testament is a nice job. I like it. Additionaly en-wiki is international and working on it more nice than editing on other wiki's. F.e. on pl-wiki I have received a lot of demands, requests, and another requests. I like also fr-wiki nobody disturb me, and no requests. On fr-wiki we can find a lot of professional articles, but of course en-wiki is the best. Cordialement. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 21:19, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ridiculous request[edit]

This might sound a tad crazy, but could you verify the info from French books in 1964 Gabon coup d'etat? Thranslating an article and then trying to bring it to FA is something I will NEVER do again. :) ~the editorofthewiki (talk/contribs/editor review)~ 22:32, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Missing politicians[edit]

You may or may not pleased to know I've started a directory of missing politicians from other wikipedias. I might even develop it into a fuller directory organised by country for general missing articles. See User:Dr. Blofeld/Missing politicians for starters. Sweden I've noticed is greatly in need of addressing. You're fully welcome to add any politicians to the list. Also missing politicians from government sites around the world to be started need adding. Count Blofeld 15:50, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you could help list the parliamentarians from various sites such as islands like that and any others I will copy the categories from other wikipedias. I currently stubbing some Finnish senators of the 19th century. The biggest thing we can do is transwikiying on any subject. I wish I had more power within Wiki where my ideas would actually be listened to and actually be put into practice. It is quite frustrating to propose things like WikiAtlas and WIkiTranslation and just get ignored by the people that matter in Wikimedia (meaning the ones who have the power to authorise new wikis and make crucial decisions in Wikimedia) and only a few people comment and never anything done about it. There are some seriously important tools we could be using on wikipedia to dramatically improve the content of this encyclopedia but very few seem to care about it. Count Blofeld 16:42, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've created Template:Expand Finland. This could probably be created for most of the wikipedias that articles will started from and require expanding Count Blofeld 17:22, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a series of templates specifically designed to use when stubbing articles from another wikipedia which needs translating. See Category:Expand by language wikipedia templates. What do you think? The idea is that we compare categories with other wikipedias and stub the articles in those categories which are not on english wikipedia and tag them to be part of the process of expansion. For example compare Category:Lithuanian writers with Lithuanian wikipedia. We generate lists on here copying the categories and then stub the articles with the {Expand Lithuanian} tag at the top. If we can work on the birth/death dates and a basic fact it will be acceptable. Count Blofeld 18:41, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great. Remember though you don't need to add Template:Expand Italy you should just use {{Expand Italy}} . unfortunately though we may attract unwanted speedy deletion requests along the way. Hopefully the better editors will understand the transwikying effort that it being done and let them be. If any of them hit the AFD we know they can be quickly be expanded so shouldn't be a problem. Just ignore those who disapprove I say Count Blofeld 10:30, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK as long as you are sure that potential information translated from wikipedias like Chinese is a reliable one. I would have done one for Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malay too but I wasn't convinced that the information could be translated. Count Blofeld 11:47, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well it depends on the likelihood of somebody being able to translate it. 'Fraid I don't know too many people who speak Sardinian. Making a Vietnam, Indonesian and Malay one would probably be OK though. Count Blofeld 20:26, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I had no idea the Sardinian wiki existed. Local knowledge is likely to be very useful. If there are over 50 articles to translate create it. If not, perhaps when you stub a article leave a hat note instead that it needs translating. Count Blofeld 20:47, 24 November 2008 (UTC) Catalan and Maori may also contain something useful. WHat we can do it publicise it to the relative wikiprojects and wikirpoject translation so if there are translators they will have a specific work list to work on. Count Blofeld 20:53, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tagalog and Filipino probably have over 50,000. Be careful though if some of the templates aren't used for some time Idon't want somebody sniffing at them and starting an unwanted TFD. We'll need to create articles from each of them so get the categories up and running. Count Blofeld 21:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Now we need to create the categories and apply Category:Translation needed to categories like Category:Italian articles needing translation

Amazing. I create one Lithuanian stub the other day with the tag. Check out! Expanded already! If we could get people involved like this and put the stubs out there it massively increases the chances of them being translated. We'll have to build up the translation scheme though and get more people involved with it. Count Blofeld 21:33, 24 November 2008 (UTC) What we can do is to be a little sneaky and try to build a sort of translation team together. As categories and articles are created we can notify people like User talk:Renata3 and aks them to spread the word, contact the relative wikipedias and editors who are categorised as speaking the language and request them to participate. So in effect we will achieve the first stage of our plan. We sure need a bot or two to be transwikiying content though Count Blofeld 21:57, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK I;ve created User:AlbertHerring/Translation. Take it in your own time. Count Blofeld 22:19, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. Probably best though to remove the pop cat tag once the categories have articles in them as the idea of course is that the articles are all translated!! 22:40, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Good idea. You seem though to be in and out like a yoyo at the moment though!! Count Blofeld 19:12, 25 November 2008 (UTC) For that example I don't think there is enough to include the tag. If the content is lacking on the other wikipedia, it can't really require translation from another wikipedia as there is nothing there to compliment it!! The tags were intended for articles which at least have a paragraph or two to translate and in examples where the content on another wikipedia is often better than elesewhere on the web and no information is available in English. I didn't start some of the ALbanian politicians because the articles were undeveloped or of dubious notability. However I believe that articles is only undeveloped because it is Creole not because it isn't notable. If you come across these I'd only place the reference at the bottom and try to find an external links to avoid anybody trying to delete it. Hopefully some will have aenough content to translate. Thats a tough one you picked there. The best bet with Haitian writers would probably be here Count Blofeld 21:19, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, not as easy to do though with the lesser wikipedias. Best to find the articles which have the most content. I don't know how we are going to do ones like Korea and Japan or even Bulgaria/Russian though as the lettering system is different! Count Blofeld 21:26, 25 November 2008 (UTC) Yes thats a shame. I have tried to create some articles on Ukraine and Belarus before too but had to abandon it because it is not latinised but in Cyrillic. At least many of the Baltic countries and eastern europe can be accessed. P.S I've expanded Abdou Baco. Remember though that translation from another wikipedia should only really be done if it equals/exceeds the best content elsewhere on the web or has at least some resource. If better sources can be used it is probably better that more rleiable sources are used. But a lot of content on other wikipedias is of a correct and half decent standard and this is the content we want to extract first. IN a nutshell. Imagine some trigger happy editor came across a new stub and tried to speedy it. Ideally we want to say no and then have an article which can be quickly translated which is clearly resoueful to silence them. Count Blofeld 21:35, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep if the content is devoid but there is an external link which looks the norm and illustrates some notability in whatever language just include an external links instead. I've eaten too much dark I mean dark Swiss chocolate today I feel a bit sick now LOL I'll continue with those politicians tomorrow. I was going to ask Fritz use his bot to help me create a directory of missing articles by country/language but we'll see 21:41, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Be careful though, ELiasson for example. Remember that many of the other wikipedias are more open often resulting in amateur people who are promoting themsevles getting onto wikipedia and may need source/notability checking. This would indicate he is more of an amateur photographer and a narrow claim to notability. Count Blofeld 22:28, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't easy at times it can be difficult with transwikiying from smaller wikipedias espcially when people who don't bother to check notability properly on artists like this start adding notability tags to subjects they know nothing about!! But you are doing very well, sorry I didn't mean to discourage you but I know that some wikipedias from experience, most of all Romanian and Slovenian wiki there are some people with articles on there who are students or amateur writers/painters who are often barely notable within their own countries! They ar enot always easy to identify but usually a google /external link check will show something to make a decision on them. What did you mean BTW about adding a seantor template? I thought we already created one LOL! Count Blofeld 22:41, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah duhhh. That makes sense! Hehe. Good idea although I somehow doubt we'll have difficulty finding articles to translate! I'd estimate that between French, German, Spanish and Polish wiki there must be over a million articles to translate. Count Blofeld 11:29, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thats odd I meant Italian and French wikis in particular not to mention Dutch too Count Blofeld 14:11, 26 November 2008 (UTC) Doesn't seem that long ago that I had that many. Somehow I passed the 200,000 mark yesterday, pretty freaky. The funny thing is that I look the total opposite from the stereotypical geek that people commonly think of who edits wikipedia heavily. Most people would probably think I spend more time in a gym and lifting weights than looking at a screen. I'd stand out like a saw thumb here LOL. Just goes to show you don't have to look like Penfold from Dangermouse to have a brain and enjoy wikipedia. Count Blofeld 15:14, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes there is always that myth about geeks and specs isn't there as if somehow being more intelligent somehow affects your eyesight LOL. Luckily I only need specs for corrective vision when driving but I almost always wear prescription sunglasses instead to avoid doing so. Yes I'm from southern Wales but really know very little Welsh. I've always felt more English than Welsh perhaps thats due to my grandad being a Londoner and most of my family being English. I'd feel more patriotic watching an England World Cup Football match than I would watching the Welsh team play. It was compulsory to learn in school from primary school onwards but Welsh was the only subject where I got rather mediocre C grade. I always thought it was pretty pointless in learning it even though most of the road signs and public signs around here as with anywhere in Wales are almost always in both English and Welsh. So on the roads you;d see Stop! and then Arad! underneath it. All I can remember is "Rydw I mynd I Ysgol Gyfun y Bechgyn y Barri" which means "I attend Barry COmprehensive School"! I know a fair few odd words but would look as puzzled as you would if you heard somebody speaking it. One of our terrestrial channels in S4C and I occasionally see programmes like Pobl y Cwm on it and wonder what the frank they are saying. My neighbors are Welsh, the guy is from Maesteg and I often find myself talking in an exaggerated welsh accent to myself to mimic them when they are outside LOL. Although there are some Welsh speakers in my area we are the least welsh speaking part of Wales overall so anybody who speaks it or has a strong welsh accent tends to really stand out. I wouldn't bother creating a welsh tag, most people in Wales speak english, there is only likely to be information on the odd welsh village perhaps in an obscure part of Wales which has anything to offer. Count Blofeld 15:52, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Anderson happens to be my surname. I've traced one side of my family back to Sweden. For many centuries my family lived in Scotland were the name was obviously anglicized from Andersson. The Vikings landed on the north coast of Scotland from Scandinavia. The other side I am of Jewish and French Hugenot descent. Yes the amount of Americans who are of ENglish and Irish descent is enomrous. I often notice there are also a huge number of German Americans. Count Blofeld 16:17, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes thats exactly how I thought the main distribution was. But in terms of a vast proportion of Americans being only a few generations earlier English/Irish this is exactly why when I speak to an American I tend to speak to them, whether its you or editor of the wiki as I would somebody from over here. Its the same with Australians. Often people potray this kind of rivalry which are often the subject of jokes particularly sports, but in reality a vast proportion of Americans and Australians are only a few generations away British. Culturally though some of the differences can really be quite extreme. Count Blofeld 16:43, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep I hate cricket too! SO boring! I like baseball and basketball but never understood American Football (or Aussie Rules either)!! I am surprised however on that map how many German Americans there are. I mean I knew they made up tbe largest origin but I didn't quite realise it was a substantial as that. Count Blofeld 16:48, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That probably accounts for why you are polite, just kidding. Well later I have the Finnish geo stubs to sort from the back log I have still from October. Probably AWB is not suitable for that as it involves removing {{Finland-geo-stub} and replacing it with {EasternFinland-geo-stub} etc. Perhaps you could use it to create articles, or fill some more of the empty new categories for translation up Count Blofeld 17:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC) A while ago I created Template:São Paulo highways. Could stub them using AWB and use the Expand Portuguese tag Count Blofeld 17:14, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Albert I have a cleanup task to do at present. I wondered if you could help me. Is it possible to use AWB to move the year template from the top of articles to the bottom (nestled above the cinema of templates) as here? I've reached 1944 so far. Count Blofeld 18:58, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks I'll do up to 1949 then. Count Blofeld 19:07, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK to start Argentine films of 1950 later then. See Argentine films of 1949 for instance that the moved down template nestles on top at the bottom. Right I'm off out for a bit now. I'll return in about an hour or two and get on with sorting out Finland geo articles. Count Blofeld 19:17, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Albert. I still need to do the other countries too. See Template:1970 films for instance, each of the countries need doing like Argentina. I was going through a year at a time but I see you did all of Argentina first! Count Blofeld 15:54, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK I've done Bollywood as I had to remove an extra template anyway. Reckon you can do the rest within a few days? Count Blofeld 18:58, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great. I'll be off now, see you later perhaps Count Blofeld 19:01, 27 November 2008 (UTC) Some of the coolest names of films I've ever seen The Whore and the Whale, Adios Gringo and A Coffin for the Sheriff Count Blofeld 22:03, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice. Heres some Andorran politicians to add too: User:Dr. Blofeld/Missing politicians#Andorra Count Blofeld 22:21, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've reached 1970. Looks like I'll be finishing moving the templates myself (after all I put them there!) Count Blofeld 15:04, 28 November 2008 (UTC) Ah I've reached 1974 anyway and at least Bollywood, South Korea and Argentina have all been done anyway. I doubt though I'll have the patience to finish it all manually today! Hey I've just proposed Botanist stub templates by country. If needs be I'll probably end up creating a load of new stubs on botanists to even up the coverage. Oh there is also Category:Dams in Japan 99% which I started which need the {Expand Japanese} tmepl added to the top. Take it easy though if you arne't up to it in the next few days, and happy Thanksgiving. I wish we had that in the UK! Count Blofeld 16:11, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have proposed it here. Before we start though we'll need to to do a cat scan to check how many stubs we currently have from each country. Also before we start we'd probably best created the templates first to save going back and re stub sorting later. I think I'll do some from my politicians list now I'm a bit tired of films for the time being! Count Blofeld 16:43, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh. I've created Template:Mayors of Ljubljana but the problem is that half of them are not "Slovenes" they were mayors of Ljubljana under the Holy Roman Empire and most of the earlier ones were Austrian, German or Prussian. Do you think it is acceptable to state they were a Slovenian politician or Politician in Slovenia? Count Blofeld 18:37, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm I'm not so sure. They are solid German names which gives me the impression they were only sent to Ljubljana from modern day Germany/Austria under central Holy Roman command. This wouldn't make them Slovene in ethnicity or origin or even Slovenian. But I'll reword it and keep the category as Slovenian perhaps create one "Politicians of the Holy Roman Empire"? Count Blofeld 18:44, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I really need you to use AWB to add {Expand Japanese} to the articles in Category:Dams in Japan. Please can you help? I need to replace the notes at the top Count Blofeld 21:26, 29 November 2008 (UTC) In your own time. I wish I could figure out how to use AWB as naturally I could do it myself Count Blofeld 21:39, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The thing is I;ve never been good at reading manuals or instruction guides. If somebody showed me I'm sure it would assist me greatly. I'd be able to use it for rather more evil purposes and an evil number of edit/articles Count Blofeld 22:30, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I lokoed at the instructions before but somebody had writtne it in computer techno gobbledy gook and I really get deterred whenever I see any computer coding whatsoever! Don't mind infoboxes and coding there but whenever I see the babble like in my monobook my bald head starts palpitating. Where do I sign up? Count Blofeld 22:35, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Category:Costa Rican politicians definately needs adding {Expand Spanish} to. I stubbed them, and as yet haven't got around to translating them Count Blofeld 10:32, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Amazing I see you've already read my mind and done them. The only thing though is that you've added them with apostrophes and a : before the template so the box doesn't show properly see here for instance. Ah you;ve added the apostrophes and : to these too. It somehow affects the template by doing so. Count Blofeld 10:35, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow for once a new article Erast Parmasto is better than the other language wiki! Count Blofeld 16:23, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No borders on them, well there aren't on my computer anyway. Don't worry about it, thats the least important of things, but try to remove the : and apostrophes around it when you come to do more at a later date! Shortly I'll be creating a list of 950 odd Polish painters, 700 are missing. I thought you might be interested Count Blofeld 16:42, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've been approved for AWB anyway. Perhaps you could show me the ropes sometime Count Blofeld 16:45, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great. Thanks. On second thoughts I think I'll give the directory idea a miss, its too head busting to think and tryt o take all that on Count Blofeld 17:56, 30 November 2008 (UTC) Yep. Could we finish Template:Castles in Albania first? Nearly done Count Blofeld 18:52, 30 November 2008 (UTC) OK done! Count Blofeld 19:10, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that the WikiProject Ships practice for present-day commercial ships is to not display a large flag at the top of the infobox, which is why the code for commercial ships at template:Infobox Ship Begin specifically omits those fields. This practice is in line with the Manual of Style, which cautions not to emphasize nationality without good reason. The field for displaying the flag at the top of the infobox is primarilly intended for military ships, not commercial ships. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 19:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid "may be used freely for any educational or scholarly purpose" is not free. To count as free, material must be usable by anyone, for any reason, including commercial use and modification. J Milburn (talk) 19:11, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there, I am doing New Page Patrol and I am watching your parade of new French-related articles coming online. I just wanted to thank you for bringing these to the project -- keep up the great work! Ecoleetage (talk) 20:45, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AWB[edit]

I am using modern at present. I generally alternate between cologne and modern every weeks. Count Blofeld 19:13, 30 November 2008 (UTC) Arggh, bad timing I actually have something to do off the computer in a minute. Looks like you'll have to show me later or tomorrow if you can. But remember I am clueless about it, I don't even know how you "open it". Could you explain from scratch, as if I was a three year old newbie LOL? I need to know exactly where I go from the start and what steps to make. I'll return later, in an hour or two if I can. hopefully I will be a little more filled in on it by then. See ya Count Blofeld 19:21, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I mean I haven't downloaded anything. I am completely unfamilar with it! Count Blofeld 19:23, 30 November 2008 (UTC) If you could explain how to download it and the first few stages I'll try to do it when I return. Hasta luego. Count Blofeld 19:24, 30 November 2008 (UTC) OK I'm back. Those instructions look great. One thing though I tried logging in and it didn't work. DO I have to create a seperate account on there? Count Blofeld 20:30, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See here. Which one do I select? Count Blofeld 20:41, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right it looks as though I have it saved in my ebooks. There are numerous options now such as manager, login each. What do I do now? Count Blofeld 20:46, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right the options now are AWB, AWB updater, extras, plugins, unit, usage, wiki fuction, auto wiki. The problem is that whenever I try to open one it says windows cannot open this film because it is "suspicious of where it came from" Count Blofeld 21:05, 30 November 2008 (UTC) you can select "Release" and using extraction wizard download them to a desired destination. What to I choose? Count Blofeld 21:14, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't work. I already have it saved. But you try to open any one of the files and it says "Windows does not recognize this file type". I wonder if its to do with the other programme you have to have. Count Blofeld 21:20, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You said about the File menu, and click on "Profiles". It should come up empty; click on the "Add" button and follow the instructions. Where is the file menu? Count Blofeld 21:30, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think I'll give it a miss, I can't open any of the files because my windows browser won't permit it. I'll have to stick to normal editing. Anyway I;ve found this link. Perhaps you should add some external links to the articles. Have you considered creating a template like the Senate? Count Blofeld 21:43, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I will be drawing up the directory but it is a daunting prospect. There will be zillions of red links to fill. Could really use a hand with the Swedish politicians though Count Blofeld 22:19, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of Polish painters. Count Blofeld 22:51, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're scaring me with the mind reading. First Costa Rica now the talk pages. How did ya know I was going to ask? Count Blofeld 10:37, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Clever. Eesh you're not going to like this. See the cat errors on Pierre Lequiller, Pierre Lasbordes etc."Lequiller, Pierre deaths" Count Blofeld 14:17, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the looks of it those were the only two. The first one I looked at I caught the error! Another cooincidence. Looks like you;ve done most of them correctly. Good job. With over 1100 stubs I've even proposed new French pol templates by party! Count Blofeld 14:32, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any help you can give with starting the painters from User:Dr. Blofeld/Poland would be much appreciated. Count Blofeld 14:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was thinking about adding a little explanantion to our language banners like Template:Expand Polish. What do you think? Just thought it needed asserting and might prompt people to either help or understand more about why we are creating them. Let me know Count Blofeld 16:13, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would have said "This article was generated" but we also need to use the tags to go on existing articles which need translating even on major cities etc. So as part of would seem to cover both. I can apply it to all the templates if you are happy with it. I think it still looks professional, even more so than before actually as it indicates that a coordinated scheme is underway and wikipedia is planning its content. Count Blofeld 16:18, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed my Dear Mr. Watson Count Blofeld 16:21, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK , remember to include the line break between the sentences Count Blofeld 16:23, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All done. Looks great Count Blofeld 16:34, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Try working from english wikipedia e.g Category:Tongan politicians and checking out the tongan equivalent. thats how you know what they are! Urgh actually that won't work as they haven't got proper organized categories. Count Blofeld 16:40, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another useful Tongan link here. The articles in this category can be automatically translated into English. Shame this kind of thing doesn't exist all over. Count Blofeld 16:46, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. Bit of a nightmare these small wikipedias. Count Blofeld 16:49, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can imagine. This is why I'm about to create a Faroese tag Count Blofeld 17:06, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just thought I'd drop a quick line to say "Nice stuff", as I patrol "New pages". They're obviously just little stubs, but it's great to see these gaps in en.wp being filled. -- Zanimum (talk) 17:22, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly. Queens of Wallis and Futuna are a particularly cool subject. Count Blofeld 17:36, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup Hawaii, Kauai and Maui in particular were the most amazing places I've ever been. There is such an air of spirituality about the place. An amazing culture and people. I would love to live in Hawaii. I'm not surprised actors like Pierce Brosnan and that live there. I still wear the sharks tooth surfer necklace I bought when over there. I will go back agian somebody and also see Tahiti which looks out of this world (financially too). Never been to places like Tonga or Fiji although my mother's uncle, CommissionerWesley Harris (yes he's bald too!) who worked in in both places for a few years. My parents went to Fiji a year or two ago and loved it too. Check out the images of some of the Gambier Islands I added. UNbelievable. Count Blofeld 17:49, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. My only claim historically is that I have a great-great-great etc grandfather who was part of Nelson's crew. On my dads side I come from a family of sailors beack generations so more than likely others served on varios expeditions but the one who served under Nelson is the only I know of. My grandad was also a sailor in the Royal Navy and physical trainer on board. I've always loved the water too, I've seen a trip advertised where you can cross the Pacific old style in a tall ship and visit the Pacific Islands like they would have in James Cook's era. That would be awesome. Count Blofeld 17:58, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice! Count Blofeld 11:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC) You may find this link useful in future. Search for an image and it can be uploaded. Count Blofeld 15:30, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Check out Image:MawganPorthsunset.jpg I just uploaded. I used to go there on holiday and surf as a kid. Fond memories of Mawgan Porth. Count Blofeld 15:48, 2 December 2008 (UTC) I only just found out that you can serve images on flickr by license. No more faffing about with finding images. I just found quality images of Michelle Pfeiffer and Clint Eastwood. We could probably find tons of images for places in France and Italy too. If you have any requests let me know. I'm kinda like a kid who won't read books without pictures! Count Blofeld 16:25, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE!!! There are like freely licensed 10,000,000 images which can be uploaded from flickr into the commons. The potential for development is mind blowing. If we could combine the all amazing images at flickr with wikipedia it would be amazing. I've been uploading lots of images today but it takes ages. There shuould be a bot transferring creative commons content into the wikipedia commons. Here s a stunning image of Phnom Kulen (which I started only weeks ago) Count Blofeld 22:32, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No this is what I mean it is a licensing filter. So ANY image that comes up in a search you can upload, no worrying about whether it can be used or nor unless it looks like a copyvio of a major movie star or something, but please upload it to the commons. If you copy an image I uploaded yesterday and follow that format you can't go wrong. Count Blofeld 09:09, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm building the bones to Wikipedia:WikiProject Bulgaria/Municipal templates at the moment. The first one I did was Template:Smolyan. If we can get all of Bulgaria covered this way. I'm going to post all of WP:Bulgaria now to get some people working on it. Count Blofeld 14:34, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A dwelling at the side of the lake

Hey amigo how are you? I'm taking it easy today. I like half the people in this country feel all fluey today. Its freezing and horrid here at the moment! Yesterday I had a crazy template creating day, 259 in total for Bulgaria! Count Blofeld 16:13, 4 December 2008 (UTC) Good idea. I was wondering about Flemish too which you'd think would be quite developed. Count Blofeld 18:36, 4 December 2008 (UTC) I tell you what its a nightmare trying the find free images of models or female tv presenters. Most of the images seem to be from modelling agencies or the ones that aren't seem to be highly prized and aren't available under 2.0. I've been trying hard to find a free image of Shania Twain for yonks but there is nothing. The image we have at present is awful and she looks stunning in most photos. Count Blofeld 21:02, 4 December 2008 (UTC) Awesome. The image of Kelly Brook I cropped from a billboard is OK to use! Image:KellyBrook3.jpg. So hot! Former girlfriend of Jason Statham. Count Blofeld 21:42, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Macedonian in particular is important as I believe there are a number of Macedonians on here. The others may have some use for local subjects. Been out doing some Christmas shopping today, my head feels numb though, should be in bed. Count Blofeld 18:06, 5 December 2008 (UTC) Plenty of tea and painkillers will keep me going another few hours I hope. Perhaps those new tags could be adminstered to som existing articles which need translation Count Blofeld 19:29, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some Cambodian images. Nice? Count Blofeld 22:43, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey mind reader thats a very good idea. However you do realise they are like 36,000 communes don't you? Probably 35,000 of them would need the tag. Are you willing to double your edit count? I had aimed at getting back on the french communes once Nepal was finished but was hoping a bot could help. Seems not. Count Blofeld 11:48, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. But by the looks of it Corsican wiki doesn't look as if it has any content to translate! Perhaps just use it for the ones where there is some content in Corsican. Yes French communes needs a massive amount of work as does, well practically everywhere else on smaller towns and villages. I'd imagine though it would take you a while to tag 35,000 but if you are up for it let AWB by your baby. I would up the rate that you apply them though 2 a minute is very slow i'd be aiming for a 5 a minute at the least Count Blofeld 16:02, 6 December 2008 (UTC) You may want to use Wikipedia:WikiProject French communes/Status in doing so. Count Blofeld 17:13, 6 December 2008 (UTC) OK I've just created Tagalog and Cebuano tags for Philippines. 20,000 and 35,000 articles respectively. Count Blofeld 17:42, 6 December 2008 (UTC) Always good to know when articles you create develop. Mm the thing is most of the Filipino articles I've looked at are better in english. I've just been browsing Communes of the Charente department. Most of the articles seem to be well developed in particular on French wiki for that department. Could you AWB tag them all? Count Blofeld 18:39, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Here for instance. I love the look of some of the places in France. Count Blofeld 18:41, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow that 1800 articles needing translation so far. I'd imagine its actually nearer 200,000. Hey I've created Template:Expand Quechua as I've noticed some good content on Incan/Andes subjects. I'm still trying to play the Andean flute that my parents bought me from the summer! It has one of those cool colorful Andean quilted cases. Count Blofeld 22:15, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I was wondering if you could help me dab the blue links on User:Dr. Blofeld/Nepal. This is all I;ve got left to do with nepal. However I am encountering page problems with the Internet so whereas before I could save preview and keep clikcing back now every time I do so it says "Page expired" meaning than every link I change has to be saved one at a time, playing havic with page histories! Even with Nepal now I can't start them in one as I used to but have to save first and then correct. Could you help me dab the remaining ones in this list. Once done, I can insert them straight into the articles and templates and then plough through them completing Nepal Doktor Blof. 14:51, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fires. What'd ya mean? What do you think of this book as a Christmas present for my dad? Doktor Blof. 15:05, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes he is fascinated by Polynesia and the Pacific. He loved reading novels like Coral Island as a kid and is still fascinated with it. He started surfing back in 1969 because of the Polynesians! In my house we have like a whole library of surfer magazines and journals since the 1960s! I just bought that book a minute ago as I think he'll like it. Doktor Blof. 15:15, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Funnily enough my mother is the complete opposite and the easiest to buy for ever! She is not a materialistic person (unlike my father, my sister and myself who like to collect DVDs, CDs, travel books etc) and she is always content with Marks and Spencer vouchers! The Bald One White cat 15:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC) Well M+S is kinda like a British Macey's although not as big! I used to work in its flagship store from aged 16-24 in Cardiff and it is supposed to be one of the biggest stores. Huge I think it was something like 1.65 km to walk around the entire car park and site. However unlike Maceys it is all on one floor (except the staff cafe and admin rooms). Maceys in NYC was unbelievably huge. In thinking about it I quite miss all those discounts I used to get, especially with the food waste after hours. The prawn and mayo or crab sandwiches and well all of the food is divine!! The Bald One White cat 15:40, 8 December 2008 (UTC) Good idea although France should keep you busy for a while! The Bald One White cat 15:47, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, I skipped that originally because of the Cyrillic The Bald One White cat 16:57, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Basically the blue links need to be checked and red linked by dabbing where applies. There is only likely to be one or two maximum that are actually correct links at present. If they don't point to the relative article or poit to a place in another area of Nepal they need dabbing. E.g if you look at Parsa District on User:Dr. Blofeld/Nepal Jitpur was once linked in blue. Now click this and you'll see I have sorted it to a dab as there is another place with that name to Jitpur, Narayani. I had to move Jitpur to Jitpur, Mechi. Then I fixed the link on my sorting page to red so the right article is ready for starting. Do you understand? If you like take a few districts from Dr. Blofeld/Nepal and sort them on one of your work pages if you want to help. I can then copy and paste and add them to the article/infoboxes later then and make a big effort to ge tthem done within a few days. The Bald One White cat 17:04, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd noticed. There should be somethign in Italian on those too. If you are helping with the dabbing could you take half of them and dab them in your workspace to avoid edit conficts! Cheers The Bald One White cat 17:16, 8 December 2008 (UTC) Yes thats right. If there is an existing page on a different topic which looks notable enough to constitute that name then leave a hat note at the top of the page The Bald One White cat 17:23, 8 December 2008 (UTC) Thanks amigo, making good progress only a few more to do. The Bald One White cat 19:03, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Out of curiosity what do most people think of people like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan in the states. The same way I feel about talentless people like Victoria Beckham who garner global acclaim? The sort of people that deluded teenage girls and even young women aspire to be and buy glossy magazines and buy shoddy records of but are loathed by most decent people in the country? The Bald One White cat 22:01, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I was actually thinking about Paris in particular. Its just I saw images of her drinking and smoking at a party like a grown up 28 year old women does ya know and was just thinking how many teenage girls idolise her. Some role model huh? Victoria Beckham and Paris Hilton have to be the most self centred people I've ever seen. They seme to be amongst the most successful and obviously have the least talent. The way Victoria prances about with Tom Cruise and that, you;d think she'd be a highly acclaimed actress or something. Without David Beckham she'd probably now be working stacking shelves in Lidl or something. But then again shes extremely manipulative so would probably be head of the store instead.

Yes that makes Paris Hilton even worse. A spoiled brat who is famous for being famous. I guess at least Victoria did have a lot of success with the Spice Girls even if she admittedly couldn't sing and fizzled out. To me it seems America now accepts her as this huge celebrity. Is this true? The Bald One White cat 22:12, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Høst[edit]

Goodness me, you are quick on the draw. You managed to delete a whole section of the continuing article through an editing conflict. I had to rewrite the whole thing. In future, could you give those preparing new articles at least an hour or so to continue their work. Anyway, I'm glad someone was looking at this. Perhaps you would also be interested in my attempt at Art of Denmark and a number of other articles on Danish painters over the past couple of days.- Ipigott (talk) 15:43, 10 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

French translations - politicians[edit]

Congratulations on your recent translation of a vast number of pages from the French Wikipedia. Unfortunately, when it comes to politicians you have made several errors which you may wish to put right.

The French Wikipedia says of Jean-Paul Bacquet that "Il fait partie du groupe socialiste." So he's a member of the Socialist party. You have said he is a member of the Socialiste, radical, citoyen et divers gauche which is not a party but a parliamentary grouping of several parties. You must have taken that from the infobox. I have corrected this point, but I suspect you have done the same in a large number of other articles.

Similarly, of Marie-Hélène Amiable, you have written that "she represents the Hauts-de-Seine department and is a member of the Gauche démocrate et républicaine.". No she doesn't, and isn't. She represents only the 11th constituency of the Hauts-de-Seine department - there are 13 of them. She is a member of the Communist Party. Looks like you have made a similar mistake and have a lot of correcting to do. (I've also put this article right.) Emeraude (talk) 12:50, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also fairly busy here, but will make some corrections when I have the time to save you a bit of effort. Small world though. Here I am living in UK and my niece is also a "semi-recent graduate of the College of William and Mary"! Emeraude (talk) 09:14, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eguilles translation - issue with references[edit]

Hello. I think you added a template to the Eguilles page which says it should be expanded from the French translation. I disagree because the French page does not have much referenced info. The end point is a lack of scientific valence.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:45, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You actually did that for lots of villages. The same problem goes down.Zigzig20s (talk) 17:46, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. I could write false info on the French pages and then they would be translated? That makes no critical sense.Zigzig20s (talk) 20:45, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can I just say to Zig that the template is intended for articles which have resourceful content (referenced if possible) on other wikipedias. It is intended to be applied to those articles which are shockingly brief in comparison and is only intended as a prelimanary step. It is also intended for articles where it is difficult to obtain reliable references in abundance in English. At the end of the day we want fully developed articles with tons of reliable references but applying expand tags to the articles which are grossly inadequate compared to other languages is a constructivr step to make and therefore you should not be criticising all of it. Perhaps the tags needn't be applied to articles which are equally as short or unreferenced on other wikipedias but the overall idea is that we get a lot of resourceful content missing on here into English. Might I point out that for Eguilles we should be using a primary source Official website which has information in English on it first.. Wikipedia is not a reliable source and to expand articles we should be using primary sources from elsewhere as much as possible but text translated from French wikipedia particularly if referenced is not a bad thing even if not final. The Bald One White cat 21:10, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The template seems relatively useless. Anyone can go to the French page and then translate it if they want to. However, as I said before, if the French page is not referenced, that is absolutely useless. Let us use official website and published books (from GoogleBooks), but I know through experience that the French Wikipedia very often lacks references and is therefore useless. Those pages are a work in progress and anyone can add referenced info. I would suggest deleting unreferenced info from the French Wikipedia.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:38, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the encouragement! "French Wikipedia very often lacks references and is therefore useless". That has to be one of the most arrogant, small minded comments I've ever seen on here. A lot of content I have transferred from French wikipedia clearly states the sources it used. Sure some of the other wikipedias don't regard references as highly as us but I think your repsonse here Zig is completely ignorant of how much resourceful and sourced content actually exists on other wikipedia. By saying that all unreferenced content should be completely ignored and is rendered useless in effect half of English wikipedia as it rendered useless in your view when a lot of information we have is accurate but just needs citations. Some of the wikipedias, German and Dutch in particular have higher standards than us and to dismiss the great efforts we are making to transfer good content from a wide range of wikipedias to improve coverage is not helping. The Bald One White cat 14:31, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well sure the tags are intended for articles which have resourceful, referenced if possible content from other wikipedias compared to one liners or grossly under developed articles on here, but the ignorance towards other wikipedias I see commonly from other editors on here really is awful. It is such a narrow minded way of looking at the world, as if "foreign" editors only produce rubbish and completely inaccurate text. Why they think that editors in different languages don't equally want to produce an encyclopedia of the highest quality beats me. I;ve checked out many articles I've trannslated from other wikipedias and I'm telling you to date in checking they've been completely accurate. So basically I should now delete the entire Tenerife article I translated from a stub because it is from another wikipedia. The Bald One White cat 15:35, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey don't let it get you down. I feel that Editor of the wiki is feeling a little like that at the moment and I don't blame him as he has had a gutful over his FAs but don't let what anybody says stop you from creating new articles!!. Me personally I've never been happy with the treatment I've got at WP:Films from a number of its editors but if I leave that project and continue doing things in a way I feel comfortable with I can just stay away from them and continue producing content whether they like me or my work or not. I'm gradually learning that spending time in any wikipedia general discussion turns out to be a waste of time so I'm trying to ignore any discussions as much as possible from now on and try to focus on articles only and discussing things with editors who are worthwhile and a pleasure to talk to. The Bald One White cat 16:10, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey I wonder if you can tell which part of the Michael Crichton article has been given the bald treatment. I can't believe how absolutely crap the article was and still is for the most part. It was missing the vital details on, well his books. The Bald One White cat 11:16, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Well when he died and I saw the state of the article I had it in mind to develop it. However I had to wait until the editing frenzy died down after his death. I was very surpised nobody had tried to develop it afterwards. Really wikipedia should draw up a list of the top 1000 articles which receive the most hits and try to ensure they are all at least GA standard I think. I daresay there will be some pathetic entries in there like penis size and Paris Hilton but in terms of the amount of people seeing them I think it would be good to try to match up page views with quality. Often though the articles which get more hits are the better articles anyway but I still think that would be a good idea. The Bald One White cat 14:43, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well , at least some people find us useful for something I guess. I know users like Epbr123 or whatever his name is think this is Pornopedia. After all though, Sylvia Saint was partly responsible for its creation, funnily enough! 14:49, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes LOL the guideline to "starlet" notability on here is quite amusing I think. I think its something like 150 films. Alexis Silva, who I've always thought would be considered a notable "actress", apparently though is not considered notable probably because shes only been in 145 "films", so her article was deleted. Hehe The Bald One White cat 14:54, 18 December 2008 (UTC) Great. Just imagine though if I had AWB on my side. User:Rjwilmsi uses AWB for crazily long periods and as a result now near something like 250,000 edits. I doubt like you though if he has made many quality edits with writing like you. I'm not exactly what you;d call a biblical scholar, but I do know that God or Jesus taught people to love and respect each other and to forgive people (from what the bible says). From what I saw all that guy preaches is hatred of most of "Gods children". I thought that the picketing at funerals of soldiers was atrocious. No compassion, no respect for other peoples feelings, really terrible. How somebody thinks he can judge the human race like that. A the bull that those girls withint the "church" have been taught. Unbelievable. Seems to be a lot of that sort of cult stuff in the mid west like Utah and Kansas. And the gross ignorance that every in Sweden loves "fags". The Bald One White cat 16:17, 19 December 2008 (UTC) Yup I've just started Franziska Ellmenreich. I clicked on 1870 and found her! I dare say there are some horrific Nazi period images that were too brutal to make public though. I heard they have several million images but 100,000 is still huge. Just imagine every country followed suite. Yes my sister said there "nothing in Kansas". You could drive for miles and see very few people. She said there wasn't much to see at all. Then again its like that in south-eastern California in the desert around Joshua Tree, she said there were no cars on the road! The Bald One White cat 16:30, 19 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I hated German lessons at school. I always found it quite a harsh language compared to the beautiful French, Spanish and Italian. The teachers would select half the pupils in the year to learn French and the other half German. Unfortunately I was picked to learn German from 7th grade (aged 11) through until 16. Can't say I remember much except Das ist sehr gut ja (a mickey take of a German porn impression meaning That is very good, yes yes) and a few odd words. Das ist mein auto. Is there any chance you could copy and paste the Village of.. lists by districts of each region so I can format them into the templates? Catalan[edit]

Hi! Could you please advise why you have tagged multiple Spanish article to get the Catalonian versions translated to English and replace them as opposed to the 'Spanish' articles? I ask as I have had some e-mails and phone calls from friends resident in the Valencian region, who know I edit on Wikipedia. They have spotted the tags on the El Campello, Denia, Aspe and Calpe articles, to name but a few. As a part-time resident there I am aware that there are two languages used in the area and not all agree on which they should be; ie Spanish and Catalan, the later of which is rarely used and when it is it's spoken in the local Valencian dialect. Those who have emailed are concerned that there may be an element of POV pushing for the Catalonian language over the main National 'Spanish' language. This is made more difficult by the fact there are several regional dialects of 'Catalonian'. Personally I struggle with Spanish, but I am concerned that the translation project may give rise to an element of edit warring on the English WP! In order to appease some of the concerns of those who e-mailed I have 'temporarily' removed the tags from those articles. Richard Harvey (talk) 11:05, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks for the fast reply! having contacted some of those who called me they feel that the chances of getting the Catalonian versions translated are considerably less than the Spanish ones, due mostly to the fact few people are capable of doing so. However as most of those you have tagged are stub articles and, as mentioned below by Ezhiki, should not be tagged in this way, perhaps you should first review the ones you have tagged and delete the language tags from those that are still stubs! Expand requests[edit]

Hi, Albert! Please do not add expand tags to articles marked as stubs; {{expand}}'s documentation actually explicitly mentions that. I've reverted some of the additions you've made so far. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:02, December 22, 2008 (UTC)

No problem, one can't be expected to know it all :)
I don't believe there is a better template, but you can always list an article on WP:Translation (where you would indicate the source to be translated and the destination where the translation is to be placed). From my previous experiences, the folks there are usually quite expedient in handling such requests (unless you flood them with hundreds of requests at once, of course :))
All in all, though, the articles you'd like to see expanded are not expanded not because folks don't know that the mirror articles in the Russian Wikipedia exist, but simply because WP:RUSSIA does not have enough manpower. I've been going through these articles painfully and slowly for the past four years, with occasional help here and there on the way, but, of course, I alone can't compete with the productivity of the combined forces of the Russian Wikipedia :)
As for the Heroes of the Soviet Union, no, I don't have a particular interest in that topic. You might want to post recruiting message on WT:RUSSIA or WT:SU, and although I suspect you won't get any response, it is still worth a shot (you never know—perhaps someone was dying to work just on that topic but hesitated to do it alone). I'll be more than willing to help with the transliteration issues, though, so feel free to contact me if you need help in that area. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:19, December 22, 2008 (UTC)
I understand what you mean, don't worry :) I have nothing against putting the {{expand Russian}} template in the articles, even though I'd rate the probability of a casual user stumbling upon and being influenced by it to the point of actually going ahead and expanding the article as fairly low. It's just that it doesn't make much sense to add it to stubs—a stub message is already an indication that the article's content is very limited and, by default, can be expanded upon (and what better place to start than checking the interwiki links?).—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:45, December 22, 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that you had (correctly) added italics to a link to Swan Lake on the page Odile (given name) within two minutes after I created the page. Feature[edit]

Thanks. Yes it does seem quite something to see a featured article you've written on the front page. The problem with writing that article is that she is a little too perfect, there are very few negative reviews of her so it was difficult writing it and trying to make it seem neutral. It snot east writing about someone who receives little criticism. I suspect that many people reading it will consider it still too pro-Zinta and see too much "gloss" but thats Bollywood and the reviews of the films are genuinely accurate and reflect a general response from critics. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix or Aerosmith, blues rock is my preference although I do like a touch of 80s glam metal like Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Steelheart etc. I am open to a huge range of music though as I am on wikipedia, a great deal of artists from country and folk music to arabic music. Yo Yo Ma is an amazing musician and there are also Latin American classical guitarists I like too. I like the occasional bit of opera but I don't like brass bands, except at Christmas. I remember when I was a toddler and I first heard the Salvation Army band, I yelled to high heaven!! The Bald One White cat 16:26, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've always hated rap. Then again I haven't exactly got much in common with black guys living on the streets of the Bronx! LOL. Rap culture is like the complete opposite to me. Funny thing is over half the guys living in the rough part of my towns including like 80% of the school I was at seemed to think they were the "safe" guys from the streets, the chavs who think they are the sort of people that Ali G and notably on a Welsh level, Goldie Lookin' Chain ridicules. My town of Barry is notorious actually in SOuth Wales, Newport and Bridgend too for gangster wannabees, you know the guys with shaved heads, tracksuits, baseball caps and earings, Eminem look alikes who drive around in Vauxhall Novas with alloy wheel trimmings listening to 130 decibel loud rap music and techno. All influended by American rap!

Amazingly the Newport article actually makes it look quite a beautiful city. In reality it is the opposite to this. Much of the city is dirty, rough and full of such people I was discussing above. Most of the villages and countryside in Wales though are quite beautiful. The Bald One White cat 16:52, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've found a much more efficient way of creating articles. I find i am more productive if I sub stub the articles at a rate of five a minute and then working through them all afterwards. It gets quite tedious sorting out each article before you create it, but if the are there to be fixed I find I can do more. Tomorrow I think I may stub all of the Polish painters in the same way and then sort out the birth dates etc afterwards. It is riskier for sure and may attract some speedy requests but if I leave a clear notice at the top that they are under construction it shouldn't be a problem. Just remembered yesterday with seeing the screenshot how tiny the standard size text is. I've had the setting on my own font preference for ages. Have you ever tried changing the font of wikipedia? The Bald One White cat 15:03, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOL. Yes funny you mentioned a Thai jacket actually. I love Thai tailoring but the last time I went to a Thai tailors in Bangkok they didn't have a jacket to fit me! I'm a tad over 6'4", 48" chest and a 35 1/2 inside leg and they didn't have a suit which fitted in both the jacket and trousers. In Thailand I must have been about a foot over average height for a guy! I swear most of the guys there are not that much over 5 foot, probably about 5'3" or 5'4" on average. Same in Indonesia too. I remember when I went to some of the more "stone age" areas of Lombok when very few tourists had ever visited some of the parts and I remember the natives staring at me as if I was an alien! Same in some of the Malaysian villages I visited too. The Bald One White cat 11:08, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway heres a Merry Christmas to you amigo:

Hello AlbertHerring! I just wanted to wish you and your family a merry Christmas! May this Christmas be full of great cheer and holiday spirit. Have a great day and a wonderful New Year, from The Bald One White cat 11:08, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow I had some great gifts. There are some eyewitnress guides to Mexico and Vietnam in there and a book on the history of Nepal. A new Dunlop Cry Baby Hendrix pedal now stands by my amp and even had jelly babies and a selection of cheeses, including my favourites brie, cheshire with apricots and the most mouldy delicious piece of blue stilton I've ever tasted! Move request[edit]

I have no problem with moving pages by request, but only when I can later explain the reason behind such a move. In this case, as you rightly pointed out, it's unclear why the article is located under its current title. Problem is, I don't really see anything terribly wrong with it to substantiate moving it to the version you proposed (to me, personally, either version works just fine). Perhaps it would be better if you contacted User:Kaldari, who moved the article to its current title. Since he (?) is an admin as well, he will be able to move it back if there is no compelling reason to keep it with "the" in the title. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:41, December 24, 2008 (UTC)

Yup, what you need is WP:RUS; it's all in there. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:41, December 24, 2008 (UTC)

The Great Train Wreck of 1918[edit]

The article was originally at Great Train Wreck of 1918, but Nishkid64 moved it for some reason. I've moved it back. Kaldari (talk) 00:34, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello in holiday place![edit]

Excellent. Thanks for taking those images. You should add a description of what and where it is though, e.g Bald Lake, Bald Town, Virginia off Highway Magma 1, Baldest Japan etc and upload them to the commons though, although it will probably be some time before they are used on other wikipedias with articles on them!. I didn't even log onto wiki yesterday! I'll probably take it easy today too unless I feel up to it later! Have a great time anyway and enjoy yourself!! The Bald One White cat 12:28, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What always brings a smile to my face is when somebody notices work I have done on templates or whatever and then copies the example and applies them to something they are interested in. I created a set of templates for Lebanon and Jordan and then before you know it Template:Khan Yunis Governorate exactly modelled on the Lebanon examples turn up for Palestine and a set here. The same happened with Slovenia, one editor took the incentive to carry on where i left off. If more and more people on here did this my goals would be made a lot lot easier. Several hundred clones perhaps might do the trick. The Bald One White cat 22:41, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cloning is done up in Piz Gloria, Switzerland. Its about as cold here today, ffreeezinggg! The Bald One White cat 17:17, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm literally freezing as I type at this moment, its -2 celsius here today and I feel like I'm in a freezer or being cryogenically frozen! Funnily enough it is the coldest day of the year, being the last! The Bald One White cat 13:56, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Cool", literally. That must be about 27 degrees in fahrenheit? Yes the thing is it is normally about 40 degrees here too, the part I live is usually one of the mildest. No snow yet, but up in the Brecon Beacons and obviously up in Scotland they commonly get below zero temperatures and snow!. The photo I took just two weeks ago showed leaves still on the trees. Amazingly now the trees are completely bare within a small time frame, everything looks cold and dead! Hey I merged your Markella article into the existing one. It has some cool details in it. I found an image from flickr of the rocks, I'm scouting about now see if I can find an imge of her, perhaps PD old painting or something. The Bald One White cat 14:23, 31 December 2008 (UTC) Yep I know! 40 degrees celsius? Where do you think we are, actually on Chios lol? The Bald One White cat 14:38, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox added. The Bald One White cat 14:49, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks as if my "new scheme" is working. I stubbed 350 Bollywood films earlier to come back to and I didn't get one quesiton or speedy thrown at me asking why they were empty. It may take a week or two to fill out but I managed to sort out the others and Mexican municipalities I started in the same way right? Anyway, you porbably don't want to do it tonight!, but I was wondering if you could quickly talk page tag the new ones I started today pasting in this The Bald One White cat 18:56, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I am however losing any feeling in my mouse hand. My left hand is burning, kind of like frost bite, my right is stone cold! The cold also gives me a numb feeling in my head!! Perhaps I should put on a beanie and some gloves LOL The Bald One White cat 19:02, 31 December 2008 (UTC) The heating is nearly on full. I'm OK now I've warmed up but I can't remember the last time it was as cold! The Bald One White cat 20:19, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New articles are here if you are up for it later. I think you can distinguish where the films start and end. So what are your plans for the coming year of wikipedia then? Personally I think there should be some sort of focus on African biographies and geography. The Bald One White cat 22:52, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just to let you know that, as evidenced in the articles tagged with it, {{orthodoxwiki}} isn't functioning properly. If you know how, please fix the template, or otherwise, please use {{GFDLSource}}, or a message to the effect of such templates, until the issue is resolved. This is because the template is currently not satisfying the GFDL requirements by not linking to to exact source of the text. Best, – Toon(talk) 22:17, 30 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh really? I tested it on both IE and firefox, and it is saying {{subst:PAGENAMEE}} where the article name and link should be.... Bizzare. In that case, just ignore the above message! – Toon(talk) 16:39, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hrmm, I wonder if there's anywhere we can get it fixed? We need some sort of template mechanic. I guess WP:VPT might be ablem to help. – Toon(talk) 18:49, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Someone at the Village Pump has kindly fixed our problem. :) – Toon(talk) 19:40, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
