AWB category changes[edit]

HI there. I was wondering if you could help me out. The last two days I've been recategorizing Brazilian cities by province and have notched up nearly 2000 edits in doing do! However all that is left is Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul which in total have about 1000 "cities" between them. Could you use AWB to change the articles inCategory:Cities in Rio Grande do Sul to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Rio Grande do Sul State and Category:Cities in São Paulo to Category:Cities, towns and villages in São Paulo State. In doing so the Category:Sao Paul state etc for each one also needs removing. I really need your help here, can you help me?

E.g compare the categories in Adolfo to Adamantina

Thanks friend. The inequality in the Brazilian articles is shocking the difference in quality between some of them are like complete opposites. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Muchas gracias. Yes I will gradually try to add the infoboxes and maps which is a start but eventually I of course would like to see an article like this in english for every place in Brazil. I had put off sorting Brazil for some time because it is such a massive country and a nightmare for the wiki to cover but it has to be done sooner or later. Saludos ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:10, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Let me know when you can do it then. Thanks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 08:10, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I really need your help with this though. I resorted Venezuela earlier and am now working through Iran manually. I'm organizing Iran by province as there are apparently 67,000 settlements Iran. Some day I hope that bot will get approval to create them all ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:54, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou so much for doing that. I really appreciate it!!! I'll let you know if there is a clump to change, offhand I know Colombia needs reorganizing by province as Category:Towns in Colombia is too large but I haven't got around to that yet. Cheers!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 07:44, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Today I'm doing something rather different. I'm writing the Amitabh Bachchan article.!! Not a bad improvement from earlier so far huh. I've currently reached 1979 ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:41, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah do what you can -there are tons of missing superb articles on french and italian wiki. There wa afrench article on a commune which is FA standard I can't remember what it was though -it is a sub stub on here ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:46, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It would be great if you could translate Cortina d'Ampezzo a bit from Italian wiki. I've been meaning to learn Italian, I love everything about Italy but I haven't got around to yet. I love Cortina and the Dolomites ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 08:52, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I;ve just had a marathon guitar session. Played along to entire albums of Bryan Adams, Def Leppard and Aerosmith and then played along with the Lynard Skynard live dvd (had to tune down to E flat). I finished with Free Bird which is a marathon track itself with the crazy fast shredding towards the end in g major. As I type my finger tips feel harder than usual!! I feel like I've just been to a rock concert! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:11, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've been playing actively since I was 7. 17 years of playing! The Marshall amp I have is a concert amp and even on 0.1 volume in the house its pretty loud!! I would love to test it out outdoors full blast! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:22, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I play piano too but not so much these days. Costa Rica needs changing from Category:Cities in Costa Rica, Category:Towns in Costa Rica and Category:Villages in Costa Rica to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Costa Rica as does Panama to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Panama. Both Category:Cities in Panama and Category:Towns in Panama need emptying into this one category ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:28, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I know there are some crazy important articles missing, I find it very peculiar the way in which this encyclopedia has developed without real planning and haphazardly. There are countless cathedrals too which are famous national landmarks which are missing too for places like Italy and Slovenia. God I love Italy, I have to say that out of all the places I've been Italy has left the biggest impression on me along with Thailand and Hawaii ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:34, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I created the Italian film series in the template on the right. I don't know if you are into Italian cinema but I had begun developing the titles like Italian films of 1950 but haven;t got very far. Once all the titles a readded to the years for both Italy and France I think a stub run may be in order to get them blue linked ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey nice work on that article!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:56, 28 April 2008 (UTC) Nice job on Céline Yoda. I did intend to stub a list of politicians from various african countries a while back which sombody had drawn up. As I am developing the departments of burkina there is a huge number of red links on towns and villages. I'll be adding these to the templates to have full templates by province but stubbing them will be done sooner or later. Of course the Brazilian municipalities need to be completed some of the states are very poorly developed still. I'm about half way through now adding the burkina departments ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:38, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Eventually it would be nice to see detailed templates like Wikipedia:WikiProject Burkina Faso/Provincial templates for every country and then templates like the slovenian cities for most of the world cities and towns. Probably Benin will be deveoped next ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:41, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Hey they aren't sub stubs as they provide information!!! Sub stubs are one liners without infoboxes like we did with the french communes! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:52, 29 April 2008 (UTC) LOL. I am about to shoot throught some Hong kong film red links. Now they're sub stubs!! But there is so much missing! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:56, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Wow thats probably a small proportion of what actually could be written but that list is excellent. I shall copy that list the main WP:Africa project page for requests ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:04, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow its sudden;y turned into a thunderstorm here in the UK. Very rare but its absolutely lashing down out there! I hope I don't get cut off! I'll asdd the cast and some posters to some of those HK stubs later. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:49, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Its funny but I tried to look for some flickr images of the cayman islands only two days ago. I swear we only have two images in the commons on the whole islands. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:56, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well theres one expanded slightly The Boxer From Shantung. I don't know if you like martial arts but Hong films particularly of the 70s and 80s are so entertaining. Have a look at this site. With the video clips and that its quite cool I think. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:52, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thats great work. Yes for many places thrre are evne webistes for the smallest of places such as the Kiribati National Knitting Organization! lol just kidding, I know the more I browse websites the greater the headache I get because you realize that 2 million articles s just a small fish in the sea. But the best we can do is build it and make it convenient to access on one site ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:23, 29 April 2008 (UTC) Hi could you quickly translate La Boîte à merveilles from french wiki. It isn't much but just to make it worthwhile ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:27, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'm just adding some infobox maps to some senegalese towns -french wiki has over 100 more articles than us and some of their articles are quite well developed. Understanding french also comes in very handy for much of north-north west africa. If I'm not mistaken there are more countries in africa which are french than not ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:57, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh did you notice the extra 40 years of film pages added to the Italian plate? We now have 1910-2008 which I will gradually develop ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:59, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Your;re doing a great job I think with translation. If you have any article writing plans later check out the category Villes de Senegal in the french later where you could add some missing main towns if you are interested ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:03, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Well there is just so many subjects to concentrate its difficult knowing what to stick to. I try to to divide my time between developing articles on towns and places in the developing world such as africa, latin america and parts of asia, and improving content on all subjects related to the arts and culture mostly in eastern europe and world films. Most of the articles in Category:Hungarian sculptors are mine it really is an interesting subject. I've also been developing biographical articles on people in lesser covered countries. I drew up list of Ecuadorian musicians (which needs wikifying and the names red linked correctly) they other day after listening to some Ecuadorian classical guitarists on you tube (Hidrobo Homero) and have been adding a few Peruvian poet stubs. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:15, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you seem to be very much like me in my outlook on here and we seem to share similar interests particularly geography and art. Good luck on developing the Caymans! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:19, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Amazing have a look at Agnam-Goly and time images including more in the commons. This is kind of exactly was I envisage in the futre for every village in Africa . To have detailed articles and photographs of every place in the world that provide an insight to life in thesde places like this article does. I have no idea why this article is more developed than most of the capitals in africa on wiki but I know it is achieveable to be able to develop like this. For me this is a crucial part of the project in opening up access to places you or I have never heard of or are never likely to visit. At present we have about 50 articles on senegalese towns. Maplandia shows there are over 9,000 ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:25, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well that village seems to have contacts. The uploader of some of the photos is named after the village so I have an incline it is either from a local or somebody from the western world who has worked there for some time. I encountered somebody only flickr who had worked for months in places in Ghana. This is why we have images of places like Akwidaa. My want is to obtain indiscriminate photos of everywhere that just capture everyday life in these places as it is. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:49, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Uganda, Namibia and Vietnam need doing. I'm caught in two minds though whether to set up a provincial sub category structure for Vietnam as there are a potential 40,000 odd places there. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:54, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Of course then there are Colombia and Peru which will certainly be reorganized by province or region when I set those up. The biggy is Argentina see Category:Cities in Argentina The cities are split mostly by province already but there will need moving to e.g Category:Cities, towns and villages in Buenos Aires Province. Small place slike villages are usually categorized as e.g Settlements in Buenos Aires. Each provinc ewill need merging into a neat single category for each province. But I have some work to do though setting up the categries for that one ready to recategrize ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:59, 30 April 2008 (UTC) I'll examine the current status of Vietnam now. I have a gut feeling its best to organize a provincial sub cat structure like that like I have done to Burma. The big one is Argentina e.g Category:Cities in Buenos Aires Province and Category:Settlements in Buenos Aires Province should all be merged into one category Category:Cities, towns and villages in Buenos Aires Province. This process should be copied for the other provinces of Argentina. Yes there shouldn't be any articles in "settlements in Uganda etc they should all be going into the one category. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:03, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes if it is a refugee camp or something then thats fine. I'll look into Vietnam now, but the Argentina one is the long standing one. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:14, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Laos should take about 30 seconds, also there is Somalia and Saudi Arabia ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:21, 30 April 2008 (UTC) I've made a decision about Vietnam. At present given the few number of articles amove to a main cat would be best. However when I get around the adding vietnamese towns later we may then need to think about a provincial reordanization but at present I think a move to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Vietnam is best ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:32, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:33, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool, I'll move on and set up the regional city, town village categories for Peru then ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:51, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Wow so quick. Yes I'm in the middle of creating the categories from Category:Towns in Peru and feeding new categories into Category:Cities, towns and villages in Peru Yep thats excellent. When you feel like doing some more let me know. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:58, 30 April 2008 (UTC) I know Faroe Islands and Grenada have cats presently called cities and I also have to get around to changing Indonesia by state which is best I think given that most of them are divided by island and of course Peru needs finishing much of which I can do manually no probs. As I say though no rush, even if you do some every few days this is a great help towards my organization programme! Saludos! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? I;ve just set up a category structure for Indonesia. See Category:Cities, towns and villages in Indonesia and then click the regions. The best way is to categorize by province for Indonesia, it makes complete geographical sense to do so. I;ve se tup all the required categories for the provinces. Mpalndia revealed there are well over 60,000 places in Indonesia and thouands within each province so setting up this strucutre is the best for the future I think. I'll get as much done for Peru and Indonesia tomorrow, I'm not sure you can use AWB for these anyway ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:42, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I've recategorized Peru and Indonesia manually (how come nobody ever gives me a barnstar lol) but I have some more requests if you are up for it some time. Countries include Iraq, Egypt, Armenia, Croatia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Moldova, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Faroes and Mayotte. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC) Just kidding I have nearly 50 of them, but nobody has recognized my work at recategorization yet! I've jyst added the departments of Niger some of them are the size of some African countries but together yet were missing! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC) COuld you imagine if I had never had any!. I would have slapped everyone for their lack of appreciation!!! See here for my awards. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:52, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Togo is Indonesia didn't you know? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:18, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I've been to Bali ,Lombok and Bintan loved it. Back in 1998. Disliked Kuta. Full of Aussie surfers with blond ponytails brandishing Qucksliver merchandise in your face! I remember eating at a native place in Lombok and they had rats on sticks! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well to put things in perspective see the missing settlements in Bhamo Township with comprises of 1/18th of Kachin State. There are 14 states/divisions in Burma. So basically your timesing this by 18 and then multiplying by 14 and that justs Burma!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:57, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sheesh I need to take a break from that now!!! I devised a way of creating new templates to cover areas of Burma in more detail. I think I've found the most efficient way I can start them manually ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:14, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I've found a way that district templates can be created for most countries and then linking the towns and villages within them. First of all I copy the settlements to the main district pages, format them and then copy them into templates. This process can be done for all the districts of most countries. It is a huge task for each country alone let alone the whole globe but this is easily the best way we are ever going to even begin to start getting even coverage geographically on here. It isn't as impossible as people might think to accomplish, if I could create a work group of tens of editors to work on each country in such a way things would be laid out within a few months. Something tells me this won't happen but it is the first step towards doing something, The first stage is copying lists of places to each district article on wiki red linked like I did with some of those Burmese ones ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:28, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New Project[edit]

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:03, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Albert. I started going through Category:Cities and towns in Mexico manually but could you please help me complete them. It will take me a while to go through them all manually changing the cats. COuld you help out? I started sorting in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Mexico. Could you help complete the process of renaming? It should be straightforward as they ar esplit alreayd just need the city, town, village thing added ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:09, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thats excellent as it is one less thing I've got to worry about sorting, that means a lot. Soon enough we'll get to the stage when we are in control of what geo articles we have on here and can begin to built content properly en masse!!! I'll continue with Burkina Faso now having finsihed addin the greek museums earlier. So far 160/301 Burkina deps started ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:16, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Of course naturally I'll want to be continuing with developing the Burmese towns and villages sometime again soon. They reckon the death count following that cyclone is likely to surpass 100,000 ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:23, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well you'd be looking for places near the coast in the Ayeyarwady Division which I believe was hardest hit. Theres likely to be even more settlements in that area. I'm sure that that area and Yangon has the highest population density in the whole of Burma. (Yep just checked highest population in the whole of Burma) The places I was adding the other day were far away in the north-east in the mountains ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:11, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well thats not the only example of where people tend to ignore what places were hit by it. Mostly the wiki meteorologists will edit these articles and not pay much attention to the amount of villages that were hit by it much. As this develops I would think it a good idea to branch off into an article covering the Impact and exmaining the areas hit by it in detail ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:16, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Death count is now over 100,000 isn't it? Crazily high and then the most of what yahoo UK and that report is the 17 British people missing rather than covering the 100,000 dead! Have you any articles on painters or canvasses you want started? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:20, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it does make me wonder what priorities are at times. 100,000 people dead and Prince William making a trip to Rhondda makes most of the headline news. Many thanks for helping out with that. Of course there was that list of European painters to continue with which I'll try and develop sometime. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:34, 8 May 2008 (UTC) Si amigo ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC) Ahhh that coren bot is after my ass!! Yes. I've had to stop now as it was taggin them all too. No reply yet. A bot tagging copywrighted articles is a great thing but not one that fusses about similar pages!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:49, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK I'll try some Burkina departments again see what happens ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:52, 8 May 2008 (UTC) That bot is still misbehaving but I've found a way to ignore it just about. I've red linked Districts of Laos ready for developing later. I'll create a template now. I've I am to begin adding Laotian places the main second level divisions of course need starting!! When I get around to creating the articles I'll split towns by province first to save time later. 14:32, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Congratd on DYK. I managed to get my account white linked anyway so Coren Bot won't be causing Mr Bigglesworth to go bald anymore. Cool like my new volcano? I;ve been waiting to find one for ages that looks like the one with the false green lake in it like the one in You Only Live Twice. This one is in Costa Rica (pretend its deepermost Japan) it looks exactly like it too!! Oh believe me if there wasn't so much missing geographically I would spent my time starting and writing start-class articles and having a DYK most days! Yesterday I had to restore the Tibet article back to the January 7 edition and cut it down myself. It was not good I tell you. Its looking a lot better now but it is an incredibly difficult article to protect and block out the POV brigade ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:03, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know. At present i am tackling what I think is the largest district of Togo - Bassar. Compared to Assoli this one is a giant but I'm making good progress through those red links! Togo was one of the least developed countries on here. If you browse in the MSN encarta atlas at these places you realise just how pathetic our coverage of these places really is. You pan out and even Togo itself looks absolutely tiny in Africa. My goal is to have an article on anywhere on a detailed world atlas like so but to have a half decent article on it and pictures!!! Nothing on here is impossible to achieve given the scope of this project but its got to start developing from somehere hasn't it. Hopefully I can get a bot programmed some time to create 10 articles a minute and lay a foundation ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:12, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well wikipedia strives to provide the "sum of all knowledge". When Jimbo issued that I'm not sure he actually realised what that would take to achieve. It isn't something attainable in our lifetime I don't think. Your're looking at billions of articles for that! I'm sure when you browse about you also get mind boogled what stuff is out there even on the web and think 2 million articles is a tiny fraction of what could be. Imagine what is lying about in all those libraries of the world and in their native languages. Still, even so an encyclopedia distributed through a cable around the globe is still as remarkable achievement, but it is up to us now to fulfill its potential ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:24, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about you, where do you see this project developing in the future?. Where do you see the wiki ten years from now? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:40, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I would sincerely hope that the growth of active editors who are able will increase and people will start to look at it as being here for the long term and start to do something about quality. Some of the articles I've seen which should be of a high quality and at least a GA class are stubs or are so poorly written that it would probably be best to start them again. Then you;ll come across a stunning article on something you've never heard of in your life. E.g you'll see an article on a district of for example kazakhstan, which is the size some countries yet it is still a limited stub. Then you'll find an FA on an individual object or something, it is that uneven. Quality and reliability but also consistency are major goals it should try to achieve. Its probably best that most of the core articles are of an acceptable standard-e.g GA class and above. Obviously the scope of the project will by that time have increased enormously but I have a feeling many of our stubs on lesser developed countries will remain so for a long time. Even as they are they are of some value but I want to see things develop evenly and more on lesser known places and cultures to become steadily avialable. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:59, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I remain optimistic though that expanding them is possible. A while back I started some articles on Danish actors with just an infbox and image and a filmography. Article like Inger Stender now are still not up to a great standard but they have still been translated from Danish and epxanded so they are OK. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:08, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. I know so many of my articles have been expanded like so. It is very encouraging I think. It really feels good when you;ve seen it develop doesn't it. All they need is development and sustained interest ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:26, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Out of interest could you see if Arturo Corcuera can be expanded from spanish. It is still a stub on the spanish wiki but the external link given has quite a lot. Anonymous artists[edit]

Many of the new ones you have done seem to be WP:COPYVIOs from Grove/Answers, the NGA, etc. The amount of rewording done is not nearly enough. I suggest you get some other sources and add/rewrite to remove this issue. I'll have a look in a week or two, but most can't survive as they are, I'm afraid. Obviously if they were all like the Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece there would be no problem. Also, if the Master of the Female Half-Lengths is only known from Antwerp, he/they is not a "Dutch" painter, for which he is too early anyway, but like many of these belongs in Category:Early Netherlandish painters. The Anon category itself is useful though, so well done for that. Johnbod (talk) 03:23, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Museums stubs split by continent[edit]

Hi see my request to User talk:Alai.Feel free to add any comments. If there are less than 60 in Africa perhaps we could make sure there are 60 stubs like you did with places like Aruba etc. Museum-stub seems a bit broad given the amount of museums in the world ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:42, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good, There should be two for each African country at least which would make it 120. Googling each Senegal museum or in french ought to bring up some interesting findings etc. I'll aim at adding a few later. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No what I mean is placing e.g Category:Museums in Angola in Category:Museums in Africa so there are like 55 sub categories connected ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:24, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I think we'll find most of the countries don't have any. Museums in Africa naturally tell a great deal about its culture, I've always found those african tribal masks and stuff pretty interesting ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:27, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Categorification[edit]

[1] Thanks, man! This is an excellent idea. That it is also part of the policy, all the better! Proper categorification of localities was one of the reason preventing me from creating articles for other localities of Moldova: you see, the notions of town, city and village in some nations are somewhat different from American or British ways, especially when it comes to "town"/"commune". One more problem solved. Thanks Dc76\talk 16:39, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Geobots and Westphalians[edit]

Your welcome some of these anonymous artists really look great its a shame their names weren't found. Things potentially look very promising with the Geo Bot. See User talk:Fritzpoll, Fritz has already exmained several sites and is certain a GeoBot can be implemented. He is making an assessment over the next few days and how to get a directory of missing articles on here, he seems to know what he is doing with programming, so fingers crossed. Evne if Maplandia is not permitted as Bot requests we have a US government site with 900kb of names and coordinates to download so something will be done. I want to start drilling this bot for hours daily and add over a million articles onto here. Perhaps we could even have two geo bots working at it who knows. Interesting in running one? If it lives up to its potential it will be without a doubt the most extensive new article bot run/ generation of new content evne seen in the history of wiki! I examined Bangladesh last night and we only have 33 articles out of 27,000. Ridiculous isn't it. I've rather tired of settlements now though today and have turned my attention to the arts again . ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:22, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AHh I just lost my detailed message to you because of the crappy system strain. To cut it short I think an awful amount of time is wasted on wikipedia by poor planning and inefficiency. Too many editors spend time arguing and bickering over unnecessary things when there is an encyclopedia to develop. The best I can do is urge bot programmers and authorisers to seriously think about what is missing and working at how to address this. I may also see about getting a NatureBot running to blue link articles on species and genera and there must be over a million missing articles in that field too. You also must have been astounded by the red links you have seen in plant and wildlife articles ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:40, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I find it particularly disturbing that with bots virtually all of them concentrate on tagging articles and maintenance tasks sometimes amazingly so, but a very small percentage of them have ever been implemented to create new articles on wikipedia. I can only think of a handful which have ever done anything of serious value (like PolBot and RamBot). Given the incredible amount missing in such fields as this I strongly think there should be bots running on a daily basis for several months if this site is going to be serious about its future development. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:48, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I've always done as much as I can to enhance content and coverage on wikipedia on a personal level but given what these bots are able to accomplish and annoyingly message me image warnings as we speak it really is time to plan how to maximise their usage beyond our individual input and capabilities to generate new content. Ideally there should be bots running across all the major fields of wikipedia run by the most active members of their relative projects. This includes historical, science, astronomy and arts articles also. Given that people have been developing a huge list of "Missing Encyclopedia Articles" I see little evidence of anything seriously working to filling them in. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:04, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes of course you see manually generated articles regularly like this (User:Charles Matthews etc) and the odd DNA/asteroid bot but I'm talking about automatically generated content in serious bulk ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:11, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I guess so. But I've seen PolBot start some very decent articles on politicians in the past and these weren't sub stubs. . Of course they are only meant to generate new content not write the articles. What we want at the end of the day is quantity and quality all over. Speedy deletion of Empereur Island[edit]

A tag has been placed on Empereur Island, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. J.C. (talk) 18:43, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:JonesSodaCan.jpg}[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:JonesSodaCan.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Recatting 1500[edit]

Excellent! I think my record is around 1900 when I did the french communes. Never again!!!! Thats takes care of a lot of things, Next will be Mongolia, China and North Korea. With China it is just moving them like Mexico. Pakistan will also need renaming for the sub cats in the same way as Mexico. I;ve done Papua New Guinea and Latvia today (but reverted by Darwinek). I'll probably won't now try to tackle Lithuania or Estonia later . After this we are coming down to the countries where more people are likely to object to recatting "their" articles because they don't like change. Countries like Norway (in particular), Sweden, Finland, Ukraine and Poland would need discussion with the projects first. According to Darwinek if countries like these are changed "he will revert everything". What to do with the european categories will need a lot more discussion, partocularly if we are to create regional sub categories. Of course the biggy is still Argentina which would put a few edits under your belt!!!! Whenever you feel like doing any give me a bell. Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:56, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing. I've nearly finished adding infoboxes to Tunisia like Sousse etc. Looks a lovely country the coastline naturally looks like southern Italy just being across the Med. Face the other direction and it is clear you are in Arab land!!! I'l be trying to ensure they all have infoboxes before all the settlments are added. Personally with Afghanistan I would ditch the "Afghan city infobox" and stick to standard. At least the new articles will be using standard. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:22, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Its undergoing approval at present. Apparently 10 articles will be created a minute, 600 an hour. But I think it may take some time to get up and running. But if it lives up to expectation in a few weeks this growth of this site will be going crazy. Before each country is started though we'll need to go through the lists that Fritz has made and dab any settlements if appropriate as the bot will ignore existing titles. Are you up for this? With a few of us dabbing the red links for most of the countries shouldn't take too long. Then once it is done by country the bot will be adding them all. Fritz worked out that even if we ignore North America and Europe there should be over 1.4 million articles added. Of course most of the european countries particularly north/east and central europe have far from full coverage. Including russia I estimated there are at least 1.8 million articles missing at the very least out of 2.12 million in total. If this proves to be true we may be looking at nearer 2 million new articles, which of course took 7 years to start and this of course would be done within a few months if we work hard. Some day we also may be able to work something out with botting notable landmarks in many of the world towns and cities using wikimapia etc too (also natural features in countries like Lakes, mountains, rivers etc). There must be hundreds of missing articles on Lakes in Finland alone., so I believe it is the start of tsomething very promising. I won't talk too much about it until it actual works and is in its stride!. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:12, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In regards to infobox maps I agree. Goven the huge size of some countries in a 5cm map seems ridiculous. But aside from the national which is usual I would like to see provincial maps made for most countries too. We'll have to rely on the dutch for this, they have this for some provinces in argentina and the "western" countries already which make a big difference. Two maps would serve a great purpose I believe. But in the same way the national maps were created this would also be done gradually. If you have any valid requests which are plausible feel free to red link it at User:Blofeld of SPECTRE/Missing locator maps. Those are the ones I've created to date. Sometime I'll get the Pacific Island maps done if User:Sadalmelik would kindly make the actual maps ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:24, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I happened to have the best book on Flemish illuminatrs, & had done the Froissart already. I don't have sources for most of the others, though I've added to some. There are loads of anon artists - the HKren/McK book alone invents about 10 new "Masters of". The "Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy" (names vary) & the M of the Dresden Prayer Book are two of the most significant. Sometimes it's best, as with Rohan Hours to do the article on he book, which we know a lot about, rather than the master who is largely invisible, and just redirect him. The editor note says this was "per CFD", but I'm unable to find a CFD debate about the topic (or a debate anywhere, for that matter). Can you point me to a rationale for those moves? Excellent progress! WHen its completely done and checked I reckon we should propose it for a DYK and share the royalties huh? But as for there not being any villages in Mongolia well..... I've tried to get Latebird to think about adding assessment parameters to the Mongolian articles but he doesn't seem interested. Why do you think countries like kazakhstan, and the rest of the huge countries of central asia are laggin behind everybody elese in individual assessments - he won't allow other editors space to move. John Carter tried to do it a while back but ended up with exactly the same sort of barrier he gave you. Evidence?. Apparently the process could be speedied up even more if approved. Imagine what could happen if that ran for hours a day for several weeks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:35, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It has conducted its 100 article trial and has more than proved itself, near 10 times faster than I could churn them out. It still need approval by BAG at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/FritzpollBot. The more editors who join in the discussion the better as potentially the site nearly double in the number of pages ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:42, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK? I'm not really feeling like wikipedia at the moment, I do get times when I get tired of it and feel more lazy. I qualify for a break do you think? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:42, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I'd noticed the new wildlife refuge articles. Go for it! Sometimes I feel rather less enthusiastic about developing wikipedia but I'll probably be back in a few days adding tons of articles on italian and french films or something... ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:51, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mr. Herring. I'm gonna need your help with recategorizing Afghanistan. I've set up the empty categories in Category:Cities, towns and villages in Afghanistan. Probably the best thing is to go through Category:Provinces of Afghanistan and move articles e.g in Category:Badakhshan Province to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Badakhshan Province etc. Naturally Category:Cities, towns and villages in Afghanistan will have to be removed ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:56, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protected Areas of Virginia[edit]

I have a suggestion at Template_talk:Protected_Areas_of_Virginia that I'd be curious to hear your feedback on. It seems to me that the Protected Areas of Virginia template is getting overly long. I'm wondering if it makes sense to drop some of the individual listings for national cemeteries and historic districts. Brian Powell (talk) 15:45, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

At this point, I'm starting to think there is too much stuff to really appreciably shrink down the list. Personally, I don't really like the idea of splitting the state and federal lands. I haven't seen any other state do that, either. My two ideas at this point are that we either just keep everything there as it is now or that we take some of more non-park items (cemeteries, WMAs, NAPs) and create seperate navboxes for each of them, linking them to the main one. Brian Powell (talk) 17:04, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The only other state I've seen with the NWRs listed is West Virginia, but there are just two with Canaan Valley and Ohio River Islands. Virginia's got a lot of NPS sites, so that bulks up the list. I've not seen national cemeteries listed on the other states, but everything else there seems like standard fare for the most part. The list of NRHP sites is a bit unique for what I can tell, though. Brian Powell (talk) 18:06, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can't really think of anything else to add to the infobox. It seems to be pretty comprehensive at the moment.  :-)
I think it would probably make sense to redo the NRHP listings. Merge them all into one page, add a big sortable table. That should make it easy to find the information and would let us condense everything.
I do believe that VA has more cemeteries than the other states. It makes sense, though - a lot of them are Civil War era and many of them are very small, just a couple acres in size. Brian Powell (talk) 18:26, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if it's worth creating another stub tag. With West Virginia items at least, we've just been tagging them with the stub category for the county. Brian Powell (talk) 19:16, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK then, I guess maybe use regional stubs if they exist. If not, maybe then a Protected Areas one would make sense. Brian Powell (talk) 19:48, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot approved: dabbing help needed[edit]

Hi there. Fritz bot has been approved at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/FritzpollBot for filling in a possible 1.8 million articles on settlements across the world. Now dabbing needs to be done for links which aren't sorted as the bot will bypass any blue links. and I need as many people as possible to help me with Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places to prepare for the bot. If you could tackle a page or two everything counts as it will be hard to do it alone. Thankyou ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:01, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm nearly half way through Afghanistan. If anything I should start on Bangladesh as thats the biggy to start with,. I'll try to get Afghan dabbed today and then will start on that asap ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With Bhutan if you find an article which redirects towards the district, create the seperate page on the town. Could you provide me an example? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:25, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

E.g like Chhukha ... ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bhutans all done now. I filled in those by hand ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I've had plenty of practice! The Bhutan map though looks too far north than it should be, MJCdetroit needs to check the coordinates as its placing some of them about 40km south of the border in India ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:11, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Albert. COuld you check to see I haven't botched up the translation of Cortina, Italy and Massat. Thanks, I aim to get a full translation of Cortina in a few days ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:25, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.virginia.org/site/description.asp?AttrID=39722. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. Found a book in my cupboard on the Seychelles! I forgot my parents went there a few years back. Just started Media and telecommunications in Seychelles too. Check out the Seychelles Nation website, there are several hundred articles on each of 50 topics!! If we can gain access to resources like that for most of the African countries and get hold of some books thing would develop fast. I bought a book on Burkina Faso later, a Bradt guide from ebay. Interested in buying one on ebay so you can help develop an African country on here? Some of them are 500 pages long and really informative. They are apprantely more detailed than stabdard travel guides in that they have greater depth on local places and cultures. Mali, Sudan Ghana etc all have their own books. Ther eis a 250 page book on Cape Verde too! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:42, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you still interested amigo or plagued with work? I;ve found a Seychelles newspaper article from today that a series of Internet cafes are opening in the Seychelles. If this happens in part of Africa with young people gaining access to the web the knowledge thing online has to increase. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:59, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah I see, I'd noticed it seems like something is on your mind the last few days, not surpised if you have a job interview, you seem a little dejected. I'm receptive even over the web!! Best of luck with the job anyway, and cheer up!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:28, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean to create Subsandbox for NRHP stuff in your userspace? It's in mainspace. Nyttend (talk) 01:51, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
