Disambiguation link notification for July 2[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited John Mare (painter), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Chippendale (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Better source request for some of your uploads[edit]

Thanks for your uploads to Wikipedia. There is an issue with some of them, specifically:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the images because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the images, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image files themselves. Please update the image descriptions with URLs that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:06, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How is a physics instrument to measure vibrations classified as Medicine project? From what I could see only one reference mentions such use, but it's primarily a tool to research polymers. Gryllida 02:09, 3 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Surnames[edit]

Could I request that you do not add disambiguation tags to the talk pages of surname list articles, since they aren't disambiguation pages. It's not a problem in itself but a bot will eventually come along and create misleading redirects because of it. —Xezbeth (talk) 05:51, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, adding disambiguation tags to redirects is a bad idea. —Xezbeth (talk) 05:53, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hi - having trouble navigating[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. I am having trouble finding my way around. I am a biologist and would prefer to edit bio articles. I went to preferences but it didn't give me an option to choose what kind of articles I edit and I get random ones when I get into editing. Also I am having trouble finding my way back to editing... from here if I click on edit, it just wants me to edit this page. I know how to edit so I don't need the sandbox but I could use a roadmap :) Thanks for any hints or directions regards, Reefswaggie (talk) 11:49, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help! a couple more questions[edit]

Thanks for your prompt and friendly response to my questions. I am now working my way through the tutorial. I'm particularly interested in links and references right now... It's not intuitively obvious to me yet how to construct them but I will reread it all in a minute and have a go in the sandbox. My question now is: I have written pages on a lot of organisms for helium.com - may I reference my own writing on a subject?

I am not a specialist, although my field is roughly evolutionary ecology - how species have evolved together in particular ecosystems. I have worked as a marine biologist (mudworms in oysters) but have also attempted a PhD in Avian Ecology and spent time studying soil insects on the tundra, seals and penguins on remote islands and the flora and fauna of my own property in northern New South Wales, although I am currently living near Cairns. I have also been a wildlife rescuer and carer for many years and specialize in raptor rehabilitation. To earn a crust, I have been a science and marine studies teacher for the past twenty years but am reinventing myself these days for a company that requires articles about herpes simplex... my boss said to get on wiki and become an editor first to establish my credibility before turning my hand to writing articles for him.

Ok off to the tutorial and following links to biology pages :). Where do you live? What's your background? Was Ser Amantio di Nicolao a historical figure? - great name! Regards from far north Queensland, Reefswaggie (talk) 23:51, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

meanings of nicknames[edit]

I came to Australia in 1975 - born in Oregon, high school in California, Universities in Canada, NZ, Alaska and then a job in Aus. I love Aussie slang... during the depression, the itinerant unemployed 'blokes' who wandered around looking for work carried their belongings wrapped up in their bed rolls and these were called their swags... when they went 'walkabout' they were said to be 'humping their swags' (no sexual allusion there in those days) and they were called swaggies. I have been wandering around most of my life and now I like to wander around the Great Barrier reef whenever possible - hence the nick Reefswaggie. What I like about it is that I have never come across it anywhere else - like yours, I am sure, its unique so I don't have to be reefswaggie12 or something :)... oh have you heard the aussie song Waltzing Matilda? the first line is Once a Jolly Swagman camped beside a billabong, under the shade of a Coolabah tree... cheers from down undah, 58.165.109.175 (talk) 06:23, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

my first serious edit[edit]

Hi again,

I chose a random article on Grise Fiord to edit. Transportation had one sentence and living conditions had none. So I read up on the place to add to what I already know about the high arctic and wrote a few sentences... I managed to put in my first reference but I didn't put any pretty blue links to other wiki sites because I'm not quite sure how to do it yet... maybe I am getting ahead of myself but I find doing it works better for me than trying to read the manual first :) Would you mind reading my effort and letting me know if its ok and how I can make it better? Thank you! (I went to Teahouse but was too embarrassed to ask my oh so basic questions - you are currently my only wiki-friend so I decided to bother you instead) regards, Reefswaggie (talk) 10:33, 8 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

can I add new headings?[edit]

Hi

I am back after a few days of 'real' work (i.e. for money :). I am random editing for experience and am on the Camaiore page. I corrected some sentences but then thought it would be good to add a climate section, but I couldn't see how to do that. cheers from down under, Reefswaggie (talk) 08:25, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Baird's Trogon edit[edit]

Hi again,

I have been away for a few days with other work and now I am trying to edit an article. I have worked my way through the editing tutorial in the sandbox but the reference I tried to add did not come up as a footnote and it didn't come up as a link either. I have looked at the tutorial and back at my effort and I cannot see what I have done wrong. Can you help me please?

a few minutes later: When i went back to the page and clicked on references edit, somehow i managed to change it to a footnote but instead of showing the whole reference, it is just showing a number 1 in the references though it shows it as a [2] in the actual text... but at least the link does work when I click on it! I must admit that I am finding the tutorial a bit hard to understand.

Ok, when I went back again, now the reference is showing correctly below the reference line, so maybe I am just not giving it enough time? I have now added a link to a flickr photo and so far it is not showing correctly so i guess i will go back and see if it has changed since i last looked. NO, I think what happened is that you went and made the change by adding <nowiki> before and after the text and the link. I will try that with the flickr ref now too.

nope now its saying i cannot edit it except in source mode... confusing :(

Reefswaggie (talk) 05:16, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do I just continue here to continue this conversation or do I start a new line? Whatever - I am here now :) I went to the VE page and found out how to get out of VE when I do things. I also found that uploading flickr photos is not as straightforward as I thought, so I will get more experience first. What I did finally 'grok' this morning was the ease of adding internal links using double brackets... I thought at first I had to somehow provide the actual link so that's a relief that if the page exists in wiki, it can find it without me giving directions. The other important thing that I learned was that it will tell me in red if the page doesn't exist yet. I experimented with internal links in an article about a French commune. I am trying to stick to science related subjects as I troll through random articles because that is where my expertise lies (I skip articles on sport and media personalities!). What I also want to do is become a writer for wikipedia. I have some experience with internet writing, mainly at helium.com where I have written over 200 articles, mostly biological. (I consider myself to be the 'worm queen' because I have written articles on every type of worm most ppl can think of and a few that almost nobody has ever heard of... :)

It's called de:Vorlage:DNB and clearly has a similar function but links a databank at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek or German National Library. It's intended for books that are pre-ISBN. Whitey Chandler[edit]

Is it me or if you gave Whitey Bulger a shave and a blonde wig he'd look like Chelsea Handler? Same mean and spiteful expression and eyes! I can't believe she's only 8 years older than myself, I thought she was nearing 50!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:22, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see Handler produced Love You, Mean It with Whitney Cummings. Out of curiosity, why is she absolutely filthy? What is it though with these reality stars, they always look ten years older than they really are!! Half of the cast of TOWIE who are supposedly 21-23 look in their early to mid 30s. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:36, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't believe Whitey Cummings is my age! That hideous plastic face, she looks nearer 40 to me.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:43, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[2] Defintely has had a nose job and by looking at her face I'd say an eye lift, lips plumped and botox, I wouldn't be surprised if those were cheekbone implants too. OK, she's generally doesn't look like some of the hideous Californian plastic blondes, but she's already started to look like Cher if you know what I mean.. Her whole face from eye down to jaw looks plastic to me, much more so than Heidi Montag.

Some areas on here really are completely off "western" editorial radar. Ampang Medikal has not been significantly edited since its creation 5 years ago and the version when I read it said "scheduled for airing on August 21 2008. Embarrassing isn't it, but I suppose it hardly gets a lot of traffic.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:47, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tillie Wakes Up and so do I[edit]

Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I've been appreciating your kind input when I post new films and I accidentally posted a film that you'd already done, Tillie Wakes Up, not realizing that you'd already done a page on that film under Tillie Wakes Up. Meanwhile, others had added an infobox to my new version and so forth. When I discovered your page a little while ago (I think you created it but I'm not 100% sure now that I think of it, I don't know if I scrolled down far enough to check), I took the liberty of purloining the Synopsis and adding that to my mirror page then it occurred to me to post everything on your original page so that you can take mine down or whatever you'd like to do, revert it to your original one, delete the second one, or keep whatever you want and delete whatever you'd like however you like. The main thing is that I want you to know that the last thing I'd ever want to do is intrude on your work, it was a stupid accident on my part that I somehow made, and I apologize. I always look forward to your having checked my work over and, again, I really appreciate it. Cinerama Comment (talk) 04:51, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More Tillie[edit]

I think we'd be better served with Tillie Wakes Up as the simpler version of the title, without the year being built in, simply because it's such a strange title that I can't imagine another version of it being made, although of course W.C. Fields did re-use the title of the great classic Tillie's Punctured Romance so maybe it's not impossible. On the other hand, I'm eager to defer to whomever created the first version and, out of deference toward the first writer, I'm fine with using the first version of the title. I'll happily leave it up to you, either way seems perfectly fine. Thanks for the superb compliment, by the way, I really appreciate that! Wikipedia is a thankless endeavor most of the time, at least for me, and thanks again. Cinerama Comment (talk) 05:18, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tillie Redux[edit]

Yes, I think this film is so obscure that no one's really going to pay much attention to it and it's better to blank the first one, I guess, than have two gradually converging versions up. Cinerama Comment (talk) 05:35, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing stops others from upgrading the assessment, of course, and it would save us a little bit of time if the "tagger" can also assess. Thanks! Montanabw(talk) 18:32, 29 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP:Japan and WP:Anime and Manga[edit]

Hi, you may not be aware of this, but generally all topics on anime, manga, and the characters or episodes are covered by WP:Anime & Manga, not by WP:Japan. It's some kind of agreement the two projects worked out years ago. You can tag an anime or manga related article with the template {WikiProject Anime and Manga}. Thanks. Ben Hur[edit]

Strange but I've just finished watching Ben Hur and I see you edit it the moment I finished watching it!!. Haven't seen it in years but I think it's probably the greatest film I've ever seen. Lord of the Rings trilogy is the only other film I can think of which I rate so highly.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:15, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Spartacus, West Side Story, Lawrence of Arabia and Tom Jones coming next... I've seen them all but a long time ago. I have L of Arabia on DVD but it's such a long film I rarely watch it. I've been watching every Academy Award winner since 1927.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:30, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What was it you said about whats her name being pure filth, Tila Tequila looks pretty close to such a description...♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:07, 8 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've reached Tom Jones now, about to watch now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:03, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll watch it tomorrow. The Kid (1921 film) is one of my favourites too as is City Lights which I currently have at GAN. Both are brilliantly written and moving.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:05, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great film. very enjoyable! Finney looks so much like Ewan Mcgregor, I had to double take at times. Now I know where Mike Myers got the "Moley, moley, moley" thing and the chess piece foreplay from!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:29, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you not know what I mean when he says "Molly Molly Molly to her by the tree? You did mean the 1963 film right?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:10, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chess Moley

Diane Cilento was wonderfully slutty in the film too. I don't normally find her that attractive either but you can't blame young Tom for his shenanigans!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:14, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, love Audrey Hepburn!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:41, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I know, but Hepburn's one of my favourite actresses and I've enjoyed most of her films. I'm watching Patton at the moment, what do you think of it? It's the sort of film that probably a lot of US senators and official cite as their favorite.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:30, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

He's extremely believable as a US general. He has that John McCain sort of military arrogance about him.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:57, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great film. I wouldn't say it is quite "one of the very best of all time" but it's not far off off that league. The war scenes in particular I found most convincing, frightening the sound of the planes and bombing. I know some people and critics consider it as the greatest film.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:42, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if you've seen A Man For All Seasons and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? but it seems crazy to me that A Man For all Seasons beat it to the Academy Award in '66. Woolf was superbly acted, a Man for all Seasons was rather bland.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:13, 22 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I liked Orson Welles in A Man For All Seasons, but something about Robert Shaw in that garb and John Hurt with the funny eyes and obvious George Harrison haircut and tash of 1966 really unsettled me. I don't like Shaw either, nasty piece of work, didn't like him in the Sting either.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:14, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Any other films which are your favourites?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:31, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More an opera/theatre guy I see. Well, I also generally found the Roger Moore films more enjoyable to watch, so did my father, but as Bond, of course, Connery is my favourite. Dr. No, Goldfinger and OHMSS rank among my favourites though, and I really disliked Moonraker! There aren't many films I can really say "that was a brilliant film". I'd say roughly 30% of films I watch I'd even consider wanting to get it on DVD but I'm happy to have seen most of the films I've watched, there's a lot of films though that you really wouldn't want to see many times. Even Roger Ebert only saw most films once or twice every 20 or 30 years bbut then again he had an extreme amount of films to watch. He must have seen every film!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:27, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen Chariots of Fire? That's next on my list, I've reached 1981 with the Academy Award winners now, having seen most of the 70s ones already.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:39, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, as Lobo was saying, the Academy almost always go for straightforward, simple, uncontroversial dramas. Oliver! for instance is an enjoyable film and good, but to think that it is a better picture than something like Rosemary's Baby or Once Upon a Time in the West of the same year is just silly. And no way was the French Connection better than A Clockwork Orange! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:28, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I used to hate OHMSS because of Lazenby, but everytime I watch it it grows on me. Lazenby aside I think it was one of the better Bond films. Die Another Day is probably the second worst after View To a Kill IMO. Moonraker, the first part with Drax's chateau and the Venini glass, yeah that was good, but the second half was one of Bond's worst moments..♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:10, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't say either Die Another Day nor View to a Kill were bad films. Every Bond film has been good IMO. Just I would consider them two of the weaker Bond entries, Quantum of Solace too. Man with the Golden Gun is one of my favourites but it's usually one of the worst on people's lists. I just thought Bond in space was ridiculous and was inspired by nothing but the obsession with space following the success of Star Wars. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:28, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed completely, Goodnight was one of the worst Bond girls. The film itself wasn't a strong one technically, but Knick Knack and Scaramanga and the exotic Thai location made it thoroughly enjoyable I think and Goodnight and Maud Adams in skimpy bikinis of course didn't harm!. Hehe I still remember starting Richard Loo on here!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:12, 23 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that was the strength of Octopussy, the Monsoon Palace and such, even though the circus thing and Karl Marx Stadt wasn't that great. I suppose the use of Tikal in Moonraker and the cable cars in Brazil was also very good. It was a good film but I think the Bond in space thing as I say really didn't appeal to me.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:17, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Jane Seymour's aged very well...♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:50, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good grief that's 8 other wikis now. Polish wiki from what I recall was one of the scariest wikipedias to category browse though in terms of bulk missing and quality.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:13, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An example Category:Polish film actors, compare to this... Alarming isn't it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:34, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

xxx is a Polish actor. (Poland-actor-stub) sounds good! Just started Amir Chakhmaq Complex anyway, what a spectacular looking building, especially at night!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:01, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nicki Minaj looks even cheaper than Tila I think!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:55, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You've not missed anything by not watching Chariots of Fire. Worst Academy Award winner I've seen to date. Nothing but a bunch of Hooray Henrys. The only good thing about it was its music and the famous theme now played at the Olympics and other events. The actors in the film were extremely unbelievable as athletes let along Olympic athletes and I found that I really didn't care if they won or lost. Even the 1924 Olympics looked like it had been shot on the track in somebody's backyard. My feeling is that the soundtrack tricked the Academy to thinking it was a great film, when it really wasn't. Reds (film) is far far superior and should have won in 1981. It inspired me to write the Hooray article today!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:39, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On Golden Pond, Raiders of the Last Ark, even For Your Eyes only, were more appropriate!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:52, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah they're too commercial for the Oscar. Too much action not enough drama. BTW what are your top 5 favourite operas?♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:53, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How many operas would you say you've seen?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:17, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And what is your most common venue to see them? Just started Lågskär, check out google maps and how many Aland islands are missing!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:47, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you see Amadeus (film)?♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:35, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Emailed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:06, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Use of Category:American novelists[edit]

I noticed you have added the category American novelists to two articles lately; here on 6 Setember 2013 and here on 5 Setember 2013. Per current consensus this category is a container only category and should not directly include any American novelists. You may see a concise explanation at the top of the Category:American novelists article. I have already replaced the category American novelists with the correct by-century categories for Steven Levenkron and Randy G. Pierce. Neonorange (talk) 05:31, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Guggenheim Fellows[edit]

Hello. You seem to have added Category:Guggenheim Fellows to the article Jim Olney, a footballer (soccer player) who died in 1944, because someone called James Olney received the Fellowship in 1980. I do hope you haven't been going round doing this for many people who just happen to share a name, but not necessarily a lifespan, with one of the Fellows... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:05, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization[edit]

I was looking at your contribution list and find we are doing very similar work...only you are categorizing actresses while I'm categorizing male actors. If you are responsible, I am truly impressed...it doesn't matter how small the country is or what century, each one has at least one actress category (and often multiple ones)! It makes my job categorizing male actors so much simpler. I still check each article (because some women have ambiguous names) because there is often no indication what medium the actor works in. It's still many thousands of articles to go through. But I just wanted to know how much I appreciate the work that has been done! Liz Read! Talk! 21:54, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cliff Theater[edit]

Your promptly spotting my upload of the Cliff Theater photos was impressive-- but it was a little disconcerting to find out that you'd already illustrated the NRHP list article. It's selfish of me, I know, but I'd really rather have put in the illustration myself; the diff would've been my reward for the half-tank of gas I burned detouring to Wray to get the photo. You've left me with a rather coitus-interruptus sensation... Ammodramus (talk) 21:10, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I admit that the article calls for a world of expanding-- it's one of those that Doncram created as a two-sentence stub, in the belief that it'd attract scores of edits and additions and cruise to GA status in no time flat. However, somebody else is going to have to do the expanding-- I've got enough work to do in Cornhuskerstan. Ammodramus (talk) 21:27, 24 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there mate, just to quickly check with you, are you sure about this? [4] As far as I know, he had an ongoing kidney condition, but he didn't die from that, he died from a lung infection. Cheers, Azylber (talk) 22:59, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I saw you added this - which I should have done. You put it under Category:Sultans of Oman, which is incorrect. I am not sure how to arrange the related categories. At the time of the Yaruba dynasty Oman was technically a theocracy, with an elected Imam who was both spiritual and temporal leader. In practice, the title of Imam had become inherited. The members of the dynasty were not Sultans - they did not hold that title. They were rulers of the country. Confusingly, several of them had names that included the word "Sultan", but it was a name, not a title, like B.B. King. Later there were rulers who took the title "Sultan of Muscat and Oman" or "Sultan of Oman", but were not Imams. Ghalib Bin Ali was Imam of Oman but not Sultan. Confused? I am. Aymatth2 (talk) 17:29, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like I started the confusion, putting the dynasty under Sultans when I started it, then not fixing that mistake later. It looks right now. I have no idea how you add categories so fast. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 17:52, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Finally Gabon at least has info and poulation data for the communes here! Remember that Gabon was the one country I always wanted to do the Communes and cantons of Gabon for?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:38, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Might be worth looking into, but the departments need adding the communes to and expansion first IMO before starting them. No idea on Guyana, I know there is a list of third-level divisions of Mozambique called Postos which I still need to create sometime User:Dr. Blofeld/Postos Mozambique..♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:43, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Strange coincidence! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:47, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I meant the Estonian music. Check out Table of administrative divisions by country!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:55, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looking about it's not too bad the coverage, but it's the quality of the articles we have which are mostly untouched in years which concerns me. The time needed to expand all of those Brazilian municipalities for instance.. Just came across Areza which you started a while back.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:08, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that rules out most of Africa! I've always asserted that the towns and villages we once started were more notable than people think. Just expanded Areza with what I could find. It's finding the people who care enough about small towns in places like Eritrea who are able to research them is the problem!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:33, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Especially for smaller localities I think, but gradually I think scholars are conducting more research into obscure parts of the world and learning about ethnic groups and localities and practices form the people themselves. The HIstorical Dictionary of Ethiopia + Eritrea 1994 edition for instance has been researched by an Eritrean scholar. All it needs is some of the them to be educated and to do the research and put it in books. Check out this I found earlier [5]. If we could access that sort of thing for every world tribe or locality!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:53, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks. I learned a lot too. To me random articles like these are a form of verbal jigsaw puzzle. I start from total ignorance and try to fit together what the sources say into some sort of coherent write-up. Just a hobby. Harmless, I hope. Thanks again. Spruce Budworm[edit]

Hi, I see that you have added a category to Spruce Budworm suggesting that this bug is to be found in Gambia. The references currently provided by the article do not suggest that this is the case. In the interests of promoting good editing, may I ask where this information comes from? Happy editing. Gaius Cornelius (talk) 14:10, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to this page: more specifically it's Choristoneura occidentalis, which is a redirect to that page. Which do you think is more worthwhile - removing the category from the page, or adding a reference to the specific species link showing where it lives? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:49, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know anything about insects in general and even less about this one in particular. I am not sure what to suggest; of course adding a reference would be appropriate provided the information is accurate and my trouble is that something about this does not seem right at all. The article really needs an expert hand. 09:28, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
I know at least as much about insects as you do...maybe even less. Perhaps I'll go ahead and add the reference short-term, and see what comes of it. And you're right - there's something a little odd about it, but it seems sourced, so I'll let it stand for the nonce. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that it's the only "fauna by" category on that page? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:50, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Films[edit]

If you have time can you also tag the ones in the template with [6]?♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:33, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen The Taming of the Shrew (1967 film)? Sure you'd enjoy it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:52, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A great film. So much fun!! Richard Burton is a blast in it as a lovable rogue and Elizabeth Taylor virtually at her best in terms of looks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:10, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with her, I mean compare his filmography to somebody like Charlton Heston or Gregory Peck. I find most of his films enjoyable but as enjoyable as The Taming of the Shrew is I think yeah Virginia Wolff is the only one you could really put in the top class of films among the best of all time.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:27, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Clift? A bit wet. I enjoy most of his films like From here to Eternity, A Place in the Sun. Suddenly Last Summer etc but John Wayne is a good judge of character and I think he was right about Clift not being an impressive man. Actually looking through Charlton Heston's filmography he didn't appear in too many truly great films either. Obviously ones like Ben Hur and The Big Country stand out though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:39, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I think he was a bit of a wet blanket compared to some of the alpha male actors of his era but I still think he was a very good actor and enjoy his films.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:42, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've done a basic overview of films I've watched and I'd say that Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Humphrey Bogart, Tom Hanks, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Ingrid Bergman are among those actors who I enjoy virtually every film they're in, especially Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn who I think are my favourite actor/actress. Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart for me stand out as having the most films which were good. I mean can you recall a film with either of them in which wasn't good? They made what were sometimes technically average films good by their charisma and presence. Gary Cooper on the other hand admittedly I find a lot of his films boring.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:52, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah Powell was one of the reasons why I'm so fond of The Great Ziegfeld which I got up to GA. I like his wit and sarcastic sense of humor. Have you seen Life with Father? Just great. Henry Fonda's performances in films like Young Mr. Lincoln, The Grapes of Wrath, 12 Angry Men, Once Upon a Time in the West, On Golden Pond I thought were brilliant, especially 12 Angry Men.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:03, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's his voice and demeanour which appeals to me I think. Jimmy Stewart and Gregory Peck also.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:09, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ivanhoe (1952 film) is probably the worst Liz Taylor film I've seen.♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:14, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah it was really not good, rather a cheap historical production if you ask me. The Robe on the other hand with Burton is one of the best historical epics I've seen aside from a few character flaws.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:10, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah that's the one. I enjoyed it although not as good as Ben Hur obviously! I thought it was much better than Spartacus and Julius Caesar anyway. Kirk Douglas was way too rough and brash to play a convincing Roman!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:45, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Really rather scary isn't it what one can compile on things like 133rd Street (Manhattan) and the potential red links!! Nearly every article I start turns up a ton of red links!! In turn it makes me think of missing potential articles like Prohibition in New York City, History of jazz in Harlem etc...♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:26, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't believe that even articles like Harlem are in such a haphazard state. ou think how many book sources exist on it and what does it have? Half of the notable NYC streets are redirects. It's beginning to give me a headache how much work is needed to improve existing articles and what is missing...♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:35, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Who'd have thought that a small town in Djibout like Yoboki you'd have that many sources!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:03, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It was definitely a falling rain type of place back in about 2008.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:10, 6 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Another of yours has been expanded, Loyada..♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:28, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you use AWB to remove the see also sections of Kenya for the counties like this. There's a nav template at the bottom of all so it's redundant.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:13, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you use AWB to add Template:Copenhagen to the bottom of articles in it? I've expanded Msambweni and nommed for GA! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:35, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent, thanks. Did you say you've seen How to Steal a Million? Been a while since I saw it. Great film isn't it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:57, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going through Audrey's filmography at the moment. Not a film of hers I dislike. I adore her so much!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:00, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I think The Nun's Story was her best performance, I agree with Loeba on that one. Not my favourite role of hers though, I rather liked her roles in Roman Holiday, Sabrina and even My Fair Lady more. Roman Holiday is in my top 10 of all time.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:21, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That was odd O'Toole died yesterday as we were discussing him! What did you think of War and Peace (1956 film)? I don't think Fonda was right for the role, he didn't look right on screen in it. I can think of more suited actresses than Audrey to the role too however sweet she was in it. The film overall though was OK.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:07, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it's difficult not to like Audrey in anything. Fonda definitely wasn't right for the role though and I'm quite a fan of him as an actor.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:20, 16 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen this advert? I love it, CGI or not.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:43, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Christmas BTW!! Have you seen The Red Shoes? Watching it now!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:20, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I can't say I thought much of it. I was expecting something a bit more gripping.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:19, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categorisation of insects by country[edit]

I've started a discussion of this topic at WikiProject Insects as we could end up with very many categories per article which may not be helpful. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:33, 27 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article tagging[edit]

Please do not continue to tag redirects for U.S. Roads. This is adding to our unassessed backlog, as well as resulting in filling Category:U.S._road_transport_articles_without_a_state_parameter. --Rschen7754 05:41, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
