Camp Lazlo episodes[edit]

Aloha. IMO, most notable television series have episode articles, so I don't think there's a need for a merge or deletion, although I'm sure you can find someone who will disagree. What the page(s) do need is categorization. --Viriditas | Talk 10:20, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Voice actor[edit]

Your solution sounds like a good one, however, it will create two external links (the first one being the name of the article) instead of one external and one internal link. This doesn't sound like a problem, and if someone doesn't like it they can easily change it back, and your comment on Template talk:Voice actor provides a record of your decision to make the change which is always a great idea, so it sounds like you're on the right path. As for Wikipedia:Template messages/All, good catch--you're right--there's a lot of templates missing. I've been aware of this for some time, but I haven't done anything about it. It might be best to post a query on Wikipedia talk:Template messages/All. Millbrae Station[edit]

Hi - thanks for your message on my talk page. I just happened to notice the Millbrae link on the SFO page and thought, hey, isn't there an article on the actual BART station? So I went looking for it, and it does appear in the article List of Bay Area Rapid Transit stations which is linked to in the "See also" section of the main BART article. (I remembered that from a previous edit.) Sometimes finding things in Wikipedia can be very challenging! :-) Also, I'm from the immediate area (lived in Burlingame, went to high school in Millbrae) and keep track of all the local stuff.

I think Wikipedia style is to wikilink the first mention of anything and then leave it plain elsewhere, but like everything else around here it's not set in stone. Best, --MCB 19:58, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

SF Bay Area categories[edit]

At first I thought Category:Milpitas was empty (I was looking at the wrong link), but it's got a bunch of appropriate articles in it, so I guess it's legitimate. Most cities are not subcats, but I guess this is a good case.

As for the Peninsula, I guess it could be a subcat of Category:San Francisco Bay Area which is a subcat of Category:California, but I can't think of a really compelling reason for it; any articles could just be in a city or county category or directly in Category:San Francisco Bay Area... Sources for Flatiron Building (San Francisco)[edit]

Hello, good work on Flatiron Building (San Francisco), and thanks for the contribution. However, you forgot to add any references to the article. Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. What websites, books, or other places did you learn the information that you added to Flatiron Building (San Francisco)? Would it be possible for you to mention them in the article? Griffith, Indiana article weirdness[edit]

Hi, I had a look at the article you mentioned on my talk page, and did some editing. I'm not sure if it was vandalism, per se, but it definitely fell under WP:NPOV. I removed some of the obvious things (like "My great great great Grandparents <did whatever>.."), and added a Template:Npov-section tag in the section, so hopefully someone else who knows more about the area can give a more thorough cleaning. No problem! I'm not positive about this, but I think that the user doesn't get the handy "new messages" box if the comment isn't on their talk page. D'oh!! - Thanks for cleaning up after me![edit]

These are from my deleted edits file. All of these are errors on my part made while I was patrolling for vandalism. Because of nice message sent by The HorsePunchKid (whom I have thanked repeatedly) I managed to do only a small amount of damage. A few other people used their valuable time to revert some of my errors and I am grateful to them all, as well.

Your firendly neighborhood "subst"[edit]

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Film wikiproject tag[edit]

Unless a criteria was created that I missed, I don't believe the Films Wikiproject tage needs to be added to articles where a film is mentioned in passing, otherwise there are probably thousands of articles where this could be done. If there wasn't already an I Spy film article the I'd agree to put one in with TV show article, but there is. Same goes for Mission Impossible - we don't need a Film tag on the TV series article as there are separate articles on the three films. Cheers. 23skidoo 12:17, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dazed and confused[edit]

The disambiguation page was originally at Hayward (disambiguation) and I moved it to Hayward. There is rationale in the guidelines for this, as explained on the talk page of Malplaced disambiguation pages.

Now, about the "hatnote" (For other places with the same name, see Hayward (disambiguation)) at Hayward, California. Firstly, it's not needed and in my opinion (and most people except for a few I think) and it should be removed. Someone found their way to Hayward, California from a direct link or a search or the disambiguation page. If they came from the disambiguation page they can use the "Back" button on their browser, no need for the extraneous hatnote.

Using templates for hatnotes: don't feel you are restricted to those crumby templates. You can simply replace the template with text.--Commander Keane 21:19, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy, just so you know, I merely formatted what was in this article. I didn't add any additional information. I think I did remove one line that seemed out-of-place. Even though I don't particularly care for the topic, I treated it as objectively as I could. Most of my edits are made for spelling, formatting, punctuation, and such. Excellent point, but frankly I DO NOT read every article that I edit. That is, the level of editing that I do is simply mechanical. I see the need for spacing and I put in spacing. I see a misspelled word and I correct it (within a sentence's context). I do not feel qualified to pass judgement on the content of much of what I edit. The procedures for deletion, copyright protection, blah-blah-blah is stuff I leave for people who are worried about those sort of thing. I know my place in the Wiki-world. I have no desire to be part of any edit war or huge philosophical discussions about how articles should be written or what they should contain. I do some mindless editing that the previous contributors missed. The one thing I noticed is that whenever I touch an article, someone is VERY LIKELY to take a look at it. That is, there are a LOT of people paying attention to "RECENT CHANGES" watching for vandalism and such. I figure if someone objects to the actual content, then it will be dealt with at that time. As long as I am ranting, how much "critical reading" do I put in when it is loaded with inane information on anime or sleazy X-rated garbage that is created every day? Where does the line get drawn? When do we censor articles? Only when it involves libel? How many one-song bands, incidentally are loaded with grammatical, spelling and standardization errors, should I simply delete as unimportant? I thought I would wait until editing slowed a bit, I found a few minor nits, and then it got hammered again. I believe an article has to be relatively stable to be a featured article and so I think it fails that test. Dates on video game pages[edit]

Redirect bypassation[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you made an edit to bypass a redirect at Perl. However, WP:REDIRECT specifically forbids editing solely to avoid redirects - it introduces needsless verbiage at a net heavier load on the servers. Pointless cause[edit]

Hello, Thanks for your message. Don't be put off by him. Every now and then a group of editors champion some pointless cause trying to tell other people not to use one editing technique or other. Sooner or later it is always "discovered" that it didn't make any difference whatsoever. In fact issues relating to technical performance are the domain of technical staff not editorial policy.

The only thing that would be 'harmful' is if you fixed [[London, England|London]] automatically and created [[London|London]]. That would be clearly stupid and is the only case I can think of where fixing redirects would be 'bad'. Mrsteviec 07:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Filmography[edit]

When I first started editing articles I borrowed heavily from IMDb, but then I realized that wasn't fair to IMDb (not to mention copyright issues). My feeling is that "Filmographies" should be limited (mostly) to wikilinks to articles that already exist. Lists of movies with dates and character names (and ....) are usually copied directly from IMDb or at least duplicate that effort. Are there any guidelines for the Filmography section? Thanks! You have previously edited the Rebbecca Cummings article. The article has been put up for deletion. I would like your unbiased input on the article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rebecca Cummings.

She may not be the most notable person on Wikipedia but she fits the notability criteria from the Wikipedia guideline Wikipedia:Notability (pornographic actors). Her notability is listed in her article and restated at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rebecca Cummings.

Given the privacy discussion about birthdates which led the the privacy requirement in WP:BLP, could I ask you to please refrain from adding that category to biographies of living people? At least until we have final resolution on the appropriateness of the category? This isn't a legal issue but several people feel that it's a moral obligation to keep the exact date of birth (though not the year) out of Wikipedia for most biographies of living people. Thanks. Category:California-related lists[edit]

I don't really like working on categories, so I'm glad to see anyone doing some categorization of some of the California-based articles. ;-)
On the other hand, I came across an article yesterday that was in Category:Festivals in California. I then looked at the category, which only had about a half-dozen articles in it, so I ended up spending a couple of hours looking for music festivals, film festivals, etc. that were in California to add to the category. Usually all I do for categorization is delete 'parent' categories if I see there is also a more specific 'daughter' category.
For external links, the Wikipedia is not doing a good job of staying on top of the abuse. On the other hand, all that I usually do is deleting single bad links that show up on my watchlist, and take the occasional weed whacker to overflowing External links sections. Surprisingly, I've receieved very few complaints about my link deletions (and even those few complaints are odd ones—such as 'why can't I have a link to my Spanish-language website on a Japanese poet?'). Hey! Just a note that {{FilmsWikiProject}} is a redirect to {{Film}}. It may be easier for you to type {{Film}} because it is shorter. Another little note, you don't have to put a horizontal line (----) after the template because it is supposed to be set apart by the box and the color. While I agree with the rest of your edit, I just thought I'd point out that by changing [[United States|USA]] to simply [[USA]] you caused the link to go to a redirect instead of directly to the page for United States. Article evaluations[edit]

Thanks for your positive feedback on the evaluations. Yes, i think there needs to be more evaluation and more posting of rationales for evaluations. I spend most of my evaluation efforts (about 97 percent of it) on evaluations of articles that I have had no editing involvement. I have evaluated about 800 different articles at this point. I have cut back on this activity after some unnecessarily virulent and unproductive discussions ensued on talk pages. If people want to change ratings i feel they should do so by posting rationales. Some editors seem to enjoy just criticising ratings without constructive edits of their own, (which is fine if the criticism is rational and to the point). In any case i appreciate your encouragement, since I am aware of your strong contributions as an editor, and perhaps this will stimulate me to do more ratings once again. Best regards. Orphaned fair use image (Image:EerieIndiana.jpg)[edit]

DEFAULTSORT[edit]

Hi Schmiteye, I have noticed you have been adding the DEFAULTSORT template to articles recently. Just to let you know that this feature is a magic word and not a template, and the correct construction is {{DEFAULTSORT:Sortkey}} rather than {{DEFAULTSORT|Sortkey}}, using ":" instead of "|". The template was created to prevent confusion and shouldn't be used if possible. Thanks, mattbr 11:16, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The functionality that sets the default sort key is a MediaWiki feature and is built into the software, rather than into a template. It is a magic word, like {{PAGENAME}}, and they use ':' rather than '|' when something can be defined, as using '|' will call a template. Because magic words are not as widely understood as templates, when it was first introduced not so long ago people were using '|' because the magic word is constructed almost identically to a template, and people were getting a red link trying to call a template that didn't exist. Template:DEFAULTSORT was created so people didn't see the red link and get confused, and the template just calls the magic word. There's more on this and why the template shouldn't be used on Template talk:DEFAULTSORT.
Regarding the sorting you have been seeing, I don't know why people would sort like that, especially for a birth category; it might just be someone who is not familiar with the syntax for including categories and confusing it for that used for links. Some categories are sorted differently, but that is rare and would be consistent across most of the pages in the category, and in this case, I think it would be safe to change it. Duquesne Dukes Category[edit]

Hey- It's quite possible I used the template incorrectly. I'm not very good at coding things, and that's been the only way I've figured out to make the category lists show up. I don't know any other/better methods, of which there probably are some, so I've just gone with it as a stopgap solution. DEFAULTSORT - finding articles[edit]

I noticed you've done a lot of work on adding the DEFAULTSORT magic word to biographical articles. I was wondering if you are working from a list, or just adding it as you go along? Also, do you have a script or AWB-type tool for doing this sort of thing (cleaning up the category pipes at the same time)? I've tried to find a way of identifying all biographical articles without DEFAULTSORT, but have not had any luck so far. The closest I've come is the plans I am helping to make for a bot to read data from articles with {{WPBiography}} on their talk pages, and for the bot to then copy existing DEFAULTSORT data over to the talk page as the listas parameter of WPBiography. That template will (eventually) populate Category:Biography articles without listas parameter, which (if the bot keeps the DEFAULTSORT and listas the same) will effectively be a list of articles lacking DEFAULTSORT. Howdy, I have taken some time away from editing and just now saw your message. Basically I find articles without DEFAULTSORT by finding errors in categories. There are several common errors that I find that I "fix" by adding DEFAULTSORT and then cleaning up the cats. That would be great if someone could come up with a better method. I can also tell by looking at a broad stub category. If I find a a name out of order, then I can be sure there is no DEFAULTSORT. If I look at non-stub categories, then it is possible that there was just a syntax error in the cat directive, so I fix those errors. Hope this helps! Schmiteye 03:57, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
