Hello fellow radio station article aficionado...

So, a bunch of years ago, I came across a website (I think as a Google search result) that was interesting. The focus of the guy who ran it was streaming radio, back in the days before every station had an online feed. But it was a side project that he'd done that caught my eye — he'd had a bee in his bonnet about concentration of ownership, and had done a bunch of work to figure out (at least for the big companies) which licensees belonged to which company. I found it really helpful in some navbox and categorization work that I was doing, and actually reached out to him a couple of times when I found connections that he'd missed. He used that info to update his databases, and an occasional collaboration was born.

I touch base with him every once in a while. He's an ex-Wikipedian — got turned off by some of the approach to things back about a decade ago — but he still has a lot of respect for the work that people put in, and he's interested in helping people keep it up to date. He updates his database daily based on the FCC info, so it's a unique opportunity to uncover interesting stuff. For example, a few years back, he built a page on his site for me that just tracks call sign changes — makes it a whole lot easier to jump on those before people have a chance to mess them up (particularly swaps).

Most recently, he was telling me that he's doing a station-by-station review of his data, as some of the non-FCC stuff has gotten stale. We talked about how that could spin off, and as a result, he's built a page that summarizes the changes he's making. Alongside that, he's actually able to identify where some of the info on Wikipedia for the station is outdated or missing. It pops up a range of stuff - articles that haven't been created is a lot of it right now, but also dead/missing/outdated websites, streams, licensees, formats, branding, etc.

I know you do some article creation. Don't know if there's any magic in how you decide what you want to work on, but if you're interested, this page is helpful. It'll give you website addresses and formats without having to go looking for them, so you can flesh out the basic FCC information more easily.

So, if you'd like to give it a look or use it, you'll find it at https://streamingradioguide.com/adm/change-list.php. Check the "Include Editor" and "Wikipedia needs update" boxes at the top of the page, and it'll filter the list down to just the stuff that's relevant for us. Then, if you create an article or update the incorrect/outdated information, just check the box in the "Fixed?" column for that row, and then click the Update button and it'll go away. Don't check that otherwise, though. :>)

I'm not listing this on the project page right now — only on the talk pages of some of the more experienced editors who I'm confident won't mess things up for him. But if you get some use out of it, let me know — I'm sure he'd be interested if usage spreads beyond just me. I'm only one man with only so much time... Mlaffs (talk) 23:29, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I promoted your Stephen King hook to the quirky slot. But "Stephen King killed a radio station" doesn't make sense; usually we say that an author "kills off" a character. So I changed it to: ... that Stephen King killed off a radio station in Bangor, Maine? Is that okay with you? Yoninah (talk) 22:32, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

@Yoninah: Yeah, that makes more sense. That's what I was going for. Raymie (tc) 22:35, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
Great, thanks! Yoninah (talk) 22:40, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Template:Mexican TV by channel number

Maybe I was wrong in trying to find a solution for the six links to disambiguation pages on Template:Mexican TV by channel number but reinstating them in also a very, very bad idea. I have now unlinked them.

May I suggest that you add a bit to your personal CSS (Preferences/Appearance)?

.mw-disambig { background-color:#AFEEEE; }

Effect of this is that links to disambiguation pages get a blue background, making them easier to spot. The Banner talk 08:08, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

  • @The Banner: I actually have a gadget/preference that makes them orange. The thing is that sections like Channel 21#Mexico exist because they would result in short lists at page titles such as "Channel 21 virtual TV stations in Mexico". Particularly for high virtual channel numbers, there are only a handful of unique stations using them (two for 21). We could avoid the dablinks by creating the stubs again, though I note that each would have two to three entries. Raymie (tc) 08:12, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
  • You can actually make use of the system you have used at channel 20: the number unlinked and the channels between brackets, no problem there with red links. The Banner talk 09:01, 26 August 2019 (UTC)
  • The thing is that 20 only has one service using it. I might have no choice but to bloat up the template a bit... Raymie (tc) 18:09, 26 August 2019 (UTC)

A puppy for you!
