AfC news

Dear AfC participant,

  1. Msgj and Tnxman307 are organising the AfC challenge! It's a little competition to help improve some of the articles created through AfC and we are hoping that everyone will get involved. For level 1, you just need to bring a stub up to Start-class. Level 2 is improving a Start-class article to C-class. And so on. To get involved or for more information please see the competition page.
  2. Those of you who haven't reviewed an article recently might not have noticed the new process that was implemented this year. Reviewing articles is now more enjoyable than ever :) You might like to give it a try. All articles waiting for review are in Category:Pending Afc requests. (Please read the updated instructions.)
  3. Please consider adding {{AFC status}} to your userpage to keep track of the number of articles waiting for review. At the time of writing we are officially backlogged, so help is needed!
  4. There is currently a proposal to bring the Images for upload process under the umbrella of WikiProject Articles for creation. The rationale is that both processes are designed to allow unregistered users to take part more fully in Wikipedia, and partipants in each process can probably help each other.

If you no longer wish to receive messages from WikiProject Articles for creation, please remove your name from this list. Thank you.

Candidate new article review

I have drafted a candidate new article on educational publisher Curriculum Associates. The draft is posted on my talk page: frankatca. The article is factual, NPOV, and has citation references. I am unclear as to what else it needs in the way of improvement before I post it. Your comments and suggestions for improvement are solicited. Tnank you. Frank E. Hi. It's good that you're helping to tidy up some of the more fringe articles in the Invincibles push. And I know you work very fast. But can you be a bit careful, please, about ensuring you don't change meanings in some of the rewording? There were a couple of instances in this article. It wasn't the collapse of a Test that led to Johnson's giving up cricket administrative roles, but the collapse of the Barnes trial. And Johnson wasn't appointed as manager of the Australian Services team in 1945 by Hassett (nor does Wisden say that); I suspect, but don't know for certain, that Hassett's appointment as captain (which was a bit controversial as he was junior in services rank to several other players) may have been a result of Johnson's appointment, rather than the other way around. Actually, the real need on this article and on others in the Invincibles list that haven't quite made it yet to GA or FA status (Loxton etc) is for extra information, and not so much changing around what is already there. If you could find out Johnson's full birthdate, or what his career outside cricket was, for instance... Kind regards. Johnlp (talk) 15:45, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Request

My old friend, how are you? I have a special request. You know that I'm not for nominating my articles for "FA" nor "GA"'s, but someone nominated my Black history of Puerto Rico for FAC, see:Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Black history in Puerto Rico. I won't object to that, however the article is in need of a complete copyedit and some fixes. I feel like a blind man trying to organize a dark room. I thought about you and your excellent work and I was wondering if you could help me and those who nominated the article with the copyediting and whatever you believe needs fixing. Take care. Tony the Marine (talk) 19:33, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

  • I'm doing fine. I hope that you are also. The "First Indochina War" will be your dissertation project, I know that you will do a great job. In regard to the "Black history of Puerto Rico", feel free to do and make whatever changes or edits that you believe need be done. I have complete trust in your judgement my friend. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:21, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

I noticed that you edited the Allen Stanford article with the statement that Stanford has been arrested. I do not see a citation for that claim. Is this true? What are you using for your claim? Please advise.--InaMaka (talk) 19:33, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

If he has been charged by a law enforcement agency, he has to have been arrested. I can change it to charge to fit the sources exactly. SGGH ping! 21:09, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
No, not necessarily. People are indicted or charged all the time without being arrested. I already changed the wording to "charged." As of this evening, Allen Stanford has not been arrested. A charge or an indictment does not necessarily mean arrest. Let's just leave the wording, for right now, at "charged" because that is what the situation is, not arrested. Besides, he might not be arrested as such if he chooses to turn himself in to a law enforcement agency. Or he might play the dual citizenship angle and attempt to fight extradition to the U.S. Right now, we just don't know and it is better to be right side of BLP.--InaMaka (talk) 03:05, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Edgar Smith

SGGH, I am the author of the Edgar Smith article you relied upon completely to write your article, without even referencing my name. While writing that article, I went to libraries and got articles from microfilm. I wrote to William F. Buckley. I wrote to Edgar Smith. I interviewed the California prosecutor and the son of the NJ prosecutor. I bought old magazines and books from e-Bay. I bought newspaper articles from internet digital archives. I did all this to write an entertaining, accurate true story, not to write something you could crib from and then dismissively describe as being biased and not NPOV. It's not my job to be NPOV. It's my job to do the work, do the research, and then back up my arguments. If you want original news articles, please email the editor at crimemagazine, he will email me, and I'll send you a Lexis-Nexis of Edgar Smith articles. Both crimemagazine and my articles in it have been referenced by other Wiki articles.Lonalee (talk) 04:55, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I am trying to recreate the page for David Choi. His page has been deleted several times for a few different reasons. ONe being that the page was blatant advertising. Another because the page didn't have enough sources to back of the information and the facts were thought to be false. Anoth time it was deleted because it was felt he was not a person of value to be placed on the wiki. I have reasearched him and put together alot of facts regarding him. As far as his worth, I think I have put enough things and sources to back them up to prove that. I wanted to message you because since you are one of the people who has deleted his page in the past I was hoping that you might find time to look over the page and see that it is accurate, and well written. This is also my first Wiki page and I read the rules, and formatting information over MANY times before creating the page. Please feel free to make me aware of any issues with the page, as I would like to adhear to all of the rules of the site, while being able share information about this artist. When I created the page I did not capatolize the last name. When I went to move it I noticed the long history of deletion and the fact that the David Choi page was blocked. I do not wish to step on any toes in this situation but I am new to WP and do not know the proper procedures for unblocking a page. If my newly created page is even worthy of being left up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am leaving this message for everyone on the deletion log of the page, not for redundancy but I do not wish to offend/upset anyone who feels this page should have been deleted in the past. Thanks, Chip MileHighCFI (talk) 01:20, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm glad to see someone is working on the Hussey article. I'm a bit stretched at the moment, but in a few days I'll come back and be pleased to give it the once-over. Brianboulton (talk) 21:15, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

A couple of quick thoughts: Shackleton's book South has multiple mentions of Hussey on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition. This is available on-line via Project Gutenberg. Another ebook is Frank Wild's. "Shackleton's last voyage: The Story of the Quest". which has lots about Hussey's role in the Shackleton-Rowett expedition. I'm not at all sure, however, that the image of Hussey is PD in the USA; it isn't from Shackleton's book and there is no information that it was published anywhere before 1923. If necessary an image of Hussey can be cropped from the Weddell Sea party group photo, as was done with Harry McNish. Brianboulton (talk) 18:04, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
The "List of..." article is not one of mine. Other images used there are questionable. This will only really become an issue if/when your article is in some formal review process. It may be worth pinging one of the regular WP image reviewers, such as User:Jappalang, and asking his opinion of your Hussey picture which, I agree, is much to be preferred. Brianboulton (talk) 10:38, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

As a younster I participated in many "Shackleton-Hussey" competitions; these were overnight events run by Rickmansworth and Chorleywood Scouts comprising orienteering around a circular route and undertaking a variety of challenges at checkpoints en route. I recall the event was inaugurated by Hussey, who if I recall correctly, was a one-time resident of Chorleywood and inspired by the events of the Endurance expedition. The arduousness of the S-H competition was such that younger Scouts were not allowed to participate, but demand from them was such that a junior version, named Nimrod after another S-H expedition, was instituted. A quick google (to check my mind isn't playing tricks) revealed this confirmation, which also explains the link to Ralph Gullett, whose name I vaguely recall from my youth. The S-H competion struck me as a fitting tribute to both gentlemen, and is perhaps worthy of a footnote in the article. -- Timberframe (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
