Wikipedia and copyright[edit]

To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license.   • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Could you please explain how it is that you uploaded two images as your "own work"; these are a logo that was a logo authored by "Sanitary Tortilla Factory" but credited as your own work; the other is an image of the facade in 2017, credited as your "own work" but has Sheri Crider as the author of the work. I uploaded them but did not create them or do I own copyright to the images. I emailed the owner via their website and received permission to share them. Is that not ok, or should I delete them? RoxastheRoxxor (talk) 22:38, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That information needs to be sent to the Creative Commons Volunteer Response Team by the actual copyright holder. Just word of mouth that someone got permission is not enough - we are an encyclopedia. Otherwise it's a copyright law violation. However, did Crider purchase the original logo from M&J's and had the copyright transfered to her or was it a newly created logo? And was permission received from the muralist, or did Crider also paint the mural?
As to the COI, since you have been coordinating with gallery and copyright owner, you are indeed a connected editor. You need to follow our guidelines, and stop editing the articles directly, and instead use the edit request system. Please read WP:COI to learn the exact policies/guidelines. Thank you for the your concern. I will delete the uploaded images from Wiki, and defer that the copyright holder submit as I don't have the information requested. On a side note, I just have to say that your tone is completely unprofessional and makes me not want to participate in further articles, especially if this is how you talk to new editors. Sorry if my tone was too direct or seemed blunt. I work with a lot of new editors helping to improve articles and have found that direct communication is usually best. It's wasn't direct or blunt, the language used was exclusionary. I appreciate the apology, I'm new to this and want to contribute to the community about subjects I'm passionate about. @RoxastheRoxxor, I don't make up the "rules" around here, the community does through the process of consensus. There is so much to learn about how WP functions and it's policies and guidelines - it took me years and I am still learning! The reason for that is we are an encyclopedia, not just a website. Thank you for creating the article. I hope you like the improvements made to develop the historical and cultural background of the Sanitary Tortilla Factory going back to the 1930s. I was able to find a lot of sources on Newspapers.com, and there are more available, too. M&J's supported the arts going way back, so it is a nice legacy for the current art space in the building. I was able to find a copyright-free image of the gallery on Flickr which I added to the gallery section. Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Sheri Crider. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Liz Read!
