In the scouting's interest, would you care to respond to FAC for Baden-Powell House

Hi Randy as an active member of the Scouting wikiproject, would you care to respond to the wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Baden-Powell House. Any comment, either supportive or suggestions for improvement and similar feedback will be appreciated. Wim van Dorst (Talk) 16:11, 1 July 2006 (UTC).

Thanks!

Thank you for your support of the FAC for Cryptography, which became a featured article today. I appreciate your effort and attention! Mangojuicetalk 19:50, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the non-combative notice--I'm sorry I caused trouble.

Unfortunately I was unable to see any differences whatsoever when I tested it. And I really mean I saw no difference: not even the ones I expected. Might have had something to do with the MediaWiki internal caches. Is there any way you know of that I can test a format without risking mayhem in the progress? --Gutza T T+ 21:08, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I don't know how to do that. Rlevse 21:39, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

I have to ask you something

How do you get a linkbox on your user page/subpages? You know, the group of links at the top of your page? -- Kschwerdt514 21:22, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

You have to make subpages of your user page, such as "User:Kschwerdt514/linkbox", "User:Kschwerdt514/User template", "User:Kschwerdt514/Talk Template", etc. You can copy the code from my pages if you like, but please don't change any of my pages. Look at the templates I'm pulling in on my various pages and you can see how it works. BTW, in the linkbox, you can switch between male.png and female.png. Rlevse 21:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Virginia Beach City Public Schools

Hello Rlevse,

I appreciate the recent changes you made to VBCPS articles, including Frank W. Cox High School. However, I do think that instead of the logo or seal, an actual picture of the school building would make more sense, as a photograph is better illustrative of a building tied to an institution that its seal is. I am considering switching back to the actual image of the school, but I'm also looking into methods to display both a picture and a logo, much like in Template:Infobox City.

It is also worth noting that it's highly possible that logos are copyrighted, and with the growing anti-fair-use sentiment on en.wp, it might not be a good idea to use them extensively. —UED77 23:05, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

There is a special image tag for logos that is in wide use, so I see no problem there. I think the VB schools should be consistent and display a logo as that is much more representative of a school that a photo of a building, which almost no one will recognize, so I disagree on that point. Do schools teams wear the logo or a pic of the building? Do the Dallas Cowboys have a star or a pic of their stadium on their helmet? Rlevse 23:22, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
While there is indeed a logo copyright tag based on the fair use rationale, there are ongoing discussions in the Village Pump and on mailing lists about abandoning the use of fair use images and eventually deleting them. However, since there are no problems at the moment, they can stay until that happens. However, regarding the pictures, while I agree with you in that it is primarily the logo that serves to identify the institution, the buildings themselves serve as minor landmarks in their respective cities, and they should be depicted, if not for else then for reference, especially if such pictures are already available, as was the case with Cox.
Most institutions are tied to fixed buildings, say, sporting teams, for example, as they typically play at one specific arena, and are invariably associated with that place. In the case of many big-city teams, the team would have an article, and in most cases, so would the arena, and both articles would mention each other. In the case of schools, where neither the notability nor the availability of infomation warrants to separate articles, care should be made to mention both the institution and the bulding, illustrated, if possible. Yet, I am not expressly seeking to switch the logo for a photo, but rather find a way to display both. —UED77 23:48, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Displaying both would be okay and I could care less about the arguments on fair use as fair use is legal under US law.Rlevse 23:51, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Eagle Scout

The Version 0.5 system is imperfect; disagreements are inevitable. I did not approve Kylie Minogue, Sharon Tate, and Rebecca Clarke. But I would approve a more general article about Scouting. Maurreen 16:00, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

"Imperfect" that's an understatement. V0.5 has an article on prison experiments. So choice is left to luck of the draw as to which reviewer you get and lower quality B articles are chosen and yet you lose out on FA KEY articles on a highly esteemed achievement? What a farce. Rlevse 16:04, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
I had already responded at Wikipedia_talk:Version_0.5_Nominations#FLAWED_PROCESS. Maurreen 17:26, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
There is a good chance seeing the talk page that Eagle Scout may make it in the 0.5. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 05:41, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip. My goal wasn't to get them to change their mind, but to point out the bad flaws in the system and inconsistent standards; which as you saw, really ticked me off. Rlevse 09:51, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Bhumibol Adulyadej

Yes, I'll try and take a look at this when I get a chance. I'm going to be very busy over the next couple of days, then I can look at it on Sunday night or early next week, is that OK? As for picture and current event tags I really have no idea, in my field (chemistry) we've seen little of that, and most of my editing work has been trying to raise mediocre articles to A or B-Class, not much with the FA procedure. You really started something over at Talk:V0.5N, didn't you! Walkerma 18:46, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Jamboree

Would appreciate any comment on proposed merge over at Talk:United States National Scout Jamboree --Gadget850 ( Ed) 16:00, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

I quite agree, there are problems with the text in this article too, but I thought it was worth putting it on hold for the images to get sorted out before making a thorough review, on the grounds that if the images don't get sorted out then it's not even in the running. Sorry I didn't put it on hold on the noms page - good spot. TheGrappler 19:26, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

I've made a bunch of progress on the article

  • Found evidence and rewrote best high school in america section
  • reordered pictures
  • changed the citations for the better
  • Discipline and student culture section and some parts of the intro are really the only parts needing work. With a little advice it should easily be a good article.

check it out and tell me what you think. Andman8 02:27, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

GA icons and such

Well, you're going about this in the wrong order ;-)

What you should do:

  1. Start a central discussion on whether GAs should be marked on the article page. Do not do this on one of the GA pages itself, but rather in an uninvolved location (e.g. Wikipedia:Marking good articles).
  2. Advertise the discussion widely on the Village Pump, on related process pages, on the centralized discussions template, on the RFC lists, etc.
  3. Wait for a consensus to emerge.
  4. Be prepared to compromise if the consensus is against your particular proposal.

In general, I have no particular opinion on whether some tag should be there, but I do think that using the FA star (regardless of the color) is confusing for readers, and suggests a formal relationship between the FA and GA processes that simply isn't there.

On a somewhat related note, two suggestions about making the GA process more palatable to Wikipedia at large:

  1. Stabilize the process. The current debate over how disputes should be handled isn't exactly reflecting well on it as something stable enough to be presented so prominently to readers.
  2. Try to restrain your supporters from wanton attacks on the FA system (e.g. "FA is waste of time for the majority of articles on wikipedia, GA is a realistic alternative that covers all articles"). If the GA process is viewed as a rebellion against the FA system, or an attempt to suborn the prestige currently associated with FA, many people—particularly people heavily involved in FA writing—who would otherwise be inclined to let it live will be spurred into opposing it at every step.

Hope that helps! Kirill Lokshin 17:50, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Very interesting. FYI, I had seen the attack on FAs yet and I agree with you on that. It seems a lengthy process and I also think that if GA becomes official wiki policy like FA is, 99% of the criticisms of the GA icon would go away. Rlevse 17:57, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Ivory-billed Woodpecker GA status

Re: the internal links, can you fix the first one for me to show me how this is done, and I'll do the rest SP-KP 18:07, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

OK. If they are all web links, the format is the same. If they are book or whatever, the format is slightly different. Let me know if you have questions. Rlevse 18:09, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, Randy!

Glad you know where my heart is, which makes it easy for support when either of us hits impasses on something with the Scout WP. We're reading from the same page, we want each article to be the very best as a reflection of the youth we're about. I appreciate you having my six, I know I get too worked up at times, it's important stuff. :) Chris 23:34, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Brownsea Island Scout Camp

Hi, I'd be grateful if you could cast a quick eye over User:Zaian/Brownsea Island Scout Camp before I launch it at the proper location. I suspect it would then make a nice candidate as a Did You Know article. Comments and improvements very welcome! Zaian 11:21, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the instant response! Thanks for picking up the incorrect date. Regarding linking, I agree. There are also a lot of Scout articles that link to Brownsea Island that should probably rather link to the new page once it's there. Zaian 11:48, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
I visited the island earlier this year, and picked up a few things including the booklet "Why Brownsea" which has a lot of detail about the camp (a full page for each day of the camp, plus copies of B-P's correspondence etc.) The Scouting Milestones page also has a lot of info. I'll see where I can add footnotes. Can't say footnotes are a forte of mine ;-) Zaian 12:04, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for calling the three articles to my attention. I've added the {{WPMILHIST}} project tags to the articles, and put an attention tag on Matabele War. — ERcheck (talk) 13:27, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

FYI, the references were in the external links, and I'm pretty sure what's in the article is about all that can gleaned from internet sources. --Fang Aili talk 19:56, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

That's too bad. It's just a stub as it is. Rlevse 20:09, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
It's definitly not a stub. I'd appreciate it if in the future you could be more constructive and take time to really look at an article before commenting. You said there were "no references" when there was one linked right in the article, and multiple links in the External links section. --Fang Aili talk 02:29, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
References go in a reference or footnotes section, not external links. The link in the article is an external jump, which is not desired, and the article is very short, a stub. It has nothing about his youth or family life. The quote is unfootnoted. Rlevse 09:55, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

See my comments at its talk page - you read my mind! SP-KP 23:45, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

Eagle Scout

I saw you added yourself to the list of Eagle Scouts, which I don't mind since you are a poet of some note, but a bio I read on you said you grew up in Canada, so how then did you earn Eagle Scout? A google search did not turn up any verification you're an Eagle either. Please advise. Thanks. Rlevse 23:01, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

I grew up on an American Airforce Base Ernest Harmon Air Force Base and was in Troop 6 there. After moving to Woodstock, Ontario in 1965 I became a US Lone Scout (along with my brother Cris) and in 1968 I received both my Eagle Scout and Queen's Scout while attending Troop 11 in Woodstock Ontario. I have some old records somewhere or they might be in my archives collection at York University. Google wouldn't have a search on it as I never encorporated scouting into my web pages for searches. Scouting user templates category

Rlevse...believe it or not, I didn't do it for the Scouting project. I am sorting the User templates category and decided to sort out the Scouting ones into their own Category. Unfortunately, it didn't help much in cleaning out the parent as I had hoped.

Please stress to your Scouting contributors that all Scouting related user templates go into the more specific category from here on out. Put a link to it on the project page as well so that it gets more visablity.

I also don't want anyone saying "Why's he saying that if he's not a member?". Does this explain it better? The final decision is up to you. Rlevse 23:12, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
      • "Of course he's supporting it, as he's a member" Same thing, but the other way around. But I'll let my name stay in now. You won, this time, but I won't support A-Class for Scouting yet ;-). Priorities: B-P House to FA, then B-P to A-Class (easy?) then to FA, then Scouting to A-Class (lots of work), then to FA (achievable?). Wim van Dorst (Talk) 23:20, 13 July 2006 (UTC).
        • Your priorities and level of involvement are up to you, as for us all. Of course Scouting can be an FA, but it's some work. Some of us, mostly Gadget850 and I, are working on getting both BSA articles up to snuff. Rlevse 23:23, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Scouting in Connecticut

Hello Rlevse,

Thank you for the input. I've corrected them. I have a question for you on the format. Most Scouting in articles contain very little regarding past councils, camps and lodges. The suggested format that you list the council and include the camp and lodge makes sense until you hit Connecticut where I think I found every council, every camp and every lodge. Does it make sense to list the three as I did or combine the three together. If combined, Camp Sequassen could be listed under 4 councils and where would the history go? To the last council? I've asked other folks, on an informal basis for their suggestions but received nothing back. I have more info to add, hopefully over the next several weeks. Any suggestion would be helpful.--dep369 23:30, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Dep369

Re: MilHist and Scouting

I suppose there is a certain amount of common material between the two topics. (Whether this is because Scouting has been influenced by Baden-Powell's military background, or because Scouts are more likely to distinguish themselves in the military, or perhaps for some completely different reason would make a fine dissertation topic for some sociology student.) In any case, it's a pleasure working with you; I hope that the cooperation between the two projects will continue, to the benefit of both. Kirill Lokshin 04:16, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Medal of Honor - FA

I appreciate your comment about the Medal of Honor article. It was added to the Military history WikiProject announcements, but it hasn't had a lot of edits to it. I agree that it would be a shame to see it lose the FA status. I am not an expert on the history of the award, so, I have more questions than answers; able to help more with form than with content. I appreciate your help on the article and hope that others will add their expertise as well. — ERcheck (talk) 02:07, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Medal of Honor

Very nice; thanks for the help! (Unfortunately, US military history is pretty much completely out of any area of expertise I might claim, so there's little I can do for the article content-wise.) Kirill Lokshin 02:16, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Both of you, no problem. I used to run a MOH site and hunt imposters. I'll see what I can do on content.Rlevse 02:20, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Great to know this is an area of expertise for you. I will look to you as a resource on MOH information — which is very pertinent at the moment. Do you know how the medals were attributed during the Civil War? In particular, were members of the militia considered part of the Army when they were awarded the MOH. The example is Joseph H. De Castro. He was part of the 19th Massachusetts Infantry. (The question pertains to who was the U.S. Army's first Hispanic Medal of Honor recipient. David B. Barkley (WWI) received that recognition. So, is De Castro not considered to be U.S. Army?) (We've visited similar ground before with respect to USAAC, USAAR, and USAF.) — ERcheck (talk) 21:09, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
All the militia guys got Army MOHs. They certainly didn't get Navy or Air Force MOHs. Now why Barkley was declared the first Hispanic Army MOH, I don't know. Who decided that anyway? My guess no one has put 2 and 2 together much before this that he was or wasn't Hispanic. I just did a quick check and some site list De Castro as Hispanic and some don't, some list him as Army, and some don't, my guess is it's up to the web site maker who is and isn't army, but he for sure got the Army version of the MOH. As for saying a militia guy isn't Army, ridiculous. He is sure not Navy. This page calls him Hispanic and this page says his wife's father was from Spain. My guess he was Hispanic and no one has figured out he was the first yet. Contact the CMOHS about this and you may get a feather in your cap. Rlevse 21:36, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
You can see my confusion. I checked a lot of refererences. I did try to call CMOHS, but reached the after hours answering machine. If RL doesn't intervene, I want to give them a call. — ERcheck (talk) 00:33, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

My dear Rlevse

My dear Rlevse, as usual, it is a great pleasure to hear from you - and in fact, I ws planning to visit you pretty soon as I would like your input on a different matter. But first things first, so let's start by saying that your advice on the Comanche article is much appreciated, and I will follow it in detail - thank you so much! As I didn't write it myself, but rather I simply reviewed its historical and factual accuracy, it'll be kinda hard for me to add the needed footnotes. However, I have interacted with its main authors, and I can ask for their help in the task. There is no hurry - I'd rather have this article checked, doublechecked and improved as much as possible before even thinking about moving on to FAC stage.

At the moment, tho, I'm much more interested in hearing your thoughts regarding the Portal that I've built and currently maintain, Portal:Indigenous peoples of North America. I'm investing much of my time perfecting it, and I know it still has weak areas; the To Do and the Categories sections are not finished yet, tho I feel like the other sections look rather complete already. I've been updating it regularly for about the last month, and so far I've received good feedback from users who have become interested and learned about the subject through it. My main concerns are, do you feel it's ergonomic enough, decently designed, and so on? I've noticed that, for some reason, sometimes a section's frame doesn't display properly; as we speak, the Biographies one is out of shape. What do you think should be improved before moving on to Featured Portal candidates? Please, allow me to thank you in advance for your valuable time, your advices and your help.

As I said above, it is always a pleasure to see you, my dear Rl; please, drop by and visit me anytime you wish, even if there's no business involved and you just feel like saying hi ;) Big hugs, Phaedriel The Wiki Soundtrack! - 13:42, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

I saw it, hun, I was monitoring your progress - thank you so much for the help! That had already happened to me at the Selected Quotes section before, so I'll keep that in mind whenever I update any section. Thanks so much! Please let me hear your thoughts regarding the Portal itself when you have the time to review it- no worries, there's no hurry. Again, thx, hun, I really appreciate your help :) Hugs, Phaedriel The Wiki Soundtrack! - 14:26, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

For the PS, see the talk page of the project assessment page. For Thailand, they probably didn't know about Chile. So, most of the ones listed in the Growth of Scouting section must have come in late 1910, likely we'll probably never know the real order of all of them. Rlevse 00:32, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Can you link me to the project assessment page? It seems now the "High" category is bio and BSA-centric, where the national organizations have been downgraded. That will further convince non-US project members of perceived overfocus on BSA. Camps and such should be "mid", and nationals "High", not vice-versa. Anyway, please link me. :) --Chris 00:44, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
You're jumping the gun. I haven't gotten to camps yet, I'm still on countries, read the assessment talk first, this just started yesterday and the idea came from WIM, a Dutchman-;)AND we have Jergen's support. The V1.0 links are at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting#Subpages_and_V1.0_pages. You can go directly to the assessment talk here. Wim knows more about assessments that I do too. Re: Calvin Graham article & more

Thanks so much... I do appreciate that you are keeping an eye on articles and letting me know. Looper5920 tagged the articles before I saw your note. I did find another reference for the Calvin Graham article (the House Bill restoring his veteran's statues and backpay. The article on Carl Brashear deserves a bit more attention. I'm going to tag it for attention by the Project and see if there are editors who will work on it. — ERcheck (talk) 22:55, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Re:Arthur Rose Eldred

Hello. The reason I chose not to place the article on hold is because some of the concerns I had went beyond minor edits/clarifications. If you look at the On Hold section of WP:GA/N, you'll see that the Good Article process is not a substitute for Peer Review. That's why I failed the article instead of placing it on hold.

That being said, you are of course free to re-nominate the article once you feel that the concerns I listed have been sufficiently addressed. Best of luck! --cholmes75 (chit chat) 17:41, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

dyk about boy scouts

Hiyas. I wanted to let you know that I pointed out a timing question regarding your DYK submission (because I don't want it to accidentally be disqualified because someone thought we had more time before it disappeared off the 5 day timer), and another editor made a comment. If you can address those, I'd think it would help getting it into the dyk queue. :) Cheers. Syrthiss 18:30, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

todolist template

Not sure what the ethics/etiquette is, but I was impressed with your to do list template. So, um, I guess I borrowed it. I would be happy to credit you with it, but have no idea where or how. I'm just learning about templates so it came in handy.

How about nominating Boy Scout for GA?

Medal of Honor copyedit

Hi. I've been re-reading the Medal of Honor article. I have a number of questions/comments. Would you like them here on your talk page or on its FA review page? — ERcheck (talk) 20:25, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Put them here. Anything I don't know I'll move. Rlevse 21:32, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

This is only from the intro and the first section. All picky comments (though I can't imagine being more picky than the FAR). (Feel free to tell me if this is too detailed, too critical, or just more than you care to hear ;-)

Introductory paragraphs

  • P1. What it is: It all works.
  • P2. Uniqueness: The number of times it has been awarded doesn't fit in this paragraph. Perhaps the numbers should be put in another paragraph — not a long discourse. (Brainstorm — perhaps total numbers, number per conflict, numbers per service branch? )
  • P3. Distinguishing it from other awards: There are two types of awards being mentioned here: (1) the other military neck award and (2) civilian awards. The paragraph needs a lead-in sentence to set the stage, rather than just jumping in:
  • The Legion of Merit statement seems like it is missing context. First sentence says that MOH is a neck award, as is the LOM (the commander's degree distinction is not at all apparent in context; the reader could go to the LOM article, but they shouldn't have to.) Only neck award for "valor", then what is the LOM for? This needs to be clear. The general public will not immediately distinguish between valor and merit. Perhaps include in the sentence "... for valor — actions taken during combat operations at risk of one's own life that are above and beyond the call of duty — ...."
  • Civilian awards — a short lead in. Presidential Medal of Freedom (highest); others with "Medal of Honor" in their name.

Origin section:

  • P2, S2: "the idea of a decoration for individual gallantry remained through the early 1800s". What is meant by "remained"? Were there any awards made? Mentioned in the Congressional record or in miliary communiques? Reference. Could it be that: "Although the Badge of Military Merit fell into disuse after the American Revolutionary War, the concept of a military award for individual gallantry by members of the U.S. armed forces had been established. (Took out decoration as the next sentence talks about the Certificate of Merit and then the Certificate of Merit Medal.
  • P3, S2: "such a medal did enter service in the Navy". Is "enter service" the correct terminology? Would it be correct to say that:
"Scott did not approve the proposal for a U.S. Army award. However, such an award was established for the Navy when Public Resolution 82 that provided for a Navy Medal of Valor, which came to be called the Medal of Honor, was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on 21 December 1861." ... put the name at the end of the paragraph, as both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army awards took the name Medal of Honor.
From some of the citations, it seems that the legislation for both had the terminology "medals of honor" in them, not as a title, but as a descriptor. When was the official name of "Medal of Honor" given? This reference indicates that the name was established within a year of the USN and USA medals being authorized. [1] Consider the inclusion of the "medals of honor" phrase of the legislation in the quotes about who is eligible.

Sure, feel free to edit it yourself, it's okay with me. I did the above edits. I think the stalling of removing the FAR has gotten ridiculous. It's clearly FA again and all this is tweaking that is outside the scope of the FAR, IMHO. But until whomever blesses it off, I guess we're stuck.Rlevse
Who does the "blessing"? I agree that the article is in great shape. I can't thank you enough for all of your diligent efforts in improving it and addressing all of the major and minor items. — ERcheck (talk) 01:13, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Medal of Honor

As a rule of thumb it is advisable not to close reviews in which you have participated. The Medal of Honor review was obviously successful and closing it was the right choice but it is better to let a neutral person close it. Take care. Joelito (talk) 15:55, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

OK, but no one would answer me about who does that. Rlevse 15:56, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Either I or User:Marskell usually do the closings but anyone is welcome to do it. I must have missed your question or I would have answered. Joelito (talk) 16:14, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
No problem. I was just trying to help out. Glad we all agree the FAR was successful, a lot of work went into it! Rlevse 16:15, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

BSAseries

I had been checking them but hadn't seen any white space. Which one are your referring to? Is it, perhaps, browser dependent? --NThurston 16:08, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

It could be browser dependent. Here at work I only have IE, at home I have IE and FF. I fixed the merit badge one (for IE at least). It made my FA History of merit badges (Boy Scouts of America) article all whacky. I'll play with it for that article, OK? Do you use FF? Rlevse 16:12, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I use FF, but I do have IE installed. I'll check it out there, too. --NThurston 16:27, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I compared the first versions with the template in IE and FF, and only IE had a problem with white space. Good to know that this could be a problem. I LIKE the shorter template (makes better use of space), but in the case of MB History, it doesn't make much difference because it is the long TOC that is causing the Right Hand side white space now. A longer template would just flow down alongside the TOC. I'll check the other pages to see what effect the template is having in IE. --NThurston 16:46, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

I see that you're making some progress with experimentation. You can use the samples as the logo image for the series template, but I haven't figured out how to include the caption and still have it look decent. I'll check back in a while to see what you have come up with. --NThurston 16:56, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

For now, there's a template just for History of merit badges (Boy Scouts of America) that is called "BSAseriesMBHistory". It looks just like this one, only it as another image below the box and above the portal tag. This is due to the unique layout of that article and all the white space.Rlevse 17:10, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
It's possible to make the inclusion of another image an optional tag, but we'll worry about that later.Rlevse 17:14, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
I've noticed that the articles with long TOCs have white space underneath the portal tag, something to consider.Rlevse 17:17, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
I think I have a better solution - I modified the BSAseries template to allow for a "lowbox". It is intended that the lowbox variable would be another template. So I created a new template - Template:MBHistory that I believe better displays what you had in mind. This approach keeps a single "series" template (only one thing to edit), plus it allows more flexibility in how the lowbox info would be presented - images, text, etc. I believe you will like this better. --NThurston 17:40, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
As for white space underneath the portal tag, I have looked at that, and it's not caused by the series template, but by the TOC. Articles that have short lead-ins and short TOCs do not have that problem. I don't think there are any that are really bad now, but if there's a specific one that is unappealing, let me know and I will look into a solution. --NThurston 17:40, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Outstanding! Nice job. I'll have the mbhist template I created deleted. Rlevse 17:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Seems logical to me to add the Eagle FA to the series under Advancement and Recognition. However, I have a concern about how it would affect the article. I have created a sandbox version. Please take a look, see what you think, let me know. --NThurston 19:59, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

This is about the best I could do, with the BSAEagleBadges on top. Why won't it stay under the BSASeries using the lowbox?--it goes to the side.Rlevse 20:51, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
It goes to the side because of the way the original table is formatted. I was able to get it to go under, but it's pretty big and flows down into the next section. --NThurston 21:53, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
OK - Your honest opinion - Are any of the versions you have seen clean enough to warrant making the change on the real page? Options - Badges & series boxes side-by-side, Badges over series, or Badges under series. Or should we just leave it out of the series box for now?--NThurston

None of them junmp out at me. I vote for leaving the article alone right now. Rlevse 22:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Same here, but I'll keep tinkering with it. Any other candidates for inclusion on the Series template? --NThurston 13:00, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Closing FARs

Hi Rlevse. Like all Wiki processes, you shouldn't close reviews you are directly involved in, as you did for Medal of Honour. I know it was meant well, as the consensus had moved to keep. Cheers, Marskell 19:18, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

'nother bout of merging, got your note, and condolences

Hi Randy,

  • I am sorry about the death in your family (just now read it), and hope you and your loved ones are well.
  • got your note on marking merges NA, which is what I am doing now.
  • please weigh in on Talk:Scouting in Ohio, we're going to have to fight this battle several times for a long while. I wish there was some boilerplate "no, your stub goes here" rule we could enforce somehow. Everyone thinks their stub is noteworthy by itself, when in most cases it's just a sub-par paragraph (many of my own smaller world articles included) which we need to give a home. Scouting cats

If you want to add the Scouting categories to something, go ahead, but please don't remove them from any categories, we have them set that way for a reason.Rlevse 19:50, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Ah, my buddy who thinks a training award to adults in an organisation aimed at children is a Top importance article! ;) What changes to categorisation do you have a problem with? I'm very familiar with WikiProject categorisation - I actually wrote the guidelines - and nobody has ever complained about my work before. I've reorganised dozens of WikiProject cats in the past. Pray tell whats up! --kingboyk 19:57, 4 August 2006 (UTC) PS Ah I see, the inclusion of WP1.0 assessments in Category:Scouting. You've been reverted on this twice, don't you think you might be wrong? Almost no other WikiProject does it your way, and those I find I'm changing. We keep infrastructure and mainspace categories seperate; mixing them is called a "self reference" and we generally don't do that. In the offchance I'm wrong (may well be of course) please take it to the WP1.0 talk pages for verification.

Larch Hill

Hi Rlevse, I think that I have done what you suggested to the article. I'll continue to work on it. As a relatively new user who is just learning the ropes, as it were, I also just want to say thanks lots for your help! Stevecull 14:07, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, could you please rerate the South African Scout Association article, I've lengthed the lead, added some more content and fixed a couple of minor formatting things. I didn't add any more refrences, cause to my knowledge there aren't any more (All information is available from the SASA official website - albeit with alot of effort)

  • I've reformated and retyped large portions of the article, mind taking another peak and letting me know what you think of it now, thanks Jediwannabe 07:35, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I think it's a very nice article. I have at least two suggestions-see if you can expand the lead to two paras summarizing the article and find more than one footnote. The rest of my suggestions will depend on how far you want to go with this: GA, A-class, or FA. Let me know. Rlevse 09:57, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll get working on those two suggestions. I'd like to have this article a FA article (But A-Class is a good start for now) Jediwannabe 11:33, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

as for the merge stmt, I have to say is something to the idea that reservations that are or were national should not go into a state article...?Rlevse 21:49, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair enough, but John Schiff Res was local, which is why I merged the one and not the other. Chris 23:54, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

USS Simpson

Actually there is a reason I reverted the Simpson article. If you check the edit history, the article has been mercilessly edited by someone adding tons of vanity entries and essentially unimportant information based on his stint on the ship. Because of this, I reverted to a version prior to his edits, so that I can go back later and re-add info that is actually relevant. Because of his editing style, it is simpler just to get rid of his edits and start again. For instance, you have reverted to a version where the editor has inserted his own name into the article and the format is completely wrong.--Nobunaga24 01:45, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I merged these into Scouting in Rathfarnham as the article on 14th Dublin is copyed and pasted from the article 13th Dublin. This seems to have touched a nerve and I have now been accused of vandalism (?!) by User:Jorgenpfhartogs when I am merely trying to ensure that there are no Scouting articles with identical content! Can you offer advice on the subject? Thanks Stevecull 23:58, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, it's obvious people are watching those two articles. Rebelguys2, a project member, offered good advise on Scouting in Rathfarnham talk page. You should mention it is Scouting project policy not to have articles on local units, but to group them as you're trying. Local unit articles usually don't have enough info to stand on their own and not get deleted or merged. If they do exist, they need enough of their own material and to be notable in some way. I'm not an expert on Irish Scouting, so I can't tell you if both should be fully merged into Scouting in Rathfarnham, but I can tell 14th and 15th should be merged into one article at a minimum. Contact User:ERCheck about a move (he's in MILHIST, but a friend of mine and an admin). Also, I did not see a merge tag on 13th or 14th, which meant no one got notice as far as I can tell. You could put a merge tag on 14th, list your reasons, and then ask for votes on our project page. Chris (Kintetsubuffalo) has lots of experience with Scouting mergers, You can ask him too. Let us know if you have more questions.Rlevse 00:59, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

The 14th and 13th units are two complete separate units. They are both based in Rathfarnham and the 14th was established by leaders of the 13th but since then they have very different histories. There are 4 more units in Rathfarnham so an article about Scouting in Rathfarnham should not include the history of the 13th and the 14th but should be a more general artical. Merging 14th Dublin and 13th Dublin would insinuate they are thesame unit, which they clearly are not. I'm an active leader in the 13th Dublin unit and therefore do not know anything of the history of the 14th Dublin since it was established. I also can't tell you more about the other 3 units, but I've requested info from them as to write an article about Scouting in Rathfarnham.

I've rewritten the page about Scouting in Rathfarnham a bit since the history of the 13th Dublin is not the sole history of Scouting in that area. I'm looking for more info on the other troops. By my knowledge there were/are 6 troops: 13th Dublin, 14th Dublin, 31st Dublin, 68th Dublin, Rathfarnham Girl Guides and a troop in Ballyboden that no longer exists. I've contacted the leaders I know of all troops in the area (Mountpellier Scout County and Three Rock Scout County) to enlighten me with any info they might posses. I beg all of you to leave the 13th Dublin and 14th Dublin articles intact.I will receive more info about the 14th soon so I'll be able to continuee their history from the moment they became a separate unit.I also started articles on the Scout Provinces in Ireland. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Jorgenpfhartogs

Jorgenpfhartogs's plan sounds very amibitious but I am very interested to see how it will turn out. Thanks for your input as always Stevecull 20:33, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

The 13th has a very long and interesting history and we have enough material two fill 2 books In fact, there are already 2 books written about the history of the unit and the unit is mentioned in a lot of local history studies. I could write at least 200 pages about the history but I do agree that is not the case for each unit. In some cases an article for each unit would not be appropiate but in this case is fully believe that the history of the 13th does not belong in the article Scouting in Rathfarnham. I believe a separate article IS useful in this case. I will rewrite the articles. Jorgenpfhartogs 02:44, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

When I looked, the writing of both 14th and 13th were very similar, that's why I said that. And as I said, unit level articles need to be complete and able to stand alone; if you can make that happen, great. We have the (general) policy about local unit articles because they tend to be left as stubs and get deleted. Usually, merging them into a regional article saves their info. If you do write full articles on them, please put summaries in the Rathfarnham article with a "main" link to the full articles. Rlevse 03:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I've rewritten the articles 13th Dublin, 14th Dublin and Scouting in Rathfarnham in a way that (I hope) all of us can live with.Jorgenpfhartogs 06:22, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

13th looks nice. To be B-class I suggest a lead that summarizes the article and refernces--I'd also suggest if you could emphasize somewhere why it's unique. 14th is certainly different now, but is a borderline stub.Rlevse 10:04, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

BPSA

I just talked to some people in Baden Powell Scouts Association and they asked me to edit the articles in accordance to their wishes. The IT-officer of Baden Powell scouts Ireland and UK lives close to me so I regulary meet up with him to see how I can edit it to a good article that is approved by Baden Powell Scouts. They wish it to be more like an advertisement while Wiki's policy is NPOV. I just edited the articles and I'm waiting for approval from them and wikipedians. Jorgenpfhartogs 05:31, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

yep, I agree. It's hard to find a raod between advertisement and neutral point of view. as you can from the information BPSA gave me they would like a very cheap form of advertisement. I've explained that things like changing The organisation shares the heritage of the youth Scouting Movement, but was formed in the United Kingdom in 1970 when it was felt that the "modernisation" of the Scout Movement was abandoning the traditions and intentions established by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. The Baden-Powell Scouts retain the belief that essence of the movement should be based on outdoor activities related to the skills of explorers, backwoodsmen and frontiersmen into just The organisation shares the heritage of the youth Scouting Movement, in the UK and next year will cellebrate 100 years of Scouting would be incorrect and not a neutral point of view. Their point of view makes sense too when they say the article is too much WOSM now and too negative towards BPSA.

I'm in contact now with all 5 organisations (UK & Ireland, US, Canada and Australia) and they all seem to have their own ideas and except for Ireland and UK have no contact with each other like WOSM organisations do. They feel as if the WOSM organistions see them as a competitor and most seem indeed to have negative tendencies towards BPSA. I'll try to make the article more wikipedia while maintaining respect for the wishes of BPSA. You can contact BPSA UK and Ireland via rachel@badenpowellscoutsireland.ie

Jorgenpfhartogs 11:54, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

They've also asked me to include the full letter by the president but I refused to do that. I'll have a meeting with them tonight so might be able to clean up to an article we can all agree on soon.

Jorgenpfhartogs 11:56, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

OK, talk to them first. The most dangerous part here, and it seems you're aware of it, is control by an outside organization. Once they get a taste of it, it's hard to stop them. I'd suggest not putting in any more comments, emails, etc from them. Thanks for keeping me informed.Rlevse 11:59, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Ok, will do. Indeed I'm very aware that their wishes stroke with our NPOV. They see me as a CSI man of course and therefore one of the people working against them. I'm tryon to win their trust and suggested several forums to them where they can post messages that are more like advertisement. I've told them Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia, no more and no less. This means it has to give informative, correct information from a neutral point of view. BPSA Australa is a lot more positive but seems to be on the brink of extinction. Final edit should be ready tomorrow at last.

Jorgenpfhartogs 12:08, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Long talk, yesterday. I'll rewrite BPSA today. BPSA Ireland, Canada, US, Australia and UK will be subsections under the main article. I'll notify you after the rewrite. They've asked me to mention the letter by the president, but I agreed on a subsection on the president with the highlights in it.

Jorgenpfhartogs 10:21, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Good luck walking the tight rope-;). Rlevse 12:11, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
almost finished now.

Just adding Canada, Australia and US later and President's view will be in separate article as founder of BPSA and WFIS. Jorgenpfhartogs 17:25, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

The BPSA is happy with the article and I'll just tidy it up a bit and add the other nations. The article on WFIS however seems to be laregly incorrect and I'm in contact now with the 4 instigators and the Pfadfinder Deutschland to correct it. A nice chance to brush up on my German and French ;). Jorgenpfhartogs 11:28, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

We don't need their approval--I see outside organization's only legit role as verifying hard facts. I will agree that it is better than it was, but it still sounds self-laudatroy to me, especially the lead, which also still sounds like an advertisement about how great they are and does not summarize the article. I haven't looked at WFIS's article yet.Rlevse 11:41, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Rlevse, I've added a useful book reference to the Sparty article and fixed the existing web citation. Let me know if it needs anything else to get up to GA status. Thanks for all your help! Lovelac7 02:35, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

  • I couldn't find a reference for that Tommy Trojan line, so I just went ahead and deleted it. I also added another reference from another good MSU book. Take a look. Lovelac7 03:21, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
    • P.S. I added a few more links and gave it another copyedit. Lovelac7 06:02, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

An idea

I was wondering if you'd be able to comment on a proposal I've just started on. It's obviously quite inchoate at this point, but I'd at least like for someone to tell me whether I'm totally insane for even suggesting it ;-) Kirill Lokshin 18:08, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I think this is an excellent idea. The PR process is dying IMHO from lack of input as a lot of people seem to use FAC for a PR now. I also see the need for V1.0 interproject issues being handled in a more orderly fashion. Rlevse 18:23, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Could you stop back by the FAC and let us know your reasoning for the continued objection? Since it's not based on the FAC criteria in any obvious fashion, the objection will be dismissed if it remains unexplained. Ryu Kaze 04:22, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

That's ok. So be it. And tell Deckiller he's being counterproductive. Rlevse 09:55, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

FAC - Banksia brownii

You recently reviewed this article doing some small edits and leaving a mild objection as the lead was too short. We have rewritten the lead and would appreciate if you have the time to pass by again. Thank you for your help and suggestions. Gnangarra 07:48, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for helping with this article (semi-protection). See edits by user Khompat, IP 129.125.7.116, user Tuleeprabaht. I think they may be the same. Khompat keeps putting his fac comments at the top and slandering legit editors. Please investigate and advise/take action on this. Thanks for helping.Rlevse 16:09, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, I've marked them as sock puppets; I don't think there's much else to do. They've been blocked for different things now. If more happens, let me know. —Mets501 (talk) 19:43, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

I just noticed you approved GA status for this article. I think that might be a little premature. It has some rather serious NPoV issues, which I thought were not in accord with "good articles." Would be better to put it on hold hoping it gets fixed in a week. (It might, there are quite a few people working on it.) Putting your talk page on watchlist; you can respond here. Gimmetrow 00:31, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Do what you want with it. Rlevse 00:37, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
You've already added it to the GA page. I'll see how the article progresses. Gimmetrow 01:04, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
In that case, may I suggest you edit it yourself in the areas that concern you. If you want to put it on hold or review, it won't bother me.Rlevse 01:09, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
I am working on it. This is not a simple fix. Gimmetrow 03:48, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
I liked the artilce, but you obviously felt there was some POV; which obviously means we disagree. But I respect your rights to edit and act on the GA part, that's why I said I don't object to what actions (that I mentioned) you may take.Rlevse 10:30, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

I liked the article too, but some editors find it a bit hagiographic. Gimmetrow 08:36, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Would you be so kind as to go to the discussion about the Islamic Wikiproject Award? This has been a proposal that has lingered for donkey's yonks. I think the image is acceptable as a WP:PUA, but don't think the image is in line with most of the images at Wikipedia:Wikiproject awards. The design is not well supported, and right before I was going to archive the debate for lack of support, someone else moved it to the Wikiproject awards page.

The current discussion is going on here: Wikipedia:Barnstar_and_award_proposals/New_Proposals#Another_image. Your input is appreciated. --evrik 03:17, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Please change the name of this article to The Guides and Scouts Movement of Belgium instead of giving it the French name. Do you have any sense of civility? Not only do you refuse to be civil in your comments, you remove my comments as "VANDALISM." It is indeed SAD that an author of FAs and a featured portal finds it so easy to be rude, malicious and lame. Rama's arrow 23:51, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the helpful critique on the Larrys Creek FAC page. Per your comments, I have expanded the name section, removed all footnotes from the lead section (and I believe corrected all errors resulting from cutting and pasting the references), and made a new subsection on "Water quality and pollution" incorporating some material already in the article and adding one reference. I also added the list of tributaries recommended by the Rivers WikiProject. I have not been through the FAC process before, so I hope it is OK that I put this reply here as well as at the Larrys Creek FAC page. Thanks again, Ruhrfisch 02:55, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Merge

Why are you proposing to merge Wordl Cons. Award with Green Scouting? The WCA is a BSA award. I don't get the connection.Rlevse 15:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually, the WCA is issued by many world Scout associations, and was created partially in response to the rise of Green Scouting. Mainly I put the merge tags there as 1) they are related topics, and 2) WCA is a stub in need of a home. Always love to find orphans homes. However, if you see it needing to go somewhere else, please suggest it. Like Horus Kol, I am of the opinion that if it is not like an Eagle Scout or Queen Scout or Bronze Wolf, that high up or that amount of work, it needs to be under some other article. But I do welcome healthy debate, and as always your sage counsel. :) Chris 23:33, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Admin advice

The 3RR should limit the chaos he can cause, if he's not willing to negotiate. Otherwise, I would suggest opening an RFC on the article; his motivations are seriously misguided, but not obviously bad-faith, so going down the disciplinary route is a little premature at this point.

On a rather unrelated point that ocurred to me as I was looking through these article: I'm a bit surprised that Scouting doesn't have a disambiguation link to Reconnaissance. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 02:50, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I've given him a 24-hour block. If you'd like to file an RFC, just follow the instructions here; unlike user conduct RFCs, article RFCs are pretty easy (you basically give a description & link in one or more of the lists). You should be the one to do it, since you're a party to the dispute; I really don't know enough about Scouts to touch the article itself. Kirill Lokshin 03:02, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, but I rarely vote if I don't have much knowledge about the subject. Anyway, WP:FAC is not a voting process, it's a discussion ground, as FA status does not rely on the number of support votes. CG 20:01, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

User:Taykid41 asked me to check his work in Scouts Canada Scout Badges. Could you please do this instead of me? I'm not experienced in badge programs - my association doesn't issue this kind of badges (like most German associations). Thanks. --jergen 21:09, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Scouting awards

Hi, I noticed that you're quite the keen scout with your Wood Badger and Eagle. I'm a scouter myself, and have been for 6 years. I'm now doing leadership, and as of next March I'll be bumped up our hierarchy to an assistant leader officially. I'm with the 27th East Belfast scouts, UK. How did you receive both your awards? They're both very prestigious and a goal for myself. I'd also love someday to receive my Queen's Scout, but that takes a lot as I'm sure you know. --Dom0803 14:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

First, thanks for your Scouting interest and you're welcome to join the project. I received my Eagle award right after I turned 16, many years ago. I got my Wood Badge beads a few years ago after taking the course and completing my ticket. Is this what you wanted to know? Rlevse 14:42, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
That'll do, yep. Though how did you apply for them? I'm used to badgework being set on dates for me, but these aren't the types of badgework we would do. --Dom0803 18:38, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
I guess you're in Ireland? I don't know about Ireland, but in the USA, you can only earn Eagle Scout up to age 18. Wood Badge is for adults. Another project member, Stevecull is from Ireland and I'm sure he could tell you more. Or perhaps Horus Kol. Rlevse 20:00, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm actually from Northern Ireland, which is the United Kingdom, so I'm not sure if it's done differently in Ireland. Two different countries ;) --Dom0803 21:27, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Horus Kol is from the UK. Rlevse 21:30, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Dom, I think NI is the same as the rest of the UK - for the Queen's Scout Award, you need to just work on it, it is designed to be a self-motivated award. Still, I'd try and track down a Scout Network to work with. As for the Wood Badge - you are registered for that as part of your Adult Leadership Training in the UK. Hope this helps - another place to go and ask about this is Scout Forum. Cheers, Horus Kol 08:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

this guy really wants to delete my recent additions for illustration-Image:LaszlonagyU.jpg‎, Image:Laszlonagycarlgusta.jpg‎; and Image:BoyScoutsofNippon.jpg, please help me save them from him. I hate having to do this all the time. Chris 22:06, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I've had that same problem. The image nazis are real pains and they have lots of backing because it helps keep wiki from getting sued. The two easiest ways I've found to avoid them is find a tag they won't complain about and use image searches on google and find (perhaps by asking) someone to use their photos. I'm also not an image expert--try User:Rebelguys2. If I think of something, I will help of course.Rlevse 22:24, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

DESA

I converted your DESA list to wikimarkup User:Gadget850/Sandbox5. We might get a few more names from this. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 13:13, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

About ten minutes of semi-interrupted time. Cleaned the source HTML using Ultraedit and added the link brackets, then ran it through html2wiki, then cleaned up that output with Ultraedit. Try doing that with 30 years of missile launch history that is in different formats and you have a real job. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 14:07, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Gilwell Park Infobox

Gilwell Park is in Chingford, Essex, but right on the border of Greater London... Gilwell Park Site Horus Kol 15:05, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

ugh - turns out things are not that simple - Gilwell Park gives their address as Chingford (town) in the county of Essex... and the campsite is in Essex, but Chingford is now in a London Borough... I'll figure out the best information and change the infobox sometime this morning. Horus Kol 07:34, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
after a bit of thought - and seeing as how the place is slap bang on the border, I guess its easier to keep it as is... Horus Kol 08:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
That's okay, Wim modified a different box that is probably better to use (the one without a map). The one I asked you about had the map in it. Rlevse 09:51, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

I noticed the article nomination was going all over the place and I was going to put some unsigned tags for some comments when i ran into some confusion with your edits.

Here is how i see the history:

Now those last two... what was that about? Was that a mistake or what? sorry just curious. - Tutmosis 16:06, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

No, Whomever nominated it didn't set it up right, It was originally made a part of the Gilwell Park FAC(see its history). All I did was fix it so it showed up correctly with its own FAC subpage and then object to it. There were two separate pages, with Dowd not showing up in the FAC listing before I fixed and merged them. Rlevse 16:07, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

It is 4, not 3

That is the number of articles you have now helped bring to FA status. Congratulations. Anagnorisis 18:48, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

I already changed it, it's 3 (History of MBs, Eagle Scout, and Bhumipol), or did I miss one in my old age? Thanks for thinking of me. Rlevse 19:07, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm putting in my two cents here. It may not be what Anagnorisis is referring to, but you were key in improving the Medal of Honor article for it to maintain its FA status. — ERcheck (talk) 03:57, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm. I didn't think of that, I'll mull it over. Rlevse 09:46, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

FU - Merit Badge History

Yeah. Durin already hit the Eagle box that we had been working on and I figure he'll get here eventually. He's actually right on this one. The image shouldn't be inside the template. I am working on a work around, but it's a little tricky. I thought I had it, but am still fiddling. If I can't make it work in the next little while, I'll rv it back to the image-included code and work on it later. --NThurston 19:41, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

So, what happens now? Horus Kol 09:33, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Once it's deleted, I suggest you put the info into an article the council/county level in that area. If you see an article that may be afd'd, it's prudent to copy it's text into a text file on your computer, that way the info isn't lost. You also could recreate the file, but it's got a good chance of getting afd'd again. Rlevse 09:51, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Okay - we'd already gotten the relevant information into other articles beforehand... I wasn't actually deleted this morning when I checked, which was why I had asked my question... Horus Kol 11:48, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Ladakh FAC

Hey Rlevse, could you look at Ladakh's FAC nomination, and see if you have any more issues. Anything else that should be fixed? Thanks, deeptrivia (talk) 17:30, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

On Greek letters in notes: I did that since numerals were already used for references. I took the cue from an article that recently got featured status, Pericles. deeptrivia (talk) 18:08, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

MILHIST needs to tag and rate Robert Lee Scott, Jr.

Thanks for pointing this out. I've added an infobox and tagged (w/assessment) the article for WPMILHIST.

Question: Is there a record of the project that he worked on to earn Eagle Scout?

ERcheck (talk) 03:55, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Probably not. BSA national hq does not keep records of Eagle projects, they'd never know what he did. He would have earned Eagle about 1923 or so, so that makes it harder still. Some councils/districts keep the projects, others return them to the Scout, so it's possible but being 80-odd years ago, finding out is not likely, I think. BSA national does track every single Eagle Scout, where and when they made it, there troop, etc.; but not what their project was. The only way to find out his project would be to contact his family or the council (or its current incarnation as may have split or merged over the years) and hope for the best. Rlevse 09:50, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
In 1923, the only requirement for Eagle was to earn 21 merit badges. The service project was added in 1927. See Eagle Scout (Boy Scouts of America). --Gadget850 ( Ed) 10:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Quite true, good catch gadget. Rlevse 10:14, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

For the WP:Scout announcement?

Randy, I just put up the article on The Scout Association of Hong Kong on WP:PR for a peer review. Would that warrant an announcement on WP:Scout? And the proposal of the new structure? That is at least important! Wim van Dorst (Talk) 20:45, 13 September 2006 (UTC).

Sure. I'll add them to announcements in a moment. FYI, anyone can add an announcement, not just I. Rlevse 21:57, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
  • I know: I have done so before. But this time I wondered whether it would be appropriate, calling such attention to Hong Kong, or calling attention away from the IMHO important discussion about the structure. Wim van Dorst (Talk) 22:05, 13 September 2006 (UTC).
    • I figure anyone who's going to read the announcements and participate will read all the new ones, so I listed both of them. Rlevse 22:06, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Infoboxes

I was just wondering how you made those infoboxes for articles like Gilwell Park - I want to knock up something similar for the World Jamboree articles. Horus Kol 13:21, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Infoboxes are templates. To get to a template, go to the template namespace, see Template:Infobox_WorldScouting for a template example. Rlevse 13:44, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
  • The generic WorldScouting infobox is now in 1st World Scout Jamboree. I was wondering whether we may have to add/change some fields to make it more flexible. Comments? Wim van Dorst (Talk) 08:35, 16 September 2006 (UTC).
    • Adding fields is fine as long as they're optional, it'll only make it more flexible. The problem with changing a field name is it'll affect all instances of all articles using it. In the case of 1st Jambo, it's an event, not an organization, so we may need to make another one here. Rlevse 12:05, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
      • Rather a blunt method: just a bold copy of the other template with very minor changes? Now we'll have to maintain/publicize two templates. Why not finetune the {{Infobox WorldScouting}} and do it properly? Wim van Dorst (Talk) 20:35, 18 September 2006 (UTC).
      • What do you think? Wim van Dorst (Talk) 21:48, 18 September 2006 (UTC).
        • Yea, I like what you did, but I don't have any experience with switches in templates. I'll have the one I made deleted. Rlevse 21:50, 18 September 2006 (UTC)
        • Thanks for the thumbs up. Just give me good ideas what should go where, and I'll try to tweak it for you, although it isn't difficult if you got a reasonable ref doc. Wim van Dorst (Talk) 21:53, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

DYK of 1st World Scout Jamboree

Hi Randy, you added it to the list on WP:Scout, but I can't find the line. What was it? Wim van Dorst (Talk) 08:37, 16 September 2006 (UTC).

See the top entry here: WP:Scout#Did_you_know.3F Rlevse 12:08, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
OH, I think you're talking about what it said on the main page. I think the person that does DYK is in India and so it changes before the FA of the day does. It can be hard to catch sometimes. Anyway, it said something like "not did the 1st Jambo have thousands of Scouts, but also, alligators, crocodiles, and..." some other big dangerous critters I can't recall. Rlevse 12:16, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
it was in the archive - "...that in addition to 8,000 Scouts, the 1st World Scout Jamboree of 1920 also hosted, amongst other animals, an alligator, a crocodile, an elephant, and a lioness cub?" Horus Kol 09:08, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
  • Hi Randy, the 3rd World Scout Jamboree article isn't too old. Would you care to make a DYK out of it, please? Feel free to step in, there: I don't have the time to find out the procedure and follow it up (busy at work). Wim van Dorst (Talk) 20:38, 18 September 2006 (UTC).
Done. Nice work with the infobox. Rlevse 21:48, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Happy International Talk Like a Pirate Day! ARRGG! Darthgriz98 15:21, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

This is for real. LOL. Wim van Dorst (Talk) 19:43, 19 September 2006 (UTC).

Tagged, etc.

Good morning. I've reviewed and tagged USS Firebolt (PC-10).

(Sorry to miss out on assisting on Bhumibol Adulyadej, but it seems that all worked out.)

Edits

We really have to stop editing at the same time ;-) It did make me take a look at the youth positions in the Boy Scout article , and I saw some stuff that crept in. I need to figure out where to put bugler since it is not considered a leadership positon. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 00:25, 25 September 2006 (UTC) Whoa! The toolbar got updated.

Review me

Hi - recalling that we had a brief tiff in August, I would like to apologize for any uncivil or rude conduct on my part, even though I stand by my rationale and core message. Please do me the kindness of visiting and sharing your views at Wikipedia:Editor review/Rama's Arrow 2. I need your advice and criticism, and I would be immensely grateful if you could spare a little time on this. Thank you, Rama's arrow 15:39, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you sir for your graciousness and for taking the time to review me. Believe it or not, I was angry with myself for falling into feud, however brief with a distinguished editor like you. In answering your question, I've tried to explain that my motivation at the time was never to insult you. Again, many thanks! Rama's arrow 12:36, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Your userpage answers your own question. That's at least what I think of you. Rama's arrow 13:03, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

I've made some edits to the article, including adding his Navy Cross citations. In addition, in the infobox we usually put the medals in order of precedence down to the Purple Heart. Since the Air Medal is after the Purple Heart, I removed that from the infobox.

Thank you for creating an article. A hero with two Navy Crosses certainly should have an article. I hope you can obtain permission to use a photo.

I've completed the infobox info for the ship. Good idea for the DYK. — ERcheck (talk) 02:26, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
I've corrected the info for the NC awards — both Pacific theater, though not both BCS, as you noted. — ERcheck (talk) 02:39, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Yep, better wording. Tks. see note on infobox.Rlevse 02:40, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
Purpose of the asterisk — to act as a sub-bullet for listing of specific notable battles of the given war. — ERcheck (talk) 02:43, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

DYK

Updated DYK query On 28 September, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Harry Brinkley Bass, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

DYK - Congrats!

Wow! That was quick — Harry Brinkley Bass making DYK. It's great that you were able to get permission for the photo in time for the DYK promotion. — ERcheck (talk) 01:11, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Let me add my congratulations for your DYK. I'm glad to see you haven't had to pay for this honour with lots of vandalism. Thank you for fixing some of this on Silver Fish. Kingbird 17:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
