Ukrainian topics

Hi Riurik. Thanks for your several contributions related to Ukraine. Please have a look at Ukraine portal at Wikipedia where you can find several links of interest if you want to contribute to the Ukraine-related topics. Similarly, there is a sister Russia portal since many editors contribute to the topics of both countries. Especially useful for the editors, are the notice boards at both portals, one for new article announcements and the other for announcements on anything else. I announced the Prytula article you created already so that the active Ukrainian editors check it out and expand. Ukrainian Village

You beat me to the punch! I was just about to create a disambig about that phrase. I hadn't realised there was a "Ukrainian Village" in Chicago until I read about in the Economist, when they did a special report on Chicago. I work at the "Ukrainian Village" museum in Alberta, Canada. Anyway, I went ahead and made a disambig for the phrase, and moved your page to ditto (Chicago). I hope you don't mind this. After all a real Ukrainian village is a village in Ukraine! Anyway it's nice to have someone else out there working on Ukrainian diaspora topics. License tagging for Image:BorysTarasyuk.jpg

Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Wikipedia image use

I slogged through some image use pages but I could not find anything that address the crediting of images as part of the caption. Can you direct me to the section you referred to when removing my name from the photo I took? If you would copy and paste the relevant section to my Talk page along with a link. Ukr-hist-stub

Congratulations with creating the new stub and a cat for it. Please be prepared to defend is as I failed a while ago. See here and the section below for more. Basically, we either have to gain more momentum of more users voicefully defending it or to quickly write 30 stubs, which is an easy but stupid IMO solution. The "more users voicefully defending it" isn't a great solution either, as regardless of same, it's still undersized, and far from needed (as the parent stub type is very modest in size too). See the stub creation guidelines. I'd go ahead and propose it, and not worry about blanking it or requesting deletion just yet, though don't be surprised if it is deleted, as it's been speedied twice as a recreation already. Personally I think that such small stub types are ultimately counterproductive: if there are so few articles, it's a strong indication that it's not a particularly active area of editing, and separating them off into their own category makes it less likely they'll be found by people editing related areas. (Like Ukraine in general, or Eastern European history in general.) Alai 19:23, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Yet, that is what portals, such as portal:ukraine, are for - to help people find areas requiring attention. By aggregating all Ukraine history stub article, we will allow editors to easily find and expand these stubs because they all will be in one place. I also do not agree with your claim that "separating them off into their own category makes it 'less' likely they'll be found by people editing related areas." Categorizing will not take the stubs off the wikipedia search; editors will still be able to locate them just as likely, if not more. Think of any grocery store: in order to maximize sales, the products are grouped in categories and this in turn helps customers (editors in our case) find what they may be looking for.--Riurik 04:54, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

This was indeed such a silly fight! Basically, I was told that there are rules while my argument was along the WP:IAR lines. It seemed to me sensible, I acted in good faith and hence insisted for a while, but as per firm opposition I met, the spark was lost and I just let it go.

If the stub sorters will persist with demanding the cat to have no less than 60 entries, we could write the additional 30 or so stubs in no time. Say, any Cossack battle would qualify, etc. I thought that no article is better than

"XZZ was an YYY that took place in ZZZ between AAA and BBB."

Since a reply in the second person is evidently out of the question, seemingly I'd best reply here. What's the alleged damage of not having this particular type? It's hardly as if it's "un-stub-taggable"; indeed, I recall vividly the several such articles had about three stub tags, as is going to be inevitable when historical events don't conform to the borders of modern states. I don't quite get the "out of question" remark, but the damage is clear. The article like Eternal Peace Treaty of 1686 and the article like Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine demand editors with very different sets of background and as such are better at different cats where repsective editors will look for them than lumped at generic ukr-stub. Here is the data we were looking for. It is referenced to official data (see "Таблицы подготовлены сотрудниками Международного института гуманитарно-политических исследований на основании данных статистических сборников и бюллетеней Министерства науки и образования Украины, 2001-2004 гг." at the bottom). Applying the same standards to all contributors of Wikipedia

Please explain your recent deletion of my link on the Lviv article while leaving there the link to the "Tourist Information and Travel Guide" which offiers an even wider spectrum of commercial services compared to my website link which you have persistently deleted.

I ask for consistency and applying the same standards to all the users, in line with the general concept of the Internet community.

Thousands of fair use images at your disposal

Look what I found Большая Советская Энциклопедия. Thousands of 1970s images from the 3rd edition that can be uploaded under fair use for anything. Also right now I have the original 1950s 2nd edition of the encyclopedia in 50+ hardbacks with excellent PD images in them. Any requests?

No prob, in the old one there are lots of images of sort of Stalinist buildings (which later Soviet press found distasteful) in every city, probably I counted at least 80 images of Stalin himself, including some on high quality colour inserts. Lots of maps, here is btw a pre-1945 map of Western Ukrainian Oblasts. [1] from this 1944 atlas [2]. Also lots of other stuff that I know of, including a 1939 atlas a 1940 atlas. Then I also have a home version of 1947 atlas and lots of other stuff. Also fell free to drop in on my Metro articles (I know you'll be intersted in Ukrainian ones) here User:Kuban kazak/Metro. Orange Revolution

I sourced the 1 mln est. a while ago to the USAID report (see further down in the article) when someone challenged it. Generally, the good style is to avoid refs within the lead. Ideally, the article is well referenced and lead summarizes the rest of the article and not the sources. Refs within the lead are usually a sign of an ongoinhg edit war when people add links to support their version. I still think we don't need the epithets. Election fraud is self-explanatory and factual. "Democratic" is your and mine opinion only. --Irpen 19:10, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying the 1mln comment. I don't think refs in the lead subtract from the value of the article, but it really is a non issue so long as the Supreme Court reference is in the main body.

Changing subjects, I want to travel to Ukraine in july, but the guy at embassy told me I need an invitation letter from an ukrainian citizen or travel agency. Actually, I am going to visit a friend who lives in Belgorod, Russia, near Kharkiv, and she says Ukraine is such a beautiful country and that I MUST spend some time there. Would you mind helping me with some information?

Saulo, to tell you the truth, I don't know much about this sort of stuff. I'm surprised that the invitation letter is still a requirement, which is unfortunate as it inhibits potential travelers like yourself. This invitation letter requirement is so so jurassic and communist!! I found a email of a hotel in Kharkiv, but the man in charge of replying messages don't want to help me. He told me he can send me only a reservation confirmation, but it is not sufficient to the guy at the embassy, because "Ukraine needs to know what you are going to do there". I asked the guy at the hotel if he knows a travel agency, but he didn't replied me anymore. At a local travel agency here in Brazil, I got the following answer: "U-WHAT?". Howdy, I believe we have already met in editing a few articles.

Actually I intentionally don't create an account as I don't have the time nor the inclination to get my self pulled into various political pissing contests provoked by a certain mafia of "editors" here whom I keep seeing pooping over all articles related to various countries which they believe to be their "canonical territory" and just sporadically contribute something to relatively low risk articles. Not a very noble stance I know, I should rather take a more active role and Eastern and Central European editors should together take wikipedia back from the trolls who pull wool over the eyes of western editors, but I simply don't have the necessary nerves to deal with that kind of people.

I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Duchnovich

Duchnovich never said that he was Ukrainian. He sayed he was Ruthenian/Rusyn (cf: "Ya rusyn Byw jesm i budu" I was, am and will be a Rusyn"). The fact that he didn't say that Rusyns were a separate nation is another problem. But saying that Dukhnovich is Ukrainian is an insult to the man that Rusyns believe to be their national hero.
