I backed out your edit adding an interpretation of Eratosthenes estimate. The interpretation that produces the close approximation to reality is a fringe interpretation, arrived at mostly by taking a vague quote and seeing if a way could be found to make it fit facts. It is unlikely that he produced a value with three decimals of precision and then phrased in that awkward way. The other interpretations are more in line with estimates in use at the time.
