Image copyright[edit]

Hi there! This isn't about obscure categories and wikilawyering, it's just a case of a photographer explicitly saying "please don't reuse this image outside of Liquipedia" (perhaps under Bain's personal instructions, if he's the kind of guy who wants to control the use of his image) and us respecting that by not reusing it. Posting this photo to a forum wouldn't be a big deal in the scheme of things, the internet is full of that, but by putting it up on Wikipedia marked "public domain" (which it isn't), we give what appears to be legal permission for anyone to reuse the photo on a gaming site or a book or a T-shirt or whatever, with no royalties or credit, directly against the wishes of the photographer and possibly Bain. Not cool. --McGeddon (talk) 12:56, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's how it works - Wikipedia only uses photos where the photographer has either said that it's public domain ("anyone can use this for anything") or creative commons attribution ("anyone can use this for anything, but you have to credit my name").
So we either have to find someone who's already taken a photo of Bain and uploaded it somewhere clearly saying that it's public domain or CC-Attribution licenced (Google Images Search Tools has a setting for "reuse with modification", but I tried it and it only turned up another dodgily attributed photo on Commons), take one ourselves, or (possibly the way to go here) find someone who's already taken a good photo of Bain and ask them to release it as public domain or CC-Attribution.
Might even be worth contacting Bain himself to ask if he has any press shots he'd be willing to release into the public domain. I agree it's not a great photo. --McGeddon (talk) 14:26, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
